Dear Congregants,
For the month of October I offered two virtual classes, one on the topic of spiritual writing and the other
on the future of the modern synagogue. I was very excited to teach these two subjects and to hear what you
had to say on them. When the High Holidays were over and I was staring at my calendar for the month of
October, I wondered, “Why on earth did I do this to myself?” The idea of going from the holidays right
into teaching two intensive courses for the entire month seemed much more doable this past summer.
But then you showed up. Each Wednesday and Thursday night you continued to show up for our virtual
classes. You brought excitement, curiosity, skepticism, knowledge, creativity, and an openness to each
subject. It was a true joy for me, as your rabbi, to facilitate these discussions. And personally, I learned
something new from you each time!
Although October is over, we are far from finished with the conversation. Thank you for continuing to
email me your thoughts and questions, poems you wrote and read, articles you found interesting, and
information from CBENT’s archives. The willingness of our congregation to get involved and support
each other continues to buoy the work that I do as your rabbi.
And finally, something else happened in October which was pretty special. As you may or may not know,
Cantor Steve and I share a b’nai mitzvah portion, Chayei Sarah. As promised, here are our b’nai mitzvah
photos for you to enjoy! Although one was taken a little more recently than the other, you can see we both
had our “pensive stare” down- a requirement for any future clergy leader!

We want to celebrate with your b’nai mitzvah photos as well. If you have a photo you’d like to share in the
Shofar, please let the office know! We would love to fill the pages of our Shofar with your simchas!

Shofar President’s Article – November 2021 Edition
We are back in business and now is the time for you to take advantage of all we have
to offer! As we conclude the month of October and look forward to the excitement of
November (Hanukkah & Thanksgiving). Many in the congregation have been
working very hard creating events and fundraisers and taking care of the business of
running and maintaining the building and congregation. With regard to COVID, we are not out of the
woods yet, but we are clearly better off than we were a year ago. The first day of Rosh Hashanah and
Yom Kippur services were in-person with a Zoom option, and although our numbers were clearly not as
they were two years ago, it was great to see so many of you. Friday evening and Saturday morning
Shabbat services are now back in-person, and again, it is great seeing people face-to-face. We will
continue to offer a Zoom option for those unable to attend in-person. For those who can attend in person,
please note that we continue to follow strict protocols for all in-person synagogue events.
We are asking anyone attending any in-person event to be fully vaccinated and to contact the office with
your vaccination data. We have formed a Medical Advisory Committee who will be answering questions
when we have major events – i.e. meals, in-house speakers, classes, when must we wear masks, etc.
Thanks to Dr. Bernett, Dr. Levy, Dr. Lourie, and Dr. Shrager for serving on the Committee.
Both of our religious leaders led adult education classes via Zoom for the congregation in October. Rabbi
Jankovitz led two series: In Our Own Words, A Spiritual Writing Workshop on Wednesday evenings, and
A New Kind of Shul: How Are American Jews Changing Congregation Life? How Can You? Cantor
Steve began a monthly class following Sunday Morning Minyan – What the Bible Teaches Us About
Leadership and Government for the Modern World. The Cantor’s class will continue throughout the year.
We are very lucky to have enthusiastic, inspiring leaders.
Meanwhile, a number of committees have gotten off to a very active start. The Membership Committee
delivered welcome packages to new and prospective members for the High Holidays. Thanks to Marilyn
for putting the packages together, and to all those who delivered. The committee also began a Walk and
Talk (or Run for Fun) group which meets in the back parking lot every Saturday afternoon at 3:00 pm.
The Walk is a leisurely walk through the neighborhoods around the synagogue, typically lasts 30-45
minutes, and has been very enjoyable for those who have participated. Thanks to Tova and Lauren for
making this a viable, fun activity.
The next two upcoming activities being planned by the Membership committee are: Adam Poppel
speaking on November 16 about How to Land Your Next Job, and a family friendly Havdalah/Chanukah
celebration on December 4. Weather permitting these events will be in the back parking lot. More details
about both events will be forthcoming. By the way, the Committee is looking for anyone who would like
to speak on a topic of interest, personal or professional, as the plan is to offer a speaker monthly.
