Nowadays, youth has become epic. The
thoughts and feelings that surround every young
man or woman have evolved through time and in
this century we encounter and embrace
technology that helps youth to be more unique.
This is why Now Generation concentrates
on giving adolescents an interesting point of view
on topics that are relevant these days.
Unfortunately, there are few young persons
that are fully interested in their world and what’s
happening in it. Adults have to find new ways of
leading teenagers to a good life, but in the end,
it’s their own choice.
Adolescents are surrounded with amazing
opportunities of growing and becoming excellent
professionals in whatever they like, but the
problem is that they like might be dangerous or
not good at all. “Who cares” they say, “We’re just
having fun.” It is okay to have fun! You just have
to do it in a smart way.
This generation is full of surprises and new
ways of living, which will lead humanity to a global
change that will make an impact in society with
each step we take.
The future is in hands of youth and
childhood; and the most important thing is that
these new minds should be educated in a wise
way, hoping that this world becomes a better
place to live, for us and for the ones that are
coming.

ESSAYEverybody loves music, but not
everyone knows it’s meaning. In this
article I will express what music means
to me, what does the music do in our
emotion and how can you really find
good music, depending in the lyric.
What is music for you? I spent a
month searching what music is for me
and what is it for everyone. I couldn’t
find one meaning that really told me
what music is. So, I decided to ask a
musician, and he told me that “music is
a set of rounds and silences which are
structured under certain theoretical
rules to create harmonies and
melodies.” That kind of answer
convinced me.
The emotion that music transmits affects us in a positive or negative way.
Sometimes music helps us say what we don’t know what to tell someone or how
we feel. I may not be a scientific, but this I’m sure about: if you listen to nostalgic
music, it will totally make you sad, and you will probably remember all the bad
things that happened to you or everything that you think it’s wrong. On the other
hand, if you listen to music that is extremely happy, your humor will be like you’ve
been drinking or have just received good news. I actually proved this theory by
listening to my favorite group and all the music that I love: then I switched this
lovely music to a totally depressing one and became all sad.
6
I literally listen to all kind of music, and don’t discriminate any type
of it, although there is music that I can’t stand for a long time. We are
used to hear music in the radio, and the stations we like only transmit
the popular music that famous people create nowadays. I think that this
kind of music is empty: it probably has sense if you download the lyrics
of the songs and study them, finding a meaning in each word, but you
may never know the real story behind each song. These hidden
languages can be find in music.
So tell me: what is music for you? I can explain it in any term you
wish, but if you can see this and read it, you will know that music is the
same thing for me and for you, just in a different way, what music do to
you in your emotion and what these say.

Book Review
“You are mine”
This contrasting story called “You are
mine” involves you completely in the
story, each way the story turns
makes you more interested in the
book.
The story of “You are mine” is
about a psychologist that has a talk
show on radio, and by random
circumstances she gets involved in a
series of murders of young women
that were killed in cruisers.
The genre is suspense, that’s why it’s a very interesting story. The
author is Mary Higgins Clark, the Queen of suspense; she writes in a
very special way that really gets your attentions into the story, it
catches, and makes you feel like you’re part of the story.
The only hint that Susan, the psychologist has to resolve the
murders and catch the assassin, is a turquoise colored ring that has
the inscription: “You are mine” in it, and that the beautiful and young
women were killed in a cruiser around the world.
While the story goes on, more and more hints emerge and the lost
pieces appear to finally resolve the murders and maybe, who knows,
save the life of a new victim.

Literary CriticismRosa de Dos Aromas – Emilio CarballidoThis is a Mexican play, based on Emilio Carballido’s book, which talks about two
women that discover something that changed their lives forever. Both of them were
in a relationship with a man who was on jail. So one day, they went to visit them,
and that was the first time the ladies ever met; so they started talking and found out
that they both were dating the same man!
The plot of the story is that they organized a raffle to use the money to take theman out from jail, but during the days go off, they realized the man doesn’t deserve
to come out from jail, because he was cheating on them, so they decided to use
the money for themselves and have a nice vacations on the beach.
After you read or watched the
play, you will realize that these
situations really happen in real life;
there are a lot of men, and women
that cheat their couples, and
eventually the couple find out, and
after a lot of apologizes, they are
back together again, or sometimes it
is the opposite, the person break up
with their couple and move on with
their lives.
I personally liked EmilioCarballido’s work because it is
realistic; it is based in current
situations that occur nowadays.
This is one of the most performed
play in the world. And according to
many reviews, it is a great staging
with an exceptional cast that is
recommended to any audience.
Check out this cool play!

Breaking new: Obama sets out energy future for less
dependency on oil
President Barack Obama said it was time for America to "get serious" about
its energy demands.
President Barack Obama has vowed to reduce US oil imports byone-third in the next decade.
He said in a speech in Washington that America had to "getserious" about a secure and affordable energy future.
Higher oil prices are threatening to hamper US economic recoveryand there is growing dissatisfaction among car drivers with pumpprices.
Mr. Obama said the US must move towards getting 80% of itselectricity from non-oil sources by 2035.
"We cannot keep going from shock to trance on the issue ofenergy security, rushing to propose action when gas prices rise, then hitting the snooze button when they fall again," he saidduring a speech at Georgetown University.
10
Mr. Obama said that presidents andpoliticians had for years promisedenergy independence throughfinding cleaner and more renewablesources.
Petrol prices in the US have shot up50 cents a gallon this year, reachinga national average of $3.58 a gallonlast week.
"We have to discover and producecleaner, renewable sources ofenergy," Mr. Obama said. "And wehave to do it quickly."
After Mr. Obama's speech,Republican Senate Leader MitchMcConnell accused the Obamaadministration of trying to "lock up"US energy.
He said plans like that which Mr.Obama outlined to developalternative energy in the future didlittle to relieve present high petrolprices.
11
"The guy who's trying to make ends meet wants to know what you'regoing to do for him today, not 24 years from now," he said, quoted bythe Associated Press.
"We need to look elsewhere for our energy. The problem is thatDemocrats don't want us to use the energy we have. It's enough tomake you wonder whether anybody in the White House has driven bya gas station lately."
As well as increasing the use of alternative energies such as biofuelsand making vehicles more efficient, Mr. Obama said the US must raisedomestic oil production.
An Interior Department reportpublished on Tuesday said thatmore than two-thirds of offshoreexploration licenses in the Gulf ofMexico have yet to be acted uponby oil companies.
The department said that the sitescould potentially hold more than 11billion barrels of oil and 50 trillioncubic feet (1.42 trillion cubicmeters) of natural gas.
Mr. Obama also embraced anexpansion of nuclear power, butadded that there would be athorough review of power plants toensure any lessons from the crisisin Japan were learned.
Great DecisionsObama!

