McDaniel College Educator’s Legacy Scholarship Current high school seniors with at least a 2.5 GPA whose parent or guardian is currently employed full time in K-12 education within a school setting and has worked full time in education for a minimum of the past four consecutive school years are eligible to receive the Educator’s Legacy Scholarship at up to $25,000 per year ($100,000 over four years) to help fund his/her college education. The Howard County Professional Fire Fighters Association Scholarship The Howard County Professional Fire Fighters Association, IAFF Local 2000, is pleased to an-
nounce that we will provide a $500 scholarship for a graduating senior from each of our Howard
County public high schools.
This scholarship is geared to help the “average” student who displays exceptional qualities and
effort rather than being an award for the highest grades or sports aptitude. Any student who has
attained a 2.5 grade average in their senior year and a minimum SAT score of 900 will be welcome
to participate by submitting the enclosed form.
Entries shall be postmarked no later than April 1, 2017. Applications can be downloaded from
Naviance or picked up in Student Services.
LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA STUDENT OF THE YEAR
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is seeking motivated high school students in Maryland to
make a difference in the 2017 Student of the Year campaign. It is a fundraising campaign that runs
from Friday, February 3, 2017 to the Grand Finale Gala on Friday, March 24, 2017, during which
high school students raise awareness and funds to benefit LLS. The Student of the Year will re-
ceive a $2,500 college scholarship. Every candidate who reaches the minimum fundraising re-
quirement of $10,000 will receive a $1,000 scholarship. The application deadline is November 4,

HOBY (Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership) Programs State Leadership Seminar for Sophomore Students:
HOBY’s flagship program, the State Leadership Seminar, allows high school sophomores to recog-
nize their leadership talents and apply them in becoming effective, ethical leaders in their home, school,
workplace, and community.
Selected students would attend a three or four day seminar in March or June where they would partici-
pate in hands-on leadership activities, meet leaders in their state, and explore their own personal leader-
ship skills while learning how to lead others and make a positive impact in their community. Payment
and transportation will need to be provided by parents/guardians.
Any sophomore that exhibits one or more of the following traits should consider applying:
Outstanding oral and/or written communication skills
Critical and/or creative thinking
Creative problem solving
Strong decision-making skills
Sensitivity to the needs or concerns of others
Charismatic personality (others gravitate towards him or her)
Courage to speak out for one’s beliefs

JROTC Programs
Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) programs are offered at Atholton (Army), Howard
(Army) and Oakland Mills (Air Force) high schools. Each JROTC program provides an introduction to
career opportunities in the United States’ Armed Forces and teaches principles of leadership, discipline
and civic responsibility.
A student who wishes to participate in JROTC but does not attend one of the schools that offers the
program may apply for participation. Each school has a limited number of additional spaces available.
To apply for participation for the 2017-2018 school year, students must schedule an interview with
JROTC officials between November 29, 2016 through January 13, 2016. Only students who are inter-
viewed during this period will be considered for enrollment.
Students who are approved for admission into a JROTC program will be notified by letter by February
6, 2017, and must make a registration appointment with officials by February 17, 2017.
