Council keeps Q2Q options openGrant [email protected]

The city should build the Quayside to Queensborough (Q2Q) pedestrian and bike crossing option it already has the funds for, instead of chasing money for a more elaborate one.

That’s the opinion of Coun. Chuck Puchmayr, but his view was in the minority when council met on Monday.

Puchmayr wants the city to proceed with a Q2Q that would connect with the Southern Railway of B.C. (SRY) swing bridge.

The cost estimate is $5 million, which would be easily covered by the approximately $6.3 million expected to be available from casino Development Assistance Compensation (DAC) funds for the project. That money, however, is contingent on the crossing being completed by Dec. 31, 2016.

New West teacher and her puppets win Prime Minister’s Awardmario [email protected]

Puppets helped Nadejda Vassev channel her childhood interest in performing. They helped get her a university education, then paid her way travelling through Europe.

They helped her learn English and land her first job in Canada after emigrating from her native Bulgaria. And now they’ve helped her earn recognition with a certificate of

achievement in the Prime Minister’s Awards for Excellence in Early Childhood Education.

Vassev has been teaching junior kindergarten at Urban Academy in New Westminster for the past six years. It’s not exactly the career she envisioned when she was studying for her masters in puppeteering in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia, but, she says, as her skills and knowledge evolved, it’s the fulfilment of her dream.

Puppets play a big role in her classroom for three and four-year olds. She has a small theatre and

uses puppets every day to tell stories and perform songs. And she employs a pair of special puppets, Squeaky and Bear, to help the kids solve conflicts and disputes amongst themselves.

“They teach kids to see things from a different perspective,” says Vassev.

“They feel powerful when they can work out their disputes.”

Giving kids the tools to develop socially and emotionally makes them better students, says Sonja Kennedy, the director of marketing at Urban Academy.

“By empowering kids, it lets them dream big,” says Kennedy, who calls Vassev one of the school’s “shining stars.”

In fact, she’s one of only 21 early childhood educators from across Canada to win this year’s Prime Minister’s Award.

Six of them are from British Columbia.

Each was invited to Ottawa for a meeting with the Prime Minister, a tour of Parliament Hill and other special events, to go along with a cash prize.

Infocus OPINION page 6 | LETTERS page 7

A Q2Q community consultation revealed a preference for a standalone drawbridge option that would run parallel to the railway bridge, but its estimated cost is $9.5 million. Council decided Monday to pursue further funding, possibly from federal infrastructure programs, for that option.

Coun. Jonathan Coté would likes the drawbridge option because it would be high enough to allow more small vessels to pass beneath it without requiring the bridge to open. And it would be wide enough to accommodate an emergency vehicle. He’s also concerned about attaching such an important structure to one it doesn’t own or have control over,

especially if something were to happen with the rail bridge.

That said, Coté conceded that the more expensive option can only be done if more money is found and the city doesn’t have much time.

“Building a crossing over a river does involve certain regulatory bodies, and the community wants to see this crossing happen as soon as possible,” said Coté on Tuesday.

Although a staff report, which concluded the drawbridge was the best technical option, said a decision needs to be made by March, senior planner Mark Allison told council they would probably be able to push it until September 2014.

Councillors’ concerns about the rail bridge’s lifespan if the

connected bridge is built are unwarranted, said SRY president Frank Butzelaar. He said his

bridge has at least 50 years of life.“That structure itself, although

it may look like it has been there

a long time, it’s been rebuilt piece by piece over the years so it’s a good solid structure,” said Butzelaar, who doesn’t have a preference for either option. “What we’re looking for is the best solution for the city of New Westminster and the railroad and we’re open to looking at either structure.”

Although council’s decision keeps both options on the table, Puchmayr likens it to buying a new car within budget but then the price escalates when all the bells and whistles are added on.

“We should just look to build it,” said Puchmayr. “I just think we need to take advantage of the gift of $6 million (in DAC funds) that no one else in the province has received for such a piece of infrastructure.”

The top option, which would have the pedestrian bridge (shown in orange) connected to the rail bridge and would swing with it, is much less expensive than a standalone drawbridge (below) running parallel to the rail bridge.

