. The month of October flew quickly by, but it was a month full of exciting accomplishments! We began the month with a lovely fundraising event in support of cancer research. Staff and students alike tied up their laces and ran for a cure. A group of grade 5 student leaders (the Terry Fox Crew) organized an “energizer and cheers for the school on the day of the run”. Our school received a pennant in honour of 20 years of participation in the event! During the month of October we successfully launched the nutrition program! There are currently over 300 students receiving a nutritious meal everyday. With the support of several dedicated staff, passionate parent volunteers and a wonderful team of student leaders, our students enjoy a healthy morning meal everyday! October was a month of celebrations. In true Marvin Heights fashion, we came together to celebrate and enjoy various special events. On October 28 th we celebrated Diwali, the “Festival of Lights.” Students came to school in their finest cultural dress. They participated in samosa sales and made lamps and other symbols of happiness and prosperity. In the month of October we also celebrated Halloween. Students wore costumes and participated in a parade in the school. Classrooms carved pumkins and learned all about how pumkins grow. Student leaders from 4/5, 5A and 5B developed creative centres for the school to explore and enjoy! October was a wonderful month! Marvin Heights looks forward to what November will bring!

School Council At our October meeting the council discussed important issues related to Marvin Heights. We would love for more parents to join us for these very important meetings. The council made the decision to move our next meeting to the morning of December 15th in our school library. It is our hope that this time change will allow more parents to attend. Safety is a top priority at our school. Here is a list of traffic tips to keep students, staff and parents safe while commuting to and from school.
Respect traffic signs and road markers around the school. Drive slowly and with caution on and near school property. Adhere to the posted
speed limits on any surrounding streets used by students on their way to and from school.
Always yield to pedestrian traffic. Wait for students, staff members and parents to cross before driving past them.
Do not double park or do anything else to block traffic or draw your child off the curb and into traffic. Do not take shortcuts over curbs.
During regular drop-off times, students are to remain in the car until it is safe for them to exit the car onto the curb.
Remind your child to only cross the street at an intersection or crosswalk. They should never “jaywalk” by crossing in the middle of the street.
Students who bike to school should always wear a helmet, and follow all traffic laws. They should only cross the street at a crosswalk or intersection—never in the middle of the road.
Kiss and Ride at Marvin Heights
When dropping your child off at the school, use the Kiss'n'Ride area. This is a supervised area that is designed to keep students safe.
Do not double park or do anything else to block traffic.
Have your child ready to exit the car when you reach the curb. Say goodbye to your child before you park at the curb to let your child out of your car.
Follow the directions of staff or volunteers on duty in the school parking lot and treat staff, students, volunteers, passengers and other drivers with respect.
Consider parking off site and walking a short distance to school. This will give you time to talk to your children about their day, review new vocabulary words, math concepts, etc.
Bus cancellation & closing schools due to bad weather
During the winter months, we may need to cancel buses or close schools because of inclement weather.
Information regarding details of cancellations or closures will be announced on radio and television stations listed below and posted at www.peelschools.org, school websites and www.stopr.ca.
