“I am on vacation, next Hotline will be published on December 4th”~ Carolyn Bowden

By Karen Daniels

At the November 20, Council meeting, Tuyen Van approached Stafford City Council asking for nearly $24K in financial assistance for a new badminton center. The site being considered for purchase is located at West Airport and Murphy Road, across from Luby's. The breakdown is: $10K in waived building permit fees and $14K to the W.C.I.D.#2 for water tap fees. Van has a plan to pay back the city for the $10K permit fees, scheduled over four years, based on the

amount of sales tax generated. He originally approached the W.C.I.D.#2 for their fee waiver, but his request was denied.

Badminton is growing in popularity in the United States, though it's most popular in Europe and Asia. According to Mr. Van, at this time there are 41 specific badminton courts in the Unites States, 34 since 2008. This proposed business would make this the first in Texas. Currently badminton games and competitions are held around town in various recreational facilities, churches,

Prospective badminton center asks Stafford for Financial Assistanceand clubs, but their ceilings are too low and their scheduling for usage is usually limited to one or two nights per week.

The plan for this new facility in Stafford would be a 23K square-foot building with 30 foot ceilings and 10 courts dedicated for 100% usage to badminton or pick-a-ball. Memberships, walk-in rentals, and lessons will be available. This is a 3 million dollar project that would only create three jobs, but, according to Mr. Van, promote "fitness, friends and families."

Mayor Leonard Scarcella and Councilmembers had many questions. The mayor stated that "sales tax is the life blood of this City" and pointed out that "in two years you will save more money by being in Stafford just from no property tax than you're asking us to give." Board

members admired the idea and concept, but were concerned with setting a precedence.

City Attorney, Art Pertile, explained it did not set a precedence, and that the city can decide on incentives for each individual projects. The mayor stated that he wanted a "level playing field that everyone was entitled to." No motion was made, essentially denying the request.

Mr. Van was told by Council that they hoped he would still bring his business idea to Stafford.

First Annual “Show Me City Ride of Pride” set for Sunday, December 1

Continuing its commitment to quality community programs, Missouri City, in partnership with State Senator Rodney Ellis, is set to host its First Annual “Show Me City Ride of Pride” on Sunday, Dec. 1 from 7 a.m. to noon.

Participants will launch their 8.55-mile cycle from Community Park (Pavilion 4), 1700 Glenn Lakes Lane. The ride will wind through several scenic subdivisions,

giving riders an opportunity to view the area’s natural beauty and enjoy a fun fitness exercise, and end at the Park.

Stretching from Cartwright Road in the north and reaching Lake Olympia Parkway in the south, the bike ride will feature 75 cyclists, and has already garnered attention with area businesses.

“We pride ourselves on creating and hosting innovative programs for citizens and are excited about this new City event and encourage everyone to get involved as a rider, volunteer or cheerleader,” said Parks & Recreation Director Larry Foos. “Missouri City is known nationwide as one of America’s best places to live, work and play and we are looking forward to showcasing the strength of our community and corporate partnerships on December 1,” he said.

The “Ride of Pride” is open to area residents who are 16 and older and the entry fee is a toy donation that will be used as part of the City’s annual toy drive in support of Toys for Tots. To ensure public safety regulations are met during the ride, the event will only include 75 bicyclists. All participants will receive a free T-shirt, gift bag and refreshments from “Ride of Pride” sponsors.

“This bike ride is a way to highlight the community in a way we’ve never done before,” explained District B Council Member Don Smith, who spearheaded the event. “I see this bike ride growing in the future and becoming one of the biggest in the area.”

The Truth About OsteoarthritisOsteoarthritis is a common form of arthritis that is characterized by

the slow destruction of cartilage in the ends of the bones. Cartilage is a type of tough and flexible tissue in the body that helps protect the bones from rubbing against each other. The most affected joints include the hands, neck, knees, and hips. Symptoms include joint pain, joint tenderness, bone stiffness after periods of rest, and bony lumps around a painful joint. Osteoarthritis tends to occur more frequently in older people, women and individuals who may suffer from high blood sugar, thyroid disorders, and obesity.

Osteoarthritis tends to worsen with time. Therapies are available to help relieve the pain and strengthen joints, but there is no cure at this time. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) may relieve any sensations of joint pain. Over the counter (OTC) nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen (Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve) may be taken to help reduce pain and inflammation. A stronger version of these may be pre scribed by a healthcare professional. Even stronger pain medications, called narcotics, are available if the pain does not go away. Surgical cor rection of joints and bones may be an option for those with a very severe form of osteoarthritis that affects daily activities.

