Johnson, moved west from Little Rock, Arkansas and attended the University of Washington Law School. Upon graduation, he was approached by Jack Tanner about reviving the Seattle Chapter of the NAACP. Between 1959 and 1964, Johnson served as president of the local chapter, also served the national NAACP until 1995. As President of the Seattle NAACP, he and other community leaders organized the 1963 protest march for jobs. Some 700 demonstrators participated in the march in downtown Seattle. Johnson assisted with the creation of 19 freedom schools during the boycott of Central Area schools in 1966 and led a 500-person demonstration for open housing. Their sit-in at the City Administration building helped to pass the Open Housing Ordinance in 1968 and the formation of the Human Rights Com- mission. Johnson arranged the mechanism for providing bail for protesters who were arrested and frequently provided representation pro bono. His legal support is considered the backbone of the civil rights movement in King County. In 1969, Johnson was appointed Seattle Municipal Court Judge where he served until 1980. The following year, he was appointed to the King County Superior Court by Governor Dixie Lee Ray. Johnson served as Presiding Judge of the Superior Court from 1990 to 1993. He retired from the bench in 1998. Johnson is the recipient of numerous awards including the Outstanding Judge of the Year Awards from the Washington State Bar Association, Washington State Trial Lawyers Association and Seattle-King County Bar Association. He is also past President of the American Judge’s Association that’s composed of some 1600 judges. He is also the founder of the Charles V. Johnson Seattle Youth and Law Forum, an annual event that educates community youth, and parents on the best ways to interact with law enforcement and help build a better police/community relations.
