MERCY’S MEASURE “The End Is Near, Part Two”
The readings for the end of the Liturgical year change their tone to reflect today’s feast of Christ the King. And although we Catholics celebrate the triumph of Christ through His cross, the Gospel we read this Sunday is very untriumphant--the exchange between Jesus and Pontius Pilate before our Lord is condemned. Pilate challenges Jesus on three levels: 1) who Jesus is; 2) who really believes in Him; and 3) what His Kingdom entails. While we ascribe to Jesus many different titles of power and glory, the crucifix hanging on your wall over your bed still holds only one title: the one that counts. “INRI” is the acronym for the Latin phrase, “Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum,” which is to say, “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.” Pilate’s title for Jesus, at times seen as derogatory or sarcastic is the title which proclaims who Jesus truly is. As King of the Jews, Jesus holds dominion over the people of Israel and over all of God’s “chosen people.” This title does not refer to Jesus’ lineage in the house of King David. True scholars of the Bible know that before the kingship was adopted during Samuel’s time, the only “King” in Israel is the Lord God. God allowed the people to have kings as an embodiment of the Divine authority. If a king failed to be faithful, he would be punished or removed by God. In using the title, “King of the Jews,” Pilate is unwittingly confirming not just Jesus’ position of authority but His divinity as well. All true Christians know that Jesus is king because He is God first. Those who see Jesus more as a friend, as a teacher, or as a Savior are ignorant of the most essential understanding of Christ--the one that is hanging on your wall! Pilate attempts to diminish Jesus’ kingship because His own people do not accept him. In Rome, the emperor was a hereditary position, passed on from a father to his son. Yet over the five centuries of the Roman Empire, very few who were born to the throne ever sat on the throne. Through rebellion, murder, intrigue, being Emperor was a very uneasy position (as Shakespeare says). Like Prime Ministers in many countries today, the emperor’s rule would last only as long as he had enough support. Even our president who is assured of at least four years knows that the next four will not be his without popular support. But the King of heaven and earth does not need you or I to support Him. Without our aid, God rules over us. Without our faith, God still exists. As the Preface to the Eucharistic Prayer reminds us, “our praises add nothing to your greatness, but profit us for salvation.” There is great joy in life for those who believe in God. However, there are many successful and famous people who choose not to believe. Popular beliefs come and go as the wind blows. In the internet age, popularity and beliefs change by the minute, Ours is a deep faith, built not on what sounds good right now, but on those truths which are always good for us. I spoke to a young person the other day who was attending a different church since going to college. While he still saw himself as Catholic, he did not see a “difference” as long as he was going to church. When I asked him how often he went to Communion, he said, “They don’t have Communion.” I told him, “That makes all the difference in the world!” Receiving the Body and Blood of Christ is Truth which will feed you forever and make your life worthwhile because Catholic Communion is the Body and Blood of Christ. Through Communion, we are united to Christ. We Catholics follow a Lord who teaches only Truth. The Truth of Christ is first that God loves us; second, that Jesus is risen from the dead and in that truth lies our salvation. Thirdly, the Truth of Christ is that the Holy Spirit has been sent by Christ to enable us to provide mercy and grace to the world. And that, my friends, is the end! Peace,
LA MEDIDA DE LA MERCED “El Fin Está Cerca, Segunda Parte”