Resident wants to build two-storey garage/office contrary to city regulations adopted two years agoGrant [email protected]

A resident’s request to build a two-storey garage to accommodate an office for herself may spur a bigger debate on laneway housing in New Westminster.

Chief administrative officer Lisa Spitale told city council its discussion over whether to allow Anna Del Monte’s application to go against regulations adopted

by the city just two years ago may be a good reason to look at laneway housing as a way to deal with increasing density.

“The issue is not new here,” said Spitale, formerly head of the city’s planning department. “We need to find some other solutions in a comprehensive manner.”

It’s a debate Del Monte welcomes.

“If the city had given me a choice I would go the route of laneway housing,” said Del Monte in an interview. “It comes at the appropriate time we should be looking at laneway homes.”

After buying her 1946-built home on Second

Street she gutted it, leaving only the hardwood floors and studs as original before renovating it in the original style.

She’s been operating a business out of an office in her basement, but is expecting her parents to move in with her in the next few years and she wants a detached place to work.

Since she can’t build a laneway house for them, she’s proposing to level a ‘rat-infested,’ single-car garage she hasn’t used in seven years and construct a two-storey one with an office on the top floor.

But in 2011, in response to complaints about large garages, the city adopted

regulations that prohibited two-storey garages or structures higher than 15 feet. Del Monte’s proposal is for a 22-foot building at its peak, but she pointed out since it would be at the base of a hill it wouldn’t appear high.

Del Monte has gathered written support for her proposal from several neighbours, including a woman who lives across the back lane whose father

built Del Monte’s home. She was so frustrated dealing with city staff she invited Mayor Wayne Wright to look for himself.

Her lobbying efforts have paid off, at least initially. The city’s planning staff recommended Del Monte’s application be denied. But in a split vote with Wright casting the deciding vote, council elected to proceed with the application. A public hearing is necessary

before final approval can be given.

Wright, who admitted being “amazed” at what Del Monte had done with the property, knows it’s contrary to the rules council adopted but would like to find a way to make an exception.

“This one has got me because I can’t figure out [how to deal with it],” said Wright at council. “Can we change the rules to make it better for what the neighbourhood wants?”

Coun. Lorrie Williams said she felt sympathetic to Del Monte’s request after having a look herself.

The president of the Westminster Club hopes that when the club’s property is sold next week, and the club’s operations wind down for good, the 130-year-old piece of New Westminster history will end on a positive note.

A court has ordered the penthouse property in the Westminster Building Downtown be sold. Sealed bids are being accepted and they will be revealed in a Vancouver courtroom Monday morning.

Club president Allen Domaas wants the buyer to respect the club’s history and the 100 years it has spent on the top floor of New Westminster’s first ‘skyscraper.’

“This is a unique piece of property and there’s a long piece of history. I just think that after 130 years the Westminster Club should have a respectful end. To have 130 years of history come to a disrespectful end would be damaging,” said Domaas.

With membership unable to support the club any longer, the club was put on the market in May 2012 with a list price

of $1,975,000. The holder of the first mortgage has found a buyer and wants the court to approve the offer for the 7,400-square-foot property, said Domaas, but the club is hoping the sealed bid process will result in multiple offers that will bring a better price.

The Westminster Club was formed in 1889 as a gentlemen’s club, and moved around town for a few years before settling into the Westminster Building in 1912. The club bought the building in 1983 and turned it into a strata ownership office tower.

Club membership has been dwindling in recent years as it struggled to transition from a business club to a social club, a switch dictated by the change in demographics in New Westminster and its Downtown, said Domaas. He added it’s sad the club didn’t realize it needed to make the switch until it was too late.

“If you were a business with a set board of directors you would have paid attention a bit earlier, but being a volunteer board sometimes it’s hard to make decisions early on,” said Domaas.

Will Mayor Wayne Wright seek a fifth term next year?

He’s been coy on whether he’ll run again in November, even though he said prior to the last election in 2011 that he just wanted one more term to finish some key projects off.

I’m guessing the Anvil Centre, set to open next spring, was what was on his mind.

Really, I think he’s done this time. But, in classic political fashion, he said “never say never,” and that it all depends on who appears poised to take over the reins.

If it looks like someone who could undo the progress he believes has been made during his tenure, and who might send the city “sideways,” as he puts it, well, he might stick around.

