Think of a personal example of something hard that God was with you through–prepare to share it in Large Group!

Here’s this week’s big idea: God goes through hard things with us.

As followers of Jesus, we won’t always have an easy life. We’ll have to make hard choices, and go through scary situations. The thing is, we don’t have to be afraid–because God goes through those things with us. He never leaves our side!

INTRO: GOD IS ALWAYS WITH US● Welcome: Hi everybody, welcome to Kids’ Club! I’m so

glad you’re here today. Today, we’re going to hear an incredible story about three friends who went through something really REALLY hard. Something terrifying, actually! But they weren’t alone: God was with them. And that leads to today’s BIG IDEA: God goes through hard things with us.

● Ask: Do you think it’s easier, or harder, to go through tough things in life alone? (Let kids respond.) I definitely need other people in my life to help me get through hard things. But I don’t just need people–I need God too. (Share a personal example from your life where you needed to rely on other people and God to get you through.)

WE ALL NEED HELP SOMETIMES● Say: Let’s watch a clip from Finding Nemo, where a couple

of fish have to work together to get through something dangerous. Pay attention to how they get through it!

● Video: Finding Nemo / Jellyfish Scene (3 minutes)● Ask: What would have happened if Dory had gone

through all the jellyfish by herself? (Let kids respond.) Yep, she never would have escaped! She needed someone else to help rescue her.

● Say: That was a funny example of needing help, but I bet there are other times when it’s hard for US to be alone, like when we go through tough things that make us sad or angry.

● Ask: Does anyone want to share a tough time when you really needed a friend or your family to help you? (Let kids respond. If no one is comfortable sharing, give a personal example from your own life!)

● Say: Today we’re going to talk about how God is the one person that we can ALWAYS count on to be with us. No matter how hard it is, He will be there by our side.

Part 1 (Large Group)

SHADRACH, MESHACH AND ABEDNEGO● Say: Our story today revolves around three guys with

some pretty interesting names: Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. Try and say that 3 times fast! (Let kids respond.) These guys were a part of God’s family, and they were living in a place called Babylon.

● Say: The king of Babylon was named Nebuchadnezzar, and he decided to make a statue for everyone to bow down and worship. Now this wasn’t just a regular statue that you see everyday. It was about 90 feet tall, and made of gold!

● Say: It’s kind of like if the president told us we all had to bow down and worship the Statue of Liberty. Sounds pretty strange, huh? And it gets even worse. Nebuchadnezzar said that anyone who didn’t bow down to the statue, had to get burned up in a furnace!

● Say: We’re going to watch a new video and hear about what happens next. Try to figure out how Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were able to get through this really hard time.

● Video: Kid Bible Story / Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego (4 minutes)

● Ask: Did you figure out how the three guys got through something as hard as burning in a furnace? (Let kids respond.) Yep, God was with them, and he rescued them! Trusting that God would help them was the only way they got through it.

● Say: Everyone else was doing what the king asked, because they didn’t want to go in the furnace. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego didn’t care that everyone was worshipping the golden idol, though, and they didn’t care that the king would throw them in a furnace! And even though he did, they stuck together, and God was with them.

● Say: Let’s all play a game and work together, just like Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego stuck together!

*Start the 10-minute timer for the next part of the lesson.

Part 1 (Large Group)

Page 4: November 3-4, 2018 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego · worshipping the golden idol, though, and they didn’t care that the king would throw them in a furnace! And even though he did,

Main Goal: Play a game to help kids understand today’s big idea.

Supplies:

Video: 10-minute countdown timer

Time: 10 minutes

COLD, COLD, HOT!● Say: In this game, we’re going to have to work together as

teams, just like the team in today’s story–Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego!

● Have kids sit in a circle and prepare to play a fun variation of “Duck, Duck, Goose”:

○ Tell kids that the middle of the circle is the “furnace”○ One kid is “King Nebuchadnezzar” and has to go

around the circle, saying “cold” as they touch each kid’s head.

○ When they decide who they want to pick, the king says “HOT”, and they have to chase that kid around the circle and try to tag them.

○ If the kid outruns the king before getting back to their spot, the king has to continue picking. If the king tags the kid before they get back to their spot, that kid is the new “king”.

● For some extra fun: periodically call out “furnace!” and all kids have to get up and go to the middle of the circle and do a funny motion (like jumping jacks, hopping on one foot, etc.) Then, they have to get back in a circle and resume playing (this may be best for extra small groups who need something to take up more time).

Part 2 (Game Time)

Page 5: November 3-4, 2018 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego · worshipping the golden idol, though, and they didn’t care that the king would throw them in a furnace! And even though he did,

Main Goal: Do an activity to help kids understand today’s big idea.

Supplies: ● Piece of black paper

(1 per kid)● Red, yellow, or orange

chalk (1 piece per kid, reused)

Video: 10-minute countdown timer

Time: 10 minutes

ICEBREAKER QUESTION● Go around your group and have each kid say their name

and answer this question: What’s your favorite thing to do with your friends?

