Health Fair
Be an active participant in your health. Learn how
to reduce your risk of various diseases and in-
crease your sense of well-being and safety. One-on-
one screenings and activities include: blood pres-
sure check, foot care information, talk with a geria-
trician, cognition and memory techniques, fall prevention, sleep evaluation, nutri-
tion and fitness education, medication review, and benefits eligibility screening.
Information about Medicare fraud and a personal health care journal will be avail-
able. The Health Fair will be Friday, November 18th from 10:00am to 1:00pm at
the Senior Center. It’s FREE! No reservations are necessary.
Thanksgiving Day Dinner: Thursday, November 24 Fred Deni’s Back on Broadway restaurant and the Senior Center are hosting a
Thanksgiving Dinner for adults 50 years of age and older on November 24th.
Tickets are $2.50 each and will be available during the Healthy Lunches Program
Nov. 7 and 17 at Reed Park; Nov. 10 at Virginia Ave Park; Nov. 3 and 16 at Ken
Edwards Center; and at the Senior Center Nov. 2nd until tickets are sold out.
Don’t wait to purchase your tickets. Maximum 2 tickets per per-
son. There are two seatings: 11:30am and 1:30pm. Attendees
must have their own transportation. BBB lines 1, 5 & Rapid 10
go within 1 block of the lunch location: Back on Broadway,

Beginning Drawing Workshops — Join Dina Ferrentino Lamb, art
teacher and artist, as she continues her beginning drawing workshop
series at the Senior Center. Please sign-up in advance at the Senior
Center office. Materials will be provided, but space is limited and pri-
ority will be given to those who attended previous workshops. The
next workshop will be on Monday, November 28th and Monday, De-
cember 12th from 1:00pm to 2:30pm.
Your Favorites Continue: ENHANCE Healthy Cooking Workshop Series — This popular series
featuring Joya Parenteau, registered dietitian and chef, focuses on
recipes for healthy, hip Santa Monica adults 50+. Workshops are
scheduled for Tuesday, November 8th and Tuesday, December 13th,
beginning promptly at 10:30am. Please sign-up in advance at the
Senior Center office.
Self-Healing with Maria Locsin, L.Ac. — Learn how to stay healthy,
ease pain and discomfort, and increase blood flow by pressing specif-
ic body points and having a healthy diet. Caregivers are also wel-
come. Workshops will be Wednesday, November 16th and Wednes-
day, December 21st at 12:30pm. Please sign-up in advance at the
Senior Center office.
Tai Chi/Chi Gong with Shahnaz Baligh — Tai Chi class continues on
Fridays at 1:00pm. Taught in both English and Farsi, this ancient Chi-
nese exercise system trains the body to move in the very best way it
can through the practice of gentle, flowing movements, while simulta-
neously calming the mind. No class on November 18th; join us for the
Health Fair!
Nutrition Advisory Council
Nutrition Advisory Council meetings give older adults the opportunity to
provide feedback on the Los Angeles County grant-funded Senior Nutri-
tion Program (also known as WISE & Healthy Aging Healthy Lunches).
The next scheduled meetings will be: Wednesday, November 30 and
Thursday, December 22nd at 2:00pm at the Wise & Healthy Aging offic-
es, Ken Edwards Center, Second Floor.

Commission for the Senior Community
The City of Santa Monica Commission for the Senior Community is an all
-volunteer Commission appointed by City Council that focuses on the
quality of life for adults 50+ in the city. The Commission makes recom-
mendations to City Council on a wide range of issues relevant to older
adults in Santa Monica and provides educational opportunities to sen-
iors, their families and caregivers.
The Commission meets monthly on the third Wednesday from 1:30pm
to 3:30pm at the Ken Edwards Center, 1527 4th St. The public is invit-
ed to attend. To confirm meeting times, or for Santa Monica residents

If you are 60 or over, join the Healthy Lunches Program for a great tasting, nutritious
lunch each weekday.
Lunch is served at 12 noon, weekdays. Each location is open from at least 10:30am to
1:30pm, allowing time to meet your friends before lunch and socialize afterwards. Reg-
ularly scheduled, monthly visits to each site are made by WISE & Healthy Aging Care
Managers, who are specifically trained to provide support to linking services in the sur-
rounding community

