Dear Crane families, “The mind is not a vessel to be filled but a fire to be kindled.” (Plutarch) Happy November! Although there is not yet snow on the ground, Mother Nature is letting us know that it will soon arrive. We already have a small collection of toques and mittens, among other items, in our Lost and Found, so please re-mind your child to have a look in the bin if they are missing items. Although the days are getting shorter and cooler, we encourage you to continue to spend time outdoors with your child. October was a busy month for staff and students. Many thanks to parents and students that were able to attend tri-conferences. If you were unable to attend, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher(s) to book an appointment to come in to discuss your child’s progress. First term report cards are scheduled to be available for viewing on-line after the winter break but it is our hope to have them available to you just before the break. Looking at our November events, we would like to invite you to attend our Remembrance Day Assembly that will be held at 9:40 a.m. on No-vember 10th in the gym. There will not be classes on the 11th due to Remembrance Day, or on the 14th due to a divisional professional development day. Photo retakes will be the morning of the 18th. Our Winter Concert will be on December 1st this year, so please save the date! Please note, throughout the school year, we will be conducting ten Fire Drills, two Lockdown Drills, and two Tornado Drills. Teachers discuss the rationale and procedures with students prior to the drill, to ensure that our school community is prepared in the event of an emergency. There are some new practices and procedures that are being implemented in schools across the country to help us be better prepared in the case of a po-tential threat in the building. In the coming weeks, we will be sending home a letter from the school division that will highlight some of these practices.
As always, please feel free to contact me if you
have any questions or concerns. I look forward
to continuing to work with you and your child
this year.

Allergy Alert
For safety and health reasons we respectfully request that parents refrain from sending food items as birthday or holiday treats to school.
This is a reminder that É cole Crane has a well-developed plan around allergies. We have many children with se-vere food allergies, thus our school is declared ‘Allergy Aware’. Students and staff are asked not to bring peanut or nut products into the school. If there are additional allergies in your child’s classroom, your teacher will have provided you with all the necessary details.
Tornado/Lockdown Drills Nutritional Guidelines
Éach year, Manitoba schools are required to conduct fire, lock-down and tornado drills. The Pembina Trails School Division has established guidelines for schools to follow in this respect. In addi-tion to our regular fire drills, we are planning to conduct lockdown and tornado drills at Crane in the next months. A school lockdown would occur in the case of an outside environ-mental emergency, an unsafe individual or intruder entering the school building, and/or a directive from an outside source, such as the Winnipeg Police Service. At É cole Crane, the lockdown proce-dure involves an intercom announcement stating that a lockdown is in progress. At this announcement, all students remain in their classrooms. Teachers invite any students who may be in the hall-ways to enter their classrooms and lock their classroom doors. Students and teachers move to a safe and secure position in the room (away from the door and windows). Individuals in other areas of the school (i.e. bathrooms), enter the closest locka-ble room. Éveryone remains in their safe location until an ‘all clear’ directive is announced. The all clear signal is followed by a brief announcement assuring our safety and explaining that the proce-dure is over. For tornado drills, students will assemble in their designated area (usually the hallway adjacent to their classroom). Students will be instructed to get on their knees in the prone position, making sure their heads face the interior walls, while placing their hands above their heads. It is our in-tent to teach and practice these protocols in a proactive, calm and reassuring manner. The drills will be practiced on a class basis and then conducted as a whole school. Please call the school at 204-453-0539 if you have any questions regard-ing this drill.
All students at É cole Crane are expected to spend recess peri-ods outside. Please send children well dressed for the elements. On light rain days, we send students out for recess. Throughout the winter months, outdoor recess is cancelled if temperatures descend to –27 degrees Celsius or lower (with wind-chill factor) according to our school weather station. PLEASE NOTE that our Kindergarten stu-dents do not experience recess periods out-doors until the Spring term (April - June).
Inclement Weather
In October, we marked School Library Month by taking up the Manitoba School Library Association’s challenge to ‘dive into a book’ by holding a school-wide 15 minute silent read-ing period on October 24th (while snuggling our ted-dies!). We, in Pembina Trails, realize how fortunate we are to have fully staffed and fully stocked libraries to support and enhance our students’ education. A big thank you must go to Mme Sala, our library tech-nician for all of her hard work in preparing and run-ning our Scholastic Book Fair and doing all the tally-ing afterwards. We pro-moted a love of books and reading amongst our stu-
dents and parents and raised over $800 worth of books and profit to supple-ment our library budget. Thanks also to our team of parent volunteers who helped with set up and with running the fair: Rachelle P.-L., Stephanie M., Lisa B., Barb L. and Allan K. We were pleased to see so many of our students and parents in the library to visit the book fair. Congratulations to Abby F. who won the book fair draw. Abby got to select $25 worth of books for herself as well as $25 worth of books for Mme Michelle to include in her classroom library. As this article goes to press, we are preparing for our 2nd ‘library reward recess’. All
students in Grade Four who return all of their library books on time are invited to attend a special bonus li-brary period during the noon recess on one of the predetermined dates. Stu-dents may explore the won-derful resources in our li-brary, delve into some of our Makerspace materials or enjoy the computer lab. It’s fun ‘free-time’ to recog-nize our students’ respect for the library and their classmates by returning their books on time. Mme Trish Steadman Teacher Librarian

