19 Pearson St, Charlestown NSW 2290PO Box 2321 Dangar, NSW 2309P (02) 4961 0310 Sorry Sochi, I just couldn't get

interested in your Games

Hands up those who didn’t watch a single second of the Winter Olympics?

My hand has to go up as I just couldn’t generate any enthusiasm in switching over even though a lot of the events were on at a reasonable viewing hour.

In saying that, I thought Channel Ten/Southern Cross did their best to promote the coverage via several forms of media.

I have to say though that I have the greatest respect for the athletes who competed in Sochi. I can’t manage to take even one step while wearing ice skates let alone ski down a mountain, so they deserve plenty of credit for the very real risks they take every time they step out to train or compete.

It had nothing to do with the fact that Australian athletes weren’t realistic medal chances in a lot of events, it's more that a sport needs to have a ball involved for me to be really interested.

Rugby league is at the top of my list, with cricket a close second. Rugby union and soccer are on the next rung, but they are a fair way below league and cricket on my interest scale though.

There has to be no rugby league on any channel for me to consider union and soccer. The excep-tion is if the Jets are playing. Local teams playing virtually any sport will get my attention.

And yes, in my opinion, it should be called 'soccer' and not 'football'. Football in the Hunter means rugby league. I know soccer is played in

about five million countries around the world and they all call it football, but we don't have to follow.

I generally consider myself a sports fanatic, but thinking about it now, my interests in this field really are quite narrow.

I do watch a fair amount of the Summer Olym-pics, though. I think this is mainly due to the greater hype and publicity surrounding athletes in the athletics and swimming.

I mean, there's no way any sporting fan would miss the chance to see Usain Bolt in action or to watch our numerous Aussie swimming champi-ons stick it to the Americans.

Just on the Auckland Nines tournament - I thought the quality of football was outstanding. I initially had concerns that it would be too much like Sevens rugby union, but the extra two players seemed to keep it more like a real league match.

There would not be a person in the world who would swap places with Leeza Tracey Ormsby at the moment.

She is the New Zealand citizen, living in Sydney, who was arrested in Bali after drugs were alleg-edly found in her villa.

She has denied any knowledge of the drugs, but faces one hell of a time getting out of this mess.

I know Bali is a beautiful, relaxing place and 99.99% of Australian tourists visit without inci-dent and have a great time, but it sure does make me think twice about heading over there.

Rugby league is at the top of my list

T he Lynch’s Prawns site saga rolled on last week, with residents opposed to the latest development proposal given

the opportunity to air their grievance to owners, Newcastle City Council.

The proposed development will see the existing structures on the Wharf Road site demolished, to make way for a new four-storey residential apartment block.

Opponents described the design as a “trumped-up sardine can on steroids,” and claimed Council does not have the legal right to sell the land as it is part of the foreshore parkland and that the design does not comply with Council’s own planning controls.

“If this were a private developer they would be laughed out of the Council Chamber,” Bruce Wade of the Honey-suckle Residents Association (HSRA) said. “We ask that Council refuse the DA and return the site to the parkland.”

Many of the residents who have opposed the development have done so on the grounds that it obscures their harbour views.

The HSRA’s submission to Council states that the development will “unrea-sonably obliterate views from 26 existing

dwellings” whose “dominant view will be that of a blank 14m high wall” should it go ahead.

Architect, Justin Hamilton, from Schreiber Hamilton Architecture, said the building has been designed to allow “view sharing” and was intended as a “benchmark” for urban design in Newcastle. “This will be an iconic gate-way building,” he said. “Newcastle is a creative and emerging city and deserves a design on this standard.”

Mr Hamilton said Council had not presented any evidence to indicate the site was part of the neighbouring park-land. “If there was evidence to suggest that we would certainly look at that,” he said.

Councillor Nuatali Nelmes raised concerns over the possibility of Council being left with a significant legal bill should the development go to the Land and Environment Court (LEC).

In 2008, both Council and the LEC

AmeliA PArrott @amelia_parrottrejected a proposal by Elefteria Pty Ltd to build a smaller development on the site, a ruling that cost Council $250,000 in legal costs.

HSRA claim Council has already spent over $70,000 on the current DA, although Council could not confirm the total spend.

Newcastle Lord Mayor, Jeff McCloy said more homework needed to be done before the application could proceed.