I would like to introduce you a little bit into the successful
career of a successful man, who is passionate about his
profession and gives everything until the job is done.
I’m talking about Dr. Gabriel Galvan, a family leader and
foundation, dedicated medical, careful and loving man.
We made some questions about his career, and here’s
what he told us…
15
M: What made you decide to study
this career?
DR: It called my attention right from
the start, and on the other hand, I had
a discussion with a math teacher
once, and that made me not want to
know anything about math or
numbering, and since this career has
nothing to do with numbers or
calculating, I chose it. But what I was
sure about is that what I was going to
start studying, I was going to finish it.
M: How many years have you
exercised your career?
DR: I have done it 32 years by now.
M:At what age did you choose this
career?
DR: At the age of 15.
M:Who or what inspired you to
choose this career?
DR: The conflict I told you about
earlier, and it was the career
everybody wanted to get into.
M: If you hadn’t choose that career,
which one you would’ve liked to
exercise?
DR: I would’ve gone for law.
M: Which has been the most
extreme or difficult case that
you’ve had to treat?
DR: There was a patient infected with
HIV once, and I had the fear of getting
infected by getting accidentally
pinched by a syringe that we had
used on him.
M: Which has been the longest
surgery you have done and how
long did it take?
DR: I have done 10 root canals on the
same patient in one appointment and
it took about 8 hours.
M: Have you ever been interested
in another career or profession
besides endodontic?
DR: Yes, years ago I entered law
school as a listener and also I have
been interested in accounting.
M: Have employment opportunities
increased or decreased in your
field?
DR: They have decreased. When I
started studying back in 1975, they
were only 120 dentists in Mexicali,
now they are around 2500 more or
less.
M: In your professional opinion, do
you recommend your career?
DR: Definitely yes, because it is a
very beautiful and interesting subject
to study, it focuses mainly on the
patient’s health. It is very gratifying to
make people better about their mouth
health, and in my case, healing pain.
M: Thank you for your time Dr.,
have a good evening.
DR: You are welcome.

Tips for making peace with your partner
After an argument
or a fight with your
significant other, you
can feel a little sad and
overwhelmed by the
things that happened. If
you do, pass the
recommendations:
SERVICE
Please allow a few hours or a few moments to calm tempers.
Try to meditate in silence on the seriousness of your offenses before those of your partner.
Analyze the situation and give everything a real value, what is more important? Silly or a misunderstanding or the person you want?
17
Give it time for you to consider whether the failure has been on their side and say with sincerity that bothers you.
At all times keep the respect and the conciliatory tone after the discussion does not make things worse by making jokes or comments in bad taste.
Never use sarcasm or a joke to refer to something meaningful for someone else
When you talk to your partner after discussion and not choose another scenario in which they were when they fought.
Gently remind him that love is the key to overcome all obstacles. Do not be afraid to express your feelings honestly.
Gestures speak louder than words, sometimes when words alone just is a deep and tender embrace. Hug your partner and quietly let him know how much you care.
18
These tips are to calm down the situation during and
after a conflict with someone you love, because many times
in situations like these do not know what to do, try to fix it
with a joke or a comment, but sometimes that just makes it
worse, that why these tips will help guide you so that you
don’t have more conflicts with that person that you care so
much; these tips will also help you let your pride aside and if
you made the mistake, apologize and accept that you were
wrong.

New: Peru ElectionsThe national elections for choosing
president in the country of Peru are
taking part in this moment.
In the Peru elections there are 2 parts;
the first and the second turn.
The 2 strongest contenders for the
presidency are Keiko Fujimori from the
Force 2011 party and the nationalist
Ollanta Humala.
Keiko is daughter of the Peruvian ex-
president Alberto Fujimori.
Most of Peru people are rustic; the
power of the elections is going to be in
the poor people.
Ollanta Humala wants to base his
power (if he wins) in the model of Lula
(Brazil former ex-president).
The 2nd turn of the presidential
elections are going to be in June 5th,
and Humala is up to Fujimori by
approximately 5%. The future of Peru
isn’t going to change much because
the ideas of the strongest contenders
(Humala and Fujimori) are similar to
the ones in the past.

Humor story
In my last vacation, my mom said to me: Wake up! I ran in my
house searching my iPod touch, on the sofa, in my car, refrigerator,
bathroom and at last my sister bedroom, in that moment I saw my mom
and sister talking about one journey. I asked: What journey? My surprise
mom said with excellent one journey for me to Canada, about a camping
for problem guys.
I´m negated this travel because in vacation my friends invited me
to the beach, in San Felipe. In the last moment my parents sent mw to
Canada for 3 weeks. In my arrival saw 2 beautiful girls and asked:
Excuse me, I´m from Mexico and I´m new in the city, can you talk to me
about it, we are from England, and heave going to same camping
25
In the travel for Canada I fall in love with Barbara, the girl
from England, who became my girlfriend in two weeks. I went
back to Mexico in August 13 of 2010 and my mom said: Your
friends are death. I was surprised and asked, why? My mom
laughing said to me: It isn´t true. This is a bad experience from
my life.
Barbara went back to England with a new boyfriend.

