New Language Resource
Recently, the South Dakota State Library
introduced a new language eresource
available to library patrons: Pronunciator. Pronunciator provides over 80
different language courses. There are also 50 English as a Second Language
(ESL) courses. Instructional methods include oral phrases, flash cards, and learning guides. It also has ProLive, live online conversation classes led by teachers, with 250+ half-hour sessions per week in over 20 languages. Another
feature of Pronunciator is the Course Designer module, which allows for the creation of private multimedia language courses in Dakota, Lakota, and over
700 other Native American languages, and for the tracking of student progress within those custom courses. This resource takes the place of the
previously available Mango Languages. Additionally, this program provides access to the additional resource
ProCitizen, which is an interactive course to help prepare you for the civics,
reading and writing parts of the USCIS Naturalization Test. It provides 100
instructional videos, drills and quizzes. The state library provides separate links for ProCitizen in English and Spanish. These links can be found at the
South Dakota State Library website: http://library.sd.gov/LIB/ERD/pronunciator/index.aspx. A user manual for Pronunciator can be found at https://www.pronunciator.com/manual/.

Om Sweet Om has returned with another series of Meditation sessions on Sundays
(Oct 22 - Nov 19), designed for all types of mediation. If you’re looking to meditate
with others, join Betty Smith who will keep time and offer guidance, when necessary.
Bring the practice you have, just as it is. 3-4 pm
Most of us have heard of Black Friday, but have you heard about Small Business Saturday? It’s an annual shopping tradition dedicated to supporting small businesses and celebrating communities
across the country. Since 2010, Small Business Saturday is celebrated each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. This year, you can get out and support the places you love with the people you love on
Nov 25. Small businesses play a key role in helping communities thrive. They can have a handful of employees
or be up to 150 employees strong. Very often, the employees of your favorite small businesses know your face, may even remember your name, and may anticipate what you are looking for. They give a neighborhood strength and create vibrant, diverse communities. By shopping or dining at your favorite
local places throughout the year, you’re showing your support for small businesses and making a positive impact in your community. In fact, if you spend $100 at a local business, roughly $68 stays in
your local economy. If you spend the same at a large business, only $43 stays in the local economy (Source: http://www.civiceconomics.com/projects.html).
This year, join the Library from 10 am to 1 pm as we recognize Small Business Saturday. The Library
will serve donuts and Bean coffee for
those wanting to drop by and ‘warm up’.
Additionally, Edie’s Book Shop will host
a Holiday Preview Sale to offer up some
extra deals, as well as awarding free gift
certificates to those who bring in a
receipt from any other local businesses -
so many great deals, and local, too!
