JAMSHEDPUR JESUITS02 November,2015
The classes are in full swing at the
Jesuit School of Theology, Berkeley.
Besides the cultural shock, it is
academically shocking as well. It
really takes time to get acquainted
with the American accent. We are
in the world of books and even our life is mostly
confined to the library. We have found a way out
of the hassle, by forming like-minded study group.
Life is hard-hitting indeed, more than we thought
it would be. It does not end here; the reading
week starts from 23 October for a week. Sch.
Neelam will be spending sometime
in Bon Lemon the Jesuit Villa house
near Santa Cruz; while, Sch. Amit
has some other constructive plan
for this study break.

SARVA MILAN was held for all the
college students of the Steel City on nd2 October, Gandhi Jayanti, in Saint
Joseph's Block of Loyola School, to
commemorate and pay tribute to
the Father of the Nation. We
organized a speech contest on the
sttopic: The Relevance of Gandhiji in the 21
Century. The contestants could deliver their
speech in Hindi or in English. A girl, Nitika, of XITE
College, Gamaria, won the gold medal for the best
speaker. Fr. Ozzie Mascarenhas spoke at the
SARVA MILAN and in his speech he highlighted the
relevance of Gandhiji in the 21st Century. SARVA
MILAN creates a platform to
connect college students of the city
and orients them towards social
harmony.

After being laid low by malaria Fr.
Vinod found the right occasion to
bring a little cheer into his life by
celebrating his birthday on 27
September, both in the community . as well as in the school on 29 The
community had the privilege of
hosting three retreatants: Frs.
James Santhanam, Sushil Ekka,
and Shantinandan Mundu, who
spent 8 days in recharging their
spiritual batteries. On declaring
Puja Vacation, Fr. Victor went to
Jamshedpur for dental care and Fr.
Sushil went to see his mother who
had undergone a cataract operation. Besides
guarding the Bhuli fort, Vinod extended spiritual
support to the AC sisters for their daily Mass as the
Parish Priest was away in Jamshedpur for his
annual retreat. The preparation for a mega annual
sports day on 21 November is in full swing. Three
of our girl students as well as seven students from
Sijua are selected to join the National Level
Basketball Tournament that will be held at
Ahmadabad at the end of this month.
thThe 19 ASISC Regional Athletic Meet - 2015 was
well organized by the Principal, Mr. G Thomas

The painting work is on and our De
Nobili is getting a face lift for the
Diamond Jubilee. The dilapidated
garage is being demolished and the
basement is going through spring cleaning.
Accumulated junk over the years has been sold to
the 'kabaadiwallas". The old Jesuit rooms have
been converted into a spacious Staff Room and a
Senior Computer Lab. The work for
the New Plus Two block has also
begun. The plan was conceived
during Fr. Eric Cassel's time in the
DNC, Digwadih Pius FernandesVeterans’ Dreams – Seeing the Light
early 80's, Fr. Victor Misquith had
the blue print done in early 90's and
now it's finally seeing the light of
day. This will help us to cope with
the increasing number of children
and will solve the age old problem
of insufficient and foul smelling
toilets.
“Problems never end, and we are
always in fire fighting mode” says Fr.
Gerry Ravi, our Administrator.
Latest show cause notice from Asst.

the new building cess, needs to be

this is just an old trick in new

Fr. Augustine Ezha along with a bus

visited the Missionaries of Charity
in Barwadda and donated sacks of
rice, dal, soaps and toothpaste,
collected from our children as the

Red tape and greasing the palm is
causing the delay. Recently our
ndchildren won the 2 Prize in the Science Exhibition
organized by CFRI on "Soil Conservation." Interact
Club of English School distributed copy books and
writing materials to our children. “I am grateful to
them” reports Headmaster Fr. Tony Bara.
The Jesuit Residence used to be plagued with
overloading at the switch board due to faulty
wiring. Minister Fr. Shantinandan has found a
permanent solution by fixing a three phase line.
This should give respite to all, especially in
summer.
Fr. Pius spent the Puja Vacation, teaching the
Novices the basics of Psycho- Spirituality at
Mango. He also had an ulterior motive, i.e. to
have a few check-ups done from old Doctor
friends. The prognosis: he is as fit as a fiddle for his
age!
Diamond Jubilee practices have begun. Children
are showcasing the all-time hit Rock Opera
"Joseph's Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat”. All
Jesuits are cordially invited for the celebrations –
Hence, FREEZE Saturday 19 December in your
calendar. Early birds will get the best rooms.
Please inform Fr. Shantinandan, our Guest
Master, in advance.
Teachers' Day was celebrated joyfully by our
students who beautifully expressed their
gratitude to their teachers through colourful
programmes as well as by presenting them
with lovely cards and flowers. They also
reminded them of the responsibility of a
teacher by enacting a skit on the life of a great
legend Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam that made him
come alive. The school hosted a sumptuous
meal to end the festive spirit of the occasion. A
mosquito bite laid Fr. Vinod low
with malaria and denied him the
pleasure of taking part in these
activities that helped to create
bonds between teachers and
students.
Our Junior Girls' Basketball
Team came out champions in the
Bokaro-Dhanbad ICSE School
and the Boys' Team secured third
place in the Tournament. The
champions will go to Ranchi to
participate in the ASISC level
basketball tournament. Ms.
Diyashi, a student of Class V,
secured the Runners-Up Trophy
in the ASISC Badmin ton
Tournament a t the Bihar-
Jharkhand level . She will
compete at the National Level in
Bangalore. Kudos to all our DNS
Bhuli budding sports persons
and best wishes to all!
We also organized the Art &
Craft Exhibition for the students
of Standards IV to IX. Parents
and the Staff were highly
impressed by the creative
exposition of children's talents in
the form of art and craft. The
building work of the magnificent
Senior School section is in full
swing and it is assured that it will
be ready by the end of January
2016.