Book ReviewJustin Bieber, First Step 2 Forever: My Story
These are the words of Justin’s song called “Up”.Me, and many other people think that’s exactlywhat the world expect from him. His life, hisworld got very big, very fast, and a lot of peoplewanted or waited for him to get lost in it.
This book is about his journey, from singing onthe sidewalks in Ontario, Canada; to performingand showing his appreciation to millions of fansall over the world for making his dream a reality.
He grew up in a small town in Canada, he taughthimself to sing in front of his bedroom mirror andto play guitar, drums and piano. His mom postedhis first videos in the internet, and he said in thisbook that never in his wildest dreams he thoughthe would sell out a huge arena tour. So I think heis not lost in the world after all.
I personally think this book is a window into his world, because it shows us hundreds ofphotographs of him, which no one has ever seen before. Justin Bieber, himself, tells you howhis life was before he joined forces, talent, and ideas with his manager, Scooter Braun, andhe got a record deal with Usher; and who he has become since he had the opportunity toshare his music with the world.
All the people who definitively don’t like him will say that how is it possible that a 17-yearold already has an autobiography. Well, just take a look at his life, he has accomplished somany things, that no one, even him, thought would happened.
This book reflects how his life has changed, since he went from singing on the streets, toposting videos on YouTube, to performing in front of millions of fans, to sold millions ofrecords, to be known world-wide, to write a book, to film his first documentary movie abouthis life. And he is just getting started.

HOW TO…
We students are most likely to have trouble when it comes to
study something by reading it. Unfortunately, that’s what causes us
bad grades. However, there are some very effective study skills that
could help us prepare more properly for tests.
These tips for studying should help your ability to retain
information and success in the fast-paced world of studying for
exams.
1
Avoid listening to music while you study. Otherwise, your attention may focus on what is more interesting; in this
case, the music.2
Turn off your cell phone. Make a deal with your friends to not call you while you are studying. 3
28
Don't study in bed. This is one of the most important study strategies because you need to be alert when
preparing for your exam. If you're in bed, you may fall asleep, and well… you can't study while you are sleeping.
4
Don't stop to read details. Start with doing your reading from the beginning to the end. 5
29
Search for the meaning of unknown words. Read it again, but this time separating the most important ideas of each
paragraph. 6
Summarize what you have read. You will develop your study skills if you're able to summarize what you read
using short and objective phrases.7
Ask yourself: what does this or that mean? If you don't know, study it again, and only stop it when you know
everything that was initially a mystery to you..8
Study for an hour and half, with intervals of 10 minutes.Try to relax or eat a snack during these intervals; relaxing helps you to retain the information during your studying.
9
If you want to sleep, don't study. If you're sleepy, you won't learn half as much as when you're rested.10
Now you can start developing effective study
skills and habits. Good luck on your next
exam!

Survey
Electronic consumerism in teenagers
This generation is known as the
Facebook generation, because
of the constant use of different
electronic devices, this is
common among children andadolescents, but this doesn’tmean that adults do not use
them as well.
Adolescents generate a great
unmeasured consumerism,
because of the excess of energy
waste. The computer was
invented for an easier way to
storage information as well as
processing it, but with the
changes in society and
technologies advances, we have
gave computers a much more
different use, for example ways
of communication and trading
relationships with people around
the world, or just viewing videos
at different websites, we talkabout computers, because it’s
one of the electronic devices with
more demand nowadays and
despite of this, we have many
other different devices like, cell
phones, IPods, Mp3s, etc.
The main purpose for the use ofthese devices it’s not always the
real purpose they were inventedfor; that’s why we made a
survey, to know different aspects
of consumerism in adolescents.
33
012345678
Option A
Option B
Option C
Option D
Given the results of ten adolescents in the ages
between 16 through 18, these are the results of
consumerism:
With this graphic, we can
analyze that adolescents use time
the computer for a longer time than
others electronic devices with
internet access, to be connected to
social networks, creating a lost or
waste of energy in simple
conversations, this is critical,
because most of the adolescents in
our survey, demonstrated that they
own more than 10 electronic
devices, which they keep even
when they are obsolete, instead of
recycling them in the specialize
electronic deposits, for electronic
devices.
The new generation of
Facebook has given us lots of thing
to be grateful for and that help us in
our daily life, but has also created a
self dependent attitude to this
gigantic gamma of devices, that are
given to us so easily; but always
with high prices, that’s why
electronic devices have its
advantages and disadvantages,
they are perfect for information, but
remember that everything in excess
is terrible, because until what point
are we willing to gate, for more fast
information?, until we ended with all
energy?, or until we intoxicate our
planet with more wasting?, that why
the Facebook generation needs to
stand up and realize priorities, and
be realistic about what is more
important, and to end with all this
consumerism and electronic waste,
for our own sake.

