Teresa Deaton will end a 34-year career with

the Preble County District Library when she

retires on November 30, 2015. Teresa has

worn many hats during her tenure with the

library. She began her career in 1981 as the

librarian at the Eldorado Library, where she

worked for 24 years. The library came alive

during her time there, sparked by her

creativity, love for the job, and can-do

attitude that her patrons loved. According to

an article that appeared in the Palladium-Item in 1988, the

children affectionately called Teresa “The Library Lady.” She

planned many fun programs, helped students with

assignments, lent a listening ear to those who wished to talk,

and kept the ties between the library and the community

strong.

Teresa was asked to take over the position of Children’s

Librarian due to the retirement of Dana Kesling. This meant

she would be working from the Eaton Library, and would

have to give up her position as Eldorado’s Branch Librarian.

Teresa accepted the job (after taking some required courses),

stepping into the role as Children’s Librarian in 2005.

Children’s programming has grown and flourished under

Teresa’s steady hand. She introduced a lap-sit program for

infants and toddlers called Mother Goose Storytime. The

program exposes very small children to reading and music

and small crafts. Mother Goose Storytime allowed Teresa to

bond with the children, inspiring them to love reading and

learning. She introduced Family Fun Night – programs

designed to promote family togetherness through special

events such as professional puppet plays and themed

programs like Willie Wonka, Harry Potter, and Disney. Teresa

has played so many characters over the years from books like

The Monster Who Eats Books, The Boy Who Didn’t Cut His

Hair, The Cat in the Hat, Alien Stone Soup, Super Read Riding

Hood, and The Case of the Disappearing Books.

She has coordinated parade float-making, yearly Lego

Contests, Night Out with Daddy holiday programs (which so

many parents and kids enjoy), the annual Summer Reading

Program, and participated in many community events. She

was a frequent visitor to Eaton area daycares – and still

remarks on how those visits brightened her day. She

oversaw the LAPP Bag Program (which provides books to

local daycare facilities) and the Book Stamp Program (which

gives a free book to a child when they have finished reading a

certain amount of library books). She was also responsible for

collection development for the children’s department,

purchasing all of the books, magazines, movies, and

electronic media that keep children (and parents) coming

back for more.

As if she didn’t wear enough hats already, in 2010, Teresa

was also given the duties of Eaton Branch Manager, a

position she handled with great problem solving skills. She

was responsible for making sure the Eaton Library ran

smoothly and that all issues – great or small – were dealt with

in a timely manner.

In 2014 and most of 2015, Teresa took on the position of

Interim Director when the need arose, meeting the challenge

with her usual strength and determination to succeed. Under

her leadership, the library stayed strong and day-to-day

operations ran smoothly.

Everyone at PCDL would like to wish Teresa the very best as

she begins a new and exciting journey in her life. She will

undoubtedly be as successful at retirement as she has been

as Eldorado's Branch Librarian, Children's Librarian, Branch

Manager of the Eaton Library, and (for a while) as Interim

Director!

She has been a strong leader, an awesome advocate for her

staff, and a loyal friend. She inspires those around her with

her creativity, love for the job, and can-do attitude -- all

characteristics of a great leader.

2015 also saw Teresa take on an illness that would have

sidelined most. Not her. She fought the battle like a warrior

and won the war with a hero's grace.

She is admired; she is loved; she will be missed. May her new

journey be guided by joy, filled with laughter, and brightened

by days spent with family and friends.

PC Room Supervisor, Marlene Ressler, is researching Eaton founder William Bruce and his descendants. So far, she has finished histories for three of his children—Charles Bruce and his wife Eliza Leas (Lease) Bruce; Hardin Bruce and his two wives Jane Cook Bruce and Susannah Swihart Bruce; and Catherine “Kate” Bruce Brouse who married George Brouse. Interestingly enough, of the seven children born to Hardin and Eliza Bruce, only 1 lived to adulthood. Marlene is hard at work on the history of William Bruce and it will be completed soon.