DEBRIEF THE GAME● Ask:

○ What did you have to do to win the game? (Let kids respond.) Yeah, get as many members over to your team as possible. You worked together to try and tag people!

○ What if each of you had to work completely alone, and you had to try and get everyone else in the room on your own little team, without any help from others? How would that go? (Let kids respond.) Yeah, that would be SO much harder! It would probably be weeks before someone finally won.

○ What other times in your life would it be hard to do something by yourself? (Let kids respond.)

● Do:○ Give each kid a piece of chalk and piece of black

paper.○ Let kids retell the story by drawing it on the paper.

Draw images of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the furnace, but they’re not getting burnt because God is with them, and kept them safe.

○ Let them write those things on the black paper, and draw flames of fire all around them! Let them be creative, and draw the fire (or a furnace) however they want!

○ If kids are old enough, challenge them to draw a picture of something they need God’s help with, that they can’t do on their own!

Part 3 (Cool Down Time)

Page 6: November 3-4, 2018 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego · worshipping the golden idol, though, and they didn’t care that the king would throw them in a furnace! And even though he did,

Main Goal: Give kids a chance to respond to what they’ve heard today, and worship!

Time: 15 minutes

*The 10-second countdown video is to help kids refocus and transition back into Large Group. These timers will become a permanent part of lessons, and include a funny clip at the end!

*Play the 10-second countdown video to help kids refocus as they get back into one large group.

GOD IS ALWAYS WITH US● Say: They trusted in God, and followed him when they

were going through something really hard and scary. And God not only rescued them from the fire...he actually went into it with them!

● Say: God does the same for us. When we’re facing something hard, or sad, or scary, he doesn’t leave us to deal with it alone. He will always walk with us through painful times, when we’re worried or afraid.

● Say: Let’s read this verse from Deuteronomy that helps us understand just how much God loves us, and will go hard things with us.

● Slide: Deuteronomy 31:8 The Lord himself will go ahead of you. He will be with you. He will never leave you. He’ll never desert you. So don’t be afraid. Don’t lose hope.

RESPONSE TIME AND WORSHIP● Say: Right now, take a minute to think about what our own

“fiery furnace” is. It may not be a real fire, but it might be something in your life that’s hard for you. Close your eyes, and picture it. (Let kids have a few moments of silence.) Now picture that God is standing beside you, as you go through it. He’s with you, no matter what. (Let kids remain silent for a few more seconds.)

● Pray: God, we trust that you will be with us no matter what, even when we go through hard things. Thank you for loving us so much, that you’ll never leave us alone. Amen!

● Say: Now let’s worship Jesus, and give him all our attention! Let’s stand up, and give God all our singing, dancing and energy!

● Music Video: Time to Dance● Music Video: You Are

Part 4 (Large Group)

Page 7: November 3-4, 2018 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego · worshipping the golden idol, though, and they didn’t care that the king would throw them in a furnace! And even though he did,

Main Goal: Discuss today’s story and how it applies to kids’ lives through asking questions and doing a hands-on activity.

Supplies: ● Markers (1 set/group)● Fiery flame verse card

(1/kid)

Time: 10 -15 minutes (or until parents pick up)

Tip: Pray together as a group. (If a volunteer wants to pray, let them go for it! You can also ask kids for specific things that they would like prayer for.)

EXTRA TIME?● Give kids maze and

word-search activity sheets to work on until their parents pick them up.

RESPOND TO THE STORY● How did Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego follow God?

(Refused to bow to the statue, even if it meant being thrown in the furnace.)

● What happened when the King threw them in the fiery furnace? (God/an angel of the Lord appeared and stayed with them in the furnace; they were protected.)

● What do you think they were thinking at that moment, when they were facing burning hot fire?

● What kind of “fire” are going through right now? What’s one hard thing that you’re facing?

● What hard thing did Jesus go through to rescue us? (He died on the cross to rescue us from all the wrong things in the world.)

MAKE IT PERSONAL● Hand each kid a “fiery flame” verse card, and read the

verse together. Remind them that God stayed with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego when they were going through something hard, and God will always be with us too!

● Pass out markers. Have kids turn their card over, and draw a picture in the blank space of one way they can follow God this week, even if it’s something hard or scary. (It could be things like: talking to someone new, saying you’re sorry to someone, inviting a friend to come to Kids’ Club with you, praying out loud, reading the Bible, helping someone do their chores, sharing, etc.)

● Then, have them draw Jesus in the picture, going through that hard thing with them!

● If there’s time, teach kids some fun motions to go along with Deuteronomy 31:8!

○ The Lord himself will go ahead of you. (Point upwards)

○ He will be with you. (Give yourself a big hug)○ He will never leave you. He’ll never desert you.

(Cross your arms back and forth in front of you)○ So don’t lose hope. Don’t be afraid. (Jump up

and down and act really excited!)