Bullying is a form of abuse. It involves repeated acts over
time attempting to create or enforce one person's (or group's)
power over another person (or group), thus an "imbalance of
power".
Studying the problem I decide to interview Professor Lourdes
Aidee Perez, who studied sociology and she will clear us this
trivial subject.
35
NG: What is the impact on
young people when they
become victims of “bullying”?
LP: I believe that the impact has
more to do with their self-
esteem, as opposed to physical
consequences.
NG: Do you believe in this
institution there are cases of
“bullying”?
LP: Personally, I have not
noticed any cases, or I have not
observed or I do not know to
observe, but I imagine there
could be some time of
psychological aggression,
judged by listening to the way
students use deceptive words to
refer to each other.
NG: What are the cases of
“bullying” that occur
frequently at any institution
similar of CETYS?
LP: Psychological bullying, due
to the comments, offenses that
are made jokingly on the daily;
the possibility of someone
actually feeling offended by the
joking comments exists, even
when they stay silent on the
matter.
NG: What is the most serious
case of bullying that there
emotional in these
institutions?
LP:I do not know or have
listened of any case.
NG: Does the family
environment have any
influence on the bullies?
LP: Definitely. Bullies are people
that are treated just the way they
treat their victims.
NG: What long- term
consequences might be
presented in believed that as
the bully and the victim?
LP: The victim might end up
bullying someone else in any
period during their lives, and the
bully might also find someone
stronger than him, ending in him
being hurt and seeking for help,
or he will just keep going
through life as someone
pretentious, offending people left
and right thinking that’s the
correct thing to do.
36
NG: Do parents participate to
solve that violence problem
among their children?
LP: The parents do not know
acting of their children within a
hall classes, commonly we when
we are students, we have a
personality in the school and
another one in house, and the
students do not recognize or think
that it is normal that they are
some in his house, others in the
school, when they leave
celebration, and others with the
grandparents; it is normal, but
when the parents they face which
the children in the halls classes
are doing until seems to them
incredible, because his son “is not
thus”, and every time we see that
more parents know except acting
of their children beyond their
house, are becoming experts to
have multiple personalities
perhaps according to its
conveniences, although always it
has been thus, but now it can
analyze of that form.
NG: How the phenomenon of
bullying affected youth recent
years?
LP: I think these reactions have
always existed, however, lately
we have named them; analyzing
them is a new fad. It arrived here
thanks to Spain, but any person,
who has ever assisted to school,
at any time, will be able to tell you
about this one kid who used to hit
others, and another kid who
would go offending everyone.
Violence has always existed, the
only difference is nowadays we
analyze it, so it may seem that
this problem suddenly surfaced.
This is not the case.
NG: Do the teachers know how
to identify the case?
LP: Personally, I have a hard time
differentiating whether the whole
offending game is done in a
joking manner or it’s something
serious. Using the internet,
people say a lot of dumb things,
and I do not know if someone is
being hurt by these comments
and staying silent because “even
if I'm hurt, it’s still part of the
game“.
NG: Do they help the students
with problems of bullying?
LP: It is better that the
psychologists help them.

NOSTALGIA
I remember when I arrived to my house and started do my
homework, I used to have all the afternoon only for me, it was
the 90’s, but the best in that decade were the cartoons, how can
I forget it? I grew up watching them with that.
41
First of all, the channels
like Nickelodeon, Cartoon
Network and Fox Kids, these
three channels were the best,
I swear to God. Actually, the
best of these was that they
had the greatest series like:
Kablam, Animaniacs, Rocko’s
Modern Life, Doug, etc.
All of these cartoons
have something special, like
the typical story that you think
won’t help you in any given
moment, but they ended up
doing so. That way, you will
remember every story or what
the cartoon was about.
We always wanted to be like them, even those that were only
marketing. Your parties, the decoration of your room, and how to
forget all you ever wanted to have the newest game, whether it was
Pokémon or Digimon.
I can’t explain why this cartoon’s were the best but if you ever
watched them, and grew up like me you will understand, even more
because they were created with great imagination.

Purchase and sale of exotic
animals
Human greed leads to self-destruction, the
environment is balanced and even the smaller
links that form the balance of life are
important, if one of these links is removed,
nature demands it. Therefore it is considered
important to know the risks involved the
extinction of an animal, such as lack of control
in the food chain and excess of other species,
perhaps the illegal sale of endangered
animals have a monetary consequence, but
the sacrifice is not comparable to the years of
damage that will cause the extinction of any
specie.
Why do people smuggle animals? The
main product they provide is skin, the oil,
food, pets, among other things, however,
species are part of us, our world and need,
the hard materialism does not justify the
suffering of animals. The issue must be
analyzed, that way the society will know how
the purchase and illegal sale of animals
affects, the reasons, consequences, risks and
preventive measures to stop this problem. To
know the abuse suffered by animals to be
materialized and deprived of their freedom
away from their natural habitat. To publish the
abuse and conditions that hold them, likewise
know the health consequences can be
triggered by introducing exotic animals to
urban areas.
Raising issues that could potentially occur
if a specie disappear completely, with respect
to the ecological balance and enhance the
care of animals in general.
Mexico plays an important role in thisactivity because it’s one of the five nations
with the greatest diversity of wildlife on the
planet, and because of its vicinity to the
United States, which is the main importer and
exporter of wild plants and animals in the
world.
There are many species whose ranges or
size of their populations in the country have
declined dramatically, threatening their
biological viability throughout its natural
habitat due to factors such as the destruction
or drastic modification of habitat,
unsustainable harvesting, disease or
predation, among others.
At some point there would be no animalsto see in the jungles and forests, you’ll just
have pictures and descriptions of what they
were, what they did, how they behaved, how
they sound and what benefits they brought. It
also affects food webs and species adapt totheir environments, if you don’t have animals,
you don’t have plants, and if you don’t have
plants you don’t have humans.
It is expected by this research to inform
the society of Mexicali why they are interestedin buying exotic animals, why it’s an illegal
activity and the manner in which these
animals are treated. If you manage to publish
the problem thus citizens will seek faster
action by the authorities and individuals to
achieve the arrest of this illegal activity.
“Animals are living
beings, they also
feel and think”45
The animals will be highly benefited as
they are forced to leave their natural habitat
and adapt to a new environment (in this case
Mexicali BC one of the hottest cities), many of
these animals in the course of their place of
origin to die city indefinitely and suffer from
physical and mental abuse. These animals
are not only subject to certain death when
captured, but they risk being in unsanitary
conditions and being surrounded by people
who only want them for decoration.
Those exposed to disease are not only
exotic animals, just as citizens to stay in touch
with them without any knowledge of what kind
of virus could bring from their place of origin.
Animals are living beings, they also feel and
think. Many people ignore the problem, others
completely unknown and others are part of
this activity.
Are there good enough reasons for the
purchase and sale of animals to ignore the
physical and mental development of these
animals?
Don’t ever purchase exotic animals!

