When November rolls around, our minds simultane-
ously focus on the meaning of thanks. For starters, No-
vember 27th is our Thanksgiving holiday. A quick trip to
the History Channel’s website pulls up some interesting
facts and figures. Thanksgiving is held in commemora-
tion of the settlers of the Plymouth colony in
Massachusetts. The colonists had a three-day feast with
the Wampanoag tribe. We continue this tradition, where
over 88% of Americans eat turkey on Thanksgiving. This
means approximately 46 million turkeys find themselves
in someone’s oven. A time honored tradition of Thanksgiving is watching the
Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, where some 3.5 million people enjoy the
parade. Over 50 million people view the parade on their t-v screens. Of course, other
pastimes with family include watching football games, going shopping on Black
Friday, and enjoying a restful time together after
eating a big meal.
We get together not only to remember some of the first settlers coming to North
America, but because we have much to be thankful for. We need to be thankful for
the bountiful food available to us as Americans. We just took up our offering for World
Hunger, realizing many people around the world do not have half of what our
Thanksgiving meals would be. We need to be thankful for our families. We are
collecting a special offering for the Baptist Children’s Homes in NC to provide funds for
children in need. Most importantly, we need to give thanks to God. God blesses us in
ways we do not even acknowledge. Just the simple fact of inhaling oxygen and ex-
haling carbon dioxide is a miracle in itself. One day, we will get to give thanks to God
forever in eternity all because of what Jesus Christ did for our salvation. Let’s give
thanks the best we can during our time here on earth.
Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving,
Kevin