S hadow Minister for the Hunter, Sonia Hornery, has slammed the decision to transition general counselling services across the

Hunter to Medicare Local and other non-government organisations (NGO) saying it will leave the most vulnerable struggling.

Under the changes, those with mild depression or anxiety, people struggling to adjust to major life change or people experiencing ongoing stress due to family or relationship issues will access general counselling services through Hunter Medicare Local or other non-government organisations, while more complex mental health conditions will access support through Hunter New England Health’s specialist counselling services.

Hunter Medicare Local, Relationships Australia, Hunter Women’s Centre, Head-space Maitland and Newcastle, Catholic Care and the University of Newcastle Psychology Clinic have already committed to provide general counselling services to new and existing clients under the scheme.

The Member for Wallsend said the changes would see those in need of care paying more. “I am appalled that anyone would think this is acceptable,” Ms Hornery said in a statement. “Many of the alternative

Headspace Maitland will be one of seven service providers to offer general counselling services

services suggested by Hunter Health are at a cost to the patient. If counselling services are not easily accessible and affordable then the cost will only be transferred to the health system when these people find themselves without the preventative care that counselling provides.”

In a statement, HNE Health said the majority of providers offer bulk billing while others may charge a minimal part payment. HNE Health CEO, Michael DiRienzo said changes to health at all levels of government meant it was time to transi-tion services to the NGO sector. “For many years, HNE Health counselling services ensured people had good access to care at a time when few private and NGO providers could match their services to community needs and demand,” he said.

“In the past decade the range of alterna-tive service had grown significantly and many of these providers now duplicate our services. The National Health and Hospitals Network Agreement specifically states that generalist counselling services should be delivered by primary healthcare organisations, so it’s the right time to make this important change.”

HNE Health will continue to facilitate referrals to counselling services. Funding that would have been spent on generalist counselling services will be invested back into core HNE Health services.

F iery political debate marred the unveiling of plans for the ANZAC Memorial Walk from Strzelecki Lookout to Bar Beach last week,

as financial backers and councillors clashed over funding at a briefing commit-tee meeting at Newcastle City Council.

The cliff-hugging walk, to be flanked with steel silhouettes etched with the names of the 10,000 servicemen and women who enlisted from across the Hunter Valley during WWI, will commem-orate the hundredth anniversary of ANZAC and the establishment of the BHP steelworks in Newcastle in 1915.

Newcastle RSL sub-branch president, Ken Fayle said the RSL fully supported the project.

“This will be a memorial unique to anywhere in the free world… one of the very few living memorials,” he said.

“It has the potential to drag so many people to Newcastle.

“I guarantee this will be on every calen-dar about Newcastle within the first 12 months of its opening.”

During the meeting, Cr Michael Osborne highlighted a degree of cynicism about the project in the community, claiming he

Debate ignites over funding

had heard it referred to as the “Tim Owen Memorial Walk.”

But it was Cr Nuatali Nelmes who voiced the most concern about the project.

While supporting the project in principal,

Cr Nelmes questioned why Council should contribute $1.5 million to connect the walk from Trig Point to Council’s Bathers Way project at Bar Beach, leading to repeated heated exchanges with key project backer,

AmeliA PArrott @amelia_parrottrestaurateur Neil Slater, during and after the meeting.

Cr Nelmes took to Twitter during the meeting to express her disapproval over Council’s plan to contribute to what she believed was a State Government project.

“In council with liberal state mp asking council to pay for his election promises #shamebarry [sic],” she wrote.

She then added, “Council cuts commem-orative services but wants to give $1.5M to the state for ANZAC centenary walk #shamebarry [sic].”

Member for Newcastle, Tim Owen, who sat in the public gallery during the meet-ing but did not address Council, later told the Post he believed Council would invest in the project.

“It’s a win-win for everyone,” he said. “We’ve got private funding to build a

significant portion of it and we’ve been working with Council to integrate that into the Bathers Way but to do that it’s going to take a little more money from Council to make that happen.

“For a $1 million to $1.5 million invest-ment, if they choose to do that, they get a $5 million walk. “I think that is a good investment for the city.”

Supporters of the project say the walk will be open in time for ANZAC Day next year.

P olice have raided the Newcastle clubhouse of the Rebels outlaw motorcycle gang.

Police entered the former pool hall on King Street at about 11:30am on Thursday morning, dismantling the facility and removing a number of items including Rebels paraphernalia, alcohol, beer tickets, gym equipment, and a range of furniture.

