This is a great opportunity to fellowship with one another and to meet parishioners who attend mass at another time. For Your Information Chanh Van Nguyen, a priest of the Diocese of Bac Ninh, North Vietnam, until recently serving in the Diocese of Lafayette, has published a book about salvation, and has been attempting to promote the book in Catholic parishes and other local venues in our Diocese. A number of its elements are considered incompatible with Catholic doc-trine and seriously deviate from the integrity of the truth of the Catholic faith. Given the nature of these doctrinal errors, the book should not be promoted under Catholic auspices. Chanh Van Nguyen is currently on personal leave from priestly ministry; therefore, he should not be asked to address any Catholic group.

From the Pastor’s Desk

With Thanksgiving behind us, one of the most common questions you’ll hear in the days ahead just has to be, “Are you ready for Christmas?” For most, the heart of that question is of course, are you finished with your Christmas shopping? One of the symptoms of our December is that retail overcomes just about everything, in-cluding the spiritual. Does it have to be that way? Of course not. But doing it differently takes effort.

One way that is different to really immerse ourselves in the season of Advent, which shouts from the housetops, “Not Yet!!!” The fact is that as we begin Advent, we’re not supposed to be ready for Christmas — not yet at least. If we were, we wouldn’t need the time of preparation that this holy season offers us. We embrace Advent precisely to get ready.

And get ready for what? The coming of a Savior, of course. And that is part of the richness of Advent — it’s not only about preparing for Jesus’ birthday, but so much more than that. Advent is about preparing for the multitude of ways in which God visits his people, in which our God is truly ‘Emmanuel’ — God with us.

Consider the Advent scriptures , which work backwards, beginning with a future coming of the Redeemer. Advent begins with the message of hope announcing that Christ isn’t finished with us yet, and that he is coming again at the end of time, to bring all creation to fulfillment. No amount of shopping can get us ready for that!

The two middle Sundays of Advent move to our past, to the time of Jesus, but toward the latter part of Je-sus’ life. We focus on the one who announced the beginning of Jesus’ earthly ministry. John the Baptist is that voice in the desert crying out, “Prepare the way of the Lord!” This Jesus who was baptized at the Jordan is the same one who is present in our midst, most especially in His Word and in the Eucharist, and we prepare to re-ceive him ever more fully, ever more completely.

Only on the last Sunday of this holy season do we shift our gaze to the events leading up to his birth. Mi-raculous signs and heavenly wonders abound, as everything is being made ready for the Word becoming Flesh, and coming to dwell in our midst. Mary is visited, says Yes to God’s will, and grows the baby Savior deep within.

And those are only some of the ways in which our Savior comes to us. He is with us in prayer, and he is revealed to us in worship. He abides in our homes, in the midst of our families, and he makes himself known in the face of the poor and needy. All of these are the visitations of the Lord for which we prepare. So, of course we’re not ready — yet. But we can be, if we embrace the Advent season.