My guess is, if Coun. Jonathan Coté runs, he’ll be happy to go.

Coté is passionate about many of the same things that energize the mayor, and is perhaps even more well-versed on the new initiatives out there that are making urban centres like New West more liveable.

Coté and Coun. Chuck Puchmayr have long been rumoured as two who might take a stab at the top job.

Puchmayr said he considered a run in 2011 but his doctors advised him not to take on such a large job so soon after his 2009 liver transplant.

Both ranked first and second, respectively, in votes last election.

When I contacted them this week about the election plans, and whether they would pursue the top job, Puchmayr said he isn’t ready to say whether he’ll run.

But Coté admits he’s considering it.

“I’ve given some thought about running for mayor in the next election,” Coté told me, “but a lot will depend upon what the

current mayor decides to do.” It’s a little dance that’s going

on, but maybe at some point over the next few months the mayor will state his intentions, and possibly, give a nod towards the candidate he believes will take the city in the “Wright” (sorry) direction.

Though Coté was considered quite fresh-faced when he was first elected to council in 2005 at the tender age of 26, he’s at the tail end of his third term, and is by no means a rookie.

While he hasn’t made a firm decision at this point, he’s “very passionate about where the city’s going.”

A big factor, he said, will be ensuring such a move will work with his family, including his wife, Alix, and their three young daughters. He’ll be finishing a Masters in Urban Studies next year, so who knows, the timing for a run may be right.

As for Puchmayr: “Honestly—I haven’t made up my mind.”

He added, however, that as he approaches the fifth anniversary

of his liver transplant he wants to ensure his time is well spent.

“Things are good,” he said. “But there are complications with immunosupressants, there are fatigue issues.”

He said he also asks himself, whether he wants quality time, or to go to work 24/7.

“My ego isn’t that big that I need that.”

And he’s been enjoying his work with A Beef With Hunger, the charity he created which processes beef from his Barnston Island farm for groups such as the HIV Food Bank Society in Surrey, Honour House and the Union Gospel Mission.

At 59, he says, whether he runs for mayor, council or at all depends on who’s running and how he feels next spring.

“I really like the direction the city’s gone—especially in the last decade,” he said. “Whether I go into full retirement or not is a luxury decision I’ll have to make.”

Whoever takes over for Wright, one thing’s for sure: they’ll have big shoes to fill.

Who will seek the mayor’s job?

Many Canadians will vote with their feet this week and head south on Black Friday in hopes of finding bargains.

This trek is part of a general trend of Canadians to cross-border shop while our dollar’s value stays relatively high, and although the price spread is just 10 per cent — not a huge difference given the time spent in border lineups and the cost of gas — the general impression is that U.S. retailers do a better job in keeping prices low.

Canadian retailers have been adapting to consumer demand, offering competitive deals and early opening hours for Black Friday to keep shoppers at home. As well, the entry of Walmart and Target have forced them to sharpen their pencils.

But Canadian retailers can’t take all the blame for the price differences. In fact, Canada’s relatively small consumer market compared to the U.S. contributes to higher pricing overall. Foreign suppliers have historically charged more for their product because Canada is a more costly market to service. Transportation, distribution, somewhat higher labour costs, tariffs and fees as well as higher rent and real estate costs all add to the mark-up we pay on goods.

Still, Canadian retailers need to take some responsibility for the problem of cross-border shopping and do what they can to keep customers at home — whether it be through enhanced customer service, warranty servicing or more competitive pricing.

At the same time, Canadian consumers shouldn’t be let off the hook. Circulating their dollars in their home community keeps themselves and their neighbours employed. Money spent in Canada will also ensure that we continue to enjoy health care, a strong social safety net and many other benefits.

When it comes to quality of life, you get what you pay for.

COMMENTRe: Proposed traffic control at Howes Street and Ewen Avenue

I would strongly suggest that the City of New Westminster’s engineering department investigate the two proposals that are being put to the residents of Queensborough. This investigation should be done in depth prior to the tabulation of any results from the survey now in progress.

At the Nov. 19 Queensborough Residents Association meeting, we learned that the data used by the city to develop the two options were based on a two-year-old traffic count.

In the last two years, much has happened in and around Queensborough, and a new data set is needed if we are to make an up-to-date, informed decision.

