SM Å SNAKK SONS OF NORWAY JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA Volume 44 Issue 8 NOVEMBER 2018 LODGE MEETING FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 16 fredag, seksten november NOT Nov. 9 Meet at Shepherd of the Woods Lutheran Church, 7860 Southside Boulevard, is located on the parallel service road between JT Butler and Old Baymeadows Road. For entry use the service road off Baymeadows on Southside Boulevard or by the skinner Parkway traffic light. A large white cross is near the driveway. Park and enter behind the building. You are cordially invited to celebrate an evening of Thanksgiving with your fellow lodge members and guests Friday, Nov. 16 with registraOon and social at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. Several chefs extraordinaire are preparing a feast fit for the hungriest Vikings that includes roast turkey, dressing/stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, vegetables, rolls, lefse and, of course, dessert. Varied beverages will also be offered, all for a donaOon of $16 for this wonderful dinner. Please, please, let us know that you are coming with your RSVP by noon, Nov. 15 to Kent Larson @ 614-7111 or [email protected]. In addiOon to this wonderful meal and the fellowship, our evening will feature a program on genealogy. The Otle of our speaker's talk is “Gebng to Know Your Family: Why and How”. Guest speaker David Jones, a reOred librarian, has been tracing his diverse family history for over 25 years, blending his library reference experience with tradiOonal genealogy research methods. Among the ancestors that he’s found are a Scobsh rebel, an English medieval knight, a renegade Irish king, and a Swiss librarian. His ancestors were among the early colonists in Massachusehs, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. Raised in Columbus, Ohio, he has lived in Jacksonville for nearly 40 years. He received a BA in History at the University of West Florida and the Master in Library Science from Florida State. Anna Large, Co-Cultural Director The American tradiOon of Thanksgiving dates back to 1621, when the pilgrims gave thanks for their first bounOful harvest in Plymouth Rock. They celebrated for three days, feasOng with the naOves on dried fruits, boiled pumpkin, turkey, venison and much more. The celebraOon was not repeated unOl many years later, when in 1778 George Washington proclaimed Thanksgiving to be a naOonal holiday on Thursday November 26 that year – sebng the precedent of the last Thursday in November. Despite this, the holiday was celebrated on different days from state to state and Thomas Jefferson later did away with the holiday. Thanksgiving didn’t become a naOonwide holiday unOl President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a day of Thanksgiving in 1863. Every year following, the President proclaimed a day of Thanksgiving unOl finally Congress sancOoned the day a legal holiday in 1941. For Americans it is a day to gather with loved ones, celebrate, give thanks for many blessings and, of course eat usually following the tradiOonal meal from the very first Thanksgiving!

MAUDRETURNSTONORWAY

Awer more than a century abroad and 85 years at thebo]om of the sea, Roald Amundsen’s expediUon shipMaudhasfinallyreturnedtoNorway.
