We pray them every day at Mass. But the sentiments should not be dulled through repetition, because they are so true. – It is indeed right and just, always and everywhere to give the Lord thanks for his enormous goodness to us, but this week above all when we as a nation stop to acknowledge the One from whom all blessings flow. We will have many opportunities to do so – tomorrow evening at 7:00 pm, we as citizens of Norwalk, Ohio, will gather as a civic community at First Presbyterian Church, 21 Firelands Blvd. The preacher this year will be the new pastor of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Rev. Ann Marshall, and the choir and musicians will be made up of members of choirs and music teams from many of the churches in our city. I was edified to see so many of you pick up paper bags last Sunday to fill with non-perishable food items for the food banks of our community which will be collected at that service. I’m proud of you! I can already see in my mind’s eye the kids, grade school and high school, from all our churches who are going to be receiving those bags from you and stacking them in a great “canacopia” in the narthex of the church, an expression of our grateful hearts for the greatness of our blessings. In the past, when we had our observance on the very eve of Thanksgiv- ing, we always had the problem of people needing to welcome guests or to travel to other places where they were the guests. We are hoping that by scheduling our community celebration this year before the schools close for the holiday break we may make it possible for more people to attend. I hope you will be able to. On Thanksgiving Day itself, we will have our St. Paul parish Thanksgiving cele- bration at 9:00 am with Holy Mass. Any bags of foodstuffs that were not brought on Monday to the community service may be brought to this Mass and we’ll also get them to the Food Bank. Then afterwards, as has been the tradition for many years, many, many of the families of St. Paul’s will help distribute a Thanksgiv- ing Dinner to the shut-ins and less well-off members of our community. I know I have written about this in the past, because just seeing that whole operation – the cooks, the stacks of index cards with the names of those who have asked for this help, the tables piled high with the various kinds of foods, and most of all, the whole families of parents and kids in a long line snaking through the cafeteria, each adopting a family and then gathering up the appropriate foods for their per- sons and driving it to them – it brings a lump to my throat to just to recall it. Could there be a more eloquent and sincere way to say thanks to God for all the good things that we have received than to share them with those whose way through life is tougher than ours? Could there be a better witness to our kids by our adults that this is why we have been put on this earth, not for ourselves but for others, than this whole-family kind of service of others even before sitting down to enjoy the feast ourselves? It makes my heart swell and makes me thankful this Thanksgiving above all for being able to serve in a parish made up of people like you!!! God bless you all! From our Pastor:

When the Son of Man comes in glory, may we be among those who have fed the hungry, welcomed the stranger, and clothed the naked. Jesus tells us clearly that it is those who have demonstrated good stewardship by sharing their gifts with the less fortunate who will receive God’s blessing and inherit the kingdom.

We gather together in praise and thanksgiving for His many blessings!

Fisher-Titus Medical Center/ St. Paul Health Ministry

As we enter into the holiday season and have “one more thing” to do, we may be pushed to the limit. When you feel like you are at your wits’ end and about to explode, why not use these alternatives to lashing out at someone or your child: put your hands over your mouth and count to ten.; take a couple of deep

breaths; phone a friend; say the alphabet out loud; if able, go

outside and take a walk; splash cold water on your face; write

down what you want to say and then throw it away; hug a pil-

low; take time out and hug yourself.

May your holidays be filled with peace.

“So, then my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear,

slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not

produce the righteousness of God.” James 1:19,20

Thanksgiving Prayer

Father in Heaven, Creator of all and source

of all goodness and love, please look kindly

upon us and receive our heartfelt gratitude in

this time of giving thanks.

Thank you for all the graces and blessings

You have bestowed upon us, spiritual and

temporal: our faith and religious heritage, our

food and shelter, our health, the love we

have for one another, our family and friends.

Dear Father, in Your infinite generosity, please

grant us continued graces and blessing

throughout the coming year.

This we ask in the Name of Jesus, Your Son

and our Brother. Amen.
