Stephen Harris wasn’ttrying to be Spike Jonzewhen he bought a
Canon 7D. Making musicwas enough. He taught him-self to shoot and edit videosbecause he needed some, andno one else was doing it.
Harris, known as ST 2Lettaz and half of the rap duoG-Side, stepped up to makesolid, low-budget videos forartists in the trenches ofHuntsville, Ala., with himselfand his partner David “YungClova” Williams.
“It was more that we didn’thave a quality director here,”Harris said. “I downloadedSony Vegas on my laptop; Ididn’t know what I wasdoing.”-
G-Side transcends theduo’s tough corner of theSouth by promoting its close-knit community and hardersounds to an audience thatspans wide. The pair returnsto its streets of origin withIsland, out Nov. 11. G-Sidestops at Hailey’s Monday insupport of the record for afree show with DJ Kluck
Chosterman supporting.Island will be available
exclusively on Bandcamp forthe first few months. SellingJanuary’s The One …Cohesive through the onlinemusic distributor gave Harrisand the Slow Motion Soundzlabel crew a clear picture ofwho latched on to G-Side’sopen, collaborative energyand rich cuts on that record.Users of the site can accessthe demographics of listenerswho stream the tracks andcustomers who purchase themusic for download.
“The sales are so all over theplace — you can’t try to sell tojust one demographic. Harrissaid. “[The findings] allowedus to make exactly what wewanted. It showed us we havetrue, die-hard fans. We don’thave to make the next radio
hit, or club banger. They likewhat we do.”
The duo has shelteredmelody through working withor sampling bands like Aus-tralian psych outfit TameImpala and San Francisco’sGeographer, who Harris saidhe found when “crazy sounds”reached him through a fenceduring Austin’s South bySouthwest music festival:“There was this guy [NathanBlaz] up there with a cello, and it was killin’ me.”
But Island, produced byAlabama’s Block Beattaz, for-goes hooks for a strong state-ment about the pair’s powerto do what they want, whenthey want. This time, G-Side“just had fun rappin’ again,”said Harris.
Harris said the title of therecord speaks of G-Side’splace in the Huntsville sound,a sound the duo has opened tonew sonic possibilities but stilldwells happily within.
“We weren’t outcastedhere — we chose to be here,”Harris said.

New York alt-rockers the Felice Brothers will surely find a friendly town in Denton when the band arrives in support of
Celebration Florida, released in May. The quintet shakes up its alternative rock with the sort of setup that Denton indie
music buffs cotton to: strings, acoustic noise like bells, and piano. Whining vocals and brooding lyrics pair with naked,
hooky guitar riffs for satisfying effect. If you like to dance at your live shows, skip the Felice Brothers. If you like to listen, or
tease out subtle techniques from the music, show up at Dan’s Silverleaf on Friday night. Gill Landry of Old Crow Medicine

Norwood plans to do justthat, but that evening will bespent singing behind his dou-ble bass, with some of hisfavorite local musicians.
Norwood took his gear toNew York, marveled at therecord cold snap and promptlyheaded to Louisiana for a gig.His worldly possessions stayedin New York while Norwoodsettled in for the coming holi-day season near New Orleans.

Mozart’s Sister () In this
French-language film, a compelling
story, exquisite photography, and
beautiful music balance out over a
wooden production and bland leads.
Mozart’s older sister Nannerl (Marie
Feret) was a 1760s Zelig in her trav-
els across the continent with her par-
ents. She befriends the daughter of
Louis XV and, later, at court, mas-
querades as a man and meets
France’s dauphin, Louis Capet, the
future Louis XVI. Despite some
intrigue, the film never builds an
engaging narrative. But it looks great.

Anyone curious as to whatbig-time filmmakers do in theirspare time might find theanswer in The Skin I Live In.
They watch other movies. This new feature from Span-
ish auteur Pedro Almodovar —an entertaining mix of sciencefiction, science fact and horror— shows the director borrow-ing from many who have comebefore, including himself.Georges Franju’s 1960 Frenchhorror classic Eyes Without aFace looks to have inspiredmuch, including the film’smask-wearing main character.
Almodovar’s genre-bendingfilm progresses at its own pace, dropping hints as to what thedirector intends, yet never tip-ping its hand. Almodovar baseshis film on the recently devel-oped medical breakthrough offace transplantation.
But, being Almodovar, with apenchant for the Grand Guig-nol, he doesn’t settle for a facetransplant. Instead, he coversan entire body with a secondskin, bit by bit. And, for goodmeasure, he throws in a sexchange.
Hardly any of this is grisly orgraphic but is actually visuallyalluring in the hands of cine-matographer José Luis Alcaine,a man who knows how to light aroom and how to accentuateAlmodovar’s trademark use ofvibrant colors. Instead of rou-tine horror territory, Almodovarfocuses more intently on the

Antonio Banderas workswith Almodovar for the firsttime in many years, playingresearch physician RobertLedgard. When first seen, hetends to a strange woman(Elena Anaya) wrapped in afleshy body suit, and some-times a mask. She lives in whatlooks like the basement ofLedgard’s spacious house.
Almodovar regular Marisa
Paredes plays Marilia, themasked woman’s personalattendant and the faithful fam-ily retainer through whomAlmodovar indulges in afavorite theme of fractured lin-eage.
For the film’s first third or so,characters enter and exit withlittle explanation. Finally,Almodovar flashes back sixyears and tells the storiesbehind the fiery death of thephysician’s wife and the rape
and eventual destabilization ofhis young daughter. Both figureinto the strange creatureinhabiting Ledgard’s hiddenenclosure.
Almodovar fleshes out hismix of personal stories so thelast part of the film becomes astory of revenge and, later, anidentity breakdown. It is anodd blend, from start to finish, sometimes over-the-top andsometimes maudlin, but alwayscompelling.