Interview
Francisco Monge Macías is a fifteen year old student of Junior High School. He has won a Scientific Contest by creating an organic gas provider made of organic trash (fruits, eggs,
vegetables), or has he calls it “Biogas”.
47
NG:What is an organic gas
provider?
FM: Well, the organic gas is an
energetic and renewable
resource, which consists on
having a mobile or permanent
deposit where you put the organic
waste, like fruit, meat and
even waste water drainage, all
this is sealed. And in weeks it
creates a gas, called methane
used for cooking and electricity.
NG: How does it work?
FM:Through anaerobic combustio
n, which is the process that is
done with particles in the
absence of oxygen, it is
recommended that there is not
much oxygen because
it will take more time to the gas to
create itself. It also depends on
the temperature; it can’t be over
40 degrees nor 10 degrees
because the particles won’t do
their job.
NG: How useful can it be?
FM: It is very useful; it can be
useful in the kitchen, or to
illuminate buildings using
mechanical energy. It has
environmental advantages and
reduces CO2 emissions.
NG: How big is the impact that
it causes on the environment?
FM:As this impact, it’s simply the
emission of CO2,
which makes the hole in
the ozone layer. It
reduces deforestation because
many people still use firewood for
cooking. And it does not
really have an
impact on society because it is
not known, but people are already
using these biogas digesters in
South America and in almost the
entire European region.
NG: What made you built this
organic gas provider and how
hard was building it?
FM: Well I didn’t invent it; it was
already invented time ago. We
saw a documentary about Turkey,
where they used this. You can
create them on your own; you just
get a PVC paint can and fill it with
everything, then seal it. It’s
reachable for people, everyone
cane built one. If you only build a
biogas digester for you, it will be
small. But if you want it for whole
communities then it must be
something big.
48
NG: Do you think this could be
useful in the future?
FM: Yes, there are statistics that
say that the 20% of energy could
be used in Europe. And it’s only
matter of raising awareness and
installing your own biogas
digester. The CFE is not allowed
to take it away, because it’s for
personal use.
NG: Do you want to improve the
design or function of this gas
provider?
FM: No, because it has the same
function. I think we can make
some changes in the design, to
make it look better, but still it
makes the same thing.
NG: How important was the
support of your teammates in
the realization of this project?
FM: My
teammates really brought a lot;
one of them gave us the idea
because he had already seen
something in TV. We helped him,
and got the first place because we
made this project known. It needs
to be even more known, people
need to tell other people about the
wonderful resource that the
biogas is.
NG: How does it feel to win
such an interesting
competition?
FM: First of all, you feel happy.
Not because you’re representing
your institution, but because
you’re representing what you want
and the fact of making everyone
understand your project, and that
everyone place it first. In this
case we reached the town stage,
but in reality everyone should
know this project.
NG: In what way do you think,
this type of contest can help
young people?
FM: To inculcate them that not
everything is solved, we have
problems and we need to stop
thinking about improving only in
technology, we need to think
about saving us first. We need to
use these technologies, the
natural gas, or the Biodiesel.
Thanks for your time and valuableinformation,
Francisco!

INTERVIEWING
AN
ENGINEERThe purpose or objective for this interview is to know the level of consumerism in an Internet café, asking engineer Ernesto Ayón,
52
NG: Which is the rage of age of your
clients?
EA: It depends, because we have clients
form every age, but mostly, between 13
through 30
NG: How many computer doe you have
in your establishment?
EA: 20
NG: Besides computer, what other
electronic devices does your business
manages?
EA: Air conditions, speakers, printers,
scanners and webcams.
NG: Which devices do your clients use
the most?
EA: Computers
NG: Who consumes the most, men or
women?
EA: Men
NG: Why do you think that?
EA: Because men are more irresponsible
that women, and they need to get done
what they didn’t finished or printed.
NG: In average, how long does a
person spends in using one of your
computers, per day?
EA: Above 1 or 2 hours.
NG: In winter, how much is the
monetary amount your business
generates in electricity?EA: You can´t be certain, because it
changes, it depends of the uses of the
machines and also the demand from the
uses, of course is a lot less than summer.
NG: Which are the measures that you
use to not waste electricity?EA: I don´t really take any, maybe just
turning off the machines when we close, but we don´t even unplug them.
NG: Who often do you change your
electronic devices, for new ones?
EA: Every year, because we are a public
services, and they get damage more often
than a regular computer at home.
NG: How many computers do you
throw out per year?
EA: As I all ready told you it depends id
the computer broke down, stop working or
something, if not we keep them, but
usually about five.
NG: Do you fix computers or just rent
them?EA: Yeah, we can fix them, but that´s not
our primary service.
NG: What do you do when you get rid
of any electronic device?
EA: Well, in general, if we couldn’t fix the
problem, we send it to someone who
could, and we sell them or just never pick
them up.
NG: Do you have any acknowledge of
electronic deposits?
EA: As bank accounts or something, Idon´t really know what they are.
I don´t know any deposits here in
Mexicali, I can bet they don’t exist here in
Mexicali, because no one would use
them.