On top of that revelation, it was also discovered that absolutely no prolonged observations of traffic flow at the intersection have been done by city staff or any sub-contracted experts.

This should have been done prior to the production of the many storyboards expounding the merits of the proposed options. Not only is the production of those magnificent storyboards premature, it is also a total waste of resources.

Less than 100 meters away from this intersection is a New Westminster fire hall, which is staffed 24/7. One would think city staff, in an attempt to keep skyrocketing

taxes in check, would ask the fire department to assist in observing the intersection and to do a study of the traffic flows.

Failing that, engineering could put a “traffic cam” on the fire department building tower and videotape the intersection for a couple of weeks and then analyze the traffic flows to determine the feasibility of the different options before presenting it to the community.

It is not too late, as this project has been in the works for a couple of years and it will be quite some time before the work will commence to finish the job.

SUCH A GENEROUS COMMUNITY

We were touched again this year by our community’s giving spirit on the eve of the spirits.

This Halloween, for the third year, our family collected healthy canned food items

in addition to candy at our neighbours’ doorsteps. The wonderful, spirited residents of Ninth Street between Queens and Fourth avenues, and our fellow members of the New Westminster Housing Co-op on 10th Street, were especially generous this year, donating 104 items for the emergency food cupboard at St. Barnabas Church.

Our neighbours, as always, set an extraordinary example for our two young sons, aged five and three, the reindeer and snowman whose trick-or-treat bags were filled with donated food for our friends at St. Barnabas.

“It makes me feel we should give this some second thought,” said Williams.

Although he had reservations, Coun. Jonathan Coté said he was comfortable going ahead with the process so he could hear what the public has to say before making his decision.

But Coun. Chuck Puchmayr pointed out the city made the changes because people were pushing the envelope.

“Maybe this one has merits to reverse but, nevertheless, if you go against staff recommendations against this one, others will go ‘wait a minute, maybe we can too,’ ”

said Puchmayr.“It’s unfortunate, people have

a good plan and acceptance, but we’re not necessarily [denying the application] for that community but for the rest down the road.”

Coun. Bill Harper said although Del Monte wants to have a separate office area he noted regulations would allow her to add on to the 1,944 sq. ft. home.

“Is this is what this all about, making changes for people’s preferences?” said Harper.

Del Monte, however, believes an addition isn’t a practical option.

“If you don’t physically

go out and look at the house it’s really easy to make that assumption. [An addition] would totally disrupt flow of the house,” said Del Monte, who added she has spent almost $250,000 in renovations and is looking at a $150,000 bill for the garage. Del Monte said she took her proposal to a local residents association meeting and everyone supported her.

“There’s not one neighbour within 100 metres that is opposed,” said Del Monte. “Everyone was for it, they love what I’ve done with the [property]. I feel like I’m being penalized for renovating a house and not tearing it down.”

VICTORIA – With half of the fiscal year in the books, the B.C. government is clinging to a small surplus that was promised in this spring’s election.

Finance Minister Mike de Jong presented the province’s second quarter budget update Wednesday, projecting that the fiscal year will end in March with a surplus of

$165 million. That’s up $29 million from the September budget update.

Corporate tax revenue is higher than expected, making up for personal tax revenue that was $284 million less than forecast.

Part of the decline in personal income tax is due to employment, which de Jong said was disappointingly “flat lined” so far in 2013.

He said unemployment has “dropped modestly” and full-time employment has grown, but the province has work to do to meet its jobs plan goal.

NDP finance critic Mike Farnworth said the heavily advertised jobs plan is a flop, and the unemployment rate is down largely because 12,500 people have left B.C. to seek work since the plan was launched

two years ago.“Just look at the job

numbers,” Farnworth said.

“By their own admission, they’re pathetic.”