It was unfortunate timing that the first official cold snap of the season happened so soon after everyone was still getting used to the brand new animal shelter in Rosenberg.

"Somebody had to help us figure out the heater", said Animal Control Supervisor, Jackie Jurasek.

But the animals in the care of Jurasek and Animal Control Officer Renee McAnally are getting used to their new digs in the facility at 1207 Blume Road, immediately adjacent to the old Rosenberg Animal Control facility.

"We went from 900 square feet to more than doubling that", Jurasek said. "We now have more human space which makes us more efficient".

The new space has larger lobby area and is more welcoming with large windows that let in natural light. It includes improved areas for animal prep and care, a designated visitation room for getting to know prospective animals for adoption, and a covered sally port for improved building access and animal transfers.

The shelter has 8 dog kennels for smaller dogs and 12 cat kennels. Ten larger kennels at the old facility are being used for dogs who are larger than a

cocker spaniel. The nine cat kennels in the old facility can be used in the event of overflow at the new facility. The new air conditioning unit vents air to the outside which Jurasek says will greatly help with odor control.

The new facility provides space for the City’s two animal control officers and an additional staff person in the future, and the building is designed for expansion toward the rear of the property as the need arises.

Additionally, the project includes an approximately 2,500 gallon rainwater harvesting tank - a first for the City of Rosenberg.

"The animals won't drink it, but it is perfect to clean kennels, wash the animal control vehicle and water the landscaping", said Jurasek.

Having been transformed by the recent completion of the SMSD bond project, the Margaret Havens Library &

Media Center rededication ceremony will be hosted on Monday, January 6, 2014 at 5:30pm. Hours for the library have been extended to 8:30pm, Monday through

Rededication of the Margaret Havens Library planned by Stafford MSDFriday to encourage, allow, and provide members of the Stafford community access to their resources.

The library is named after Mayor Leonard Scarcella's mother who taught and administrated for a total of 48 years in the Missouri City School District, Sugar Land School District, and then Fort Bend ISD when the districts were consolidated. In 1984 Margaret Havens was elected to the SMSD Board and served 9 years. The Mayor said, "She believed fervently that the creation and implementation of SMSD provided Stafford children with the likelihood to obtain the best educational opportunities, and worked diligently for the establishment and success of SMSD, to the potential detriment of her livelihood and reputation.

No one was happier, nor more proud, when Stafford children got off the school buses and entered the converted builder's warehouse turned elementary school on August 26, 1982."

The librarian in charge today, Adrienne Lee, is very pleased to work in a beautiful library. Prior to coming to SMSD, she was a high school librarian for five years and before that a kindergarten teacher for 13. Ms. Lee said, "Although I loved being a teacher, I must admit that being a librarian is by far the best job on the planet." As a child she loved reading so much she created a mini-library in her bedroom complete with check-out forms for book borrowers. "My greatest love is for a student to walk into the library, select a book that I recommend,

and then return the next week wanting more books. This is what a good librarian can do, and this is the reason I am so passionate about libraries."

Also being recognized on that day is the new College and Career Readiness Center that shares space with the library. Twelve certifications of completion are offered through this program: Vet Tech, Child Care, Basic Officer/911, Welding 1, Pharmacy Tech, and Project

Lead the Way to name a few. Mark your calendars

to be part of the ribbon cutting ceremony and view the transformation at the SMSD campus.

ORT BENDOODIEF

By Denise Monroe RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Well folks, Thanksgiving is upon us. It’s the time of year when we think about tried and true family recipes; the dish that everybody requests year after year because it is so good! The most requested side dish in my family is, hands down, my mom’s Yam Bake. What makes it so scrumptious is the crumb topping sprinkled on top of a mixture of yams and whole-berry cranberry sauce, topped off with toasted marshmallows. It is the perfect combination of sweet, tart, crunchy and soft. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Bon appetit!

Mom’s Yam BakeBy Lee Ann Malone

• 1 cup flour• 1 cup packed brown sugar• 1 cup old fashioned rolled oats• 2 tsp. cinnamon• 2/3 cup butter• 3 large cans yams or sweet potatoes, drained• 2 cans whole berry

cranberry sauce• 2 cups miniature marshmallowsPreheat oven to 350 degrees.• Crumb MixtureMix first 4 ingredients

together. Cut butter into mixture with pastry blender or 2 knives until course.