Home Delivered Meals
Meals on Wheels West provides healthy meals
and daily visits 7 days a week for those who are
homebound. If you or someone you know is expe-
riencing short-term or permanent illness or disa-
bility and can’t shop or cook for themselves,
please call (310) 394-5133 between 9:00am and
1:00pm to make arrangements.
Reservations are Required:
If you are 60 or over, and you are registered with the
Healthy Lunches Program, you will need to reserve
your meal one day in advance and then arrive at the
selected location by 11:45am. To reserve your meal,
you must visit or call your selected site one day in ad-
vance between 10:30am and 12:30pm. You must
speak to someone to ensure your reservation—
messages will not be accepted.
We ask that those individuals who reserve a meal
and can’t make it, call to cancel. If you do not, your
future reservation may be denied. This policy must be
strictly enforced as the program incurs the cost for all
meals ordered. The suggested donation for any re-
served Healthy Lunch is $2.50.

Saturday Box Lunches
On Saturdays a box lunch is offered at the Senior
Center at 1450 Ocean Avenue. Lunches will be
provided on a first-come-first-served basis on Sat-
urdays only for enrolled Healthy Lunches Program
participants from 11:00am until 12:30pm. The
suggested donation is $2.50. No lunches will be
served on November 26, December 24 and De-
cember 31st. The Senior Center is closed in ob-
servance of the Holidays.

Blvd., promptly at 8:00am or from the Senior Center at 7:45am.

traffic conditions).
COST: $40.00 per adult/senior, $35.00 per child to 12 years. Tickets include transportation and are available

Senior Transportation Services for Santa Monica Residents
The City of Santa Monica/WISE & Healthy Aging Dial-a-Ride Program is a low cost, shared-ride service offering curb-to-
curb transportation to destinations in Santa Monica. Riders can use the service within Santa Monica for any transporta-
tion purpose. Rides outside of Santa Monica are provided for medical purposes to specific facilities including UCLA Medi-
cal Center, West LA VA Hospital and Kaiser West LA. Shopping trips and other destinations outside of Santa Monica are
also available. Door Through Door service, for those who need help from their door to the van due to mobility issues, or
for special medical procedures that require an attendant, is also available. After hours services are now being provided
for City-sponsored meetings and events. Advance registration is required for all trips. Door Through Door service and
trips to destinations outside of Santa Monica are available only on a limited basis. For more information please call

Access Services is curb-to-curb accessible paratransit transportation within ¾ mile of each bus route or rail line

No Viewers Choice in November and December due to the holidays, but Viewers Choice will return in January.
Cinema Connections:
Generating Discussion Between Young and Old
Over 90 people turned out for each of the previous Cinema Connec-
tions, a free film series sponsored by the Older Adult Task Force and the
City of Santa Monica. Following a screening of UP on October 1st and
Freedom Writers on October 22, participants met in small groups and
discussed the films over pizza. Discussions centered on themes raised
by the films, including relationships between people of different ages
and how the challenges of life as a teen have changed over the years.
There is one more chance to participate in Cinema Connections. The
final film in this series is Young @ Heart and will be shown on Saturday,
November 5th at 2:00pm at the Main Library, 601 Santa Monica Blvd. Coldplay, The Clash and Jimi Hendrix
will never sound the same once you’ve heard a group of senior citizens who thrill audiences with their rendi-
tion of rock songs. We follow the ensemble as they prepare for their latest performance. The Library is wheel-
chair accessible. Big Blue Bus lines 1,2,3,7, 8,9 & 10 serve the library.

Identity Theft Awareness
Come out and learn the latest on identity theft aware-
ness with Diane Gonzalez, Community Engagement
Coordinator with the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investiga-
tion). Identity fraud is the fastest growing crime which
affects millions of victims each year and results in bil-
lions of dollars in losses for consumers, businesses
and financial institutions. Ms. Gonzalez will speak to
the things to watch out for and how to detect potential
theft, fraud and scams when it comes to your identity.

Eye Disease Awareness
Dr. Anika Dewan, D.O. from Sears Optical will be mak-
ing a lunchtime presentation about the importance of
eye care and eye disease awareness at the Senior
Center on Monday, December 19th at noon. After the
presentation, Dr. Dewan and her staff will conduct lim-
ited eye glass inspections, cleanings and adjustments
on a first-come, first-served basis.

The SMC Emeritus Lyric Chorus returns to the Main
