November Prayer Diary

For those who can make it, Morning Prayer takes place throughout the week

at various times (see weekly newsletter) and on a Saturday morning at

9.00am. For those who cannot make Morning Prayer, be encouraged to

pray using this Morning Prayer outline on your own, remembering that

sometime between 7.00am-9.30am you will not be praying alone but at the

same time as other people at St Martin’s. Therefore, in this way as a

Church, we will be praying together. However, this Morning Prayer outline

is only a guide, remember:

Pray as you can — not as you can’t

Wednesday 1st

November I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people. Ephesians 1:18. Today, from our church family, we pray for Martin King Collect for All Saints Day O Almighty God, who hast knit together you elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son. Give us grace so to follow thy blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living that we may come to those unspeakable joys which you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Our charity for November is “The Big Feed” and our representative at St. Martin’s is Margaret Carter. “The Big Feed is a charity run project backed by Walsall Community Church and other local churches whose aim is to help support the homeless, vulnerable and under-privileged people of Walsall and its surrounding areas. We provide food, clothing, toilet and shower facilities, advice and a friendly face to those who need it most. The heart of the Big Feed is a freshly cooked two-course meal every Sunday afternoon along with plenty of tea and coffee.” Many of the St. Martin’s church family are committed to providing food for the Sunday meal so this is a charity close to many people’s hearts. We pray that the money donated to this organisation will be able to provide comfort to some of the poorest people in our town. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Thursday 2

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 1 Peter 2:9. Today, from our church family, we pray for Emma Knott.

As we read our newspapers, listen to the radio and watch television, we are made very aware of the plight of those in faraway places who are suffering from famine and hardship because of crop failures. We feel overwhelmed by a sense of impotence and futility. Tearfund asks us to pray for people in places like Malawi which is in the grip of terrible food crisis. “Prayer encourages, strengthens and can change the circumstances of anyone, anywhere.” “Lord Jesus, Thank you for carrying our burdens and giving us rest. Thank you that your yoke is easy and your burden is light. Thank you that you selflessly took the ultimate burden of sin and death upon yourself. Help us in our daily lives to carry the burdens of those around us. We lift up all those around the world who are suffering from the burden of hunger. We pray that you will bring your peace, provision and protection to people in places like Malawi. Please bless and strengthen all those who are working to bring an end to hunger. Amen” (Tearfund) Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Friday 3

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Romans 13:1. Today, from our church family, we pray for Judith Knott. As the Street Ministry Team go on duty tonight they will be greatly heartened to learn that the Council are going to provide a night shelter for the months of December and January. We pray for the success of this outreach project and that there will be enough volunteers to run the shelter well. Thank you, Generous and Compassionate Lord, for such wonderful provision. It is such a blessing that in these times of economic difficulty, the Council has chosen to support the most vulnerable and underprivileged people in our town. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

November He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. 2 Corinthians 3:6. Today, from our church family, we pray for Margaret Law. In our Saturday prayers for Walsall, we give thanks today, Loving Father, for the services provided by our GPs, Dentists, Midwives and Nurses. Lord, we feel blessed to live in a country where such services are provided for all. Thank you for the integrity and work ethic of these professionals who face many challenges in their working lives. Help them to provide the very best care available to those whom they meet on a daily basis. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Sunday 5

This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. Romans 13:6. Today, from our church family, we pray for Jean Llewellyn. Collect for the 4

th Sunday before Advent

Almighty and eternal God, you have kindled the flame of love in the hearts of the saints: grant to us the same faith and power of love, that, as we rejoice in their triumphs, we may be sustained by their example and fellowship; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen Today marks the end of Suffering Church Action Week when we have stood in solidarity with our persecuted Christian brothers and sisters around the world. With Barnabus Fund we share this prayer: “Lord Jesus, we long for Your return to set right the injustices of our world, to bring an end to violence, conflict and war, to vindicate Your people and establish Your Kingdom. As we think of Christians around the world suffering for Your Name, waiting patiently for

deliverance, we ask that You will fill them with hope and confidence in You. O God of Peace, we rejoice in Your promise that You will soon crush Satan under our feet. We join with our persecuted brothers and sisters in looking for the day when sin and evil, death and destruction are no more and our enemy is defeated. (Romans 16:20)” Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Monday 6

