FROM ATYRAU TO MILAN

Between 3rd June and 4th July 2014, Skema LLP, Kazakhstan, sent two of its employees, Sharbanu Sul-tangaziyeva, Project Logistics Co-

ordinator, and Assyl Zhumyrgozhiyeva, Busi-ness Development Specialist, to Skema SPA headquarters in Italy. The purpose of this trip was the Training and Qualification Up-grading of the Quality and HSE systems for Skema LLP. This includes the general re-view of the quality system requirements, inspection activities and reports, non com-pliances, preventive and corrective actions, continuous improvement, indexes and pro-cess measure, and customer satisfaction.

“During the first week we were introduced to Ske-ma SPA staff and start-ed to learn and work with

Quality System under the supervision of the QHSE Manager, Emilia Pagani. We got fa-miliarized with the general work system, safety procedures and company policies, got to know how to handle quality docu-mentations: modifying, numbering/iden-tifying, filing, presenting and archiving. Our daily duties also involved learning In-ternational Standard and all Company Manuals and Procedures in order to bet-ter understand the basis of Quality System, preparing planning process, company pol-icies, objectives, provision of internal au-dits and inspections and certification issues. We also learned how to work with clients and suppliers and got a lot of information on how to improve the customers’ satis-faction. After training sessions, and with

instructions from the QHSE manager, we modified and updated Quality and HSE doc-uments. During the training essential focus was given to HSE procedures as well. After detailed illustrations of safety rules in the office, we participated in Emergency and Fire Test Training. We also observed what should be followed during emergency situ-ations, and the behavior of responsible in-dividuals in the office.

By visiting the production site, we consolidated the knowledge we received as we saw with our own eyes how technical documents are

run and kept at the production site, how equipment and tools are labeled and iden-tified, and how their maintenance and cali-bration are documented. For us, one of the most memorable moments during the train-ing was an official lunch with the President of Skema, Mario Cerveglieri, and hearing a lot about Skema’s experience in other coun-tries. This strengthened our beliefs in the company’s international culture, and we were proud that we were part of Skema.”

HAPPY 40TH BIRTHDAY, SKEMA!“W

hat an exciting event we are celebrating this year: Skema’s 40th anniversary. A lot has happened since our inception in March 1974: we developed new tech-nology, trained new people, and have adapted our business model to differen-tiate ourselves in the market several times. While we started as a switchgear

company, we have evolved to also offer packaged solutions, becoming a global leader in modular substations, and a one-stop-shop for turnkey, switchgear-related projects. From simple product packages to complex EPC contracts, all our solutions today are more customer and project driven, than product driven.

Being in business for forty years also means having a lot of responsibilities, not only to-wards our employees, but also towards our clients and our community of people that help us every day to be successful. We, at Skema, believe that to be successful we need a lot of passion, and people obsessed by quality, doing things right, and loving the job they

do. We share our passion with the people that work with us, especially our customers. There is always a sense of speed, of passion in what we are doing, and a clear vision, knowing where we are going and how to get there.

If I had to chose a theme that has been a constant in Skema’s company culture throughout these forty years in business, it is that customers are at the heart of what we are doing. Our secret has been to be clear and consistent with them, to have a solid understanding of their needs, and to keep listening. If you walk in our offices, see our literature, or read a sim-

ple letter, you will not miss a sticker: Customer is King. For all of us working at Skema, this mainly means worldwide and first class service. We are very proud to celebrate this special occasion, and we thank our clients, employees and suppliers for their invaluable contribution to our suc-cess. We look forward to our future challenges together!”

“Mozambique: this immense veranda on the Indian Ocean …”

Eduardo Lourenço, leaving Maputo in 1995

Mozambique

SKEMA SQ MOZAMBIQUE

“Early in 2013 Skema founded a local compa-ny in Maputo, Skema SQ LDA. The prima-ry objective of our new company has been to follow our clients in the Oil & Gas Industry,

and to support them in the development of the important gas fields discovered in the north of the Country, near Cabo Del-gado. Skema’s local facilities in Maputo currently include an

office, a showroom and a training center for local personnel. After founding Skema SQ, we invested in training our local team, and hosted the local administration staff for a month in Italy. Our objective was to familiarize our team with the company’s pro-cedures (administration, quality, documentation, and commer-cial), and to strictly extend Skema’s operational methods to our operations in Maputo.

