SUNDAY BIBLE STUDY – 9:45 AM
STUDY OF THE BOOK OF 1 & 2 PETER 1 & 2 PETER IS A STUDY ON HOW TO GET THROUGH THIS LIFE OF TRIALS, TEMPTATION AND THE ERRING DOCTRINES OF MEN. PETER’S AUDIENCE WAS NO DIFFERENT THAN NEW TESTAMENT CHRISTIANS OF OUR MODERN DAY. WE ALL FACE A WORLD THAT IS, MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, OPPOSED TO SPIRITUAL LIVING. PETER’S TWO BRIEF LETTERS ENCOURAGE US TO REMAIN STEADFAST TO THE END. THE THEME OF 1 PETER IS PERSECUTION, AND IT WAS WRITTEN TO ENCOURAGE SUFFERING BELIEVERS. 2 PETER SOUNDS A WARNING AGAINST THE INCREASING NUMBER OF FALSE TEACHERS ATTACKING THE TRUTH OF THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST. PETER GIVES GUIDANCE AND REASSURANCE TO THE GROWING CHURCH AND CLAIMS THAT THE GOSPEL THEY ARE PREACHING IS OF JESUS CHRIST. THE TROUBLE THEY WERE DEALING WITH WAS THE BEGINNING OF WHAT WE NOW KNOW AS “GNOSTICISM”, A PHILOSOPHICAL PRINCIPAL THAT WAS HURTING THE CHURCHES. PETER WENT ON TO TEACH THAT IN THE END, GOD WOULD JUDGE ALL OF THE FALSE PROPHETS. STUDYING 1 & 2 PETER WILL EQUIP THE SAINTS OF GOD WITH CONFIDENCE AND PURPOSE AS WE ACHIEVE OUR OBJECTIVE ATTAINING THE DIVINE NATURE.
WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDY – 6:30 PM STUDY OF THE BOOK OF 1 & 2 SAMUEL
GOD’S GRACE IN 1 SAMUEL IS EXEMPLIFIED BY SAMUEL AS A TYPE OF JESUS, SINCE HE IS A PROPHET, PRIEST AND KING. HIS IMPORTANCE AS GOD’S REPRESENTATIVE IS SIMILAR TO THAT OF MOSES, FOR HE WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN THE CONTINUITY OF THE COVENANT DURING THE TRANSITION FROM THE RULE OF JUDGES TO THE REIGN OF KINGS. IN THIS STUDY WE SEE HOW GOD CONTINUES TO REMAIN FAITHFUL, EVEN WHEN THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL DO NOT. THEIR KING, SAUL, MAKES SEVERAL MISTAKES AND ANGERS THE LORD, BUT THE LORD RAISES UP FOR ISRAEL A NEW KING, DAVID. THIS STUDY WILL SHOW HOW GOD’S KINGDOM WAS ESTABLISHED AND DESIGNED, GIVING US A CLEARER PICTURE OF HOW WE SHOULD LIVE AS GOD’S SUBJECTS UNDER HIS REIGN.
THURSDAY JOHN KNOX BIBLE STUDY – 10:00 AM
STUDY OF THE BOOK OF MATTHEW MATTHEW PRESENTS HIS THEME IN THE FIRST VERSE: JESUS AS THE FULFILLMENT OF PROPHECY AND OF ISRAEL’S EXPECTATION. MATTHEW’S MAIN PURPOSE IS TO PROVE TO HIS JEWISH READERS THAT JESUS IS THEIR MESSIAH. HE DOES THIS PRIMARILY BY SHOWING HOW JESUS IN HIS LIFE AND MINISTRY FULFILLED THE O T SCRIPTURES. AS A FORMER TAX COLLECTOR (ALSO CALLED “LEVI”), MATTHEW WAS QUALIFIED TO WRITE AN ACCOUNT OF JESUS LIFE AND TEACHINGS. A TAX COLLECTOR OF THAT DAY MUST KNOW GREEK, AND BE A LITERATE, WELL-ORGANIZED MAN. SOME THINK THAT MATTHEW WAS THE “RECORDER” AMONG THE DISCIPLES AND TOOK NOTES OF JESUS’ TEACHING. WE MIGHT SAY THAT WHEN MATTHEW FOLLOWED JESUS, HE LEFT EVERYTHING BEHIND-EXCEPT HIS PEN AND PAPER. ”MATTHEW NOBLY USED HIS LITERARY SKILL TO BECOME THE FIRST MAN EVER TO COMPILE AN ACCOUNT OF THE TEACHING OF JESUS.” THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW ALSO TRIUMPHANTLY ENDS WITH JESUS COMMANDING HIS FOLLOWERS TO MAKE DISCIPLES OF ALL THE NATIONS (MATTHEW 28:19-20)

“Give Thanks to the Lord” (Psalm 107:1) With Thanksgiving just around the corner, we take time, as families, to gather around the Thanksgiving table recalling all the goodness, grace and gifts with which God has enriched our lives and thanking Him for it. In our prayers, we remember those millions suffering as terror stalks their lives. Our own nation has experienced heat, drought, floods and hurricanes. As “Women on a Mission”, we are actively serving the Lord through serving others with our Mites, Quilts, Food and Clothing; to mention just a few areas of service. Through Bible Study in our Circles, our relationship to Christ grows and influences all our relationships. Life becomes a daily Thanksgiving for God’s grace and mercy while our activities are a year-long thanks offering. November Highlights – what we have been doing all year—bringing our thanks offering and celebrating our Thanksgiving to a gracious God. His light on our daily walk reveals the many blessings we enjoy. “Give thanks to the Lord, because He is good; His love is eternal.”
“Mites at Work” Those little pennies and dimes are doing amazing things. Women in Uganda are learning to take back their villages by spreading the Love of Jesus to their neighbors. Tangania Sewing Center – The women have taken great pride in their sewing school as well as the product they are producing. Lutherans for Life are there to proclaim that God gives all life value from the womb to the tomb and all life is created, redeemed and called by God.

BOOK CLUB A PIECE OF THE WORLD
By Christina Baker Kline (Author of Orphan Train) Synopsis From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the smash
bestseller ORPHAN TRAIN, a stunning and atmospheric novel of
friendship, passion, and art, inspired by Andrew Wyeth’s mysterious
and iconic painting Christina’s World.
“Later he told me that he’d been afraid to show
me the painting. He thought I wouldn’t like the way he portrayed me: dragging
myself across the field, fingers clutching dirt, my legs twisted behind. The arid
moonscape of wheatgrass and timothy. That dilapidated house in the distance
looming up like a secret that won’t stay hidden.”
To Christina Olson, the entire world was her family’s remote farm in the small coastal town of Cushing, Maine. Born in the home her family had lived in for generations, and increasingly incapacitated by illness, Christina seemed destined for a small life. Instead, for more than twenty years, she was host and inspiration for the artist Andrew Wyeth, and became the subject of one of the best known American paintings of the twentieth century. As she did in her beloved smash bestseller ORPHAN TRAIN, Christina Baker Kline interweaves fact and fiction in a powerful novel that illuminates a little-known part of America’s history. Bringing into focus the flesh-and-blood woman behind the portrait, she vividly imagines the life of a woman with a complicated relationship to her family and her past, and a special bond with one of our greatest modern artists. Told in evocative and lucid prose, A PIECE OF THE WORLD is a story about the burdens and blessings of family history, and how artist and muse can come together to forge a new and timeless legacy.