Yam Mixture• Toss 1 cup of crumb mixture with yams and cranberry sauce.• Place in a greased 13 X 9-inch baking dish.• Top with remaining crumbs.• Bake for 35 to 45 minutes until hot in the middle. • Sprinkle marshmallows evenly over top of casserole and broil until lightly brown. Warning – the marshmallows

brown quickly, so don’t take your eyes off of them while under the broiler.

Inside Fort BendDid a part of the sky fall on Sugar Land?

A burning flare like an angry bonfire about 30 feet high in Sugar Land last Thursday turned out to be a pipeline inspection by Atmos Energy. It lit up

the sky causing some resi-dents to be momentarily alarmed. Although the pipe-line inspection began around mid-month and was done during the day, it wasn’t until last week that people started calling about it since it could be seen so brightly in the night. The testing took place where Elkins Road ends in the Brazos Bend subdivision. The company, by the way, is required to do this inspection only once every seven to 10 years.

Bryan Godoy is a fit and healthy 17-year-old who is extremely active and passionate about sports. He had just graduated high school and was looking forward to starting college when he was accidentally kicked in the face during a soccer game. The bones supporting his left eye and left face were shattered and deformed, pushed inwards by about an inch and pushing

his eye and jaw out of place.“This was one of the worst

fractures I have ever seen, even considering cases I have treated following car accidents and in patients who had been bucked in the face by a horse,” said Dr. Jon Mathy, a board certified plastic surgeon with additional subspecialty fellowship training in microvascular surgery and head & neck surgery at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital.

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital uses advanced3D CT scan technology for facial reconstructive surgery

Because of specialists providing expert facial reconstruction surgery that uses cutting-edge 3D CT scan technology, Bryan’s bone fragments were systematically returned to their anatomic positions.

“We are pleased to provide these services to those patients in the Fort Bend community who suffer traumatic facial injuries.”

3D CT scan technology provides Mathy with high-resolution, 3D renderings of a patient’s facial anatomy that he can use to plan individualized treatments to optimize their facial function and aesthetics.

After Bryan’s operation, the Imaging Department at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital performed a fine-cut, high-resolution CT scan of Bryan’s craniofacial bones. These were stitched together into a 3D rendering that allowed Dr. Mathy to assess the outcome of the operation, including hardware positioning and facial symmetry.

“I am so thankful for the level of expert care I received from Dr. Mathy and Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital,” says Bryan. “I can look in the mirror and feel good about myself again.”

Looking for a fun and meaningful way to get into the holiday spirit? Head out to the Missouri City Snowfest Parade on Saturday, December 7, beginning at 9:00 a.m., and bring non-perishable food items and gently used clothing which will be donated to East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry.

The Snowfest Parade will take place on Cartwright Rd., beginning at FM 1092 and ending at Texas Parkway. Food and clothing donations will be picked up along the parade route or can be dropped off at the end of the parade in the parking lot of Foodarama (Cartwright & FM 2234).

East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry has been helping families in need for over 20 years. During the holiday season the community’s

support is needed more than any other time throughout the year. More than 3,000

individuals each month receive assistance from East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry.

Residents living in and around the Missouri City, Texas community can be screened to reduce their risk of having a stroke or bone fracture. Fort Bend Family YMCA will host Life Line Screening on 12-18-13. The site is located at 4433 Cartwright Rd in Missouri City. Heino Erichsen from The Woodlands, TX, participated in a Life Line Screening event in January of 2009 and learned that he had an abdominal aortic aneurysm and a blockage in his carotid artery. He writes, "Thank you for saving my life!" This

event is being Presented By: Memorial Hermann

Four key points every person needs to know:

• Stroke is the third leading cause of death and a leading cause of permanent disability

• 80% of stroke victims had no apparent warning signs prior to their stroke

• Preventive ultrasound screenings can help you avoid a stroke

• Screenings are fast, noninvasive, painless, affordable and convenient

Screenings identify potential cardiovascular conditions such as blocked

arteries and irregular heart rhythm, abdominal aortic aneurysms, and hardening of the arteries in the legs, which is a strong predictor of heart disease. A bone density screening to assess osteoporosis risk is also offered and is appropriate for both men and women.

Packages start at $159. All five screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete. For more information regarding the screenings or to schedule an appointment, call 1-877-237-1287 or visit their website at www.lifelinescreening.com. Pre-registration is required.

Sugar Land Animal Services will help sell plush puppies at this year's Christmas Tree Lighting event to support efforts that place dogs and cats with caring families.