5
The Religious Committee meets monthly. Discussions have centered around how to make Shabbat services
more meaningful to a wider range of our congregation, while maintaining the traditions that our regular
attendees cherish. The committee is also looking at replacing the current Sim Shalom prayer books with the
newer Lev Shalem prayer book from the Conservative movement. More information will be shared as the
logistics for this effort are worked out. Thanks to Nancy Fox for leading this group.
While many of us have not been in the synagogue for many months, the Security Committee has spent an
incredible amount of time working on upgrading the building and grounds security. Doors, windows, locks,
and surveillance have all been upgraded, mostly using tens of thousands of dollars of available state grant
money which we successfully applied for and obtained. Thanks to Mark Bernstein, Richard and Joyce
Brody, Larry Gorson-Marrow, and the rest of the team for their efforts over many months.
After Gary’s dynamic President’s Address on Rosh Hashanah, Neal Stolar developed a detailed proposal for
a new Social Action Committee with plans for helping those in need, both near and far. More information
will be forthcoming as this group gets started. Meanwhile, anyone with an interest in participating can
contact Neal, Gary, the office, or me, and we will be sure to get you involved.
The work of other ongoing Committees (Investment, L’Dor v’Dor Legacy, Strategic Task Force, Religious
School Board, the Trustees) will be featured in future articles.
On the next few pages, Marilyn, Marc, and Larisa will describe the activities of the Sisterhood, Men’s Club,
and Religious school. Suffice it to say that they all have an active calendar with events and fundraisers as
well.
For those interested in attending, there will be an Interfaith Thanksgiving service this year. Information
regarding the services and turkey drive will be coming shortly.
Finally, I am calling for your assistance. If you can help with any of the following, please don’t hesitate to
contact Gary, the office, or me:
Our K’Tonton (day care) is down to two classes from five classes. The reason is a shortage of teachers
and teacher’s aides. This is a nationwide problem. If you know of anyone who is qualified to teach
pre-school who might be interested in being a teacher or teacher’s aide, please let Gary, the office, or
me know and we will immediately contact K’Tonton management.
The office could use assistance in producing the Shofar – editing, formatting, producing.
We have services every day of the week. Your attendance at a morning or evening service would be
most appreciated. Shabbat services are in-person and on Zoom. All other services are Zoom only.
Don’t forget your Yom Kippur pledge. These are funds which we count on to balance our budget.
Hope to see you all soon,
Vance

WHO ARE YOU??..... What’s something we don’t know about you?
WELCOME TO CONGREGATION BETH EL – NER TAMID’S SPEAKER SERIES! So many times, we find out something about people that we never knew and wish we had known sooner. Please let us know what your interests are, what interesting jobs you hold/have held, and what you can share to educate or entertain us! Interesting travel or volunteer experiences? – We want you! Knowledge that may be beneficial to our congregants? – We want you! Medical knowledge or professional health tips that will benefit others? – We want you! Estate planning or will writing expertise? – We want you! Esoteric sports knowledge, musical talent, you name it! – We want you! Scott Noye kicked off the series with a Zoom cooking lesson featuring a little history on kugel. Scott, a native Bostonian who has been living in the Philadelphia area for over 25 years, is a “foodie” and an avid fan and follower of the local restaurant scene. He is passionate about teaching and sharing his knowledge and expertise, as well as using healthy, locally grown, and sustainable ingredients whenever possible. He shared a step-by-step demonstration on how to make a Broccoli Kugel and a Yerushalmi Kugel. The fun and learning continues in November! The Speaker Series will continue on November 16 with Adam Poppel who will be sharing his expertise on finding and landing a job! Adam has been in the field of recruiting for 18 years. Education Director
They say in Hebrew “Kol hatchalot kashot,” all beginnings are difficult. In part,
it is true, but there is also so much excitement in starting something new, maybe
even stretching oneself, a sense of renewal, of a challenge, of adventure, a breath
of fresh air!
