New to the Parish? You’re very welcome. Come and say hello!
Fr John writes… So where were you on the night of the big storm? It
was amazing wasn’t it? I’ve only been on the Island
for two years but people who have lived here all their
lives say they have never experienced anything like
it. It was so powerful. And yet walking out with my
dog the following morning the wind had dropped and
calm had been restored.
It is interesting how we use the language of storms
and calm, of darkness and light to describe our inner
lives. Grief, anxiety, depression, separation, loss,
abandonment, heartache all trigger feelings of
turbulence and darkness. And when we are in such
dark and painful places they seem to permanently
possess us. We imagine that there can never be any
relief. Emotional pain on this scale can sometimes
manifest itself in physical symptoms. There can be a
tendency to identify ourselves too closely with our
emotions but our real self exists at a deeper level
than our emotions. Our emotions can go up and
down but the inner self does not have to go up and
down with them.
There are lessons to be learned. The first is that
emotional storms never last. Just as the calm follows

Sunday of the Year As citizens of our country we are
called to serve the needs of our society
and world. As citizens of the kingdom
we are summoned to render to God
what is God's. Is there anything that is
not God's?
World Mission Sunday This Sunday, the Holy Father invites
all Catholics to contribute to a special
collection for Missio, his official
charity for overseas mission.
World Mission Sunday is your
chance to support missionaries and the
Church in proclaiming the Gospel of
peace to those who suffer around the
world. By supporting Missio, the
Pope’s official charity for overseas
mission, you will be sharing the peace
and love of Christ with all people by
helping everyone in need, regardless
of background or belief. Today, your
prayers and your donation will help a
spirit of peace spread across South
Sudan and around the world. Please
give what you can. Thank you.
Volunteers for Novena refreshments If anyone can help with refreshments
at any of our Novena sessions this
would be greatly appreciated. Thank
you for your support as always.

the storm in terms of the weather, so
too calm inevitably follows the pain
and turbulence in our hearts. In the
Gospels there are two accounts of
storms. In one Jesus remains asleep in
the boat, in the second he walks
towards the terrified disciples from the
very eye of the storm. In both instances
the disciples feel abandoned by him
and he scolds them for their lack of
faith.
This week we have our Novena to
Mary Untier of Knots. She too knows
the pain of sorrow, of suffering,
separation and grief. She witnessed her
Son’s rejection, betrayal, torture and
unjust execution. We can entrust the
knots in our lives, the heartbreak, the
losses and the catastrophes to her in
the knowledge that she also witnessed
the Resurrection.
Books in Polish We have received a request for books
in Polish for the prison library. Do any
of our parishioners have books they
would be willing to donate to the prison
library. Please bring books (in polish) to
the church next weekend. Thank you.
This week we welcome… Bishop Tom Williams, Auxiliary
Bishop of the Archdiocese of
Liverpool, who is here to lead the
Novena to Mary, Untier of Knots on
Sunday afternoon.
Father Kevin Hughes of the Mill Hill
Missionary Society. Father Kevin will
be staying with us for several weeks to
make appeals for the foreign missions
and to visit our faithful ‘red box’
collectors throughout the Island. He
has also kindly agreed to lead two
evenings of our Novena to Mary,
Untier of Knots on Tuesday and
Thursday this week
Novena News Our Novena began on Friday and will
continue until Saturday 28th in St
Mary’s. Everybody is very welcome to
come to all remaining sessions or to as
many as you can manage.
We are hoping (if no computer
glitches) to put each day’s prayers and
hymns on www.manxcatholic.org so
anyone who cannot attend a particular
day will be able to follow the prayers.
Please follow the Novena link on the
website for each day’s prayer content.
If you know of any sick or elderly
relatives or friends who do not have
access to internet please assist them as
best you can to see the Novena
prayers. There is great fellowship
when people unite together to pray a
Novena for all of our intentions.
Each day we will petition Mary,
Untier of Knots, to undo all the knots
in our lives - see centre pages of this
newsletter for more details.
May the Choirs of Angels come to greet;

we will reflect on the ‘Knots’ of
Sickness and Suffering in our
community and will be celebrating the
Sacrament of the Sick at 3.00pm at St
Mary’s led by Bishop Tom Williams.
Transport has been arranged for
those who need it by kind support of
minibus organisers and drivers. Our
sincere thanks to all involved with this.
Alzheimers
This Thursday 26th October Catholic
Women's League will be having as their
guest speaker, Mrs Susan Walker from
the Alzheimer's Society. If a member of
your family is giving cause for concern
and you are worried it may be the onset
of Dementia then please come along.
Mrs Walker will be able to give advice
and information on the condition itself
and how we can help support both
sufferers and carers. There is no charge
but there will be a raffle, the proceeds of
which will be donated to the Alzheimer's
Society. It would help us if you could
contact CWL secretary, Mrs Cecilia
Sharpe (333092 or 672002) so, at Mrs
Walker's request, we may have an idea of
numbers. The talk will be given at the
Columba Catholic Club, Circular Road
and begins at 8.00 p.m.

O Virgin Mary, faithful Mother who
never refuses to come to the aid of
your children;
Mother whose hands never cease to
help, because they are moved by the
loving kindness that exists in your
Immaculate Heart, cast your eyes of
compassion upon me, and see the
snarl of knots that exists in my life, of
my life.
In your hands there is no knot which
cannot be undone.
Most holy Mother, pray for Divine
assistance to come to my aid.

Happy birthday! Last week Father Brian celebrated his
82nd birthday. We wish him many
more years of devoted service. This
week Fr Brian and Fr Leo from
Castletown are travelling to Rome to
visit Canon Philip. Fr Leo is a former
student at the Beda College. We wish
them both a well earned break.
Faith in Focus
Pennies for Heaven The Pharisees and Herodians were
bitter opponents. The Pharisees
favoured Israel's independence as a
religious homeland. The Herodians
supported the Roman occupation. They
both feared Jesus as a troublemaker
and so they made an alliance to try and
catch him out.
The question about taxes in today's
gospel boils down to this: Are you in
favour of Rome or Israel? Whatever he
answered he was sure to step into the
trap. We know what happened: Give to
Caesar what is Caesar's and to God
what is God's.
Besides being a very clever answer it
also points to something much deeper
than the obvious. Jesus is not some sort
of revolutionary who invites his
followers to overthrow the civil
authorities. He recognises their
legitimacy but he alludes to something
beyond the here and now, to the things
of God.
Is there anything that does not belong
to God? Is there any arena of public
interest that belongs only to politicians
and has nothing to do with the divine?
Presumably not, given that the world is
God's and it is God whose design is
stamped upon it.
Nothing weakens the impact of our
faith more than putting it into a neat
religious compartment. Never discuss
religion or politics, they say. They only
say it because they're scared of what
might happen if we do. And so we're
lured into the social convention of
thinking that it's somehow not decent
to wear our religion on our sleeve.
Religion should be a personal matter,
they say. That's because it has
uncomfortable consequences when we
display it in the light of day. When
politicians know that they have
produced legislation that is
questionable, they usually try to
silence religious leaders by claiming
that they should keep religion out of
politics, should stick to hymns and
prayers rather than public
demonstration.
Faith must be the leaven of society,
not one of its side-shows. That's
because the image stamped on our tax
coins may well be Caesar's, but the
image stamped on those who pay the
taxes is unmistakably God's.
Food Bank Parishioners have been very
generous in ongoing food donations
for our local Food Bank. If you can
