Another great field trip for the Solvang Senior Center!

A small but mighty group of members from the Center enjoyed a day of

beautiful weather, good food, friendship and laughter as special guests of

the Santa Ynez Valley Therapeutic Riding Program. And how special we

felt by being included in this beautiful day.

After a yummy pancake and fresh fruit breakfast, members joined parents

and friends for a morning of support and amazement as they cheered on

riders participating in the annual Riders’ Roundup. From tiny tots to folks

in their midlife, every rider went through a Halloween themed obstacle

course of tombstones, giant spiders and spiderwebs with spotters to help

them if needed. Smiles of joy spread across each riders face radiating a

sense of freedom and accomplishment as they trotted around the obstacle

course. The smiles grew even larger as each rider was awarded their tro-

phy under a cobweb canopy.

Before everyone loaded up for the trip back to the Center, our dear little

friend Teacup paid us a visit. Decked out in her Hula-themed Halloween

costume, she patiently posed for pictures and ear scratches.

Santa Ynez Valley Therapeutic Riding Program’s motto is “Walk, Trot,

Heal”. We all witnessed their motto in action and hope to go back again

soon.

A note from Ellen…

The Center is a place to come for friendship, fellowship and fun. It is not just a space enclosed in

four walls, but a space that surrounds you with a sense of home. Our mission is to take care of our

members in mind, body and spirit through exercise, activities and wholesome food. Everyday is

brighter when you know you have a place to go where friends are waiting for you to join them. The

Center is that place. The Center is your “home”.

In the spirit of sharing time with family and friends, we will be closed on Thursday November 28th

and Friday November 29th in order to celebrate Thanksgiving.

Daylight savings time ends on November 3rd. Turn back those clocks.

The Santa Barbara County Cattlewomen served an-

other wonderful dinner to a VERY packed house of hun-

gry members on October 16th. What was for dinner?

Beef, of course, accompanied by a delicious mixed cold

pasta salad, fresh corn salad and sliced bread with but-

ter. The best pumpkin pie in the Valley, topped with

whipped cream, wrapped up this great meal and no one

left hungry.

Additionally, the Cattlewomen donated three rustic Fall

arrangements to the Center’s raffle. These beauties

were every Cattlewoman’s dream: Draught resistant fabric succulents with reclaimed wood and

barbed wire accented posts.

This great group of gals, with a little BBQ help from their husbands, are our perfect fall dinner host-

esses. Aside from being terrific chefs, they are genuinely warm, caring and gracious. They always

bring a group of very polite, yet energetic, 4-Hers along to help serve and clear tables. Our members

look forward to these charming kiddos knowing that this experience is helping them to hone their

skills as good citizens.

Beef may have been what was on the menu, but the appetizer was pure

Hawaiian fun and entertainment. What a treat it was for diners to not

only be serenaded by the Center’s Ukulele players, but to join in and sing

along with them. Decked out in aloha style, these strummers honored us,

their Ohana, with their first public appearance. Beginning with a small

trio, the group has grown to a fluctuating membership of 9-11 folks.

For those who were unable to attend, the Ukulele group played Tiny Bub-

bles, This Land is Your Land, and God Bless America with style! Mahalo

to all of you for sharing your talent with us. Let’s do it again soon!

As we move towards another year end, we thank you advance for your support of the Center. It is

vital to helping us maintain this space and the activities that are offered. As our membership grows,

there are more demands asked of our facility and , of course, more we would like to offer to you.

Center Activities:

Book Club: Wednesday November 6th & 20th at 10:00am in the computer lab. This month we will be reading A Walk In The Woods by Bill Bryson. It sounds like a good read and a great adventure rediscovering America via the Appalachian Trail. Pick up your copy at the Center today.

Arts & Crafts: Monday October 18th at12:30pm in the computer lab with our talented member Mary Ann who always amazes us with her unlimited imagination and creativity. Class size is limited so please sign up early!

Computer Education: Hold on folks! We are working to fill this volunteer position and the pros-pects look pretty good so don’t give up. We will keep you posted.

Poker Class: Yes, the gang is still meeting at Jim’s for Poker on Tuesdays at their regular time of 12:45pm. Give him a call at (805) 688-1659 and let him know you are on your way.

Art History/Appreciation: Monday November 25th at 1:00pm with Cynthia Devine. Come join us on this trip around the world...without leaving your community. Sign up is encouraged.

Staying Healthy, Informed & Safe:

Blood Pressure Check: Thursday November 14th 11:00am– 12:00pm. No sign up required.

Activity Alert: Make sure to take a look at the calendar of regular activities that are offered at the Center. You are sure to find something of interest. If you have never tried any of our exercise classes before, step up and do it now. Isn’t everything more fun when you are joined by friends? Come in for a morning activity and stay for lunch OR have lunch and stay for an afternoon activity OR come in for a morning activity, have lunch and stay for an afternoon activity. We aim to help you take care of the entire YOU.

Center Fun:

Dinner Night will be held on Wednesday November 13th at 6:00pm. The Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians are our hosts and this is a very popular dinner night. Space is limited so please sign up early!

Special Guests: Two very special guests will be visiting the Center on November 14th at 11:30. Please stop in and meet Malani and her sweet therapy dog Kai. They are dropping by to spread a lit-tle love and cheer.

Birthday Lunch: Celebrate your special day with a delicious lunch prepared by Anne. All November birthday babies are invited to a free lunch on Tuesday November 26th. Please sign up early as space is limited.

Veterans Day Celebrations:

We will honor and thank our special folks, our Veteran members, on November 11th with an All-American lunch prepared by Anne. For all of our Veterans, lunch is on the house. Please sign up early.

The Santa Ynez Valley Elks Lodge #2640 invites all of our Veterans and their families to join them for a delicious brunch on Sunday November 10th from 10:00-12:00 at the Elks Lodge 1095 Meadow-vale Rd., Santa Ynez. Veterans are free and all others are $10. Please contact Ellen if you are inter-ested.

Crossroads Church 236 La Lata Dr., Buellton will be hosting a free Thanksgiving Dinner on Thanks-giving for anyone who would like to attend. Turkey and all the trimmings served from 11:00-2:00.

CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON ALERT!!!

It is that time of year to start planning for our annual Christmas Luncheon at the Ali-sal’s Sycamore Room. This year, our luncheon will be held on SATURDAY December 7th 11:30am-1:30pm.The cost is still the same-$20 pp. What a small price to pay for a festive afternoon of fun, fellowship and friendship. You’ll also have a chance to do some early Christmas shopping, while helping support your Center, at our great silent auction. Remember that your dues must be current for you to attend.