COVER STORY
By Lucinda BreedingFeatures Editor
If you could describe Denton Community Theatre’s stag-ing of Macbeth, it would be this: Everything ends inblood. Director Julie Brinker, who works part time as the com-
munity theater’s community outreach director, isn’t shyabout the blood in Macbeth.
“We have a lot of stage blood,”Brinker said.
Macbeth is one ofShakespeare’s most-producedtragedies. At its heart, it’s thestory of a rising Scottish star, asoldier and nobleman who isrewarded for his service to KingDuncan with a title. Ambitionand greed lead Macbeth to ruin, and, as the saying goes, headsroll. Every character gets bloodon his hands, down to LadyMacbeth and Macduff,Macbeth’s best friend.
“When I found out the company was going to do thisshow, I wrote a concept statement aimed at our core audi-ence. Basically, it was traditional with lots of excitingpoints,” Brinker said. “I really wanted to direct this show.”
The company’s production board green-lighted her con-cept, and Brinker was off.
Previously, Brinker had directed only scenes from theshow. She said she knew auditions would dictate some ofher decisions, but she was sure about some core ideas.
She knew the show would be set between 1040 and1050 in the moorland of Scotland. Macbeth and hisbrethren live among the rocky woods in the center of thecountry. The soldiers wear tartans, and the king’s riches areoffstage in favor of a set that suggests stone structures,

ruins and the mouth of a cave. “I wanted a basic unit set
because I wanted people to beable to use their imagination,”she said.
Brinker also set about mak-ing Macbeth as simple as shecould.
“I spent a month cutting it,”she said. “All the battles andfight scenes, I kept. I cut anypolitical reference of the time.Anything that was for [King]James, I got rid of it. I wanted aclean through-line.”
It wasn’t arduous. “You know, when you have
ghosts, murder and lust, youdon’t have to do too much moreto reel folks in,” she said. “It’s allthere. Everything you need fora great story? All there.”
Brinker hasn’t soft-pedaledthe violence in the play.Macbeth is soaked in blood andshrouded in guilt, and Brinkersaw no reason to sanitize theshow. In fact, she made somedecisions that draw the dra-matic tension fairly taut. ThisMacbeth spares no tendernessfor innocent bystanders.
Auditions brought the direc-tor some delicious surprises —namely actor Jordan Love, ayoung, strapping man to fill thetitle role.
“So often, when you seeMacbeth, Macbeth is this 40-or 50-something, grizzled war-rior with a trophy wife whomanipulates him with her sex-uality. I wanted someone whocould have a soul mate in LadyMacbeth,” Brinker said. “Ilucked out. I got this hot youngcouple to play those roles, andit’s been pretty cool to watchthese little moments they cre-ate. There’s real chemistrythere.”
Love plays opposite AshRobbins, who said she’s alwayswanted to take on LadyMacbeth, a character drawnwith such dimension that thename is assigned to real-lifewomen who pursue politicalcareers or dare to claim ambi-tions publicly. Lady Macbeth isoften portrayed as a schemingwoman with a taste for powerthat exceeds her conscience.
“I think a lot of people have alot of misconceptions abouther,” Robbins said. “I’ve hadsome friends ask me, ‘Are you

Macbeth
going to play her shrill … orsexy and sultry?’ I think she’smisunderstood.”
In this staging, Robbins saidLady Macbeth is more compli-cated than conniving. Brinkersaid the fact that there isn’t abig age gap between the actorschanges the onstage dynamic.Robbins agreed.
“He’s a thane,” Robbins saidof Macbeth. “He’s a mightywarrior, and she loves him sointensely that she thinks hedeserves to be king. She loveshim so much that she’s willingto do whatever has to be doneto get him there. I think sheloses sight of her convictions. Ithink all women have thepotential to do something darkfor someone they love.”
Theater veteran Pat Watson
plays Macduff, Macbeth’sfriend and the conscience of theplay. Watson’s no Shakespeareneophyte. He’s performed inMuch Ado About Nothing,Twelfth Night and A Mid-summer Night’s Dream.
Macduff is a reluctant hero, and Watson said he wants toexplore his human side.
“I think of him as a familyman. You see him as a humanbeing who loves his children,”he said. “After his friend killshis family, Macduff becomessomeone who I think is goingto need psychiatry, even if hewon’t get it because there was-n’t that sort of thing in thosedays.”
Brinker said her actors haveto tell the story. They’ve beengiven swords, battle axes and
lots of blood. But the intentionsare at the heart of the story. Atits end, the story is about con-sequence and victories madehollow by loss.
“I have so much respect foractors who can take thesewords and get up onstage andthen make it sound like thisstuff comes out of their mouthsevery day,” Brinker said. “Get-ting people over the language, getting the patterns and trans-lating the ideas is the hardestpart for the actors, becausethey’ve got to get the audienceover the language. I have a lotof respect for these actors.”