Without a doubt, one of the most amazing and effective discoveries in the
world, was produced by a man named Alexander Fleming; this intelligent doctor was
a Medicine Nobel Prize winner because of the detection of a really world-changing
substance: penicillin.
Back in the times of World War I, the soldiers and anyone involved in fights and
military conflicts were severely affected by infections caused by the wounds they got,
producing them an inevitable death. Even if it wasn’t because of that, people would
die by a cold or any other minor disease.
54
Today, the use of penicillin
and other antibiotics are
common place. The various
antibiotics are used to treat a
number of what are now
common diseases and to
prevent the onset of infections
when our skin, our first barrier
to fight off disease, is somehow
broken through a simple cut or
a more serious wound. It is
something that we all take for
granted, today. However, many
diseases and simple wounds
that are so easily treated today
because of the availability of
antibiotics have not always
been available. Antibiotics are a
relatively recent discovery and
the first practical one, penicillin,
was not available until the early
1940s.
That’s how an English
doctor changed everything. We
are all undoubtedly familiar with
the story of penicillin. In all
introductory text books, in the
life science, the story always
tells how penicillin was
discovered accidentally, at St.
Mary's Hospital, in London, by
Dr. Alexander Fleming. Fleming
was examining a culture
of Staphylococcus aureus, a
pathogenic bacterium on which
he was doing some research,
when he noticed that it had
become contaminated by a
species of Penicillium.
Although, the species of the
mold was unknown to Fleming,
at the time, he did observe that
it was inhibiting the bacterial
growth. Fleming wrote a paper
on his findings in 1929; the rest
is history.
However, it was never that
simple. Such a short summary
really doesn’t tell you the entire
story, and in this case, says
that Fleming's discovery of
penicillin was one of chance
and does not credit other
people, who were just as
deserving or more so in the
development of penicillin for
medicinal use.
Discoveries in science are
rarely made by chance. Often,
it involves knowledge that has
been gained over a long period
of time so that all discoveries,
today, have come about
because we have "stood on the
shoulders of giants that have
come before us."

ESSAY
The past is just a prologue. – William Shakespeare
On the few space that
some lines can give me, I am
able to express my deepest
thoughts and feelings. That’s
how I now talk about a topic that
has no beginning and no end:
the time.
This word has more than
15 definitions in a dictionary, and
one of them is short but
meaningful: the time is the
length of things that will always
change. Every meaning comes
with a bit of sadness and, with
every minute, a new valuable
experience.
Time comes in different
directions and moments, but its
one and only purpose in to go
on, move forward. However,
what is it? That’s my question.
The world is not the time; it’s just
a small part of it, of everything
that already existed. We are not
the time either, we’re no more
than one tiny twinkle of it; we’re
what won’t exist later, and that’s
my problem: an irrational fear for
what we all know as the future.
Future… what is coming.
Lots of people try to figure it out
with cards, the stars or assumed
premonitions. This people are
actually afraid of the future!
They don’t want to live “not
knowing” and just wait to see
what happens, becoming prays
of the time. Impatience comes
with waiting, but anguish makes
itself present when we feel time
passing. It’s never how we want
it to be.
Since elementary school,
we have known that humanity
has created mechanisms that
can measure time, which leads
us to calendars and systems
that give us the impression of
having certain control over it,
when our minds cannot embrace
the giant concept and great
complex of this tiny word.
One of the ways of
seeing time is believing that it
is part of a cycle. The human
being is someone that needs
company, and time makes us
the gift of coincidences,
marches and encounters that
let us form bonds of affection.
We live with them, love them
and enjoy them, but the
moment ends and time
decides it’s enough, taking
them away from us, not
necessarily through death,
but because everyone has a
limited time in our lives, they
have to go someday; the
cycle ends and finds its way
to begin again.
However, time is
powerless when it comes to
little details that experiences
give us and motivate us to
enjoy every day and treasure
it, forever.
This day is full with
yesterdays, and I’m here
because I believe in all the
possibilities. The beginning is
here and I know that my
choices will not stop me from
living adventures.

On October 1996, I stopped being only child to abruptly change
into “the big sister”. From that moment, my life changed in all the
ways possible, and on May 1999, it changed even more. Starting with
the fact that I never liked the fact of having my spotlight stole.
To gain back all that attention, I used to hide my brother when
they came to visit him. One of those times, I was so jealous and mad,
that I stood in the front of his door and told everyone he was asleep
and that they shouldn’t wake him up. It worked for a few minutes, but
later on, they moved me. I never gave up, and in several occasions I
applied the same technique.
CREATIVE
58
When my little sister arrived, I was used to
live with a little brother; but just one. I must admit
I was nervous, but also excited. I thought I could
use my sister as a new toy; she was an
adventure to me. I even got her flowers and one
of my favorite teddy bears. Time passed, and the
three of us grew happy. We loved to play in our
backyard and imagine being pirates or any other
fictitious character.
One of the most memorable times we
passed as brothers was, when we got a
trampoline as a Christmas gift. By that time I was
about eight years old, my brother was about five
years old and my sister was about two years old.
Weeks passed, and on our last winter brake
weekend (which was the only weekend we had
to play without time limit) I got the greatest idea I
have ever had at my young age. In the
trampoline that my parents gave us, there were
many poles holding a safety net, so we wouldn’t
fall off the trampoline while jumping. In one of the
corners of my backyard, was a big tree, and it
was perfectly arranged in diagonal direction to
one of the poles that held the net. I decided to
tell my brothers the master plan I had in mind.
We went for some ropes my dad had stored;
we cut a blanket in long strips and grabbed all
my mother’s belts. With simple knots, we made a
giant rope made of diverse materials. I arranged
and tied the “special rope” to the pole and my
brother tied the other side to the tree. The rope
crossed the whole backyard, because my idea
was to create a Tyrolean crossing just like the
one I watched on TV.
59
I didn’t know if my plan would work
and my brother was scared of heights
and between both we decided that the
most suitable for performing this feat
for the first time, was indeed, my little
sister. We took advantage of her
enthusiasm and naivety, and we
covered her with a lot of blankets on
her elbows and knees to “avoid
fractures” if she fell; we also put a hat
as a helmet. My little sister threw
herself fearless. She didn’t even make
it halfway the Tyrolean crossing, when
the ropes fell off with my sister
hanging from them.
My brother and I jumped off the
trampoline to see if she was all right;
besides make her stop crying,
because if she did, my mother would
scold us. When we arrived to the
crime scene, it was too late; my sister
was crying her lungs out and grabbed
her knee constantly because her pain
was really big. My mom rushed out
the house and into the backyard to
help her and put her tons of ointments,
and home remedies to make her knee
pain stop. Fortunately, my sister just
got a big bruise that ran thru her entire
leg; if she had broken her leg,
I would’ve never forgiven myself.
When my dad came arrived home and
saw my little sister with that significant
bruise, in that precise time I knew the
scold was going to be the worst one
I’ve was ever going to have in my
short life.
First of all, my mother told me that
I was the oldest sister, so I was
supposed to take care of my little
brothers. Of course she took away all
my dolls and teddy bears. What hurt
me the most was when she told me
that I was not allowed to play with
them in the rest of the winter break;
because every time I played with
them, they “magically” got hurt or hit
by something. My dad gave this long
speech about “solidarity” and he told
me that I needed to support my little
brothers, not harming them; although
harming or hurting them was never my
intention, it always happened, but it
was never because I wanted it to
happen; besides they always had fun
in the end. I was really naive and I just
wanted to have some fun with my little
brothers.
I will never forget that, the same
night the accident happened, my two
little brothers came into my room to
tell me they were going to be
supportive with me, and that they
were going to take the same
punishment as me. That moment was
when I realized the true meaning of
solidarity; something that really
mattered among my family. A long
speech was not necessary, only my
two little brothers assuming the guilt of
my mischief with me.

