More than 40 Club members attended the Welcome Back party at the Marco Island Yacht Club on October 19th Sorry I couldnt get everybody in one picture as we stretched out onto many tables Although the weather was rainy some of the members drove their classics and parked in front of the Yacht Club Below with a view of the Marco Island Bridge in the background a smaller group of members are engaged in conversations before being served Obviously their discussions related to antique carsThanks Yvonne for sharing
Presidentrsquos Page (a continuation of last months RB inadvertently left out of the last Running
Board together with an update)
There was a good turnout for our Chefs Night Out on July 15th and the eighteen
members who attended enjoyed a super Italian dinner at the Olive Garden As
usual when we all get together the conversations were lively and engaging and
not just limited to cars Thanks Yvonne for making the necessary
arrangements I hope when the rest of the membership returns after summer
and after we resume our regular meeting schedule we will hear of more exploits
and adventuresmdashwhether car related or not
Danny and Kaye Mullis hosted the August ldquoIce Cream Runrdquo on the 6th at the
Silver Lakes Clubhouse In addition to our members a number of their
neighbors also attended and there was not a quiet table in the place Once
again our members demonstrated how open and engaging we can be and
maybe a few of the neighbors will consider joining our Club I know no one left
with an unsatisfied ldquosweet toothrdquo Thanks Danny and Kay for making the
arrangements
We again had an Italian feast when we met and socialized on August 19th at
Albertos on Fifth thanks to arrangements made by Hank F for our Chefs Night
Out While the one long table resulted in there being pockets of conversations
our 20 members circulated which was made easier because the restaurant was
not crowded The food was fantastic and the price was right with the early
special menu
Our regular meeting schedule resumed September 16th and meetings will
continue to be held every third Monday of the month at the Methodist Church
Think of bringing a neighbor or friend who might thereafter join our Club Our
next meeting is on October 21st and the program title is ldquoThe Bonneville Salt
Flatsrdquo The Executive Committees proposed slate of officers will also be
announced If anyone is interested in serving as an officeror director you are
encouraged to attend the Executive Board meeting on Monday October 7th
at 3690 Radio Road 101 (at Radio Rd and Donna St) The meeting will begin
at 6pm and we try to adjourn by 7pm or so Elections will take place at our

what thirty or so rambunctious boys do to entertain themselves Talk about
being ldquorevved uprdquo As wild as the boys were inside the facility outside the cars
they were quiet respectful and inquisitive regarding the cars A good time was
had by all
The Club provided the three cars for display as requested at the Naples Depot
even on September 21st Wes Kunkle Wes Kunkle Jr and I had our cars on
display The crowds were mostly young families and the weather held out The

Thanks to Peter Blackford for sharing his and Sandys Great Britain adventure
with us at our September 23rd meeting What a treat to have vicariously enjoyed
being at Highclere Castle (think Downton Abbey) through the many pictures they
took At the racing grounds the sculpture was dazzling and the engineering to
accomplish it amazing
Our Welcome Back Party was a hugh success Many ldquoThanksrdquo go to Yvonne for
making the party arrangements and to Barbara Donald for securing the Marco
Island Yacht facility which allowed 40 or more members in attendance to
reacquaint We also took advantage of the opportunity to wish Tom and Elysee
Marshall a ldquoHappy Anniversaryrdquo
The Bonneville Salt Flats program on October 21st held everyones interest and
the ice cream break was very welcome so our ears could recover Unfortunately
we heard from the Methodist Church that our clean-up was not up to par I will
address this at our meeting on Novemer 18th It is a credit to the Club that all
our members pitch in at the end of the nmght regarding chairs and tables and
with a little more effort and attention we should be able to leave the facility in as
good a condition as we receive it
Dont forget---ELECTIONS at our next meeting on 1128 Also I hope you
have been giving thought to whether the Club should order magnetic displays of
the club logo for placing on our cars at non-AACA shows or whenever else it
seems appropriate Lets discuss it and vote on it at our next meeting Other

