It is our responsibility as the adult members of this vibrant community to ensure that we are helping them to go beyond mediocrity. Let’s continue to be positive role models for our youth. Thank you to those parents who volunteer in and around the school. We are very grateful for the contributions our parent volunteers play in helping us to address and achieve student achievement. You certainly are making St.Cecilia a much safer, healthier, learning focused school. This commitment solidifies the home and school bond that continues to thrive in our community. This year’s pastoral focus is on our school relationship with our Parish. Thankfully at St.Cecilia this is but a mere continuation of the strong bond that remains evident between the school, our Church and our wonderful families. This year we will once again be using the new Growing Success Report and this will give parents an early opportunity to review the progress level of your child. This first report will be a checklist and the Parent Conferences will be held on Thursday, November 17, from 5pm to 8:30pm and on Friday, November 18 from 8:30am to 11:15pm. This will be a great opportunity to partner with your child’s teacher in determining ‘Next Steps”. Much gratitude to the parents and teachers who assist with our extra-curricular programs. Because of your efforts, we are able to keep our students healthy and active as well as more creatively challenged. We also are very fortunate at St.Cecilia to have a very active CSPC who is involved at the school level in such a positive way that our staff and students reap the benefits of all of your efforts. Finally this month we celebrate the Virtue of Peace. We recall all those men and women who served us at the cost of pain, and death. Many we knew, many remain known only to you. Help us to be worthy of their sacrifice and of their example of courage, loyalty, steadfastness, and perseverance. Let us continue to teach our students, your children, to never forget those who have gone before, whose names are etched on our cenotaphs across Canada. It is through this Remembrance that we may foster a school community that focuses on respect for one another which is the foundation of a truly peaceful school community. ncipal

As we reach mid-term, our students need to be asking themselves if they have been striving for excellence in their daily lives.

Planning for Your Future

During the month of October, students in several intermediate classes began to develop their Individual

Pathways Plan (IPP), as they prepare to enter high school and think about what they would like to do

beyond secondary school. Students logged into their myBlueprint and began to set goals for themselves,

with a focus on learning skills; thought about the courses that they will be taking in high school; started

to develop a resume; and explored various occupations and post-secondary pathways across Canada.

Parents are encouraged to ask their intermediate child(ren) to show them the work that they may have

done on myBlueprint and encourage them to continue to develop their plan for the future. Follow these easy

steps.

1. Please go to www.myblueprint.ca/tcdsb. 2. Click on “Login with school account.”

3. Ask your child to use their TCDSB username and password to log in.

High School Applications Parents of grade 8 students are reminded to be sure to

get those high school applications back to the school and accurately completed so that the school can submit

them to the Board by November 14th. Your child’s application form is due back at the school before the

14th, so ask him or her when the due date is.

You may have also already received the After 8 Student and Parent Transition Guides. In them, you will find

detailed information about the TCDSB Secondary School Application process. Ask your child about it if you do not see one by early November. They are also

available online in English and several other Languages at this address:

Healthy Habits for Happiness Happiness is definitely in the eye of the “beholder”. For some of us small things can make us immensely happy. For others, we can at times, avert look the

small triumphs of happiness and focus on the negative. If we think about people we know, we can often categorize them into a “glass half full or glass

half empty” dichotomy.

There is much exciting evidence to suggest that happiness contributes to physical health. According

to an article in the Proceeding of the National Academy of Science (2014) entitled “ The How of Happiness”, the happiest people had an average

heart rate of about 6 fewer beats per minute. In addition a 2010 student cited in the same article indicated that over a ten year period, persons who rated themselves as happier on a 5

point scale demonstrated a drop in coronary heart disease.

( The Science of Happiness , Time Magazine, 2016)

SLEEP MORE People who have better sleep have a better chance at achieving emotional well-being, according to a

2014 analysis. The happiest people get and average of 8 hours a night; 42% of adults in the US get less

than the recommended minimum of 7 hours

EXERCISE: Physical activity boosts the actions of endorphins, which may be natural mood enhancers.

GET OUTSIDE: Studies have found that sunshine

boosts the synthesis of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood and

may combat depression. EAT MORE FISH: In a review of studies that tracked the consumption of fish and emotions,

subject who ate more fish demonstrated a lower risk of depression.

SMILE: A 2012 student found that people who smiled enjoyed a lower heart rate during stress

CROSS COUNTRY

Our long cross country season has come to an end and we cannot be more proud of our Tigers. From the first practices in early September to the City Finals on October 25th, our runners gave it their all. With strength and determination they

pushed themselves through challenging practices lead by Mr Biagini. Under the direction of our

dedicated coaches, Ms Terplak, Ms Pamula, Ms Verelst, Ms Wilson, Mr La Gamba and Mr

Thirlwall our runners improved their strides and pushed themselves to their full potential. At the Divisional meet, their hard work was put on full display as race after race had our Green shirted

runners fill the top spots. We won the first place pennant at that event. At the South Regional meet our two buses of green shirted runners

continued to show off their greatness. Finally at the City event, with 28 runners, the team placed 4th out of over 100 schools. Another highlight

was the first place pennant earned by the grade 8 boys team. We thank all the runners, their

families who encouraged and supported them and their coaches who helped them succeed and

love running. Go Tigers!

recovery scenarios and a smaller drop in positive emotions during stressful tasks.

ULTIMATE FRISBEE

Congratulations to our grades 7 & 8 students who participated in an Ultimate Frisbee Tournament at the end of October. Our grade 8 team won the tournament and the grade 7 team made it to the semis. Thanks to our coaches and all the parents who came out to cheer on the teams - Go Tigers!

Monthly Update from the Board November 2016

The Year of the Parish: The Celebration Continues We look forward to continuing the celebration of the Year of the Parish throughout the school year. It is a wonderful opportunity for our schools and parishes to connect, or re-connect, and plan activities and ongoing initiatives together that will support the important partnership between Family, Church and School. Parents, school administrators, parents, teachers, pastors and parish representatives were invited to sit down for some preliminary discussions earlier this year. To see the many ideas that came forward from those Year of the Parish Conversations, visit our website https://www.tcdsb.org/Board/NurturingOurCatholicCommunity/YearoftheParish/Pages/Ideas-Conversation-Starters.aspx More information about our pastoral plan here: https://www.tcdsb.org/Board/NurturingOurCatholicCommunity/YearoftheParish/Pages/default.aspx More information about our pastoral plan here: https://www.tcdsb.org/Board/NurturingOurCatholicCommunity/YearoftheParish/Pages/default.aspx