the Puja Vacation, Fr. George CL
was moved to make his annual

the former Superior and Financial

this was home for him and familiar
territory where, during his tenure,
he had the domestic chapel re-
structured to make it spacious,
giving it the right ambience for

vast number of fruit trees that now have the
parrots chirping with delight. Fr Hilary Lobo,
stayed on for nearly a month enjoying “the milk of
human kindness by the quart in every vein” that
flowed from Bro Maxi.
Two birthday celebrations caught the eye – that of
Chacha (Fr Manu Parappuram) as he turned 85
while there was the one of the Provincial, Fr
George Fernandes, when City Jesuits and Clergy
gathered to greet George as he touched
“shastipurti” and entered the ranks of Senior
Citizen.
After a 3-month stay in the US, as PDD (to contact
friends and raise funds) Fr Walter
Kongari was back in Jamshedpur on
15 October. It took him a week to
settle down, moving his PDD Office
to the block which Fr James Bara
occupied during his 4-year stay in
Loyola Niwas as Minister. Before we
could close out the month of
October, Wally is on road to inspect

tribe increase” (Abou Ben Adhem).
Final ly, we made it! On 2nd
October, 2015, both B ishop
Karikassery and I took the bus going
from Amritsar to Lahore at 9.a.m.
We were the only two passengers in
the big bus of Punjab Roadways,
with two security men inside the
bus and a jeep with six armed police
men in the front, taking us to
Pakistan: what an honour!
We received warm and rousing
welcome with lot of garlands and
rose petals thrown on us. Thanks to
Apostolic Carmel Sisters for being
the instrumental to start the 'Peace
Mission' in Pakistan. They have a
strong presence in Pakistan and run
five schools in Lahore.
It was a Biblical journey too that we
were able to step in Taxela where St.
Thomas, the Apostle reached in 40
A.D. The place has been marked
with a simple two feet wall on
which the devotees light candles as
a mark of their homage to St
Thomas. Sitting on a small stone
under a tree, Bishop Karikassery
offered Holy Mass there and I
concelebrated with the Bishop,
which in itself was a unique
experience. It was a moment of
special grace 'uniting' Kodungallore
with Taxela!!! Kodungallore is the
ancient port in Kerala, India, where
St.Thomas reached in 52 A.D.
To mark our respect, we met Bishop Rufin
Anthony, the Bishop of Islamabad-Rawalpindi
Diocese. He was delighted to know about our
'Peace Mission' and requested us to start this
mission in his Diocese, promising his full support
to it. After visiting the ruins of the ancient Budhist
University, apparently the first University in the
world - the ancient Taxela University – and the
museum, with a sense of fulfillment and joy, we
proceeded to Lahore about 6+ hours' drive from
Rawalpindi.
We visited St. Anthony's High School, Lahore,
where over 1500 senior students welcomed both
of us with great enthusiasm. Thereafter, we had to
hasten to meet Archbishop Sebastian Francis
Shaw OFM, the Archbishop of Lahore. The
Archbishop expressed his enthusiasm to start in
his Archdiocese, the 'Association of People
Praying for Peace' (APPP) which Bishop
Karikassery had initiated in his Kottapuram
Diocese. It was another moment of 'grace' and an
opportunity for uniting the Archdiocese of Lahore
with the diocese of Kottapuram.
Tuesday, 6th October was reserved for
Gujjranwala. Over 400 senior students - greater
majority of them, Christians – honoured us with A
'two-hour long meaningful programme. The
students were informed that the letters from India
were given to the Principal which they could take
later and that they could write replies to the
letters which could be given to me the following
month when I plan to visit them. However, the
impatient zeal and enthusiasm of the students did
not allow them to wait for a month.
To my pleasant surprise, the
students wrote 48 very inspiring
letters within 15 minutes and gave
t h e m to m e . I a d m i re d t h e
spontaneous creativity of the
students, putting the simple letters
in the envelopes along with
Pakistani currency notes and coins,
was amazing! It also showed how
anxiously those students long for
peace! It was a very moving
gesture! In the Sessions Court of
Gujjranwala over 15 Lawyers
gathered for a meeting of the
'Lawyers for Peace' at 3.00 p.m. It
was a pleasant surprise for Bishop
Karikassery to see so many lawyers
taking active interest in the 'Peace
M o v e m e n t ' . T h e L a w y e r s
appreciated the work of the 'Peace
Mission' and promised their full
support to it. Bishop Karikassery
promised to invite the Archbishop
and also to facilitate the process for
procuring a Visa for the Archbishop.
It turned out to be a 'working
dinner' on 'Building Peace'.

