Smith, Esq., Steptoe & Johnson PLLC Does unionization and Northwestern University football players ring a bell to you? It more than likely does, as in August 2015, the decision was made by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to decline to consider the petition filed by the football players to form a union. However, this decision was strictly limited to the grant-in-aid scholarship football players covered under the petition. But, prior to and since Northwestern University football, there have been other increased union activities at universities; those activities are limited to graduate assistants, teaching assistants, etc. Most universities that have a Masters program or Ph.D. program utilize some type of graduate assistants, teaching assistants, or research assistants in those programs to assist professors with their teaching and/or research. The following developments are applicable and important to private universities with those programs. Subscribe Share Past Issues Translate