These family history books (and many more) are available to researchers in the Preble County Room.

My Name is Lucy Barton / Elizabeth Strout:

A new book by Pulitzer Prize winner

Elizabeth Strout is cause for celebration.

Her bestselling novels, including Olive

Kitteridge and The Burgess Boys, have

illuminated our most tender relationships.

Now, in My Name Is Lucy Barton, this

extraordinary writer shows how a simple

hospital visit becomes a portal to the most

tender relationship of all—the one

between mother and daughter.

Lucy Barton is recovering slowly from what should have been a

simple operation. Her mother, to whom she hasn’t spoken for

many years, comes to see her. Gentle gossip about people from

Lucy’s childhood in Amgash, Illinois, seems to reconnect them,

but just below the surface lie the tension and longing that have

informed every aspect of Lucy’s life: her escape from her

troubled family, her desire to become a writer, her marriage, her

love for her two daughters. Knitting this powerful narrative

together is the brilliant storytelling voice of Lucy herself: keenly

observant, deeply human, and truly unforgettable. 1/16

The Flood Girls / Richard Fifield: Welcome to Quinn, Montana, population: 956. A town where nearly all of the volunteer firemen are named Jim, where The Dirty Shame—the only bar in town—refuses to serve mixed drinks (too much work), where the locals hate the newcomers (then again, they hate the locals, too), and where the town softball team has never even come close to having a winning season. Until now.

Rachel Flood has snuck back into town after leaving behind a trail of chaos nine years prior. She’s here to make amends, but nobody wants to hear it, especially her mother, Laverna. But with the help of a local boy named Jake and a little soul-searching, she just might make things right. 2/16

About the Authors

R ichard Fifield earned his MFA from Sarah Lawrence College

in upstate New York. For the past twenty years he has worked as

a social worker for adults with intellectual disabilities, while

volunteering as a creative writing teacher in Missoula, Montana.

E lizabeth Strout won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for Olive

Kitteridge, a collection of connected short stories about a

woman and her immediate family and friends on the coast of

Maine.

Be Frank With Me / Julia Claiborne Johnson: Reclusive literary legend M. M. “Mimi” Banning has been holed up in her Bel Air mansion for years. But after falling prey to a Bernie Madoff-style ponzi scheme, she’s flat broke. Now Mimi must write a new book for the first time in decades, and to ensure the

timely delivery of her manuscript, her New York publisher sends an assistant to monitor her progress. When Alice Whitley arrives at the Banning mansion, she’s put to work right away—as a full-time companion to Frank, the writer’s eccentric nine-year-old, a boy with the wit of Noel Coward, the wardrobe of a 1930s movie star, and very little in common with his fellow fourth-graders. As she slowly gets to know Frank, Alice becomes consumed with finding out who Frank’s father is, how his gorgeous “piano teacher and itinerant male role model” Xander fits into the Banning family equation—and whether Mimi will ever finish that book. FYI: Materials published in November and December will become available for patrons in January.

Maybe working as head waitress at Milagro—her aunt and uncle’s Tex-Mex restaurant—isn’t exactly living the dream, but it is a fresh start. And business is booming as tourists pour into Broken Boot for its famous Wild West Festival. But when a local jewelry designer is found strangled outside Milagro after a tamale-making party, Josie’s reporter instincts kick in. As suspects pile up and alibis crack faster than taco shells, Josie needs to wrap up this case tighter than her tía’s tortillas—before another victim calls for the check…

Postmistress Mysteries by Jean Flowers Death Takes Priority: Leaving behind her managerial position in the Boston main postal office, Cassie trades in her tailored suits and high heels for the comfortable blue shirt and red, white, and blue striped scarf of the Postmaster for North Ashcot, Massachusetts. Everything is business as usual until Cassie arrives at work one day to find that someone has broken into the post office building. The only items stolen: stacks of telephone books. Who steals phone books? Two days later, the body of an unidentified man is found in the woods. When the handsome antiques dealer she just had lunch with is taken into custody, Cassie is suddenly drawn into the case.