One person was arrested at the location and taken into police custody.

The premises was the third local outlaw

motorcycle gang clubhouse to be searched by police within a week, following similar raids on a Comancheros clubhouse at Tea Gardens on Thursday, February 13 and the stripping of a Life and Death clubhouse in a Boolaroo industrial park the following Saturday.

The Commander of the Gangs Squad, Detective Superintendent Deborah Wallace said police were committed to disrupting the activities of outlaw motorcycle gangs through regular provocative operations and ongoing covert investigations.

CRIME

Bikie headquarters raided

Police outside the former Rebels clubhouse on King Street, Newcastle

“As long as these gangs carry out ille-gal acts, we will be doing everything we can to disrupt their activities,” she said.

“We will continue to dismantle club-houses, we will continue to regularly inspect their vehicles and, critically, we will continue to conduct thorough investigations into the serious crimi-nal activity that a number of outlaw

motorcycle gang members involve themselves in.”

Detectives believe the property was converted into a clubhouse in recent weeks and will be examining whether there was a breach in the development application of the premises under the Environmental Planning and Protec-tion Act.

C apacity crowds packed the Regal over the weekend, as the Birmingham Gardens cinema reopened its doors to the public

for the first time in more than seven years.Member for Wallsend, Sonia Hornery, who

was instrumental in securing the $140,000 grant that allowed the much-needed reno-vation of the former community hall to go ahead, officially reopened the cinema on Friday night at an event attended by more than 100 Regal supporters and films buffs, local, state and federal MPs and former Newcastle Lord Mayor, John Tate.

Jo Smith, director of the Regal Cinema Building Trust, gave thanks to Bruce Avard, who ran the Regal for 38 years prior to its closure in 2006.

“Bruce Avard created a legacy of inde-pendent cinema in Newcastle,” Ms Smith said. “Last night I spoke with Bruce and he gave me his secret recipe for the choc-tops, so they will be back,” she joked.

The Regal will run as a community cinema until a permanent commercial operated is secured. The cinema will open regularly on Friday nights, Saturdays and Sunday. Session times are published weekly on the Friends of the Regal Facebook page.

Local government reform is the topic of the week with the release of Lake Macquarie City Council’s response to the recommendations in the Independent Local Government Review Panel’s final report.

I was surprised by the recommendation put forward by the Panel to amalgamate Lake Macquarie and Newcastle councils, and to move Morisset and Wyee into either Wyong Council or a new a Central Coast Council, given the evidence provided in our Council’s previous submission.

I want what is best for local government in NSW, but most importantly, what is best for the people of Lake Macquarie. In this matter, those goals are the same I believe. What we need to be doing is making sure that we build stronger and more sustainable councils through appropriate processes and structural changes.

Lake Macquarie City Council is performing strongly and is well placed to provide good-quality daily services that all 200,000 of our residents expect and rely on. As we stated in our previous submission to the Local Government Review Panel before they released their final report, we strongly believe we meet the requirements for a sustainable and efficient council.

For several years, Lake Macquarie has been improving its efficiency and working towards financial sustainability, and IPART and NSW Treasury Corporation have recognised these efforts and achievements.

I am inviting residents in our southern suburbs to attend a community meeting tomorrow (Thursday) evening at Wyee to discuss why proposed boundary changes in the Morisset-Wyee area are not feasible, not necessary, and would be detrimental to the community.

I’d welcome the community’s involvement, however should residents be unavailable to attend the community meeting, I’d encourage them to sign our petition at www.change.org

LAKE MACQUARIE MATTERS

A great city encompasses many elements—a thriv-ing economy, affordable housing, community safety, public transportation, arts and cultural events, and pride of place, to name a few. One that Newcastle is working to improve is walkability.

A measure of how friendly an area is to pedestrians, walkability has health, environmental and economic benefits for a city and its citizens. Factors affecting walkability include quality footpaths and sidewalks, traffic and road conditions, land use patterns, building accessibility and safety. Walkability is an important concept in sustainable urban design.

On Thursday 27 February, The City of Newcastle and The Heart Foundation will host a See Change Forum with Dr Rodney Tolley on Creating a walking friendly city. Council invites you to attend this informative forum from 5:30-8 pm at The Playhouse, 375 Hunter Street.