LA-LA Land auto extravaganza

Zack Spencer

Zack Spencer reveals what turned his head week with a visit to the glitzy 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show, Alexandra Straub looks at what’s

cool, Bob McHugh goes green and Keith Morgan sneaks a peek at a racy compact concept. Check out the full script at drivewayBC.ca

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Auto Show is full of eye-popping sights and some even include cars! It’s not difficult to have your head turned but it is a challenge to pick one’s top picks but I’m for the challenge.Nissan GT-R Nismo Nissan stole the show with not only one of the fastest cars in the world but the fastest man in the world. Olympic gold medalist and world record holder Usain Bolt was on hand as Nissan’s Director of Excitement. Usain was clearly taken with the new GT-R Nismo, there were also promises to get him one to replace his gold coloured GT-R. Power has been pumped up to 600hp taking this new Nismo version to 100 km/h in just two seconds. Look for the new GT-R in the spring of 2014. I suspect Usain will get his a bit earlier.Chevrolet Colorado The mid-size pickup truck market has been all but abandoned by the domestic automakers over the last few years leaving this cat-egory entirely to Toyota and Nissan with the Tacoma and Frontier trucks. Wait until next year and the choice will include the all-new Colorado from Chevrolet. Building off the success of the all-new full-size Silver-ado, the engineers have taken the same approach to this new truck. On the economy front, eventually there will be three engines to choose from. Out of gate, there is the base 2.5L 4-cylinder engine or a 3.6L V6.

Subaru WRX Fans of the Subaru WRX will be very excited about the arrival of an all-new car but maybe a bit disappointed that this production model

doesn’t look very much little the sleek and sexy concept that was unveiled earlier this year. It should prove to be a capable car thanks to an all-new direct injection 2.0L 4-cylinder putting out 268hp and matched to the first 6-speed in the WRX. Subaru Legacy Concept A head turning design that my sources tell me looks a lot like the production car. The metallic, almost chrome looking paint, certainly helps to make the car pop but the bold front grille and macho stance could very well be included in the final version. Lincoln MKC Lincoln has a long and distin-guished history as an American premium brand but over the last few decades, it has been an extension of existing Ford products using different badging and trim. There is now a long-term plan to resurrect the Lincoln brand with all-new vehicle that use some Ford components but are developed separately from the main Ford line of products. The compact cross-over MKC shares a platform with the Ford Escape but has been designed and engineered to be a very different car. The design, other than the trademark Lincoln grille is very European and the back wrap-around hatch is maybe Audi-inspired. Standard in Canada will be all-wheel-drive and adaptive suspension, matched to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

BMW 4 Series Cabriolet BMW has changed its naming: the 3 Series is now the sedan only while the coupe and convertible version are now called 4 Series. The all-new cabriolet is wider and fea-tures a new three-piece retractable hard-top and for the first time X-Drive AWD is now available on the convertible models. Interior refinements include a new neck

warmer to that blows a steady stream of warm air on the front passengers neck and shoulders, helping to elongate the convertible season.

Porsche Macan This small SUV is based on the same platform as the Audi Q5. This lower, sleeker and much more aggressive Macan will attract a lot of attention based purely on looks. Porsche made it very clear that this is not juts a Porsche in name but also in performance. Look for the Macan coming next year.

Jaguar F-Type Jaguar made a big splash with the Jaguar F-Type convertible this year and next year we look forward to the coupe version, a dynamite looking coupe with a stunning silhouette and improved dynamics thanks to a stiffer body. The body of the car is built with extensive use of aluminum to produce the stiffest Jaguar ever made. This is one heart-pounding coupe I cannot wait to try.

LOS ANGELES: Tinseltown. Hollywood. LA. No matter what you call it, it’s a city of millions and it’s easy to get lost in the crowd. But not if you’re attractive, have a great body and well, you shine. With hundreds of vehicles showcased at the Los Angeles Auto Show, it takes a lot to stand out amongst the plethora of sparkling sheet metal, which is constantly detailed by show workers. If you’re a sexy snake, that’s automatic grounds for attention. The SRT Viper GTS was on display, but it wasn’t just any old venom-producing reptile. It came with the Anodized Carbon Special Edition Package. Aside from 640 horsepower and 600 lb.-ft. of torque being produced from its handcrafted, all-aluminum 8.4-litre, mid-front V10, it comes with the first-ever use for the Chrysler Group’s unique metallic matte exte-rior colour. And exclusivity is the name of its game. Only 50 will be made and they’ll be available as of January, 2014.Speaking of fast things, you don’t get any faster on feet than Usain Bolt does. And if you’re paired next to Nissan’s fastest production GT-R to date, that’s an even more potent combina-tion. Godzilla takes on the NISMO (aka NISsan MOtor-sport) badge with a healthy helping of 600-horsepower and some defining exterior features. In regards to its body, it’s more rigid than before and you’ll also find it has a “factory tuned” enhanced suspension. The aero package, which not only looks good, also improves road holding, min-imizes the negative impact of drag, while giving the car a menacing and muscular