our goals in this area, is to
prepare ourselves to teach
grade-level appropriate les-

the possibilities this goal
presents to us as educators
and also to our young learn-
ers. As we delve further
into our exploration of the
Seven Sacred Teachings this
year, we will share our plans
and progress with you!
This year, one of our school plan goals is centered around the First Nations’ Seven Sacred Teachings of wisdom, love, courage, truth, humility, respect and honesty. We, as a staff, rec-ognize that in order to share these messages with our students, we must commit ourselves to a deeper under-standing of First Nations’ history and culture. Build-ing upon The Blanket Éxer-cise which our staff experi-enced last year, we chose to follow the lead of The Mani-toba Teachers’ Society in marking Orange Shirt Day, to honour survivors of resi-dential schools.

We returned all of our library books.
We are already busy prepar-ing for the Winter concert that will be held on Thurs-day, December 1st. Mark your calendars for the per-formances. Concert A - Mme Michelle Monin-He bert’s, Mme Gibson and Mme Suth-erland-Brown’s classes will perform at 6:30 p.m. Éach student will be able to invite four guests to the evening performance. We will have a matine e at 9:30-10:00 also on December 1st for grand-parents and other family and friends who can’t come to the evening performance.
Concert B - Mme Tonia Briscese and Mme Lavoie’s classes will perform at 7:15 and their matine e will be from 10:45-11:15. We have 80 students singing in three choirs meeting dur-ing the noon hour this fall. In November the volunteer stu-dents from Mme Michelle Monin-He bert’s, Mme Gibson and Mme Sutherland-Brown’s classes (Chorale A) will be practicing on Day 1 at 11:55. (Please note this is a change for the Gr. 1/2 stu-
dents who came on Day 3 in October.) Singers from Mme Tonia Briscese and Mme La-voie’s classes (Chorale B) will practice on Day 3 (this is a change for the Gr. 1 students who used to come on Day 1). The Gr. 2 students from Mme Van Kat’s Gr. 2/3 class will NOT be performing at the December concert – they are welcome to sing in the CHO-RALÉ DÉ MIDI (Day 5) which will perform songs of the season (religious, cultural and multi-ethnic) at a venue to be determined. They will also perform with the Gr. 3 and Gr. 4 students during the Spring Concert in April.
If you would like your child to be involved with any of these volunteer noon hour choirs, please email me ([email protected]) as we are already half way through our 7 week practice season. Students who have come regularly will be able to participate in the popcorn party at the end of the 7 weeks of practice.
If your child has been taking private music lessons and would like to perform for their class, please email me to arrange a time to share their talents.
The Gr. 3 students (and the Gr. 2 students from Mme Van Kat’s class) will be beginning their recorder unit in Janu-ary. Order forms for the $8 recorders will be going home in November. Please DO NOT purchase your own recorder without checking with Mme Davey first to make sure you have the same kind of re-corder that will be used by the rest of the class.
The Gr 2/3, 3 and 4 choirs will be performing at our Remembrance Day Ceremo-ny on November 10th at 9:40
a.m. Éveryone is welcome to attend.

Physical Activity
Facts for Parents Start Young – Incorpo-rating physical activity into a child’s everyday life at an early age sets the foundation for good hab-its for years to come.
Our fundraising activities have helped raise over $14,000! And our grant applications have raised $26,000! These funds will go towards the next phase of our ‘Naturally Crane’ project. We expect to have a project start date in May/June.
Thank you to all the É cole Crane families and staff for your support, we couldn’t do it without you!!
We are looking for one volunteer to coordinate and host the SGTC spring and fall school

would not need to attend our monthly meetings.
We are looking for new members. Are you are interested in improving the school grounds?
Time available in any capacity is welcome. Various jobs are available.