Dr Tolley is the Conference Director of Walk21, a not-for profit organisation that raises international awareness of walking issues. After teaching 30 years at Staffordshire University in the UK, he is now an experienced consultant in active, sustainable trans-port. Listed in the top 50 of the world’s sustainable transport ‘heroes,’ he will share innovative and inspi-rational ideas for walkability from around the world.

Also at the forum, Tim Owen, MP for Newcastle, will discuss State Government actions to revitalise Newcastle and Council will present an update on the city centre revitalisation project.

Register now by emailing [email protected], as places are limited. Council welcomes your participation and input on this important issue.

Message from the General Manager2014 is set to be a busy year for Delta Electricity and our neighbouring communities.

Delta was proud to celebrate with local residents at the annual Australia Day Big Breakfast on 26 January at Mannering Park. Thanks to efforts of the Gwandalan Lions volunteers, this year’s breakfast was another great success.

We are pleased to report that the demolition of the A-Station at Vales Point is nearing completion. The Unit 1, 2 and 3 boilers have now been removed, along with 90 per cent of the Unit 4 boiler and 95 per cent of the main turbine hall. Work to remove the few remaining structures is expected to be completed by March.

The A-Station project continues to recycle the majority of materials reclaimed from the site. In recognition of the significance of the site to local people, Delta will install a heritage plaque that commemorates the A-Station’s history.

Preparations for the sale of Delta Electricity Central Coast are continuing and likely to be finalised in mid-2014. We are working with the NSW Government and the local Council to ensure that community access to local land and facilities including Koala Park and Tom Barney Oval will continue into the future. We will update you in later editions of Community News.

Australia Day Big Breakfast

Delta Electricity joined forces with the Gwandalan Lions Club to host the ever popular Australia Day Big Breakfast at Mannering Park on 26 January.

A great local tradition, the Australia Day Big Breakfast is an opportunity for Delta to say ‘thank you’ to the local community.

Delta provided the food and drinks for the free event, while the Gwandalan Lions Club members cooked up a storm, making 1,280 sandwiches and serving 550 cups of tea and coffee and 820 soft drinks.

An estimated 800 people from the local community came along to sample the event’s famous bacon and egg sandwiches.

GOATS Festival

Join in the carnival atmosphere at this year’s GOATS Family Festival held at Koala Park, San Remo on Sunday 6 April.

A celebration of the talents and passions that young people bring to our local community, the event has been chosen once again to launch Youth Week on the Central Coast.

Proudly sponsored by Delta Electricity, GOATS provides the opportunity for performers under the age of 25 years to take the stage and be inspired by fellow musicians. The event is supported by more than 50 young volunteers.

Come along and enjoy a great day filled with music, entertainment, rides, food and market stalls.

WHAT’S ON

Tidy Towns & Landcare

Delta Electricity proudly supports the terrific efforts of the Summerland Point/Gwandalan Tidy Towns & Landcare group.

The group’s Tidy Towns work includes mowing, garden maintenance, litter collection and graffiti removal across both suburbs all year round. Landcare activities include bitou bush and lantana removal from the Lake Macquarie foreshore at Summerland Point each winter.

In 2013-14, Delta’s grant has enabled the group to pay for operating costs and equipment repairs, as well as purchase 20 new high visibility safety shirts worn by the volunteers.

“Without Delta’s help we would have to severely curtail our activities,” said group spokesperson, Chris Smith. “The grant enables us to focus on our work and the whole community benefits from a cleaner, greener environment.”

New Apprentices

Delta Electricity continued our long tradition of supporting local youth employment on the Central Coast by taking on eight new apprentices in January.

Five 1st year apprentices attended Vales Point Power Station for a brief orientation before commencing their courses at the Ausgrid Skills Centre.

Three 3rd year apprentices commenced onsite at Vales Point Power Station.

Delta’s apprenticeship program funds basic skills training and wages, and also provides valuable industrial experience in subsequent years.

The program enables Delta to develop the skills and knowledge we need for sustainable electricity generation, as well as create all important employment opportunities for local young people.

Emergency Exercise Success

Vales Point Power Station successfully staged an emergency exercise on 18 February, demonstrating Delta’s ability to respond effectively to an emergency incident.

Delta conducts emergency exercises internally every year – and in conjunction with emergency service agencies every two years – to test our emergency systems and response times and meet the requirements of the NSW Environment Protection Authority.