There’s no need to search the world for a hero to
come, you have plenty of unrecognized heroes
around you. Your dad, your grandfather, a
policeman, a tacoman, whoever, can be a hero. A
hero is made from what’s on his heart, not for
the size of his musles.
As an amazing example we have Amos Rangel, a
firefighter from Mexicali, Baja California whose
actions have saved many lifes from cats to a
whole family. Let’s see what he said.
NG: Why were you interested on
being a firefighter?
AR: Because it is a way to serve the
community, helping others fills you with
satisfaction.
NG: What’s the greatest experience
you’ve had?
AR: Precisely that, being able to help
people, from something as insignificant
as a person arrives at the station
asking for some help to an emergency,
fire or rescue.
NG: What’s the worst experience
you’ve had?
AR: There have been several, the loss
of someone in an emergency is not a
very pleasant experience, however we
must face it.
NG: How many fires do you fight per
month?
AR: We attend fires, serve gas leaks,
gasoline spills and anything that
involves an emergency. We are 3 shifts
of 24 hours, in 3 days there are 3
different people. That's why each of us
serve 4, 5 residential fires, but there’s
work every day.
NG: What are the most common
reasons of fires?
AR: It has much to do with neglect; it
frequently has to do with gas
installations and be poorly electrical
installations. Something very common
in Mexicali is that the stove usually has
a material that are flexible hoses, which
are very comfortable, because with
them it is very easy to move the stove,
but we recommend that the safest thing
for a gas installation is copper tubing.
We have many situations where this
hoses have small gas leak, they break,
etc.
“Behind the flames”
61
NG: How and where did you prepare
to be a firefighter?
AR: At first I came here to take a
courses and training, then I took a one-
week course at the University of Texas,
it was a great experience. There are
people who go year after year and now
they have a lot of preparation.
NG: What does a firefighter do? Is it
dangerous?
AR: Any jobs where movements of
tools are necessary represent risk. I
have seen masons who climb really
high poles, but when one is aware of
what you are doing it becomes less
dangerous. If I do something that I
know I’m prepared then I will know
what to do and what not to do.
NG: Was being a firefighter as you
expected?
AR: The funny thing is that as a child I
did not have this virtue or that desire, I
was never inclined to these things. I
can say that being a firefighter was a
gift from God, being able to do
something, or engage in something for
the community it is a unique
experience.
There are moments of boredom, anger,
tired of seeing the faces of my
colleagues, but when there is an
emergency and we get into the truck, it
feels as if the tiredness, the boredom,
never existed, because of the
satisfaction that we have for being able
to do something worthwhile.
Sometimes you meet someone who
reminds you your purpose.
NG: What do you love about your
job?
AR: Having the power to do something
for others, for me, is awesome.
NG: What would you say or
recommend to those who want to be
firefighter?
AR: To ask themselves why they want
to be firefighters? If you want to save
lives you must become a doctor
because they save lives, being a
firefighter means to serve others.
Thanks for yourtime!

The Last Song
Based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks, The Last Song is a
heartwarming movie that tells the story about a teenager who livesin New York with her mother and brother, and went to his dad’shouse in southern beaches to spend summer vacations. Herrelationship with her dad wasn’t so good, they had a lot of issues,
and her dad was trying to restore that relationship they once had.
But it is so difficult for a dad trying to communicate with a
rebellious daughter, so he uses that one thing they both have in
common; music.
68
This amazing story also involves
summer romance that may or may
not last forever. This girl decided shewasn’t going to Julliard, the famous
art school in New York, because
since her parents divorced, she saidshe wasn’t going to play music ever
again. But one day, she discoveredthat her dad was sick, and didn’thave too much time. So her father’sdisease and her summer romance
made her have a second thought.
This great film, based on a novel,
involves music, romance, drama, life-
changing decisions, break ups,
reconciliations, and a lot of tears.
The Last Song has an extraordinary
cast, Miley Cyrus, Greg Kinnear,
Kelly Preston, Liam Hemsworth, and
more amazing actors that made an
excellent job.
I personally, loved this film, I loved
the plot, the actors, locations, I loved
the story in general.
So, if you want to shed a tear and
enjoy a good film, watch this breath-
taking film, The Last Song.