appearance. If you’re a luxury German vehicle and you have a worldwide debut in LA, chances are you’ll draw quite the A-List crowd. The all-new Porsche Macan did such a thing, with visitors such as Jerry Seinfeld and professional tennis player, Maria Sharapova. The Indonesian word for tiger, it’s the first Porsche in the compact SUV seg-ment. Or you could say it’s the baby brother to the popular-selling Cayenne. Ei-ther way, they’re both have some spice to them! Two renditions of Macan will be available: the Macan S and Macan Turbo. Standard features include active all-wheel drive and the Porsche double-clutch transmission (PDK). The Ma-can S is powered by a new Porsche-designed 3.0-litre V6 bi-turbo engine that puts out 340 horsepower. The Macan Turbo hosts a 3.6-litre V6 bi-turbo engine and emits 400 horsepower. Purrrr.Practical and eye catch-ing? – You might not expect that from a cargo van, but when you team up with Hot Wheels, you’ll get exactly that: hot wheels! Ford paired up with Hot Wheels and had its Transit Connect XLT Cargo Van LWB beaming a custom bright blue exterior with orange accents and custom 20-inch wheels. But the fun doesn’t stop on the outside. Sure there’s a new front fascia and grille, and even a one-off “shark-fin” roof mounted antennas support-ing GPS and Satellite radio along with custom gullwing doors (which replaces the standard sliding doors), but there’s a party waiting on the inside.Alongside the custom ST seats, there’s a sleeping area and a 55-inch TV. Maybe I will try my hand at camping again, but only with this van!It wouldn’t be a California auto show without a spe-cial edition Jeep Wrangler. Complete with bronze satin gloss accentuated 18-inch wheels, a matching grille, and other dark parts, the Wrangler Dragon Edition is sure to heat things up. If the bronze bits weren’t enough of a giveaway, the large dragon graphic on the hood will surely let you know that this mythical creature means business whether on or off road. [email protected]

Poet René Saklikar, a New Westminster native, will hold a book signing and public reading from children of air india, un/authorized exhibits and interjections on Sunday.

Saklikar lost an aunt and uncle in the June 23, 1985 bombing of Air India Flight 182 that originated in Vancouver and in which all 329 passengers and crew perished died off the coast of Ireland.

Saklikar’s work is the first poetry book about the bombing to be published in Canada. The daughter of a former New Westminster school trustee, she grew up in the city and is a graduate of NWSS. She is married to provincial NDP leader Adrian Dix.

The signing will be held at the Heritage Grill, 477 Columbia St., Sunday, Dec. 1, from 2 to 3 p.m.

Ground was broken Tuesday on a 19-storey, 130-unit residential development near where the new Qayqayt elementary school is currently being built.

The Censorio Group will build the project called Elliot Street at the corner of Agnes Street and Elliot. President and owner Peter Censorio said with the school being constructed just two blocks away there was a need for an affordable residential option for young families.

“The design intent for Elliot Street is to provide flexible living spaces that grow with the buyer and allow for flawless transitions as residents evolve through different

stages of their lives,” said Censorio, who was joined by Mayor Wayne Wright for the groundbreaking.

Construction is expected to take two years with occupancy scheduled for December 2015.

A grant budget of $800,000 for 2014 has been approved by New Westminster city council.

That’s the same amount allocated for 2013 but council ended up approving more than $828,000 worth last year.

A report to council Monday said the city has already received more than $1.5 million in grant requests for 2014.

Council has decided to send the Canadian Red Cross $5,000 toward its relief to communities affected by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines on Nov. 8.

Coun. Chuck Puchmayr said the donation was appropriate since the Filipino community is one of New Westminster’s largest.

City council has approved the New Westminster Salmonbellies senior lacrosse club’s request for $3,500 in funding for their 125th anniversary project.