He made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfilment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ. Ephesians 1:9-10. Today, from our church family, we pray for Norman Luckett. Precious Lord, our congregation at St. Martin’s is getting older and many find that they are experiencing ill health and numerous other conditions which are a consequence of the aging process. Please help us to be a loving, supportive community where we help each other in every possible way that we can. “Eternal God, reach out in love, and support those for whom advancing years bring trials. Though health may fade and faculties fail, strength decline and vigour wane, grant the assurance that your grace is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow, a fixed point in a world of change. So, then, in your mercy, grant help and strength, comfort and joy, and above all, confidence in your enduring purpose – the knowledge that, come what may, your love will never let us go. Amen.” (Nick Fawcett) Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Tuesday 7

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—

for kings and all those in

authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 1 Timothy 2:1-2. Today, from our church family, we pray for David Lynam.

Father God, we want to thank you for all those in our church family who serve on the Ministry Team and the PCC. Thank you for their wisdom and guidance, their dedication and commitment. Each one willingly gives up their time to attend meetings and training sessions while contributing to the smooth running of our church. We pray for clarity of vision and purpose as they seek to grow your kingdom here at St. Martin’s. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Wednesday 8

But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” Joshua 24:15. Today, from our church family, we pray for Jacky Lynam. Dearest Lord, we give thanks for those who are responsible for the music which enhances our worship in our church services. Thank you for Penny Wheble, our Musical Director. Penny is constantly looking for new church music while keeping our traditional songs and old favourites as part of our services. For many in the congregation, our worship songs help them to worship and feel even closer to You, Heavenly Father. “The Musician's Prayer Oh Lord, please bless this music that it might glorify your name. May the talent that you have bestowed upon me be used only to serve you. Let this music be a witness to your majesty and love, and remind us that you are always watching, and listening, from your throne above. May your presence and beauty be found in every note, and may the words that are sung reach the hearts of your people so they will draw closer to you. May your Spirit guide us through every measure so that we might be the instruments of your peace, and proclaim your glory with glad voices. Amen” Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

November “Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the LORD, “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool. Isaiah 1:18 Today, from our church family, we pray for Bill Mason. Father God, we give you thanks and praise for all the many different groups who use our church halls. Thank you for Jane Wharton who works so hard administering the hall lettings and making sure that the premises are always used in a respectful way. This is an onerous task and Jane performs it with diligence and good humour. We are especially grateful for the new kitchen, which makes St. Martin’s such an attractive building for classes and meetings and this in turn generates funds which help the church’s finances. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Friday 10

God’s voice thunders in marvellous ways; he does great things beyond our understanding. He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’ and to the rain shower, ‘Be a mighty downpour.’ Job 37:5-6. Today, from our church family, we pray for Tia. Dearest Lord, we continue to pray for our children and young families. They are our future and the life blood of the church. We pray for Messy Church, for our Rainbows, Brownies and Guides and for our Parents and Toddlers Group. We would love to see many more young families coming to St. Martin’s and we pray for growth in this area. Help us, Lord, we pray, to be an open, welcoming, loving church where all feel comfortable and accepted. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Saturday 11

Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father

is not in them. For everything in the

world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 1 John 2:15-16

Today, from our church family, we pray for Chanel

A prayer for peace and remembrance “O God of truth and justice, we hold before you those whose memory we cherish, and those whose names we will never know. Help us to lift our eyes above the torment of this broken world, and grant us the grace to pray for those who wish us harm. As we honour the past, may we put our faith in your future; for you are the source of life and hope, now and for ever. Amen.” (C of E website) Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Sunday 12th November – Remembrance Sunday