Every 4 years a marvelous
event takes place in the
American continent: The
Panamerican Games. This
multi-sport event represents
the dreams, efforts, sacrifices,
hopes and lifes of the athletes.
The names of
“Panamerican” comes from the
suffix Pan that means great
and American, referring to the
continent’s names.
The Panamerican Games
include all of the Olympic
Sports and some sports that
aren’t included in the
Olympics.
In this magnum event there
are 3 countries that are always
fighting for being the top
medalist, The Panamerican
Champion: USA, Cuba and
Brazil.
Almost always, (if not
always) USA dominates the
Games, followed by Cuba, and in
3rd place Brazil. Bit this time,
things could give an instant
change, because this
Panamerican Games (Oh yes!)
are going to be held in our
country Mexico, in the city of
Guadalajara.
This is our moment, we are
the held country, we can do the
change and scale places to be in
the top 4 or even get to the top 3
of the medal table.
Since it is a big event, it
needs a lot of people and effort
to make it a big shot; voluntaries,
spectators, sponsors, obviously
athletes, trainers, and everyone
that could help to realize it.
The last Panamerican Games
were held in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil, and the ones in 2003,
were held in Santo Domingo,
Dominican Republic. In 1999 the
Games were held in Winnipeg,
Canada. The first Panamerican
Games were held in 1951.

It was a typical evening in the
emerging Germany in an era of
war, death and slavery to the Jews,
but as expected my classmates
and I could not see this majestic
event of nature by being locked into
the abominable concentration
camps created by Hitler.
I remember that particular
moment, as if it was yesterday, that
day I met who would become my
best friend, that moment was just a
little ball of hair that somehow had
managed to sneak away from the
soldiers, picked it up and knew that
would change my life completely,
there was a spark between the two
that caused a bit of warmth and
satisfaction to know that would not
be alone, because from that
moment I would have it, I mean my
dog Lemmy.
After several years the war
was over, Lemmy and I managed
to leave the camps I was only 16
years and that dog who had been
in my hands now 2 years old was
so much owed have someone all
these years to talk to, but knew he
did not talk to me and tell me what
we should do in a country so
destroyed without food, clothing
and a place to live, but what
counted was that if my
unconditional friend Lemmy which,
whatever happened would not
leave me alone.
It took thirteen long years of
hard struggle; I with 29 years of
age did not have the same
condition to continue fighting for
our freedom the Jews trying to find
that hope that would give our
people the equality they had lost in
World War II.

Lemmy with 15 years of age,
she weighed more and more
walking, he looked old and
malnourished dog like me, his eyes
did not notice that life with which he
took in the horrific concentration
camps, his whole life had happened
to me in many struggles trying to
find peace of our nation, was a
symbol, a lucky charm that always
took me everywhere he went, he
was my inseparable friend.
Lemmy, that ball of fur I had
ever had with me, my best friend,
that he came to change my life and
helped me out of those areas where
millions of Jews died, is dead.
The day my country would
sign a treaty with all nations to be
treated the same, those fights that
Lemmy and I had one day together
looking to see freedom of our
people, was the day that Lemmy
said goodbye to life.
Because friendship does not
decide the religion, culture, color or
race but the bond between people.
Lemmy died, but his soul lives in my
heart, I am now a fundamental part
of the General Assembly of Human
Rights to fight for our freedom of
speech, but now I have what I never
had those terrible years.
I still remember my dog
Lemmy and I repeat the whole
world "No matter If your friend is an
animal, love and friendship can
break the barriers of
communication, " my 92-year-old
Lemmy's story has been around the
world in different languages so I
hope to die with me again after all
these long years, but I love life I
cannot wait to see him again.

A few weeks ago I had an
experience I’ve never had before. I
went to a dancing contest in Mexico
City. Since I was eleven I started
taking classes of Polynesian
Dances, specifically Hawaiian and
Tahitian dancing. At first sight, It
seem really hard and exhausting,
and honestly I did not like it. I
wanted to return to my swimming
classes; I had just entered to the
official swim team and I was really
excited. My mom wasn’t, because
she thought I needed something
“girly” and “delicate”.
So there I was, in a
class I didn’t like. The time passed
and I was about to have my first
dance presentation in an
auditorium. I wasn’t that excited, I
was just nervous. When I stepped
in the stage and felt the light on my
face and all the attention just for
me, that was the time I started liking
Polynesian Dances.
I kept dancing, and my
love for this dance kept growing, I
also kept learning more and more;
and of course improve my moves
and my dancing technique. Just
when I was moved into the
advanced group, my teacher and
founder of my school called me to
tell me one of the best news I’ve
ever had heard in my life: “You were
selected to participate as a member
of the school’s representative
group, and we are going to Mexico
City to a National Contest called:
“Ori Tahiti 2011”. Do you want to
come?” My answer of course, was
yes. I was so excited, and in that
moment I never thought how hard
this was going to get.
At first, the rehearsals
where only two days a week; later
we started, rehearsing the seven
days of the week. Monday thru
Friday, it was only about an hour
and a half, and on weekends we
practiced 2 hours. It all changed a
month before the contest; we
practiced 2 or 3 hours per day. It
was really exhausting and hard to
keep up, our teacher was behaving
extremely tight and perfectionist.

We spent a lot of money in
Airplane tickets, costumes and on our
hotel. We organized a “Luau Party” to
raise money; we invited a lot of people
and made a special dance
presentation.
On march 18th, we arrived to
Mexico City we got ready and the next
day, we went straight to the
gymnasium where the contest would
take place. In the morning, the little
girls were contesting, as group and as
soloists. We only had two girls
contesting as soloists. One of them
won the 3rd place Nationally in her
category. When the afternoon came,
the real contest was about to take
place. First the school’s representative
soloists participated and two of them
won 2nd place in their category.
Suddenly the group contest was
taking place, and we were getting
ready to step in that “stage”. We were
really excited, but also really nervous.
We were all wondering if this travel,
this whole sacrifice of time and
everything that we had done would be
worth it. We danced with our hearts
instead of our feet. We gave it all on
that stage and went back to wait for
the results. We were really nervous.
The first award was for the best
costume, and we won it; we were
really excited, but we needed more,
that was not enough. Then they said
category by category, and in all the
categories we had participated, we
won. We got a total of 7 prizes,
including the “Best Dancing Group
Prize”. Five of them where 1st place,
and two of them, where 2nd and 3rd
place.
We got a total of 10 prizes for the
school. We came back and we shared
our experience and joy with our
families, knowing that all that we did
was completely worth it.