Keith Fisher
Perhaps the oldest active member of the Naples-Marco AACA club is Keith Fisher
Kathy Hollis reports in ldquoNovember Historyrdquo that Keith was one of the founding
members of the Club back in the early 1980s In 1982 he was the president and has
remained a member to this day So maybe hes not the oldest in terms of age but a
long long time member nontheless Keith and his wife Helga spend their ldquoout-of-
Floridardquo time in North Carolina and he recently sent a photo of the two of them in
Iowa with the Mississippi River in the background He sent the pic to Mal Newbourne
who shared it with me stating they were visiting near Davenport where the ldquoAmerican
Pickersrdquo have their store of ldquobarn findsrdquo ldquoAmerican Pickersrdquo is a TV show by the way
and the guys go all over looking for antiques of all sorts and in places you can hardly
imagine Its a ldquofunrdquo program
Letter from France
In case you forgot to change the batteries in your calendar you may not be
aware that this year is the 100th anniversary of Citroeumln While doing some
research I happened to stumble upon a fascinating bit of wartime Citroeumln
lore It involves screwing with Nazis in a genuinely clever and subtle way
that nevertheless had big repercussions Ill explain
So when France was occupied by the Germans in 1940 major French
factories like Citroeumln were forced to produce equipment for the
Nazis Citroeumln president Pierre-Jules Boulanger knew he couldnt just
refuse to produce anything but he also knew theres no way in hell hes
going to just roll over and build trucks for a bunch of filthy Nazis Pierre had
a plan
John Reynoldsrsquo book Citroen 2CV describes Boulangers sabotage
efforts Of course he instructed workers to set a nice leisurely pace when
building trucks (likely Citroeumln T45 trucks) for the Wermacht but thats fairly
obvious What was brilliant was Boulangers idea to move the little notch on
the trucks oil dipsticks that indicated the proper level of oil down just a bit
lower
By moving the notch down the trucks would not have enough oil but
German mechanics would have no idea because hey the little notch on
the dipstick says itrsquos just fine Then after the truck had been used for a
while and is out deployed somewhere crucial whammo the engine seizes
up and youve got a lot of angry stranded vulnerable Nazis balling up their
little fists and barking curses in German
Its such a fantastic act of sabotage because Its extremely cheap to
implement its subtle theres no way to see something amiss is happening
as the trucks are being built and it delivers its blow away from the site of
the sabotage and when it will cause the most inconvenience and trouble
Thats some mighty good sabotaging Pierre
(Thanks Peter Blackford for this articleHistory is funny)

November History
The history of the Naples-Marco AACA actually begins with another club called
the Royal Palm Region AACA That group even held a National Fall Meet of AACA
September 23-26 1976 at the Marco Beach Hotel
Fast forward to 1981 when Dr Mason Seibel moved to Naples from Honolulu and
had an interest in starting an AACA Region He had been a member in Honolulu
and wanted to start a new group in Naples There is not much history of what
happened to the Royal Palm Region except that it had disbanded and several
members were interested in joining the new group There are numerous letters
to Dr Seibel about forming the new region and copies of all the forms that had
to be completed One of the letters states that the closest AACA Regions was in
Cape Coral The former treasurer of the Royal Palm Region was a member of
Naples-Marco but they had to get Nationalrsquos approval to move the $76 left in
their account over to the new region
The application for the region charter is dated September 15 1981 and is signed
by 15 members of AACA It was approved in Hershey on October 7 1981 A
letter of congratulations from National is in our history The first newsletter was
issued in October 1981 and was called ldquoThe Collectorrdquo There is a listing of
members dated May1 1982 Keith Fisher a former president of Naples-Marco
Region is in that group Keith is still a member 37 years later

Immokalee Florida
Immokalee Road in Naples is the surest easiest way to this rural
community about 40 miles east of Naples Its a pleasurable drive even for
the driver of the most ancient of classic cars but what is there to do once
there So if you are only interested in a day trip you might be somewhat
limited We went recently for a half-day trip and spent time just looking
around at all the fruit and vegetable markets such as this one shown
below It is typical of the many markets you might see in a moderately
sized town in Mexico I lived in Tampico for several years and became quite
fascinated in all sorts of items you could get in these open air store fronts
I suggest Googling ldquoImmokaleerdquo and see what might be of interest You
might be surprisedjust the drive over there is quite a hoot and once there
try out one of the Mexican restaurants Itll be worth the trip You can
even stop off at the Seminole Casino and try your luck at the slots
Our monthly meeting is November 18
Keith Pershing will be doing a talk about his trip to England including his factory tours and the Goodwood Revival
We will also be serving subs that night so come hungry

MEETING IS THE THIRD MONDAY OF THE MONTH
Oops ndash should really say ldquoGet an E-mail boxrdquohellipfor fast free and colorful Running
Board delivery
Flatsrdquo The Executive Committees proposed slate of officers will also be
announced If anyone is interested in serving as an officeror director you are
encouraged to attend the Executive Board meeting on Monday October 7th
at 3690 Radio Road 101 (at Radio Rd and Donna St) The meeting will begin
at 6pm and we try to adjourn by 7pm or so Elections will take place at our
November meeting on the 18th
(updated news)
On September 6th we had five cars on display at the Chick-fil-A Mother-Son
Night Wes Kunkle Ron Schlectweg Murrel and Kathy Hollis Yvonne and Paul
Rhoads and I were not only treated to dinner but we also were reminded of
what thirty or so rambunctious boys do to entertain themselves Talk about
being ldquorevved uprdquo As wild as the boys were inside the facility outside the cars
they were quiet respectful and inquisitive regarding the cars A good time was
had by all
The Club provided the three cars for display as requested at the Naples Depot
even on September 21st Wes Kunkle Wes Kunkle Jr and I had our cars on
display The crowds were mostly young families and the weather held out The
Depot folks were appreciative of our participation
The Bonneville Salt Flats program on October 21st held everyones interest and
the ice cream break was very welcome so our ears could recover Unfortunately
we heard from the Methodist Church that our clean-up was not up to par I will
address this at our meeting on Novemer 18th It is a credit to the Club that all
our members pitch in at the end of the nmght regarding chairs and tables and
with a little more effort and attention we should be able to leave the facility in as
good a condition as we receive it
Dont forget---ELECTIONS at our next meeting on 1128 Also I hope you
have been giving thought to whether the Club should order magnetic displays of
the club logo for placing on our cars at non-AACA shows or whenever else it
seems appropriate Lets discuss it and vote on it at our next meeting Other
datesevents to remember The Rookery Bay Car Show is 1116 the Club
will be displaying cars at Aston Gardens on 126 from 10am to 1pm (lunch
included) our Holiday Luncheon at the Bonefish Grill in Naples is 1211 our
Gala Dinner dance is 11120 at the Longshore Country Clubmdashthink of a friend
or neighbor who you need to thank for somethingmdashyou can treat themthank
them by buying tickets for them to our Gala The Club fills its quota we get to
meet new people and perhaps some will like us and join as new members
Lastly Ron Schlechtweg has agreed to be the contact person for listing events
He will coordinate with Patrick Parker to see that a currentl listing of events
appears in the Running Board If you are aware of any events you feel Club
members will be interested in please contact Ron My thanks to him for
agreeing to this undertaking

