And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good
deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing,
but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day
approaching. (Hebrews 10:24-25)
I have been thinking a lot about family lately. Just in our family, Jeanne and I
have experienced a lot of changes. Katie has moved onto her career in the Air
Force, our sons and their wives have had children and that of course means
Jeanne and I have totally changed into grandparents. These changes are
amazing to go through, and we have grown closer through them. Through the
rejoicing, trials and prayers, our family has grown closer.
As we approach the holiday season thoughts of family only increase. Some of
us will be remembering people we have lost, or thinking about family members
that are a long distance away. Even though this is supposed to be a time of
thanksgiving and rejoicing, this season can be difficult for many of us.
The wonderful thing about being a part of the family of God, is family is always
available. That is the way our Father in heaven designed the church, and sent
His Son Jesus to make sure we can be adopted into this big and amazing family.
As with any family, it is easy to get busy and not visit, or spend any time with
those family members God has given you here at Appleton Christian. That is a
problem. For as the scripture above states, we really do need to come together.
If anyone reading this doesn’t think that “the Day” isn’t approaching, then give
me a call and we can talk about it. But the writer of Hebrews says that because
of the times, it is even more important for our family to be together.
I have had people tell me that to grow in their walk, they don’t need to go to
church, or even need a church, but that idea isn’t Biblical. God designed the
Church to be a body, not a bunch of individual parts separated.
I fully agree (through experience) what Robert Mulholland wrote in his book*
on spiritual growth about this issue. Mulholland wrote, “There is no way that an
individual can be formed in the image of Christ for others without the nurture of
the body of Christ, and there is no way that the community of faith can be the
body of Christ if it does not nurture the individual members toward wholeness in
Christ.” (Mulholland 2016, 91) Our Lord is calling us to grow and build His
kingdom.
If you haven’t been around lately, come home and enjoy your family here at
Appleton. To be all that God has called us to be, both individually and as a
church, we need to be together.
I love you all,
Pastor Dan

Six Reasons Why You Should Serve In Children’s
Ministry
I truly believe that if more people understood the spiritual blessings
that come from serving God’s kids, then we would have people on a
waiting list to serve in the Children’s Ministry. However, right now,
that is not the case. It is understandable too, some of us get so busy
we can’t find the time to serve. Others feel unqualified. We think we
are too old, we are afraid of children, we are afraid of diapers, we just
are afraid. There are many reasons why we don’t serve in the
Children’s Ministry and some of them are absolutely valid. However,
Children’s Ministry is one of the most important things we will ever
do as a church. So today, I wanted to share with you a view reasons
why I believe people should minister to the children in the church.
Please read them and then consider if this is the ministry for you.
Why You Should Serve In Children’s Ministry
1. Children are important to God. I don’t know about you, but I want to serve in ways that matter most
to God. There is no question about God’s attitude toward children.
The Bible tells us that kids are a blessing from God. While Jesus was
on earth, he made a point to welcome children and to affirm their
value. He even talked about punishment for anyone who would abuse
a child. Make no mistake, kids matter to God.
2. Serving in Children’s Ministry multiplies your efforts long-
term. There are few ministry opportunities that allow you to impact the
future is such a direct way. When you love and teach kids this
Sunday, you are also influencing generations to come. These children
will one day become parents and church leaders themselves. If you
want to change the world long-term, then you should serve in
Children’s Ministry.
3. Reaching children should be a top priority for the church. It’s been proven that most people who will come to Christ do so when
they are young. The childhood years are the years of greatest
opportunity for the Gospel. Unfortunately, many churches don’t make
the most of what God has given them. If you want to see people come
to Christ, then you should serve in Children’s Ministry.
4. Serving children will build humility into your character. Too often, those who work hard in the church nursery or Sunday
school are not given credit for their service. “Out of sight out of
mind,” is the way most churches operate. While this can be
discouraging, I think it’s a blessing in disguise. Like so many other
acts of service done quietly, the rewards come in heaven. But in the
here-and-now, I am glad for a humble place to serve.
5. Serving kids will make you a more patient person.
Children’s Ministry is unpredictable and even the best plans can be
torpedoed by a disruptive child. This is another blessing in disguise,
working with kids will teach you patience. Where else can you gain
this excellent fruit of the Spirit in as little as one hour each week?
6. The #1 qualification is love. As a young Christian, I discovered that many avenues of church
service were beyond my abilities. You may never sing a solo or
preach a sermon in church, but God wants you to find a place of
ministry. Serving in the Children’s Ministry is open to almost all
Christians. If you love God and his children, then there are many
different ways for you to help.
These are just six of the many reasons why you should consider
serving in the Children’s Ministry. Right now, we have openings for
teachers and for teaching helpers in our preschool and elementary
Sunday schools. It is a total blast to serve in these areas, and I know
that you will be blessed. If you want more information, or would like
to volunteer, please contact Pastor Alan after service on Sunday, or by
phone or email to get started.
God bless and I can’t wait to see how God uses YOU to impact the
kids of Appleton Christian Church.

An Encouraging Word from Scott Thompson The other day I read a devotional about three scriptures found in 1 Thess. 5:16-18. They are “Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” Too many times we get caught up in “what is God’s will for my life?” The scriptures tell us several things that are God’s will for our lives, but these three, if taken together as a message, speak volumes to each of us about how we should go about our daily lives. What happens when we have NO JOY? Nehemiah 8:10 in part says, “the joy of the LORD is our strength”. When we lose our joy we become powerless, without strength. Jesus, in John 15:10-11 says, “When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes your joy will overflow.” There are a couple of things to take away from this scripture. First, we have to remain in Christ’s commandments and in his love. That means when someone cuts you off in traffic or takes your spot in the check-out line...if you remain in Christ’s love…HE will fill you with his joy. We could put on a façade that would appear to be full of joy and happy, but anything we muster up won’t last, it needs to be what Jesus fills us with…his joy. The next one of the scriptures is “never stop praying”. Unless we communicate with God our lives as followers of Christ will become dry and powerless… because the joy will never come! We might think in our own heart that we are obeying Jesus' commandments, but unless we communicate with him, the voice of our conviction soon becomes so faint we fail to hear it. The last part of the scripture “be thankful in all circumstances,” is the tough one. When you get on the scale in the morning and get a bad result, or your child gets into trouble at school, or your identity gets stolen, it is hard sometimes to be thankful in those circumstances. Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” So we need to have faith that God has our best in his heart in all of these circumstances and be thankful…even if you can’t yet see the good in your situation. I encourage you to pray and see the connection between obedience, Christ’s joy, thanksgiving, and a healthy prayer life. God really does want you to be full of joy and thankful it’s his will for your life…never stop praying!

Ministry: HOPE of the Grand Valley's mission is to provide
support and a hand up to hard-working parents and their
children who work and are not receiving welfare, or housing
assistance.
This is a group that tends to fall through the cracks. These are
people trying to break the cycle of poverty and doing their best
to get ahead.
It's a situation that creates an uncertain future for both parents
and their children. HOPE of the Grand Valley aims to help
these families create a more predictable and stable environment
for their children.
A hand up, not a hand out.

HOGV is funded solely by donations. We have developed a
way to really stretch a dollar! We do not have any paid staff
and are run by our dedicated volunteers. All of our funds go
back to our programs. We believe this is the best use of the
funds rather than using the donations to rent office space, etc.
Prayer Requests: Our prayer is that our community realizes
the value in what we do by financially supporting us so we will
be able to purchase a home for HOPE and expand our services.
I also pray every day that God will send the right families to us
who we will be able to help get out of the situation they are in;
that they will become independent and successful.
Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.