This latest exercise involved Delta working with local emergency services to respond to a fictional scenario that put into practice first aid responses, site evacuation, some community alerts and environmental containment procedures.

In the unlikely event of an emergency taking place please check Delta’s website – www.de.com.au – or call our recorded incident information line 1800 115 277 for regular updates.

Winning Formula

Delta was pleased to help out Merewether High School students in the regional F1 in Schools Technology Challenge.

The world’s largest secondary school technology program, F1 in Schools gives students the opportunity to design, make and race miniature Formula 1 cars powered by carbon dioxide.

Delta’s sponsorship for the regional competition included financial support for Merewether High’s junior and senior teams, as well as mentoring by our Technology Development Manager, Anthony Callen.

Merewether High’s junior team performed well, while the senior team was selected as a wild card entry in the NSW Finals, where they were crowned overall State Champions. The senior team will now compete in the National Finals in Canberra in March and Delta wishes them the best of luck!

The NSW Minister for Fair Trad-ing, Stuart Ayres has warned the public to be on the lookout for scams, after a Kotara South couple

Fair Trading Minister's warning after Kotara South couple targeted with bogus letter

CONSUMER AFFAIRS

Be on the look out for scams

Clive and Dorothy Hogan became suspi-cious after receiving a letter from a US-based package handling and care facility

ity based in Las Vegas in the United States. The letter stated that a package was being held securely and would be delivered to a confirmed address upon receipt of a $30 payment from the couple.

Mrs Hogan alerted members of her family to the suspicious letter, who told her not to respond as it was likely to be a scam.

A friend and neighbour then took a copy of the letter to their local Member of Parlia-ment, Andrew Cornwell, who alerted Fair

Trading. Mrs Hogan said she was surprised by how authentic the letter seemed.

“They had my name, address, postcode – the only suspicious thing about it was from America,” she said.

While Mrs Hogan said her and her husband did not know anyone who lived in America, coincidently their grand-daughter had recently returned from travels there. “At first I thought she could have sent me something while she was over there,” Mrs Hogan said.

“I have heard of big money scams happening in other countries but you never think it will happen to you.”

It is not just the elderly members of the community who are targeted by scammers, as Member for Charlestown, Andrew Corn-well attested.

He told the Post he had recently been targeted by a business directory scam.

The scam letter from “Yellow Page Australia” was sent to his veterinary prac-tice and electorate office and requested payment for a business directory listing.

He said Mr and Mrs Hogan had done the right thing by letting him know about the letter they received.

“Falling victim to a scam can be embar-rassing but if you delay in letting someone know about it there may be others out there getting caught in the same net.”

Mr Ayres said the general rule that if it sounds too good to be true it probably is, often holds true.

“The biggest message is to be aware,” he said.

“Most of our leads around scams that are happening come from the public… it’s really important that if you feel like you’ve be subject to a scam or you’ve received something in the post you’re not sure about or a phone call or email, contact Fair Trad-ing and we will be able to tell you what’s going on.”

If you suspect you’ve been the target of a scam, call Fair Trading on 13 32 20 or report online at www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au.Li

Planet Fitness Health Clubs are seeking the help of the community with finding a family in Newcastle in need of funding as part of their Run with a Story event.

Last year, Planet Fitness assisted local man Matthew Storey with funding for his potentially terminal lymphoma (he was recently announced in remission).

You can also register for a run (or walk) to be held on Sunday 4th May, along the Fernleigh Track in distances ranging from 10km-60km. To nominate a family or to register for the run, speak to staff at Planet Fitness Lambton (Hunter Stadium, Turton Rd. Ph: 4956 2144) and Planet Fitness Charlestown (Hilltop Plaza, Cnr Charlestown Rd and Hopetoun St. Ph: 4943 4200).

Run with a Story

C hildren at the YMCA’s New Lambton Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) centre at St Ther-ese’s Primary School will soon

be enjoying the outdoors much more thanks to a State Government grant.

The $7,750 grant will go towards the construction of a new decked and shaded area at the rear of the centre and a welcoming garden and veggie patch at the front. Centre coordinator, Katie Ryan said she will be glad to see the children playing and learning outside more as a result of the grant.

“The new outdoor learning area will

give children a great outdoor area to eat, learn and play,” she said.

“We are excited to be able to take the children out of the confines of a classroom and provide them with a space where they can be active regardless of the weather.”