Tangled Web Mysteries by Sadie Hartwell Yarned and Dangerous: Time has not been kind to sleepy Dorset Falls, Connecticut, where an erstwhile resident is hoping to bring a tattered yarn shop back to life—but with a murderer on the loose, the whole town is in knots…

Brewing Trouble Mysteries by Joyce Tremel To Brew or Not to Brew: The Allegheny Brew House is a dream come true for Maxine “Max” O’Hara, who went all the way to Germany for her brewmaster certification, and is now preparing to open her own craft brew pub in a newly revitalized section of Pittsburgh. But before she can start pouring stouts and lagers to thirsty throngs, there’s trouble on tap. Suspicious acts of sabotage culminate in Max finding her assistant brewmaster and chef Kurt Schmidt strangled in one of the vats. Between rescuing a stray gray tabby she names Hops and considering a handsome ex-hockey player as her new chef, Max doesn’t have a lot of time to solve a murder. But with a homicide detective for a dad, she comes to criminal investigation naturally. And if someone is desperate enough to kill to stop her from opening, Max needs to act fast—before her brand-new brew biz totally tanks...

Liv and Di in Dixie Mysteries by Vickie Fee Death Crashes the Party: In the quirky, close-knit town of Dixie, Tennessee, party planner Liv McKay has a knack for throwing Southern-style soirées, from diamonds-and-denim to black tie affairs, and her best friend Di Souther mixes a mean daiquiri. Jump the Gun / Zoe Burke: Meet

Annabelle Starkey. Shrewd, sweet,

and sexy. A Stephanie Plum without

the Jersey girl attitude, plus she’s a

one-man kind of girl. Loves hats and

shoes—notices them in odd

situations. Can see when she might

need to shoot to kill.

Annabelle Starkey also loves movies. Why does her

own life never match up to her favorite Silver-

Screen scenarios? One day, by chance, she meets

the charming but slightly mysterious and definitely

magnetic Mickey Paxton at a book convention and

decides it’s time to live one of those Cary Grant films

and accept Mickey’s invitation to fly to Las Vegas for

a holiday. Not so much a hook-up as a test flight for

romance.

The script takes a surprise turn when they arrive in

Sin City and danger knocks. Suddenly Annabelle and

Mickey are on the run—from what? And why? Did

Mickey lead Annabelle into this mess? Then the

brutal murder of Annabelle’s BFF in Annabelle’s San

Francisco apartment sends the couple winging west

to that city where, once again, criminals and cops

pursue them.

In two frenetic days of fast driving, fast talking, and

fast thinking, Annabelle discovers several truths by

learning to trust her own instincts. And the

significance of an antique hat pin.

The next book in the series comes out in January,

2016. The title is No Gun Intended.

Anne Tyler’s Vinegar Girl Coming in June Vinegar Girl is the second book in the Hogarth* Shakespeare series, a

major global initiative that the Guardian (a British national daily

newspaper) calls "The great rewriting project of the 21st century."

Vinegar Girl: Anne Tyler's delightful Vinegar

Girl features Kate, a socially awkward young

woman, adored by the preschool children she

teaches but misunderstood by her peers. Her

father is a scientific genius, but not so great on

emotions. About to lose his (equally genius,

equally socially inept) research assistant, Pyotr

Cherbakov, because of visa problems, and

desperate to save the project that is his life's

work, he comes up with a plan: Kate will marry

Pyotr who will then be able to stay in the country and finish the

project. The plan sounds perfect, except for one small hitch: Kate.

eleven book series, Pennyroyal Green, by Julie Anne Long.

The eleventh (and final) book in the series came out in

September! However, you will want to read the first ten

books in series order. (See side bar on the left.)

The Legend of Lyon Redmond: Bound by

centuries of bad blood, England's two

most powerful families maintain a veneer

of civility . . . until the heir to the

staggering Redmond fortune disappears,

reviving rumors of an ancient curse: a

Redmond and an Eversea are destined to

fall disastrously in love once per

generation.

