A note from Dr. Allan TenEyck-Pastoral Minister

THE COMING

For millennia our Hebrew ancestors taught us that a messiah was coming to save mankind.

Throughout the Hebrew testament we encounter references to the one who is to come. And, just

as the prophets of old predicted, the Messiah did come, at least in the view of some. We are

members of that “some” group. We do believe the Messiah came some two thousand (give or

take a few) years ago and the event changed all creation for all time. Is that worth celebrating?

Indeed it is and so we do celebrate with great joy and thanks the coming of the Messiah, the

Savior. Just as we celebrate our own birthdays, we celebrate the birthday of the Messiah – the

Lord. We call this time of celebration Christmas. It is a period which lasts from 25 December

until 6 January each and every year. And for millennia the world celebrated the birthday of Jesus

just that way – December 25 through January 6. That is why it is called the” Christmas Season.”

It was the time when great celebrations honoring this birth were held. If there were offices, may-

be even office parties were celebrated then too. Who would celebrate before the event which

called for a celebration? Well, maybe some folks who said “Geeze we could make a bunch more

money if we started celebrating say in November through December instead of just for those

twelve days of Christmas. Yeah, let’s do that. We might even make 50% (or more) of our annual

profit during those couple of months.” “Oh and let’s give it a slogan that will satisfy those reli-

gious fanatics – say - um… “Jesus, the Reason for the Season!” “yeah, that’s it – Jesus, the rea-

son for the season.” “Folks will really buy into that.” “We’ll just not mention that He is the rea-

son for every season. Don’t want to overdo a good

thing.”

OK, so call me Scrooge or the Grinch because I just had to go and remind us of what the season

is all about, or at least partially. My view is if I did not do a bit of reality rub-in I would not be

true to my vocation as catechist. Even the church does a bit of compromising over this sensitive

issue. The first Sundays of Advent do talk of the second coming of the Lord, and then as we ap-

proach the end of Advent it tends to focus more on the celebration of Christ’s birth. The church

is not asking us to forego the joy and happy celebration of Jesus’s birth, but it reminds us that

Jesus will not be born again, but He will come again not as a baby but as judge.

Finally, the late Advent readings give us this message which speaks of our hope and longing and

makes clear to us what the season is also about. “Advent is an opportunity for the people of God

to once again rekindle our hope and our longing for the day – the day of Christ’s return. It is a

good time for us to ask ourselves what would our life be like, how would we live in the world,

in our communities, in our workplaces, in our homes, if we lived out the hope that maybe, just

maybe, this year will see the coming of THE DAY? Maybe, just maybe, this will be the year in

which Christ returns. Can we imagine this?”

Allan

November 2015 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, During World Youth Day 2013, Pope Francis said, “The measure of greatness of a society is found in the way it treats those most in need.” Through his words and actions, Pope Francis continues to draw our attention back to the Gospel message concerning care of the poor and our responsibility toward them. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) responds by addressing the root causes of poverty in the United States. November 22 has been designated as the CCHD national collection in our parishes. This collection is

the primary source of funding for the CCHD’s anti-poverty grants and education programs by giving a “hand up,” rather than a “handout.” CCHD helps people living in poverty join together to identify problems, make decisions, and find solutions to improve their lives and neighborhoods. Of the CCHD funds collected in our parishes, 25 percent is retained by our diocese to help fund local anti-poverty projects. Through your generosity in 2014 four programs in West Michigan received grants. One such outreach is the Salvation Army’s Congregational Partnership Program. Using the rap-id rehousing model, this program assists homeless families to obtain long-term stable housing pairing them with local church congregations. Another is Catholic Charities West Michigan’s Pregnancy Sup-port Services which offers help and support to women throughout their pregnancies. CCHD funded organizations that address poverty issues in a variety of areas including housing, educa-tion, neighborhood improvement, and criminal justice reform. One such organization, Ex‑prisoners and Prisoners Organizing for Community Advancement (EPOCA), works to change the future for men and women returning to society after incarceration. Since inception, EPOCA has steadily grown in membership, influence, and vision. Today, its diverse team works with allies to win legislative victo-ries that improve the lives of families around the country. The CCHD collection offers new hope to those living in poverty throughout the United States. May our experience of God’s love continue to open our heart to those in need and move us to action. Thank you for your continued support of this important outreach of the Church. For more information about the CCHD collection and the groups it funds, please visit www.povertyusa.org Sincerely yours in Christ,