Look for the shelter's booth in Sugar Land Town Square on Dec. 5 from 5 - 8 p.m. to learn about adoptable animals, programs provided by Animal Services and Christmas specials, including the plush puppies.

The stocking stuffers are being sold throughout the holidays for $8.99 while supplies last. The promotion is a partnership with Raising Cane's in Sugar Land, and all net proceeds will benefit the Sugar Land Animal Shelter.

The Christmas sale is one of many holiday promotions to help find forever homes for animals available for adoption.

An animal angel tree, special adoption fees and help from Santa continues through the month of December. Visit the Animal Services webpage at www.sugarlandtx.gov for upcoming events and specials.

cats and kittens through Dec. 7. Animal Services hopes this special rate will bring the gift of a new home to the cats that were recently showcased at a Mega Adoption event.

"We are trying to get into the holiday spirit and increase the chances of our animals finding a home for the holidays," said Animal Services Manager Kathryn Ketchum. "After all, what better gift could there be?"

Regular adoption fees for dogs and puppies are $105 and $90 for cats and kittens. These fees include vaccinations, spaying or neutering and a microchip with lifetime registration.

All animals come with a

sleepover option that allows prospective families to try out a pet for three to five days. If it is not the perfect fit, they can bring them back. If it is love at first sight, they need to return to Animal Services and complete the adoption.

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension of Fort Bend County and the Sugar Land Skeeters partnered together to take on bullying at Wessendorff Middle School in Rosenberg.

Lessons were conducted for 457 sixth graders, one lesson per week, winning the game with Skeeter's mascot Moe's home run during a lesson on teamwork.

Divided into five parts, Take A Stand teaches students how to run the bases around bullying through lessons on communication, teamwork, and cultural awareness.

Throughout the program, the students practiced communication techniques,

"Take A Stand" on bullying with 6th grade students

learned the golden rules of teamwork, and discovered why cultural sensitivity is essential in our changing world.

The research based program not only raises awareness of the bullying epidemic, but also provides direction on how to respond to bullying and offers skills to promote peaceful resolutions.

Take A Stand is available to all schools and youth organizations in Fort Bend County. To find out how to team up with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and make plays against bullying in your area, contact the AgriLife Extension 4-H & Youth Development at 281-342-3034.

Task force recommends keeping Sugar Land’s red light cameras

TASK FORCE, continued from page 1

The group did acknowledge the cameras are an important public safety tool that contributes to the safe operation of high-volume intersections in Sugar Land.

“The task force has concluded that red light cameras change driver behavior for the better and enables our police officers to be reallocated to deterring crime in Sugar Land,” said Zinn.

Helwig Van der Grinten (Captain Van) founder of the Houston Coalition Against Red Light Cameras said three of the four modifications recommended by the task force were ideas he had initially proposed but were rejected by the city. Captain Van urged the City Council to allow voters to decide whether to keep the red light camera program.

"The voters are the

The first hurricane of this season, named Humberto, a Category 1 hurricane that escalated to 85 mph winds, showed up on Sept. 11, but officials reported it did not reach landfall. In April, a petition with more than 3,000 signatures calling for the red light camera issue to be put on the November ballot was rejected by the city. The 11-member task force was appointed by the City Council in July in response to the petition.

The task force was charged with conducting an independent review of the city’s red light camera program and recommending elimination of the program, modification of the program, or continuation of the program.

AMF Stafford Bowling wants to “Diversify Customer Experience”

made the request for a Specific Use Permit so that they may add twin sand volleyball courts in front of their building. Isbell stated that the company is looking to "diversify the customer experience" and "give young adults something else to do."

In addition to the courts, decking with tables and chairs, landscaping and lighting for added safety, and the possibly of an awning for hot summer days was discussed. Added revenue is another reason for expansion. Since Main Event opened their doors in The Fountains, the public now has a choice of two places to bowl within two miles.

The Committee Members and Mayor Leonard Scarcella asked many questions about the potential distraction a volleyball court might cause to traffic driving east on Highway 90. Due to the current zoning ordinances, fences cannot be added to the fronts of any property on the Primary

Corridor in Stafford. However, like a batting

cage, if the fence completely surrounds the dwelling it would then become an enclosure. The placement of landscaping was talked about as ways to deter balls from going onto the highway. Stafford City Attorney, Art Pertile, explained that if there were an auto accident in front of the bowling center because of a run-a-way ball or distracted driving "the City would not be liable."