In a letter to the city, Dan Richardson, the team’s general manager, asked for the money so the club could do something special that would leave a legacy to Salmonbellies fans and the city. They want to put the funds toward replacing the 12 to 14 aging and mismatched Mann Cup banners that currently hang from the rafters inside Queen’s Park Arena. Some of those represent champions from specific decades instead of each of the 24 championship teams having its own banner.

Richardson also asked that arena staff install the banners in the spring when the lacrosse floor is put in.

The team plans to unveil the banners at its home opener in May 2014, and in the remaining eight homes games after that will honour all 24 teams.

The purchase of a new police vehicle has been approved by council to replace a

cop car totaled in an accident at a cost three times what ICBC paid out for the city’s claim.

The 2010 Ford Crown Victoria was struck by a stolen vehicle on Cumberland Street on Sept. 1. ICBC wrote off the vehicle and paid the city $20,000 for it.

Since Ford is no longer producing the Crown Victoria, Chief

Const. Dave Jones recommended a similar vehicle be introduced to the fleet, a Ford Police Interceptor SUV which cost $60,000 to purchase and outfit.

Jones said the additional funds would come from an equipment replacement fund.

Man crowdsourcing to raise cash for hair salon for geeksMario [email protected]

Ryan Paul believes there’s a little chic in every geek.

Now he’s hoping there are enough geeks out there who want to be chic to support their very own hair salon.

Paul, a self-confessed geek, has been colouring, cutting and styling hair for 12 years.

But, says the Burnaby resident who also does makeup, he never really fit into the salon culture. While his colleagues were talking about weekend parties or their relationship dramas, he was pining to be able to bend someone’s ear about the latest game release for the Nintendo DS or the Red Wedding scene in Game of Thrones.

Over time, he noticed clients with similar interests gravitated toward his chair so they could swap stories as the dyes and foils worked their alchemy.

That’s when the light bulb went off.

In October, Paul launched a fundraising drive on the crowdsourcing website Indiegogo to raise the capital needed to open B-Bombshell, the first hair salon for geeks. He’s looking at sites in Downtown New Westminster because of its central location and easy access by SkyTrain.

And while on Tuesday, Paul only had only $6,400 of

his $50,000 goal before his campaign expires on Dec. 7, he’s confident the donations he’s accumulated are enough to pique the interest of a bank for a conventional business loan. He says the time is right for such a venture.

“There are no geeky salons,” says Paul, 32. “It’s an underserviced market.”

MARIO BARTEL/NEWSLEADERHis Nintendo DS gaming system always in hand, and one of his favourite video game characters perched on his shoulder, hair stylist Ryan Paul is looking to open a hair salon for geeks, and is looking to locate in Downtown New West.

That’s because, he believes, there’s a little geek in everyone. The broad appeal of TV shows like Big Bang Theory and movie fare like the Lord of the Rings is finally giving people permission to free their inner geek. And the Internet has made it easier for like-minded people to find each other and share their passions.

“Geeks can be anyone,” says Paul. “They’re really, really interested in a specific subject. They really throw themselves at one thing.”

For Paul, his path to geekdom started when his family gathered around the TV on Sunday nights to watch Star

Trek: The Next Generation. He also loved video games.

“I enjoyed the interactive storytelling, the colours, the music, the characters,” says Paul. “It wasn’t TV and it wasn’t a book.”

In fact, he says, it was the crazy hair of some of his favourite video game characters that sparked his interest in pursuing a career in hair and makeup.

Paul says geek culture is alive and thriving in the Lower Mainland. Video game studios like Electronic Arts are geek nirvana. There’s a strong interest in fantasy and Japanese animé.

And geeks are no longer the stereotypical sallow teenager squirrelled away in their mother’s basement playing World of Warcraft 24/7.

“I see people who I would never expect in a million years are geeks,” says Paul. “They’re singers, actors, there’s even girls who play Halo. A few years ago they might not have been accepted, but now it’s similar to gay culture 10 years ago, and they’re coming out of the geek closet.”•The Indiegogo campaign to launch B-Bombshell hair salon is at www.indiegogo.com/projects/b-bombshell-hair-salon/

NEW HOME DEVELOPMENT

By Kerry Vital

The temperatures are steadily falling, and it’s time to break out the cozy winter coats, gloves, hats and scarves. However, for those who can’t afford all of that warm gear, this season might be less than cheerful.