An Enduring Legend

Rumor has it she broke Lyon Redmond's heart. But while many

a man has since wooed the dazzling Olivia Eversea, none has

ever won her—which is why jaws drop when she suddenly

accepts a viscount's proposal. Now London waits with bated

breath for the wedding of a decade . . . and wagers on the

return of an heir.

An Eternal Love

It was instant and irresistible, forbidden . . . and unforgettable.

And Lyon—now a driven, dangerous, infinitely devastating

man—decides it's time for a reckoning. As the day of her

wedding races toward them, Lyon and Olivia will decide

whether their love is a curse destined to tear their families

apart . . . or the stuff of which legends are made.

Amish Palooza Mary’s Christmas Goodbye / Linda Byler: Mary Stoltzfus is thirty years old, splashed with freckles, and unmarried. In her Amish world, that qualifies her to be called an old maid. She is living her quiet schoolteacher life in the Lancaster County Amish community when she gets a surprising invitation in the mail one day. Would she come to Montana to teach?

She arrives at a desolate station and meets Arthur Bontrager, who had signed the invitation and has come to introduce her to Beaver Creek School, dirt roads, and the fancy shed where she would live. When she settles into this world of mountain ranges and pine-tree majesty, her old buried questions—about why no man had ever been her match—have come along to live with her. After she’s injured by wild dogs on her walk home from school, Mary faces new questions. Is she weak if she accepts a Bouvier des Flandres dog from Arthur’s friend? Who is the young woman in the photo at Arthur’s house? And why does she suddenly care? Does she really belong back in Lancaster?

Secret Sister: An Amish Christmas Tale / Sarah Price: After years of giving of herself to her family and community, Grace Beiler, an elderly Amish woman, faces her first Christmas since losing her husband of fifty years to his battle with cancer. With her children grown and moved onto different communities, Grace is feeling more than a little depressed.

She begins to reflect upon her own life and wonder if she has properly fulfilled her promise to be a servant of God. As Christmas draws near and her depression becomes stronger, she starts receiving little gifts in the mail and left on her doorstep. She realizes that she has a "secret sister," but has no idea who it might be, for each gift seems to relate to a different event in her life. Each gift causes her to reflect and remember important moments. Just when she thinks she might have figured out who the secret sister is, a new gift arrives with a different meaning.

An Amish Christmas Gift / Amy Clipston, Ruth Reid, and Kelly Irvan: This anthology contains three Christmas-inspired novellas: Naomi’s Gift by Amy Clipston, An Unexpected Joy by Ruth Reid, and A Christmas Visitor by Kelly Irvin.

Beyond Books

Keep Moving: And Other Tips and Truths

About Aging / Dick Van Dyke: Show-

business legend Dick Van Dyke is living

proof that life does get better the longer

you live it. Who better to offer

instruction, advice, and humor than

someone who’s entering his ninth decade

with a jaunty two-step? Van Dyke isn’t just a born song-

and-dance man; his irrepressible belief in embracing the

moment and unleashing his inner child has proved to be

the ultimate elixir of youth. When he was injured during

the filming of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, his doctor warned

him he’d be using a walker within seven years, but Dick

performed a soft shoe right there and never looked back.

Whether he’s describing the pleasure he takes in his

habitual visits to the grocery store; how he met his late-in

-life-love Arlene; or how he sprung back, livelier than

ever, from a near-death experience, Dick’s optimistic

outlook is an invigorating tonic for anyone who needs a

reminder that life should be lived with enthusiasm

despite what the calendar says.

Holly George-Warren offers the first serious

biography of this singular individual, in a

fascinating narrative that traces Autry's

climb from small-town farm boy to

House of the Rising Sun / James Lee Burke: New York Times

bestseller James Lee Burke returns with his latest masterpiece, the

story of a father and son separated by war and circumstance—and

whose encounter with the legendary Holy Grail will change their

lives forever.

From its opening scene in revolutionary Mexico to the Battle of

the Marne in 1918, and on to the bordellos and saloons of San

Antonio during the reign of the Hole in the Wall Gang, House of

the Rising Sun is an epic tale of love, loss, betrayal, vengeance,

and retribution that follows Texas Ranger Hackberry Holland on

his journey to reunite with his estranged son, Ishmael, a captain in

the United States Army. 12/15

Crimson Shore / Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child: A secret

chamber. A mysterious shipwreck. A murder in the desolate salt

marshes. A seemingly straightforward private case turns out to be

much more complicated (and sinister) than Special Agent A.X.L.

Pendergast ever could have anticipated. 11/15

Ashley Bell / Dean Koontz: Bibi Blair is a fierce, funny, dauntless

young woman—whose doctor says she has one year to live. She

replies, “We’ll see.” Her sudden recovery astonishes medical

science.

An enigmatic woman convinces Bibi that she escaped death so

that she can save someone else. Someone named Ashley Bell. But

save her from what, from whom? And who is Ashley Bell?

Where is she? Bibi’s obsession with finding Ashley sends her on the run from

threats both mystical and worldly, including a rich and charismatic

cult leader with terrifying ambitions. 12/15

The Wild West of Louis L’Amour / Tim

Champlin: Author Tim Champlin (himself a

writer of Western historical fiction) uncovers

all of the secrets of L'Amour's themes and

characters - geography of the West, lone

heroes, gunfighters, mining and ranching,

women, Native Americans, food, and

transportation. The frontier regions, towns,

and events that featured in L'Amour's writing, as well as the real

folks on whom his characters were based, come to life through

thoroughly researched illustrations. The collection of more than 200

images includes maps, period photos and daguerreotypes, period

illustrations, paintings of the regions discussed, modern

photography of towns and countryside, and cover art from

L'Amour's books and the pulp magazines in which he was published

before he became a best-selling author.

For the true L'Amour fan, The Wild West of Louis L'Amour is also a

complete history of his colorful early life as a cowboy, lumberjack,

longshoreman, prizefighter, merchant seaman, and army officer.

No L'Amour fan will want to skip this comprehensive, beautiful look

at the writer, the man, and the world in which he set his tales.

The First Celebrity Serial Killer in Southwest

Ohio / Richard O. Jones: Just before Christmas

1902, Alfred Knapp strangled his wife in her

sleep. He put her body in a box and sent the box

floating down the Great Miami River, telling

everyone that Hannah had left him. When the

truth came out, Knapp confessed to four other

murders. Newspapers across the Midwest sent

reporters to interview the handsome strangler. Despite spending

most of his adulthood in prison, he had a charming, boyish

manner that made him an instant celebrity serial killer. True crime

historian Richard O Jones examines the strangler's alleged crimes,

the family drama of covering up Knapp's atrocities and how a

brain-damaged drifter became a media darling.

Never Broken: Songs are Only Half the Story /

Jewel: New York Times bestselling poet and

multi-platinum singer-songwriter Jewel explores

professional team, skillful and colorful players

have worn the Cincinnati uniform.

The Chase: How Ohio State Captured the First

College Football Playoff / Bill Rabinowitz: This

inside look at an unprecedented season follows

Playoff and the national championship.

Three and Out: Rich Rodriguez and the Michigan

Wolverines in the Crucible of College Football /

John U. Bacon: Three and Out tells the story of

how college football's most influential coach, Rich

Rodriguez, took over the nation's most successful

program, only to produce three of the worst

seasons in the University of Michigan's celebrated

history. Coach Rich Rodriguez granted author and journalist John

U. Bacon unrestricted access to the Michigan Wolverines'

program. Nothing and no one was off-limits. John U. Bacon's

Three and Out is the definitive account of a football marriage

seemingly made in heaven that broke up after just three years,

and exposes the best and the worst of college football.