the Royal Palm Region AACA That group even held a National Fall Meet of AACA

MEETING IS THE THIRD MONDAY OF THE MONTH
Oops ndash should really say ldquoGet an E-mail boxrdquohellipfor fast free and colorful Running

Flatsrdquo The Executive Committees proposed slate of officers will also be
announced If anyone is interested in serving as an officeror director you are
encouraged to attend the Executive Board meeting on Monday October 7th
at 3690 Radio Road 101 (at Radio Rd and Donna St) The meeting will begin
at 6pm and we try to adjourn by 7pm or so Elections will take place at our
November meeting on the 18th
The Bonneville Salt Flats program on October 21st held everyones interest and
the ice cream break was very welcome so our ears could recover Unfortunately
we heard from the Methodist Church that our clean-up was not up to par I will
address this at our meeting on Novemer 18th It is a credit to the Club that all
our members pitch in at the end of the nmght regarding chairs and tables and
with a little more effort and attention we should be able to leave the facility in as
good a condition as we receive it
Dont forget---ELECTIONS at our next meeting on 1128 Also I hope you
have been giving thought to whether the Club should order magnetic displays of
the club logo for placing on our cars at non-AACA shows or whenever else it
seems appropriate Lets discuss it and vote on it at our next meeting Other
datesevents to remember The Rookery Bay Car Show is 1116 the Club
will be displaying cars at Aston Gardens on 126 from 10am to 1pm (lunch
included) our Holiday Luncheon at the Bonefish Grill in Naples is 1211 our
Gala Dinner dance is 11120 at the Longshore Country Clubmdashthink of a friend
or neighbor who you need to thank for somethingmdashyou can treat themthank
them by buying tickets for them to our Gala The Club fills its quota we get to
meet new people and perhaps some will like us and join as new members
Lastly Ron Schlechtweg has agreed to be the contact person for listing events
He will coordinate with Patrick Parker to see that a currentl listing of events
appears in the Running Board If you are aware of any events you feel Club
members will be interested in please contact Ron My thanks to him for

Perhaps the oldest active member of the Naples-Marco AACA club is Keith Fisher
Kathy Hollis reports in ldquoNovember Historyrdquo that Keith was one of the founding
members of the Club back in the early 1980s In 1982 he was the president and has
remained a member to this day So maybe hes not the oldest in terms of age but a
long long time member nontheless Keith and his wife Helga spend their ldquoout-of-
Floridardquo time in North Carolina and he recently sent a photo of the two of them in
Iowa with the Mississippi River in the background He sent the pic to Mal Newbourne
who shared it with me stating they were visiting near Davenport where the ldquoAmerican

and the guys go all over looking for antiques of all sorts and in places you can hardly

The application for the region charter is dated September 15 1981 and is signed
by 15 members of AACA It was approved in Hershey on October 7 1981 A
letter of congratulations from National is in our history The first newsletter was
issued in October 1981 and was called ldquoThe Collectorrdquo There is a listing of
members dated May1 1982 Keith Fisher a former president of Naples-Marco

remained a member to this day So maybe hes not the oldest in terms of age but a
long long time member nontheless Keith and his wife Helga spend their ldquoout-of-

Thats some mighty good sabotaging Pierre

lore It involves screwing with Nazis in a genuinely clever and subtle way
that nevertheless had big repercussions Ill explain

We will also be serving subs that night so come hungry

there So if you are only interested in a day trip you might be somewhat
limited We went recently for a half-day trip and spent time just looking
around at all the fruit and vegetable markets such as this one shown
below It is typical of the many markets you might see in a moderately
sized town in Mexico I lived in Tampico for several years and became quite
fascinated in all sorts of items you could get in these open air store fronts
I suggest Googling ldquoImmokaleerdquo and see what might be of interest You
might be surprisedjust the drive over there is quite a hoot and once there
try out one of the Mexican restaurants Itll be worth the trip You can
even stop off at the Seminole Casino and try your luck at the slots
Our monthly meeting is November 18
Keith Pershing will be doing a talk about his trip to England including his factory tours and the Goodwood Revival
We will also be serving subs that night so come hungry
