CHAPEL CHIMES growing in faith...sharing God’s love NOVEMBER 2012 Ac dolor ac adipiscing amet bibendum, massa lacus molestie ut libero nec, diam et pharetra sodales eget vitae aliquet. November K ELLY S K ORNER GREETINGS CHAPEL FRIENDS! I am excited to introduce the Advent 2012 theme… SEASONING THE SEASON: “Bringing out the flavor of Christ in Christmas traditions” December 2, Advent Week One: “SEASON YOUR GREETINGS” “Greet others with expressions of God’s love.” Texts: St John 1:14 & Colossians 4:2-6 Theme: Incarnation of Christ “Happy holidays,” the grocery store clerk says blandly. You nod, then rush on. Not exactly a picture of Christmas cheer. But what is the theme of Christmas? “The Word became flesh.” Through traditions of card sending, entertaining, and caroling, as well as encounters with folks in crowded shopping areas or neighborhood streets, your actions and words should pass along the peace and goodwill Jesus brought with His birth. As God spoke love by becoming a man, you can speak love to others when your words and life are “full of grace, seasoned with salt.” December 9, Advent Week Two: The Christmas Cantata December 16, Advent Week Three: “SEASON YOUR GIVING” “Give with the generosity of Christ.” Text: II Corinthians 9:6-15 Theme: God’s Extravagant Love Surely, you’ve experienced it. Someone unexpectedly gives you a present, leaving you scrambling to find something to give the next time you meet. Did you know reluctant gift-giving was a problem in the early church, too? The apostle Paul had to remind the Corinthians to give of their money, time, and other resources, not from a feeling of obligation, but from their hearts. Giving becomes more appetizing when you remember God’s indescribable gift, Jesus, who modeled a lifestyle of generosity and self-sacrifice. If you take that seriously, you’ll give liberally and thankfully. December 23, Advent Week Four: “SEASON YOUR GATHERINGS” “Gather together with Jesus near.” Text: Colossians 3:1-17 Theme: God’s Grace Maybe for you, Christmas gatherings threaten to bring hurt feelings or disappointments. Perhaps you fear nothing will happen at all – you just won’t really make a connection with anyone. The letter to the Colossians contains a great recipe for the tradition of Christmas gatherings: Include compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forbearance and forgiveness. By putting these and other godly ingredients into the mix, your holiday get-togethers promise to be full of the sweetness of Christ. December 24, Christmas Eve: “SEASON YOUR GETTING” “Gratefully receive what you’re given.” Text: St Luke 1:26-38 and 2:1-7 Theme: Jesus as the Gift A gift you didn’t request. An unexpected visitor. A last-minute assignment. If so many folks are giving at Christmastime, that means just as many folks are getting – possibly reluctantly! As difficult as it may have been, Mary received God’s gift with gratitude and grace when she said, “Let it be unto me according to His will.” Likewise, if you accept every “gift” you encounter as something God intends or allows for your physical, mental, social, or spiritual benefit, whatever you get for Christmas will be full of taste. Get ready for this most meaningful time of the year!! Pastor Dean

CROP Walk

The annual CROP Walk was held October 7, meeting at Peace Church in Gladbrook and walking on the fitness trail north of Gladbrook. Gladbrook United Methodist provided the lunch. YF members thank the Chapel congregation for their strong support of ending hunger throughout the world. ChapelChurch gave $771.00 toward this effort. September UMW Minutes Chapel UMW met Thursday, September 6, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. at the church. The program opened with the singing of a new song reflecting the purpose of UMW, called “Unite, Unite, United Methodist Women.” Cindy Kr ul l led us in prayer and then introduced our Shepherdess, Joyce Bruene, who presented a program on Haiti. She began with a “60 Minutes” video “The Lost Children of Haiti.” She also informed us of the Global Orphan Project which attempts to document all the children that are gathered in orphanages throughout Haiti since the earthquake. She closed with another video about how rich we are here in America, and how that compares to other countries, especially Hai t i . She i s a member o f the Gladbrook UMW and they are raising money to send solar ovens to Haiti for the purpose of cooking food, as there is a shortage of charcoal. She closed with the reading of Matthew 25:40. President Susan Beichley called the meeting to order at 7:40 p.m. Thirteen members and two guests answered roll call by telling about a teacher they liked or disliked. The secretary’s minutes from the July meeting were read and appro ved . There wa s no correspondence. Carolyn presented the treasurer’s report in the absence of Shirley Svendsen. LCA Minutes The Ladies Cemetery Aid met Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at the church. President Kathryn Burt called the meeting to order at 1:30 p.m. Carolyn Kloster led devotions with a poem “Better, Wiser, and Happier” and closed with a poem “It Takes Just One Autumn Day.” Roll call was answered by eight members submitting a roll call idea. The minutes of the September meeting were read and approved. There was no correspondence. The treasurer’s report was given by Shirley Svendsen. Her report was accepted and placed on file for audit. We will contact the trustees on who should really decide what to do on this project. New Business: Our next meeting will be November 14, 2012, at 1:30 p.m. at the church. Jo Svendsen is the hostess, Connie Appelgate has devotions, and Vivian LeVier has entertainment. Roll call is a Thanksgiving verse. Election of officers will be held at that November meeting.