Regarding the technical aspects of our activity, for near-ly nine months we selected and hosted electrical en-gineers in Italy, who completed the first and second training modules, and were working in our manufac-

turing unit, to practice what they learnt in class: assembly, test-ing and operating on Skema’s switchgear.

Presently in Mozambique we are working to establish a training center dedicated to the education of young Mozambican engineers, who are willing to learn the electrical and mechanical engineering disciplines.

One of Skema’s corporate values is to leave a legacy (local technical and manufacturing skills) in the coun-tries where we operate. We, at Skema, firmly believe in contributing to the development, growth and wealth

of the local communities involved. This is done through a very precise international strategy comprised of multiple steps: set up a local company; train local engineers, managers and supervi-sors in Italy; set up local assembly facilities and warehouse; and set up training programs on site for local engineers and clients.

Last but not least, Mozambique has become for sure my favorite destination on my business travel, both for its natural beauty and the nice and warm people. I enjoy Ma-puto’s local markets with the wonderful artistic master-

pieces, the colorful roads of Maputo, the delicious king prawns, and the kindness of the people.”

NORTH SEA

JASMINE DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

SKEMA WON AND COMPLETED AN IMPORTANT PROJECT TO DESIGN AND PROVIDE INTELLIGENT POWER MOTOR CON-TROL CENTERS SWITCHGEAR FOR THE JASMINE DEVELOP-MENT PROJECT. JASMINE IS A RESERVE OF HIGH PRESSURE,

HIGH TEMPERATURE, NATURAL GAS LYING AT A DEPTH OF MORE THAN 4,000 METERS UNDER THE NORTH SEA. SKEMA’S SWITCH-GEAR WAS, THEREFORE, INTENDED FOR USE ON AN OFFSHORE PLAT-FORM LOCATED IN AN EXTREMELY HARSH PLACE THAT PUTS THE WORKFORCE AND THE INFRASTRUCTURE TO THE TEST.

Jasmine was destined to occupy a special place in the heart of Skema. The reason is simple: Jasmine repre-sents one of the best examples of the company’s ca-pacity to design and deliver solutions that can be adapt-

ed to the timescales and customization requests of the client. The project was commissioned by oil industry giant ConocoPhillips, with engineering by WorleyParsons, and was composed of seven switchboards (100 columns), and 3 intelligent RTUs. It required com-pliance with exceptionally strict quality standards, and the production of particularly complex documentation.

As Luigi, the Skema Project Manager for Jasmine confirms: “The project was implemented in line with non standard technical specifications, tailor-made to meet the client’s needs through a design process that involved monthly meetings between the

client’s representatives, and Skema’s engineering and production man-agers. This multinational team was composed of specialists from a plethora of different countries and cultures, united by the common ob-jective of delivering the project on time, and to the necessary standard”.

Based on these specific requirements, Skema designed and built at its Milan facility a pilot board that, following approval by the client, was used as a model for the project. But the real criti-cal factor for Jasmine was time: delivering the product with-

in a tight timeframe was a challenge to which Skema rose brilliantly.

As always, the most gratifying comments came from the cli-ent. Those who worked on the project spoke of their satis-faction with a method that combined speed and precision with attention to detail, without losing sight of the bigger pic-

ture, and making the most of the contribution of each team member. Upon completion of the project, Skema was nominated and commend-ed in the “Planning and Delivery” category of the Jasmine Supplier Awards for Excellence, amongst the over 160 suppliers of the project:

“Skema was a bright star in Jasmine’s electrical suc-cess. Their embrace of SAP’s ERP prior to Jasmine was evident in their planning, scheduling, detailed design, material availability, along with the low volt-

age switchgear and MCC’s fabrication”, Project Manager, Jasmine Development Project.

NORTH SEA

GOLDEN EAGLEPROJECT

SKEMA WAS AWARDED A CONTRACT FOR THE DESIGN, EN-GINEERING AND MANUFACTURING OF INTELLIGENT LOW VOLTAGE SWITCHGEAR, AND THE MOTOR CONTROL AND MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (MCMS) BY CB&I FOR NEXEN PE-

TROLEUM. MORE SPECIFICALLY, THE SUPPLY INCLUDED INTELLIGENT MOTOR CONTROL CENTERS (72 COLUMNS, 341 DRAWERS), POW-ER CENTERS (14 COLUMNS), DUAL REDUNDANT DATA CONCENTRA-TOR UNITS, DISTRIBUTION BOARDS AND THE MOTOR CONTROL AND MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (MCMS).