For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives. Colossians 1:9

Today, from our church family, we pray for Porsche Collect for the 3rd Sunday before Advent Almighty Father, whose will is to restore all things

in your beloved Son, the King of all: govern the hearts and minds of those in authority, and bring the families of the nations, divided and torn apart by the ravages of sin, to be subject to his just and gentle rule; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. On this Remembrance Sunday we pray- “God of justice and peace, we pray for those who have been injured or disabled through war. For those who have lost homes and security through conflict; for those who have lost loved relatives in wars; for those who face danger and take risks for peace; for all those, especially children, caught up in current conflicts;

for refugees and all those in need of aid and other help. God of encouragement and Saviour of the despairing, comfort those who remember past sacrifices and guide us in building a just and peaceful community for all. Amen” Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Monday 13

For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.

Live as free people, but do not use

your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves. 1 Peter 2:15-16 Today, from our church family, we pray for Katie Father God, teach us how this obedience to you brings our true freedom; how focusing on our connection with you returns us to our Eden relationship, where we can ‘walk with you’. May our relationship with you our God, bring the freedom of truth, guarding our hearts, minds and mouths against gossip and all conversation which seeks to build our own reputation by sacrificing the feelings and experiences of others, and implicitly ourselves. As Peter encourages us to live as slaves of God, may this be our empowering freedom where we work to build God’s Kingdom, inspiring us to be supportive, truthful and accountable Christians. We pray for areas in our lives or relationships, which would benefit from re-establishing Christ at the centre. We ask for the opportunity to glorify him with shared joys and celebration, with apology and comfort, and with challenge and generosity. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Tuesday 14

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. 1 Peter 3:18 Today, from our church family, we pray for Lynsey

Abba Father, just as Jesus was resurrected in the Spirit, may we also be alive in this Holy Spirit. May we be convicted of sin in the assurance of salvation, and focused on developing and encouraging the fruits of your Spirit. Give us the space to share love, help us to notice opportunities for joy and celebration, in all areas may we be conduits of your peace and in times of strain and need may we bring patience. Where there is pain and stress may we bring gentle kindness and righteous goodness, and throughout all our dealings may we feel and express a faithfulness, humility, and self-control. Christ who has suffered for our sins, fill us with the grace of these gifts of the Spirit. Where today we are challenged by one or more of these gifts, we ask for the ongoing desire to demonstrate the aspect of the Spirit and give the situation over to Christ. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Wednesday 15

Trouble and distress have come upon me, but your commands give me delight. Psalm 119:143 Today, from our church family, we pray for Peter Mackenzie Almighty God, thank you for the talents, abilities, and spiritual gifts which you have given to the children and young people in our local schools and colleges. May your presence be known throughout the pressure of forming and sustaining friendships, the stress of tests and the development of new skills, and the confusion of the unknown future. We pray particularly for young people who are at the beginning of their Christian faith; that their belief be supported and nourished by other people of faith, by the Word of God and by the experience of your Holy Spirit. Help them to grow closer to you, to use their gifts and talents to serve your will - we thank you for all that they have and will accomplish and achieve in their lives and for your Kingdom. We ask for the gift of your strength and wisdom for all those young people who struggle and suffer, whose time in education holds pain and unrest. We ask for your protection for those children who feel fear, distrust and suffering; asking for your protection to be wrought by the teachers, pastoral staff and governors who are tasked with their care. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

November Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law. Psalm 119:18 Today, from our church family, we pray for Judith Matthews Lord Jesus we pray in your name for our town. We pray for the needs, desires and experiences of each individual, we pray for the relationships and security of each house and we pray for the hope and strengthening of communities. May your spirit hover over all the people and events in our town, just as it hovered over the waters of the deep at the point of creation. May each Christian be fed by your spirit through their Church and may each Church support the network of Christians who grow towards you and towards all wonderful things for our town, brought by our relationship with you. Today we thank you for the achievements of our community and we ask for your tangible love for those in need. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Friday 17

