Carpenter or Carver Jesus caused quite a ruckus outside of church one day as He
overturned tables, drove out merchants with their wares, and said that He could raise up a temple in a mere three days. People had no idea that He meant the holy temple of His body (John 2).
In 1986, a fire at England’s Hampton Court Palace caused damage much harder to fix than overturned tables. Modern-day wood carvers faced the task of trying to restore centuries-old decorative carvings by the master craftsman and artist Grinling Gibbons. To repair what was damaged and reconstruct what was destroyed, what could they do except try to follow the master Gibbons’ example? It sounds a lot like the challenge faced by Jesus’ Apostles as they prepared to carry on His ministry.
Our Lord chiseled away at the lack of faith or, oftentimes, people putting too much faith in their own ambitions. Like a wood carver, Jesus came to make something new. Like our Lord, Gibbons had no desire to just scratch the surface. Instead, he could see the potential in a plank and, using every tool available to him, hew until the wood became a work of depth and exquisite beauty.
As we celebrate All Souls’ Day this month, we can take Jesus at His word that He will not reject anyone who comes to Him (John 6). Instead, He works with us and invites us to be part of His work. Your gift for the TV Mass will help chip away at the budget shortfall that Heart of the Nation has had since we began televising the Mass nationwide in 2011. We hope we don’t have to abandon the work so well begun.
A wood carver uses one hand for the power to push a chisel into the wood and the other hand to guide it. May you find strength to join in the Lord’s work with His love to guide you.

Taking Stock in Ways to DonateDo you have stocks or stock options, bonds, certificates of deposit, or other
securities? These can become attractive ways to donate to Heart of the Nation. Take two examples:
Donating stock, rather than cashing it in to make a gift to Heart of the Nation, can have tax advantages for you under the rules for capital gains. If you have paper certificates, you can simply endorse them on the back to Santa Fe Communications, Inc. (Heart of the Nation’s corporate name). You should sign your name in the presence of a bank officer or stock broker who can stamp it with a “medallion signature guarantee” that your signature is authentic.
You may also want to consider using securities to establish a charitable gift annuity to benefit Heart of the Nation. You can use a combination of assets to establish the annuity, including maturing certificates of deposit (CD’s). Unlike investment returns that depend on the financial market, a charitable gift annuity can be set up to provide lifetime fixed payments to you and help Heart of the Nation later.

A Different Kind of Thanksgiving One out of ten. Not one for the record books. After
curing ten lepers, I imagine that Jesus felt at least a tinge of disappointment when only one said thanks.
Of course, Jesus didn’t do good works for the gratification. He did want people to know that, with faith, healing goes more than skin deep.
That Gospel reading on Thanksgiving Day (Luke 17:11-19) puts a different slant on the holiday’s meaning than the tale of Niles Standish and the Pilgrims sitting down to a feast with the Wampanoag chief, Squanto, and other Native Americans.
We sometimes take God’s blessings for granted. We chalk them up to luck, the rewards of our own hard work, or even just probability (you
win some, you lose some). Holy Scripture and
the lives of saints can help us see things more readily in the context of our faith. Take Fr. Damien de Veuster and Mother Marianne Cope, both declared saints within the last few years.
They cared for lepers exiled to a peninsula on
the Hawaiian island of Molokai, tending to their spiritual, physical, and emotional well-being.
Thanks to medical advances, mandatory quarantine ended in 1969, but some residents chose to remain on the peninsula. It had become home—a place where they were accepted, looks, love, and all.
There’s no record of how many of the lepers thanked Fr. Damien and Mother Marianne. It’s not the thanks we get that count anyway, but the thanks we give.
Happy Thanksgiving!

With a Faithful HeartCelebrated in a 19th century seminary chapel, “My Sunday
Mass” brings the beauty and traditions of the Catholic faith as
close as your TV. We invite you to use your Prayer & Worship

Worship Guide offers pastoral reflections on the daily Scripture
readings for each week, a guide to the readings, and Catholic
prayers for the liturgical season. Your prayers and gifts for Heart of the Nation’s Catholic
ministry will help keep “My Sunday Mass” on TV and enable
us to continue providing free subscriptions to the Prayer &
Worship Guide. For TV Mass time and channel information nationwide,