To combat this, the Greater Vancouver Home Builders’

Association has kicked off its annual Coats for Kids campaign, hoping to beat last year’s collection number.

“Last year the response to Coats for Kids was heart-warming as Lower Mainland residents donated more than 3,000 coats, scarves, gloves, blankets and new unwrapped toys and gifts for distribution to children, teenagers and adults,” says GVHBA Board of Directors Chair Lynn Harrison.

The donation drive supports the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau, which helps provide a brighter Christmas for families in need. This year marks the 18th year of the campaign, which

brings together members all over the Lower Mainland.“I am delighted so many prominent members of our

association are participating,” says Harrison. “It is so important to help families in our communities who are in need, especially during this time of the year.”

New or gently used winter coats, scarves, gloves, toques, warm blankets and sweaters and other warm items of clothing are all welcomed, as well as unwrapped gifts and toys or monetary donations.

Among the locations you can drop off items are many Black Press community newspaper offices, developers and other housing industry professionals in Abbotsford, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Delta, Langley, Maple Ridge, North Vancouver, Port Moody, Port Coquitlam, Richmond, Surrey, Vancouver and West Vancouver.

For a full list of participating locations and times when you can drop off donations, visit www.gvhba.org/coatsforkids.

GVHBA Coats for Kids campaign will keep spirits bright

By Kerry Vital

Life is full of surprises, activities and excitement, and Ledingham McAllister is keeping that in mind with Charland, its condominium development in Coquitlam.

“We took your whole lifestyle into account,” says Manuela Mirecki, senior vice-president of marketing and design for Ledingham McAllister. “Life doesn’t end at your front door.”

In order to cater to that, Charland includes

thoughtful touches such as a bicycle repair station, bike-sized storage lockers and storage for kayaks and paddles, making the development perfect for outdoor enthusiasts.

It also has the perfect location, just blocks from the Vancouver Golf Club and Blue Mountain Park, as well as shopping, dining and schools.

“It’s all about location, location, location,” says Mirecki. “There are mountain bike trails galore around here, and it’s incredibly green.”

Charland is joining the well-established Austin Heights neighbourhood, and will take advantage of some of the amazing views in the area.

“The views of Mount Baker and the golf course are absolutely beautiful,” Mirecki says.

Charland is equally beautiful, with its Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired exterior architecture, bamboo garden with its own seating area, infinity-pool water feature and

rooftop terrace.“There’s a real sense of pride in the outside,”

says Mirecki.Inside, the 88 spacious one-, two- and

three-bedroom floorplans range from approximately 604 to 1,003 square feet, with a large balcony or patio in every home.

Among the features you’ll find in your new space are nine-foot ceilings and contemporary laminate flooring throughout the main living areas. The kitchen in particular demonstrates the luxury of the home.

“The kitchens are spectacular,” Mirecki says. “They have all those things you would expect in a West Vancouver home. They’re really the showpiece.”

Stainless-steel appliances, halogen pot lights and under-cabinet lighting are just three of those features. The cabinetry and countertops differ depending on your colour scheme. The Dogwood scheme showcases

white Shaker-style cabinets complemented by quartz composite countertops with linear-style ceramic tile, while the Evergreen scheme includes flat-panel cabinets in a warm-grey wood-grain finish and quartz composite countertops paired with a modern porcelain mini-mosaic tile backsplash. You’ll also find a breakfast bar or large kitchen island in most homes.

Luxurious bathrooms feature square-edge quartz countertops and porcelain tile floors. The master ensuite includes a deep soaker tub with full-height ceramic tile surround and recessed pot lighting, which continues in the main bathroom as well.

“These are beautiful homes and floorplans,” Mirecki says.

Homes at Charland start at $219,900. For more information, check out www.ledmac.com/charland, call 604-492-3388 or visit the presentation centre at 102-1020 Austin Avenue, Coquitlam, open daily (except Friday) between noon and 5 p.m.

Submitted photosLedingham McAllister’s Charland features spacious floorplans with high-end details such as elegant kitchen cabinetry, large windows and stainless-steel appliances. The exterior architecture is inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright, making for beautiful curb appeal.