We had quite a few “firsts” at Or Tamid Religious School in October. We had a session of Ready Set
Aleph Bet with a whole new group of pre-school age children for the first time ever at Or Tamid location.
It was a lot of fun! If you know any families with preschoolers, please send them our way as we continue
the program. The more the merrier!
We conducted our first ever session of Moving Traditions B-Mitzvah curriculum. I t was a family session
that brought parents and children together. It felt so great to reconnect with families in person and even
share a meal outside! The topic was: Today You Are An Adult: What Does It Mean To Become A Teen?
Rabbi Jankovitz and I addressed the basic stresses that come with preparation for the b–mitzvah,
encouraging parents and students to have empathy for one another. Balancing parents and children
priorities in celebrating this milestone event can be as difficult as building “an apple tower,” but as you can
see from the pictures, it can be achieved!
And, finally, I am very excited that we started a program that I dreamed to implement ever since I first began working as an education director at CBENT in 2019! Together program at our This project, launched in 2014 is called Better Together is developed and supported by a prominent national organization. Its goal is to pair together young Jews and older Jews for meaningful in-person interactions. I first encountered this program as a mother. Both my children have participated in this initiative at their Hebrew High, and I saw firsthand, how beneficial it proved for them and their senior "buddies", the warm friendships they developed and joys they brought to each other! Forming a relationship with an older person had the positive effect on their maturing, developing interest in their Jewish heritage, family background, and interactions with their own grandparents.
11
Our Jewish tradition places a very high value on creating and nurturing community. In the time of COVID it is even more important and extra-challenging. I was thrilled that our school was selected for participation in a recently, socially distanced or hybrid curriculum, Better Together in a Box! Our Hebrew High students already had a first meeting on Zoom with a small but mighty group of CBENT Beth-Elders. We shared some stories, values, and jokes. Members of a new generation, about to start a conscious adult Jewish life, met with those who made this choice many years ago and have remained loyal to it. For sure they will have a lot to talk about! Special thanks to Ruth Henninger and David Schreiber, whose help was crucial in bringing us all together, and I look forward to continue this journey hand in hand! Hoping to see you in person for Chanukkah! Chag Sameach

Sisterhood President
Sisterhood is undertaking a new and exciting social action project. Thankfully, most of us have never experienced what you are about to learn, but we hope you will open your minds and hearts, get involved and join us. Believe it or not, there is much poverty right here in Delaware County. One critical area of poverty that has not received the recognition that it needs is Menstrual Justice. What is Menstrual Justice and Period Poverty? All who have been vaccinated and wear masks are welcome to join us in person and find out.
Sunday, November 7, 10:00am Menstrual Justice including the Period Poverty Kickoff Event with special guest, Eve Berger of Moving Traditions will be held in person and on Zoom here at CBENT! This upcoming program led by Rabbi Jankovitz and Eve Berger will address the stigma associated with getting a monthly period and why supplies in schools and the workplace should be available to all! Girls and women, especially in low-income communities, often face the lack of access to menstrual products. Many girls will stay home from school or miss work each month because of the lack of these necessary products, which are not accessible via food stamps, or Medicare, and are monthly necessities – not luxuries!
ALL ARE WELCOME! Free and open to the whole community including all genders! Space is
limited to 50 people in person, Be one of the 50 to RSVP to the office, 610-356-8700 to claim your spot! Zoom link will be sent to the congregation. If you know of anyone outside CBENT who wishes to join, please let them know to ask for the zoom link! JOIN THE ACTION: Here are a few ways you can help contribute to Period Poverty! 1. Purchase menstrual products or donate cash for Sisterhood to purchase, pads and tampons. Drop off supplies to the CBENT office between 11/7 and 12/12. 2. Join us on December 12, 10:00 in person for part 2. Desiree Lamar will speak on how she distributes the items. This will be followed by a “packing party” to assemble the items for Desiree to distribute. More information to follow next month.