The Planning & Zoning Commission seemed open to the idea, but needed exact parameters before they could make a recommendation. The mayor said, "This is conspicuous. There should be some way with plants to mitigate any visual negatives" and "strongly encourages esthetically screening the activities" from the drivers. A motion to continue the public hearing next month, December 10, passed.

The public is encouraged to attend.

furniture, sheet rock, electrical wires, a/c and heating ducts, appliance water lines, and so much more causing extensive damage. One Sugar Land resident said her “four candles on the table being readied for Thanksgiving had big teeth chew marks on them,” and was so upset to know it was rodents that took refuge in her home just a couple of days ago. Although the sticky rat traps did the trick for her, “I caught three large ones, either big mice or small rats,” she said; she’s not sure they’re all gone, and is now in search of traps. If she can’t find any, she

said it may be time to call the professionals, who can probably locate their entry way into her home.

What about the metal bands recently seen around trees in some neighborhoods? The metal band is a deterrent placed around the trunk to prevent rodents and other animals from climbing and eating off a tree or making a nest in it on the premises of a residence.

It’s important to note that rodents may transmit diseases and cause health threats associated with rats and mice. For this reason, it is recommended that quick action follow if you suspect you may have these invaders.

Well, after everyone made sure they weren’t shot and dusted off from the tuck and roll into the closest tailpipe…. They discovered it was not a rowdy participant at the initial Brew ha-ha, it was a neighbor.

So off goes the Posse! When they arrive at the shooting scene, they discover a surprised neighbor… seems he had Handled-by some skunks that were damaging his property. Suffices to say, the skunk stalker had no clue the popo were ganged up over on a nearby road like a casting call for Hill Street Blues!

It’s been a looong time since a “SHOTS FIRED!” has been Handled-by.

FOOT FACTSby Dr. Eric Tepper

BOARD CERTIFIED PODIATRIST, ACCPPS

If your genes dictate it, if you have arthritis, or if you’ve incurred an injury to the toes, you may develop hammertoe. Out-of-balance toe muscles add pressure to the tendons and joints, forcing the toe into a hammerhead configuration. Irritation and rubbing of the top surface of the hammertoe can cause severe pain and inhibit the ability to walk properly. This condition can be threatening to diabetics and those with poor circulation. A podiatrist should be consulted to determine if there is a nonsurgical treatment option or if surgery is necessary to correct the condition. That decision will primarily depend on the health and age of the client and whether or not the toe is flexible or has become rigid.

When you have problems with your feet such as hammertoe, you need to turn to a podiatrist who listens and responds, an experienced doctor who knows the field and can effectively diagnose and treat your needs, a friendly physician who counsels you on the best ways to maintain and improve your health. Our physician(s) meet all these criteria. We provide outstanding service, and will pay close attention to your concerns. Please call 281-980-3668 today to schedule an appointment. We’re located at 3143 Hwy. 6 South. Don't take your feet for granted - call us for an appointment. Make your next step a comfortable one - call us for an appointment.

HINT: For most women, hammertoes are a result of past footwear choices.

Saturday, about 2 p.m., November 16, a man walked through the Walmart that houses the Woodforest Bank in Missouri City, pulls a pistol from his waistband and threatened the teller with the handgun and demanded cash.

The teller did as told by the armed robber and the man calmly left the bank and store without further incident toting an undisclosed amount of cash. After a 911 call to police they responded to the Walmart Super Center on Highway 6, just east of the Fort Bend Toll Road between

Lakeshore Harbor Boulevard and Vicksburg Boulevard on the north side of State Highway 6S.

According to Missouri City police spokesman Sergeant Saul Luera, the suspect was very casual as he pointed the silver pistol at the teller. Luera described the suspect as a male about 6’2” to 6’3”. He was dark skinned with a goatee. He was wearing square sunglasses, a blue shirt, dark colored jeans, white tennis shoes, and a black hat with a white design. Surveillance cameras indicate that he left the scene in an older model burgundy four door sedan.

A Special Crime Alert has been issued by Fort Bend Crime Stoppers after the "Fort Bend Star" broke the story on a residential burglary reported by an alert neighbor.

Sheriff’s spokesman Bob Haenel said, “Fort Bend County Crimes Stoppers, Inc. will pay a cash reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of four subjects who burglarized a home in the Kingsbridge Place subdivision.”

That burglary occurred on Monday, November 18, shortly after 1p.m. Deputies responded to the call in the 14800 block of Highland Way Lane, near Bissonnet and Highway 6 after a neighbor reported seeing a man kick the front door of a nearby home.