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. Psalm 119:105 Today, from our church family, we pray for Freya Matthews “Breathe into me, Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy. Move in me, Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy. Attract my heart, Holy Spirit, that I may love only what is holy. Strengthen me, Holy Spirit, that I may defend all that is holy. Protect me, Holy Spirit, that I may always be holy.” (Saint Augustine) Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Saturday 18

In our gratitude for these sustaining structures within our local Christian life, we ask for each to be strengthened by your continued vision, blessing and growth. We lift before you all worshiping and serving Christian communities in the West Midlands, remembering especially all who are known specially to us. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Sunday 19

Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night. Psalm 1:1-2 Today, from our church family, we pray for Debra Mayo Collect for the 2nd Sunday before Advent: Heavenly Father, whose blessed Son was revealed to destroy the works of the devil and to make us the children of God and heirs of eternal life: grant that we, having this hope, may purify ourselves even as he is pure; that when he shall appear in power and great glory we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Monday 20

Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. Psalm 95:1-2 Today, from our church family, we pray for Jenny Mayo-Lythall

We pray in gratitude for the multitude of blessings in our lives, our families and in our communities. At a time in our Church where there has been much suffering and pain, we pray for healing, and for a palpable experience of your loving presence. We thank you for our Christian community, we praise you for the gifts of your people and we remain grateful for the blessing we are able to be to one another. May our Church, be built on the Rock of Christ. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Tuesday 21st November I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. For in him you have been enriched in every way—with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge— 1 Corinthians 1:4-5 Today, from our church family, we pray for Andrew Lythall Father God, I know I am fortunate to have plenty to eat. Help me to keep in my prayers, the hungry. I know I am fortunate to have a comfortable home, Help me to keep in my prayers, the homeless. I know I am fortunate to have friends and family to love and who support and care for me. Help me to keep in my prayers, the lonely and friendless. I know I am fortunate to be able to worship you freely. Help me to keep in my prayers, those persecuted for their faith and those who do not know you. Shake me out of my selfishness and complacency and guide me in ways to help and support those less fortunate than myself. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer Wednesday 22

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Colossians 3:15 Today, from our church family, we pray for Edward Mayo-Lythall Our weekly prayers for our town focus on Police and law enforcement. Heavenly Father, bless the members of our police force and all whose responsibility is to uphold our laws. Give them patience in dealing with difficult situations, impartiality in doing their

duties, cool judgement when decisions must be made, and courage when danger stands in the path of duty. Keep them in your care and grant them your guidance so that we may live in peace and security. We pray for police and other security agencies nationwide who are striving to protect us from the threats of terrorism and extremism and give thanks for their vigilance in preventing many attacks occurring. Finally we pray for the security of our world and for all the innocent people and their families who have been affected by terrorist attacks in recent months. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer Thursday 23rd November Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations. Psalm 100:4-5 Today, from our church family, we pray for Rosemary Mayo-Lythall Tomorrow is designated as “Buy Nothing Day”- “to shop less and live more”. It is also “Black Friday” when the big companies try to persuade us to shop non-stop both instore and online. The big retailers use the event to spin out highly competitive one day offers, which often creates a rabid free for all. “Black Friday” is creating a brand of shoppers who will trample and fight each other to get their hands on next year’s landfill. Black Friday sucks the life out of small businesses, who cannot compete against this ruthless price cutting. Lord, help us to challenge ourselves, our family and friends to switch off from shopping and tune into life’s real values and to think about the environmental and ethical consequences of over consumerism. If we really need to shop on Buy Nothing Day, help us to ignore the big retailers and to support local independent shops and businesses. Help us to make a commitment to consuming less, recycling more and challenging companies to clean up and be fair. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer

Friday 24th November So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. Colossians 2:6-7