to Fr Bene Soreng for giving them a
platform from which to cherish the vision and
mission of our ministries. We were blessed and
surprised with the sudden visit of POSA, ADF and

Jesu Bhavan – Mango R. Anthony Raj Seven Habits of Effective Religious
The month began with the monthly
recollection on October 2 on the
theme, 'The Seven Habits of Highly
Effective Religious' and on the same
day we consecrated our community
to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Also, in
this month novices witnessed
several other life enhancing events
like, celebration of Navakhani and
Karam Milan 2015 at Cathedral,
Special Rosary on the feast day of
our Lady of Rosary, listening and
learning about Assam Mission from Fr Ajay Tirkey,
who was recuperating from after having been thattacked by thieves on 9 July and finally, the icing
on the cake, was by Fr. Pius Fernandes - a week
long course on personality development. Finally,
for a change of pace, they were fortunate to
witness the reception of the Sacrament of
Confirmation of 68 children in our St. Anthony's
Church, Kutku Dungri, Mango. These events have
made significant contribution in broadening the
horizon of our novices and forming themselves for
the greater mission. Some of us took time to move
out on for various engagements. Fr
Master, R. Anthonyraj, was away in
Delhi attending JIGSA Coordinators'
Meet – 2015, Fr James Kalapura
was in Gorakhpur preaching a
retreat to religious, Fr Fabian
Bhuinyan was in Assam preaching a

preached an 8 days retreat to
religious men and women here in

kept us all busy with great events. Fr
John Deeney Inter Class Football
Tournament began on 30 August
and went up to 8 October. It was a
long stretched out tournament
where all the players demonstrated
sportive spirit. Besides displaying
their sportive skills, the High School
students got to know the results of
their First Terminal Exam and
Intermediate students on their Unit
Tests. Br. Pascal went to Lohardaga to pay his final
respects to his sister- in-law who was ailing for a
long time. Hostellers tightened their belts for the
long awaited Hostel Day, which began from 29
September, with the great finale on 11 October
that was replete with stage programmes. Kolhan
Inter Jesuit Football Tournament was arranged
from 9 – 11 October in which the boys from Chaira
and the girls from Lupungutu girls lifted the
Championship Trophy. Fr. Felix Tellis went to LCE,
Jilling, and Chiara as Province Revisor. During
Durga Puja holidays, Fr. Oscar Horo went to visit

Month of September and October
was a grace of joy and happiness for
a l l o f u s i n P r e m a l J y o t i ,
Ahmedabad. On 19 Oct. Fr. K.M.
Joseph (PCF) came to Ahmadabad
for his visitation. We shared the
desolation and consolation of our
own personal life. After listening to
our sharing he strongly suggested
us to grow in intellectual dimension
and community life. On 21 Oct, nine
of us went to The Shrine of
Unteshwari Mata in South Gujarat.
The whole mission of South Gujarat was started by
the Jesuit Fathers and Fr. Diaz is one of them and
still continues to work with the people of South
Gujarat. He is one of the most important person
and known as Bapu in South Gujarat. The shrine of
Unteshwari Mata has become an important place
where all the Catholics and people of other faith
come for a Dharshan. This was our first experience
of seeing a Catholic Church fully enshrined in the
culture of the place. On 29 October Fr. George
Fernandes, Provincial came to Ahmedabad for his
visitation and spent some time listening to our
experiences in Premal Jyoti, Ahmedabad. After
listening to our sharing he gave us some inputs
which were very challenging and encouraging. On
30 October he went to Hilnagar to
meet his novitiate companion Fr.
Cedric Prakash. He also met Fr.
Herry, the Director of Pre-Novitiate,
and Fr. Alpesh, the PCF of Gujarat
province. It was a remarkable thexperience for us. On 30 night he
left for Mumbai. From 28 October
we started our internal exams,
which go on till 7 November. Soon
after the internal exam we have
Gujarat university exam starting
from 17 November.

