Serenata de los Andes, the ensemble created and conducted by saxophonist, composer andmusical director, Jean Pierre Magnet, and produced by Parro Producciones, will performSerenata de los Andes: The Magic of Peru, on November 10th, 8 pm, at Frederick P. Rose Hall,Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center. For the first time, New Yorkers will have the opportunity to enjoythe versatility and beauty of Andean music. Magnet offers a repertoire of songs with his ownunique sound and a vibrant music execution, promising a sonic journey where the most beautifullandscapes of the Andes of Peru are shaped by the freshness and freedom of jazz improvisation.

Never before have 22 musicians united to present Andean music to New Yorkers, "Serenata delos Andes, the most transcendental project of my entire life, started in 2006 with the recording ofthe first studio CD and today, after 5 years of perfecting the show, it is ready to perform atLincoln Center. I feel privileged to have this opportunity in my career and of taking the sounds ofthe Andes of Peru to such an emblematic auditorium," said Jean Pierre Magnet. This ambitiousproject is supported by the best percussionist of Latin rhythms, Alex Acuña, recognized as "MostValuable Player" by the National Academy of Recordings Arts and Sciences (NARAS) andthree-time Grammy nominee, who joins with Magnet to show the world the richness of Andeanmusic, brought to the highest standard never seen before. Serenata de los Andes is a blend ofinstruments perfectly arranged in sections reuniting several regional music styles of thehighlands of Peru. Seven saxophones emulating the sounds of Mantaro Valley, five panpipesdialoguing with the wind of the highlands, six violins as a unique Andean symphony element, themelancholic Andean harp, the guitar and charango and the percussion, are the elements thatconfer each song's solidness and strength of the Peruvian Andes. Serenata de los Andes goesfurther beyond being a mere concert, aiming integration of ages, races, beliefs and traditionsthrough music and embracing diversity. Thus, we find violinists from the National Conservatory ofMusic playing together with Gilder Castro, renowned Andean violinist in the strings section.Luciano Quispe, virtuoso of the Andean harp and, for many the best harp instrumentalist of Peru,is in addition a composer of beautiful "huaynos". The saxophone section gathers together youngmusicians from different music trends, and on the guitar, Oscar Cavero, is a musician ofimpressive versatility who has accompanied the greatest Peruvian artists. This event is beingpresented by Absolutely Live Entertainment, the NYC-based music and event productioncompany owned by industry veteran Danny Melnick.

ALE has produced tours, festivals, concerts and special events worldwide since 2007. Upcomingevents include the Freihofer's Saratoga Jazz Festival, which will celebrate its 35th anniversaryon June 30 & July 1, 2012, the official "A Night in Treme" tour and, this fall, the reunion of PeeWee Ellis, Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker at Town Hall on Oct. 6, and theWainwright/McGarrigle Family Christmas Show, "A Not So Silent Night," at Town Hall onDec. 15.

The Cuatro is the national instrument of Puerto Rico. It belongs to the Lute family ofChordophones (or string instruments). However, very little is known about the exact origin of thePuerto Rican Cuatro. Most experts believe that the Cuatro has existed on the island in one formor another for about 400 years.

The Spanish instrument that is most closely related to is the Vihuela Poblana (also known as theMedieval/Renaissance guitar), which has 4 courses, 2 strings each for 8 strings in total as wellas the Spanish Medieval/Renaissance 4 course and the Spanish Laud, the last of which is stillfound in the Canary Islands.

The Puerto Rican Cuatro has ten strings in five courses, tuned in fourths from low to high with Ban E in octaves and A, D and G in unisons...

The Cuatro is the most familiar of the three stringed instruments that make up the Puerto Rican"orchesta jibara" (i.e., the Cuatro, the Tiple, and the Bordonua.

Come see Edwin Colon Zayas, Yezenia Cruz and the young virtuoso Carlos Gabriel perform thismagical musical genre we all know as "Musica Jibara". The cuatristas performing this year arenothing but the best. As we all know, Edwin Colon Zayas, one of Puerto Rico's nationaltreasures and #1 performer of the Puerto Rican Cuatro along with Carlos Gabriel will open upyour mind and take you to that little place we all call...Mi Patria...Mi Isla...Mi Puerto Rico!

Text and photo by Ismael "East" CarloMy reason for organizing the "LATIN JAZZ VIRTUOSOS'' series is that no one was listening…No one came to the rescue. All they heard was that Justin Bieber had complained why [he] hadnot won the Grammy.

This Latin jazz music that we have created is here to stay because the audience is an integralpart of this music, and demands that it stays as such; in the present…!

This series of the "Latin Jazz Virtuosos'" is an honor to present. Meeting with such accomplishedmusicians/artists who are dedicated to their craft rather than the almighty dollar is a refreshingexperience and I always go home with sensory overload.

These artists are filled with confidence, with sincere character and great conviction. This eventis not about making a buck; it's about dedication and the need to share the experience.

Most of these musicians study for years, and it's a lifetime of learning. They study and interpretwhat touches the pathos of the human soul and the audience is an integral part of the combo…These are remarkable individuals, with the courage of being...

ORQUESTA ARAGON RETURNS TO NEW YORK CITYText by Rob Bernberg/Photos by Allen SpatzOn October 11, New Yorkers were afforded the rare opportunity to see Cuba's legendaryOrquesta Aragon perform live and to dance to the music that first captured the world'simagination in the 1950s. Presented by Geno Chaviano (gencopresents.com) and ExecutiveProducer Alan Boss at New York's Metropolitan Pavilion, attendees were treated to a re-creationof Aragon's seminal inaugural concert presented in the United States. Those fortunate enough tobe on hand enjoyed both the experience of partaking in a unique historical event and the sheerjoy of dancing to timeless Cuban classics. Kudos to Geno Chaviano, Alan Boss and everyonethat had a hand in making this event possible.