Once inside, the heavy footed burglar and two others were seen running from the home with purloined property. They trio fled the scene in a gray or silver Toyota 4Runner that was waiting with a getaway driver.

According to Haenel, the thieves got away with a laptop and some jewelry from this scene.

Information which leads to the apprehension and filing of charges on the suspects involved could earn a reward of up to $5,000. Call Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office at 281-341-4665, Fort Bend Crime Stoppers, Inc. at 281-342-TIPS (8477) or text plus the tip to CRIMES (274637). Tips also can be submitted online at www.fortbend-tx-crimestoppers.org.

in any of the cases. Sheriff’s spokesman

Bob Haenel said this home invasion style robbery occurred Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 20. He explained that deputies responded to the call at 3:10 p.m., in the 1900 block of Thistlecreek Court in the Teal Run subdivision. The victim told deputies that he answered the front door to a man posing as a neighbor who had received mail belonging to the victim. “Once the victim opened the door, the first suspect rushed the resident and was soon joined by two other suspects. They tied up the resident,” said Haenel.

Haenel said the victim described the suspect, who was at the front door, as a male between 5’10”to 6’, about 220 pounds. He was believed to be between 22 to

24 years of age. The second suspect was wearing a red shirt and is about 6’1” with a slender build; ranging between 18 to 20 years old. The third suspect was reportedly 18 to 20 years old with a thin build.

The trio are believed to have used a gray sedan and also took the victim’s 2002 Pontiac Grand Am and a television set.

A brazen thief strikes Human Garden restaurant in daylight. Thursday morning as Hunan Garden restaurant employees arrived for work they discovered they had no electrical power. Further investigation revealed that someone had stolen the copper wiring as well as other metal components from the commercial site in the alleyway. The cost to repair the 30 year business was nearly $9,000.

Once power was restored surveillance cameras revealed the suspect as he switched off the breakers then very forcefully cut through the exterior wiring, tore the electrical box, metal flashing and drain spout off the building in order to take the massive amount of copper and metal.

A business representative said the electrician who repaired the damage told them that the thief had a good understanding of

electricity in order to have pulled off the theft without injury.

The suspect was described as a white male 25-35 years old, at the time he was dressed in a caution orange vest and a black hardhat with a silver or white emblem located in the center on the front.

Anyone with information on this theft or any other is asked to call Rosenberg police or Fort Bend Crime Stoppers at 281-342-TIPS.

A video of the suspect and which could be the suspect’s vehicle can be seen by clicking on the link related to this story at www.fortbendstar.com.

Tuesday, November 12, members of the Fort Bend Chapter of the Texas German Society enjoyed a meal at the House of Blue at Needville High School prepared by culinary arts students and served by restaurant management students from Needville High School.

The students researched German recipes and then prepared for the group pork

wiener schnitzel, spaetzle, red cabbage, crescent rolls, German Chocolate Cake, Wassail, coffee, and tea. The food was excellent!

The picture of the group who ate at the House of Blue was taken on the stairs inside of Needville High School.

A special thank you to Sarah Rioux, Needville's Family Consumer Science teacher, and the Needville High School students for a very enjoyable day.

Fort Bend ISD will hold a parent meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 4, to discuss bus transportation for students attending the Academy programs throughout the District. The

FBISD to hold Academy bus transportation meeting, Dec. 4meeting will be held at 6:00 p.m. in the Travis High School library, 11111 Harlem Rd, Richmond.

FBISD’s Chief Operations Officer, Max Cleaver, will explain current transportation costs, proposed routes for the 2014-2015 school year, and anticipated savings.

Transportation for Academy students is not being discontinued, but a solution of implementing more “satellite” stops is being proposed. These solutions will allow FBISD to be cost effective while continuing to provide excellent service for Academy students.

Residents will have several opportunities to dispose of bulky waste immediately after Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day - holidays that typically result in oversized garbage.

The additional bulky waste collection schedule will differ from previous years and is posted on the City website. Residents are encouraged to visit the site to determine their collection days for all three holidays.

Guidelines for bulky waste collection follow:

• Set bulky items out by 7 a.m. on the collection day but no earlier than 6 p.m. the prior evening.

• Bulky items should be placed at the curb at least 4 feet from other objects.

• Do not place bulky waste items in garbage carts. They should be placed directly on the curb.

For more information, visit www.sugarlandtx.gov/solidwaste.