local community has started feeling
the pain on our decision to close
down the high school section.
People have started organizing
meetings in four panchayats and come out with
various suggestions and requests for reopening
the High School.
Our students, both girls and boys, participated in
Inter Jesuit School football tournament and came
back with a lot of learning for the future. Deacon
Ranjit is busy with his diaconate ministry as well as
in giving recollections and retreats to young boys
and girls. Fr. Romanus has been suffering from
sinus and medicines make no difference. He is in
Jamshedpur to get the r ight
treatment and get on with the
mission. Ho Mahasabha is actively
hand in glove with rel igious
fundamentalist and it is a testing
time for Christians in the area. We
continue our pastoral work in all the
v i l lages and accompany our
families and help them to stay
united.

of all Jesuit Schools across the spectrum. He also
chaired and anchored a panel discussion on the
theme: “On Being Messenger of Peace”.thOn 17 evening, Tony moved up to St. Joseph's
School, North Point, and Darjeeling to make his

However, erratic monsoon has caused a thinning down of the water flow, thereby giving rise to the 'Third World War' like situation among farmers. “A Borso Pani Pai Besi Critical” (Situation for water is very critical) sighs Mr. Saninga, our gardener.
Both the parish priests, n a m e l y F r s . R o m a n u s Kerketta and Henry Albert, introduced spiritual renewal p r o g r a m s f o r t h e parishioners. Along with the catechist and team members, they go to a particular village every Friday to conduct this program. On receiving poor
hospitality from the villagers, one of the village catechists was reluctant to accompany the team. Sensing his attitude, the head catechist admonished him saying, “Who are you to ask for meals; even priests go back home hungry”. Sr. Dominica Kujur has brought in fresh air among the youth and once again is ready for organizing youth programs at the sub-centre, Bandiguda.

In order to make up for the heavy loss of rice cultivation, many farmers are now gearing up for vegetable cultivation with their newly purchased water pumps at subsidized rates.
Vidyajyoti Amos BageThe Khatha – Mitha of Life
The months of September and
October witnessed both “khatta
-mitta” experiences in Vidya
Jyoti . In the beginning of
September Fr. MikeT Raj went
to see his father back home who
had been sick for a long time. Fr.
Mike's prayerful presence really
gave his father strength and
helped to cheer up his drooping
spirit. He was a great support
and encouragement for his
ailing father. But while he was at
home, Mike too was diagnosed
with typhoid and came back
sick. As a result, he was confined
to his room and kept on drips for
a few days. He strictly adhered
to a diet of kanji bhat. In the
middle of September we all had
a sort of fever in Vidya Jyoti as
some called it viral fever, dengue
or exam fever. None of us in the
house were spared from these
ailments. Rethesh Coutinho
suffered from viral fever and
really needed TLC, Looking at his
urgent needs, we rushed him to
a hospital to be under the care of
doctors and nurses. Meanwhile Amos Bage
and Pascal Dhanwar were busy in their first
terminal examination. On the other hand, Fr.
Jerome Kerketta was busy taking classes on
Tribal Theology and conducting exams on the
subject.
Fr. Mike has become quite famous not
because he is the Rector of VJ but because of
his personality, for example, taking care of the
sick members and taking them to hospital
and visiting them. He is also noticed for his
clarity of thoughts and ideas. On the occasion thof karam celebration on 13 Sept. he gave a
wonderful talk to our tribal brethren who
reside in and around Delhi on tribal sanskriti.
All the participants were quite impressed.
September 21 to 23, Fr. K.M. Joseph, the PCF,
was with us for the annual Visitation. He gave
us enough and more time to listen to us. We
could experience his encouraging and
supportive guidance and also he asked us to
relish our vocation. After our first term
examination we had five days of cultural tour
in groups of 4 to 5 persons which helped us to
begin our second term classes with fresh and
renewed enthusiasm. Fr. Jerome Kerketta
took a break and enjoyed the cool and
pleasant air with the Jesuits of Almora
Community. Fr Mike went to Jamshedpur on
September 28 to attend the
PCF's Meeting with the other
Rectors of Common Houses. We
began our second term classes th
on 5 of October. On September
16 to 18, Sch. Rethesh Cutinho
represented RTC, Ranchi from
Vidyajyothi for an Inter-Faculty
Seminar on Integral Ecology
(based on Laudato Si) at Holy
Trinity Regional Major Seminary,
Jalandar. Fr. Provincial was with
us for his annual Visitation from t h t h25 to 26 . We thank Fr.
Provincial for patiently listening
to us. It was really a grace-filled thmoment for us. On 25 October
Mr. S. Sornamanickam, the
father of Fr. Mike passed away.
Fr. Mike rushed home for the
funeral service. In the month of
October we had a few passing
visitors to VJ, namely, Fr. R.
Antonyraj and Fr. Anthony
Uvari. Thank you, Fathers, and
please keep coming.
