LIFE TOGETHER Dear Friends, I recently had a meeting with those who are overseeing the progress of the road construction in front of the Church property. As you can see there has been some increased pace of this phase of the construction. I am told that near Thanksgiving time the traffic lights will be turned on again as Phase 3 of the program will unfold. Construction will include some work in front of our second [main] entrance/exit which will prevent some certain turns for a few days, but #2 will stay open. Be alert to these changes and thank you for your flexibility. ☺ These changes will be for the better. I thank sincerely all who took part in the recent Parish Family Fest. The members of the Community Life Commission took the lead and I want to personally thank them: Mr. and Mrs. David and Theresa Himel, Mr. and Mrs. Greg and Denise Bergeron, Mr. and Mrs. Rudy and Ann Wolf, Mrs. Melba LaFargue, Mrs. Cecile Martin. I also thank the Knights of Columbus for the leadership and manpower, members of the Parish Men’s Retreat Team, Boy Scout Troops and all who participated during the day. The Parish is all the better for these kinds of events. I recently met with the Parish Council of Ministers to discuss some new initiatives. One is whether we should reinstate some kind of annual parish Fair or Event. The Council urged that this conversation begin which it will. As of this writing we have $1.74 million in pledges for our Capital Campaign and $415,216 [-$174,000] in cash. Your participation in this Capital Campaign effort by your prayers and your financial support will help make this effort successful. If you have not yet returned your Letter of Intent please do so now. We are nearing our next goal of $2 million and with your help and prayers we will make this next goal. Our “newly” annual Fishing with Mom and Dad is next Saturday 9:00am-1:00pm at Waddil Wildlife Refuge. We’ve asked you to sign up in Church only to allow us to contact you in case of rain out. This day will be a fun time with food, prizes, fellowship and fish! No charge. Bring your child or grandchild or niece or nephew or neighbor and come out. The Diocesan Year of Faith is being locally produced through a number of venues. One of those

will be a November 27th gathering for all Liturgical Ministers which will focus on spiritual formation for ministry. We will utilize the newly produced FINDING GOD presentation DVD which will guide the learning and discussion. While focused on the ministry of those who work in the parish liturgy, all parishioners are welcome and encouraged to attend. Not too early to put Thanksgiving morning into your calendar for Mass at 8:30am in Church. Hope your week blesses you. Love,

FINDING GOD IN YEAR OF FAITH SERIES TO BEGIN

“Finding God”: On Sunday, November 4th, our parish will offer the first in a series of presentations aimed at adult Catholics to help deepen our relationship with God during this “The Year of Faith.” Our Diocese has designed a series of seven sessions, which most parishes will be offering over the course of the coming year. These sessions will be built around a video presentation and discussion of a topic related to deepening faith. This first presentation will be entitled, “Finding God” and will be held in the school library from 9:45 to 11:15am. Please take advantage of this opportunity to deepen your relationship with God during this “The Year of Faith.”

The Year of Faith October 2012 – November 2013

Pope Benedict, in declaring The Year of Faith, has asked us as Catholics to strengthen our faith and draw the world to faith by our example. The Pope has also asked us to study the lives of the saints as part of this The Year of Faith in order to follow the examples they set for us.

St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, MSC, the first U.S. citizen to be canonized, came to the United States as a missionary from Italy. She founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and, over 35 years, started six institutions for the poor, the

abandoned, the uneducated and the sick. She died in 1917 and is the patron saint of immigrants.

May we recommend……. A Catholic Family Advent $7.99 Published by Franciscan Media (800-488-0488) Item #B36492 Susan Hines-Brigger, mother of four, knows the weeks leading up to Christmas can easily be a nightmare of whinny behavior, crowded to do lists, and less than spiritual experiences. This booklet has the answer! Each day offers a Scripture reflection, short meditation, a fresh idea for an easy family activity, and short prayer. Read the Catechism in One Year - Sign up to have parts of the catechism e-mailed to you each morning. For the The Year of Faith, Pope Benedict XVI has asked us to become familiar with the catechism. This is a great tool to help you! Go to www.flocknote.com and sign up to have this delivered to your email account each day.

CROP Hunger Walk November 4th, 2:30pm

The purpose of this 2 mile walk is to raise awareness and funds to make a difference in the lives of hungry and impoverished people locally and around the world. The walk starts at Catholic Charities, 1900 S. Acadian Thruway, and travels towards Catholic High and back. Walkers are encouraged to bring canned goods and make a donation to help others in need. T-shirts are available for walkers that make a minimum donation of $10.00. Twenty-five percent of the funds donated will stay here in Baton Rouge to benefit Catholic Charities, the Holy Grill, and the Food Bank; the remainder will help globally. For more info, see www.brcropwalk.org. Youth may obtain service hours for participating in this event. Contact Cindy Murphy at 603.5853, or [email protected]. If you want to walk, meet us at Catholic Charities and sign-up on the SJV registration sheet. Come, and enjoy the music, food, and fellowship! It’s a great time!

THE CHALLENGE OF FAITHFUL

CITIZENSHIP A Catholic Call to Political

Responsibility

Many political issues have important moral dimensions that must be considered. Over the years our bishops have issued statements applying Catholic Social Teaching to the public concerns of our day. In Faithful Citizenship, they offer a brief summary of their positions on issues. “Protecting Human Life” begins with our opposition to abortion and euthanasia and extends to our opposition to cloning, assisted suicide, and the death penalty. “Promoting Family Life” focuses on promotion of marriage, parental choice in education, responsible communications, and moral and economic support for families. “Pursuing Social Justice” requires working for a more just economic life with decent jobs and just wages, providing adequate assistance to poor families, overcoming a culture of violence, and combating discrimination. “Practicing Global Solidarity” addresses overcoming hunger and global poverty, reducing debt and promoting development, responding to the needs of immigrants and refugees, and pursuing peace. Excerpt from “A Summary of the Statement by the Administrative Committee of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops”; see www.uscb.org/faithfulcitizenship for the complete statement.
