MESSAGES

From humble beginnings as a fledgling seven-team league on the Western Canadian prairies in 1966 to the largest junior hockey league of its kind in the world today, no one would have envisioned the growth the Western Hockey League has experienced over the last 50 years.

The WHL has certainly come a long way and this is in large part due to the commitment WHL Club ownership has made in setting the standard for player development on a worldwide basis. The WHL and our 22 member Clubs take great pride in providing an ideal environment for the top prospects in the system to reach their potential both on and off the ice. From our world class coaching and arena facilities, to our comprehensive player safety and professional development initiatives and our fully guaranteed player education and scholarship program, the WHL is a leader in every category.

As we celebrate our 50th season, we not only salute our founders – Scotty Munro, Bill Hunter, Del Wilson and Jim Piggott – but also our owners and community leaders who, together with long-time WHL President Ed Chynoweth, have been instrumental in the establishment and growth of our League. We also want to pay tribute to the players, coaches, managers and staff, along with the officials, who over the past 50 years have made this League what it is today. None of this would be possible without the ongoing support of our fans, sponsors, broadcasters and media from throughout the League. Without your loyal support, WHL Clubs would not be in a position to continue offering our players the world class experience they deserve.

We trust you will join us in celebrating the WHL’s 50th Season as we prepare to host a series of special events throughout the 2015-16 season including the Canada – Russia Series in November in Kelowna and Kamloops, the CHL / NHL Top Prospects Game in January in Vancouver and the MasterCard Memorial Cup in May in Red Deer.

A Welcome from the President

Welcome back to another exciting year of Kootenay ICE Hockey. The 2015-2016 season brings winds of change to our Hockey Club with an entirely new coaching staff and a roster turnover that we have not experienced in years.

Despite the high turnover and cyclical nature of Major Junior Hockey our organization expects to make the playoffs every year and this year is no different. Thanks in part to the quality scouting and coaching we have made the playoffs all 17 years we have been in Cranbrook, all while finishing with a .500 or better record for a WHL record 16th consecutive seasons (both are the longest active streaks in the WHL).

Our organization has been very fortunate since moving to Cranbrook to enjoy an unparalleled amount of on-ice success. This year’s team will be the youngest in franchise history, but our expectations for success both on and off the ice will not change. Our fans have come to expect a team that is hard working on the ice and ambassadors for Cranbrook and the entire East Kootenay region off the ice.

On behalf of the entire organization, welcome back and I hope you enjoy the game.

TONIGHT’S OPPONENTLAST OUTING: Red Deer visits Western Financial Place on the heels of a 3-2 home setback last night versus the Regina Pats. Taylor Cooper broke a 2-2 tie 5:12 into the third period while Adam Brooks and Rykr Cole also scored for Regina. Ivan Nikolishin and Conner Bleackley had the Rebels goals, while Rylan Toth made 33 saves in goal for the home side.

LAST MEETING: Tonight marks the second of seven meetings between the Rebels and Kootenay ICE and the first this season at Western Financial Place. The two sides last faced each other October 24 in Red Deer with the home side coming away with a 4-3 victory. Ivan Nikolishin led the charge for the Rebels with two power-play goals, while Grayson Pawlenchuk’s wrist shot with 6:25 remaining in the third period stood up as the game-winning goal. Luke Philp scored twice for Kootenay while Vince Loschiavo added a marker for the ICE. Trevor Martin made 33 saves to record the victory in goal for Red Deer, while Wyatt Hoflin stopped 29 shots for Kootenay.