Today, from our church family, we pray for Dot McCloskey. Tomorrow is the United Nations World Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and heralds 16 days of campaigning against gender based violence. Merciful Father, we pray for the protection and support of all women, in the UK and throughout the world, who live in fear of physical or mental abuse in their own homes or communities, and for all those who suffer discrimination, cruelty and injustice because of their gender. We pray for continued condemnation of those who oppose education and equal rights for women and for a world where women in all countries and cultures are shown the same respect and consideration as men. We pray for women struggling to function as equal members of society in countries where their rights are not recognised by all, especially for women politicians and state employees, and also for those made to marry while still children or against their wishes and for women who are trafficked and forced into prostitution. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer Saturday 25th November And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:17 Today, from our church family, we pray for Dee McDowell Today is St Martin’s Christmas Fayre and we give thanks for all those who have been involved organising and making preparations for it - those who have baked cakes and those who have made and found items for the various stalls. We pray for those manning stalls and serving refreshments today and that this event will be successful in raising funds for our church and this years’ chosen

charity. We give grateful thanks for all those who work to support St Martin’s in so many different ways. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer Sunday 26th November Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, Hebrews 12:28 Today, from our church family, we pray for Andy McDowell Collect for Christ the King – the Sunday before Advent Eternal Father, whose Son Jesus Christ ascended to the throne of heaven that he might rule over all things as Lord and King: keep the Church in the unity of the Spirit and in the bond of peace, and bring the whole created order to worship at his feet; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen We pray for Jenny and her family and for their health and well-being. We give thanks that we have Jenny as our vicar and ask you Loving Lord to give her inspiration and strength for her ministry here and her endeavours. We also pray for Penny and Margaret our lay ministers, our Wardens and their Deputies. They all have a lot of hard work to do and also a large amount of responsibility in their roles. We pray that we will all be a help and support to Jenny, Penny and Margaret, the Wardens and one another, as we work together to make St Martin’s a guiding light in our community. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer Monday 27th November Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. Colossians 3:16

Today, from our church family, we pray for Anne McGowan We pray for all those involved in the judicial system; judges and magistrates, barristers and lawyers and for all those subsequently involved with those who are convicted, for prison officers and members of the probation service. In our prisons Lord, keep all who face danger safe. We pray for sufficient prison personnel and training. We pray for rehabilitation and education to try to prevent some inmates reoffending and for the means to eradicate drugs and weapons and reduce violence there. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer Tuesday 28th November Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done. 1 Chronicles 16:8 Today, from our church family, we pray for Dennis Moore We pray for all the children who attend our Sunday groups, Messy Church and other activities and that they will enjoy themselves and at the same time learn about you Lord and your love for us all. We give grateful thanks for the efforts of those who organise and help with children’s activities and pray that there will always be enough helpers for this important part of our church life. We pray for any endeavours they undertake in the weeks before Christmas. “Thank you God for the faith and love of children and young people. Please help us as a church family to learn from and be encouraged by one another.” Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer Wednesday 29th November Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever. Psalm 136 Today, from our church family, we pray for Today, from our church family, we pray for Brenda Moore

Compassionate Father we continue to pray for those who are suffering because of the recent hurricanes, excessive rainfall, flooding and drought. Lord, be with those who now mourn the loss of loved ones, those who are sick and injured, the starving and those attempting to rebuild homes and livelihoods. We think especially of those who live on the islands in the Caribbean where the hurricane has caused massive devastation of homes and other buildings, for the 150 families homeless after the mudslide in Sierra Leone, and the thousands still malnourished because of the drought in east Africa. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer Thursday 30th November But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives. 2 Peter 3:10-11 Today, from our church family, we pray for Sam Morgan The Collect for St Andrew the Apostle Almighty God, who gave such grace to your apostle Saint Andrew that he readily obeyed the call of your Son Jesus Christ and brought his brother with him: call us by your holy word, and give us grace to follow you without delay and to tell the good news of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. As we look forward to the beginning of Advent next Sunday and the last four weeks before Christmas, we pray that we will hold the wonder of our Lord’s birth in our hearts and not let it be overshadowed by rush and bustle of Christmas preparations and shopping. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer
