Just in time for Thanksgiving and the Holidays! Join us as Carlton Knight, Event Planner Extraordinaire, talks about planning the perfect event; from the flowers and decorations to the fabulous menu.
An independent Event Planner, Carlton Knight was the man behind some of the most elegant and talked about events at the Hillcrest Country Club and The Beverly Hilton.
(Judging by Carlton Knight)
Join the competition at the Fall Follies Luncheon! It’s fun, it’s creative, it’s tabletops! Do a table setting and a centerpiece using your dishes and your imagination. The Club will supply a card table for your setting, you do the rest.
Please e-mail the office at [email protected] to reserve a card table by
November 6th. Table top setup is from 9:00am - 11:00am on Nov. 10th.
A plaque will be presented to the BHWC by The Salvation Army, in recognition of the funds that were raised over the summer for the Backpack and School Supplies Drive.

Council and to hear about the new program we are
supporting in partnership with UCLA Mattel Children's
Hospital (MCH). Working along with Mattel's Parent
Council, we plan to fill and distribute Bereavement Support

Thanks to the generous support of our members, we have
purchased all the MCH-approved supplies for 120 parent
and sibling bags.
Please join us at the BHWC on Saturday, November 14 at
10:00 A.M. to assemble the Bereavement Support Bags for

The Housekeeper's Tale
The Women Who Really Ran the English Country House
Working as a housekeeper was one of the most
prestigious jobs a 19th - and early - 20th century
woman could want, but also one of the toughest.
A far cry from the fictional Downton Abbey, the real life Mrs.
Hughes was up against capricious mistresses, poor pay, no job
security and grueling physical labor. The housekeeper of an
English country house might manage 100 servants and a domestic
budget on par with a small bank, and her wages might outstrip
both cook and butler. She was trusted with the family’s most
intimate secrets but was entirely at the mercy of her mistress.
However, for all her importance, this most senior of upper servants
has been largely invisible throughout history. Delving into secret
diaries, unpublished letters and the neglected service archives of
English stately homes, social historian Tessa Boase has dug deep to
reconstruct the lives of six women in gripping and often poignant
detail, from the 1830s right up to the present day.
Her lecture will illustrate the personal sacrifices and driving
ambition that shaped these women’s lives as well as the surprising
scandals that brought their careers to an abrupt end - an unwanted
pregnancy, a forbidden love affair and a prison sentence for
starters.
Tessa Boase’s heroines include the elderly Victorian housekeeper,
Sarah Wells at Uppark, and Edwardian beauty Ellen Penketh at
Erddig, both National Trust properties. This is the true often
shocking story of below stairs in the English country house.
A Word About the Author
Journalist and author Tessa Boase read English
at Oxford University, Lincoln College, and has
worked as a voiceover artist, a children’s
scriptwriter, and a commissioning editor for
The Daily, Sunday Telegraph and The Daily
Mail.
As a freelance feature writer, she contributes to a wide range of
national newspapers and magazines. She has been a judge on
both the Thomas Cook Travel Book award and the Guild of Food
Writers Critic of the Year award.

Art Talk: Collecting Art & Antiques

Have you ever wished you were more knowledgeable
about fine art and antiques? Whether you are shopping

If you are not interested in collecting, your appreciation
and understanding will be enhanced after this class. The
dictionary lists a collector as one who accumulates; a
connoisseur as one who, through acquired expert
knowledge, discriminates.