Las lecturas que marcan el final del año litúrgico cambian su tono para reflejar la fiesta de hoy de Cristo Rey. Y aunque los Católicos celebramos el triunfo de Cristo a través de su cruz, el Evangelio que hemos leído este domingo no es muy victorioso--el diálogo entre Jesús y Poncio Pilato antes de que nuestro Señor sea condenado. Pilato desafía a Jesús en tres niveles: 1) preguntando quién Jesús es; 2) preguntando quién realmente cree en Él; y 3) preguntando lo que Su Reino trae consigo. Mientras que atribuimos a Jesús muchos títulos diferentes de poder y de gloria, el crucifijo colgado en la pared sobre su cama aún tiene sólo un título: el título que cuenta. “INRI” es el acrónimo de la frase en latín, “Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum,” que se traduce, “Jesús de Nazaret, Rey de los Judíos.” El título que Pilato le da a Jesús, a veces visto como despectivo o sarcástico es el título que proclama quien Jesús verdaderamente es. Como Rey de los Judíos, Jesús tiene dominio sobre el pueblo de Israel y sobre todo el “Pueblo elegido” de Dios. Este título no se refiere al linaje de Jesús en la casa del rey David. Dios permitió que la gente tuviera reyes como encarnación de la autoridad Divina. Si un rey carecía de lealtad, este sería castigado o destituido por Dios. Al usar el título, “Rey de los Judíos,” Pilato está confirmando involuntariamente no sólo la posición de autoridad de Jesús, pero su divinidad también. Todo verdadero Cristiano sabe que Jesús es rey porque Él es Dios en primer lugar. ¡Aquellos que ven a Jesús más como un amigo, como un maestro o como un Salvador son ignorantes al entendimiento más esencial de Cristo--aquel que está colgado en la pared! Pilato intenta disminuir la realeza de Jesús porque su propio pueblo no lo acepta. En Roma, el emperador era una posición hereditaria, pasada de un padre a su hijo. Aún así durante los cinco siglos del Imperio Romano, muy pocos de los nacidos al trono se sentaron en el trono. Por rebelión, por asesinato, por intriga, el ser emperador era una posición muy incómoda e insegura (como dice Shakespeare). Como primeros ministros en muchos países hoy en día, la regla del emperador duraría sólo mientras tuviera suficiente votos. Incluso nuestro Presidente a quien se le asegura por lo menos cuatro años de presidencia sabe que en los siguientes cuatro no será electo sin el voto popular. Pero el Rey del cielo y de la tierra no necesita su voto ni el mío para ser elegido. Sin nuestra ayuda, Dios reina sobre nosotros. Sin nuestra fe, Dios existe. Como el Prefacio de la Plegaria Eucarística nos recuerda, “nuestras alabanzas añaden nada a su grandeza, pero nos benefician para la salvación”. Hay gran alegría en la vida de aquellos que creen en Dios. Sin embargo, hay muchas personas exitosas y famosas que optan por no creer. Creencias populares vienen y van de manera como el viento sopla. En la era de la internet, la popularidad y las creencias cambian minuto a minuto, la Nuestra es una fe profunda, construida no sobre lo que pensamos que está bien por ahora, sino en aquellas verdades que siempre son buenas para nosotros. Hablé con una persona joven el otro día quien estaba asistiendo a una iglesia diferente al comenzar la Universidad. Mientras que él todavía se veía como Católico, él no miraba una “diferencia” si asistiera a la iglesia. Cuando le pregunté con qué frecuencia comulgaba, él respondió, “No tienen la Comunión”. Le dije, “¡Eso hace toda la diferencia en el mundo!” El recibir el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo es la Verdad la cual le alimentara por siempre y hará que su vida valga la pena porque la Comunión Católica es el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo. A través de la Comunión, estamos unidos a Cristo. Los Católicos seguimos a un Dios quien enseña sólo la verdad. La Verdad de Cristo, en primer lugar, es que Dios nos ama; en segundo lugar, que Jesús ha resucitado de entre los muertos y en esa verdad está nuestra salvación. En tercer lugar, la Verdad de Cristo es que el Espíritu Santo ha sido enviado por Cristo para permitirnos traer misericordia y gracia al mundo. ¡Y eso, mis amigos, es el fin!

We would like to give a big thank you to all the ministries and volunteers who planned, set up, served, donated, performed and cleaned up for this annual event. We give an extra thank you to the coordinators Pablo Alday, Gabriel Delgado and Mariana Ruano who made sure all the little details were covered. An event this size cannot be done by one person alone; it was with the hands of many that we are able to continue the tradition of sharing our cultures. Let us also give thanks to the Grand Raffle coordinators and volunteers Theresa Perez, Susana Guzman-Sifuentes and Irma Lescano who made this raffle a great success. Thank YOU! A special note of thanks for the businesses who donated to the 2015 International Fest and the Grand Raffle. This is a great example of communities working together, giving each other a helping hand.