Skema’s MCMS is geared towards delivering simplicity in com-missioning and maintenance, while ensuring unrivalled per-formance in terms of system availability and communication speeds. The MCMS not only helps the operator to control the

users, but is of great significance to the electrical engineer in verify-ing the performances of the electrical networks by means of contin-uous monitoring of the parameters set in the IEDs with special atten-tion to those which influence the reliability/maintenance of the plant.

The MCMS records the running hours, the number of operations of each feeder circuit and analyzes the most frequent causes of tripping/alarms. This allows the engineer to plan proactive counter measures to avoid future plant problems that may

cause economic losses and, in the worst cases, safety risks to the plant/personnel. This type of intelligent reporting is pivotal in ensur-ing a proactive and cost effective maintenance regime of the plant.

Marco, Skema’s Production Manager, states, “The spe-cial features of Skema intelligent MCC production cycle are the focus on the client’s requirement during the sys-tem design phase, the integrated supply chain for switch-

board and control system, the painstaking attention to details during the testing phase (conducted entirely in house), which sees all of the system functions being checked meticulously, and the FAT procedure that is carried out in partnership with the client in a fully integrated environment. All of this helps to guarantee that the system performs to a very high standard, and that it will require very little (if any) on-site work in order to commission the full system”.

The Golden Eagle is another special project to Skema, for sev-eral reasons: the challenging weather conditions, the strin-gent project requirements, and, last but not least, the positive relationship with the client.

“The most important aspect is ensuring that the clients appreciate the quality of our service, since the quality of our products is assured. The client must be confi-dent that Skema has what it takes to resolve any is-

sues that may arise at the project definition stage, and once the pro-ject is up and running. We were delighted by the positive feedback received by the client upon completion of the Golden Eagle project, who recognized in particular Skema’s performance in project man-agement, planning and delivery, competence and training, commer-cial management and customer interface”, states Elisabetta Cerveg-lieri, V.P. of Business Development.

DISCOVERED IN 2007, THE GOLDEN EAGLE AREA (WHICH IS MADE UP OF THE RESERVOIRS GOLDEN EAGLE, HOBBY AND PEREGRINE), IS LOCATED AT A DEPTH OF APPROXIMATELY 113 M OF WATER UNDER THE UK SECTOR OF THE NORTH SEA, 70 KM OFFSHORE. THE FIELD IS DEVELOPED USING TWO PLATFORMS - A WELLHEAD PLATFORM AND A PRODUCTION, UTILITY AND QUARTERS (PUQ) PLATFORM. THE TWO PLATFORMS ARE CONNECTED BY A 70 M BRIDGE. THE FACILITIES BEING BUILT AT GOLDEN EAGLE CAN ACT AS A FUTURE HUB FOR TIEBACKS. NEXEN HAS ESTIMATED THAT THE GOLDEN EAGLE AREA IS ONE OF THE LARGEST OIL DISCOVERIES IN THE UK NORTH SEA IN RECENT YEARS.

JASMINE IS A GAS CONDENSATE RESERVOIR THAT LIES IN SOME 80 M OF WATER AT A DEPTH OF 4,115 M BELOW THE SEABED, AND IS LOCATED 240 KM SOUTH EAST OF ABERDEEN. THE JASMINE DEVELOPMENT COMPRISED A WELLHEAD PLATFORM TIED BACK TO THE CONOCOPHILLIPS OPERATED JUDY PLATFORM, WHICH IS APPROXIMATELY 9 KM WEST OF THE JASMINE FIELD, VIA A MULTIPHASE PIPELINE AND RISER PLATFORM CONNECTED TO THE EXISTING JUDY PLATFORM VIA A LINKING BRIDGE.

#GOLDENEAGLE

#JASMINE

The FAT was again a suc-cess with everyone from both WorleyParsons and

ConocoPhillips leaving with nothing but praise for Skema.

Lead Electrical Engineer

Jasmine Development, North Sea, UK

The special features of Ske-ma’s production cycle are

the focus on the client’s re-quirements, and the pains-taking attention to details.
