@baysectionfbla

On September 15th, over 100 members and advisers came to Dougherty Valley High School toattend the Bay Section’s annual Officer and Adviser Training Day. After breakfast, members andofficers gathered to listen to a speech by Dougherty Valley’s advisor. Members were then split intogroups and began the day by attending officer workshops. The Bay Section officer team ledworkshops for all members, consisting of many topics which range from combating leadershipstereotypes to preparing a chapter for competitive events. Members attended all workshops,learning from both the officers and networking with fellow attendees. In the second round ofworkshops, members chose to attend two of a variety of workshops, ranging from fundraising toraising FBLA spirit to public relations. Members then worked with their respective chapter liaisonsand began their annual Program of Work. This year’s OAT day gave many smaller and newerchapters the opportunity to improve their own chapter and meet many other officers. Overall, theexperience was viewed as extremely beneficial by chapters.

Spotlights3 months into the school year, the Bay Section is showingimpressive progress; however, one chapter has stood outin particular: Palo Alto High School FBLA. With theirextremely enthusiastic officer team, their chapter hasdoubled their registration compared to last year, whichthey claim to be one of their biggest accomplishmentsthis year, and they hope to triple by next semester.

Carl Schmidt is the adviser for Monta Vista High School, a chapter that has been continuouslysuccessful at leadership conferences. An adviser for seventeen years, Schmidt describes FBLA as“close-knit, cohesive, collegial, and collaborative… like a family.” He loves seeing how FBLA membersuse the opportunity to grow in various aspects. “It provided, and still provides, a vital foundation forfuture success in many diverse careers,” says Schmidt. He admires FBLA’s culture of competitiveexcellence, something that has significantly contributed to many students’ success in their careers.One of his proudest and most cherished moments was when he took many chapter members andofficers to attend their first Fall Leadership Conference in Anaheim, which was an experience thatbuilt their chapter. Although he misses the veteran advisers that have retired, Schmidt looks forwardto observing even more students develop and grow as leaders through their time in FBLA.