The shaded area will also be utilised as a safe space for children with additional needs and allow for improved supervision within the centre, while the garden will add to the centre’s focus on sustainability.

Member for Newcastle Tim Owen visited children and staff at the centre last Friday afternoon. He said the funding, awarded under the Community Building

Partnerships (CBP) scheme, would go far to provide a more enriching experience for children being cared for at the centre.

“The YMCA New Lambton OSHC provides a fantastic service and is an asset to the community,” he said.

“The CBP program aims to provide improved community infrastructure for the people of NSW and encourage community-based activities that create more vibrant and inclusive communities.

“I am pleased to award this funding to the YMCA New Lambton OSHC, which will enable the Y to continue to provide quality care for our local families.”

Shots fired at houseTwo men were charged with drug offences

after gunshots were fired at a home in the Lake Macquarie area last Thursday.

About 3am, two gunshots were allegedly fired from a blue Holden Commodore sedan into a home on Grand Parade, Bonnells Bay.

No one was injured during the incident.Police were notified and attended, estab-

lishing a crime scene that was examined by specialist forensic officers.

About 4.45am, police from Lake Macquarie Local Area Command stopped a blue Holden Commodore in Alliance Avenue, Morisset.

Officers spoke to the two male occupants and searched the vehicle, allegedly locating a round of ammunition and prohibited drugs.

The men, aged 20 and 22, were taken to Toronto Police Station where they were both issued field court attendance notices for pos-sess prohibited drug.

Both men are due to appear at Toronto Local Court on Wednesday 9 April.

Children approachedPolice are appealing for information after

two children were allegedly approached by a man at Kotara last week.

About 3pm on Friday, a 10-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl were riding along a bike track near Vista Parade when they saw a man on the path ahead of them.

Police have been told the man grabbed the boy and spoke to him. He dropped his bike and ran off with his sister into Grayson Street.

The man allegedly followed the children

into Bryson Street where they were able to hide and later make their way home.

Police from Lake Macquarie Local Area Command are investigating the incident and are looking for the man who has been described as being 60-70 years old, 180-185cm tall with a thin build, grey hair, goatee beard and stubble.

He was described as wearing a navy-col-oured t-shirt and green cargo shorts.

Gunshot damage to carPolice are conducting investigations after

shots were fired into a parked car at Balco-lyn, near Lake Macquarie.

About 7:20am last Thursday, police were called to Bay Street after a resident located gunshot damage to his blue Mitsubishi Triton ute.

Police have been told the vehicle was parked outside the house when the oc-cupants heard what they thought was firecrackers in the street about 10:30pm last Wednesday night.

A crime scene was established by police and the vehicle examined by specialist forensic officers which confirmed the Mitsubishi had sustained front panel and windscreen damage from a shotgun blast.

Detectives from Lake Macquarie Local Area Command are investigating the shoot-ing and urge anyone who saw or heard any suspicious activity in the vicinity of Bay Street last Wednesday night to contact po-lice. Women's health

Each year in Australia almost 1300 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Ovar-ian cancer can occur at any age.

There are several different types of ovar-ian cancers but most have their peak occur-rence in the seventh and eight decades of life. There is a gradual increase in ovarian cancer after menopause but all women need to be vigilant about the symptoms.

The key to optimising treatment is early detection and the early symptoms can be

quite subtle. These symptoms can include loss of appetite without weight loss, persistent abdominal bloating, an unusual change in bowel or bladder habits, or gener-ally feeling unwell. Pain is not a particular feature.

If you experience any of these persistent symptoms you should see your GP as soon as possible. Your GP may request some blood tests and an ultrasound.

Unlike PAP smears every two years for

cervical pre-cancer, there is no equivalent screening test for ovarian cancer. There are several blood tests, included with ultrasound, combined with a woman’s age and menopausal status, to give a ‘Risk of Ovarian Malignancy’ (ROMA). These are showing promise but more research is needed in this area.

At present the best early detection is by recognising these subtle symptoms and seeing your GP.

health & lifestyle

david stein anthony Piggott

After a few minutes of watching parents killing kids, lovers killing partners, drug dealers selling stories, random shootings and all sorts of political fighting, I have realised watching sensationalised news will quickly put to an end any hope of being an optimistic, positive human being.

Einstein said, “The most important decision a man will ever make is whether he lives in a friendly universe.”

I think what he was getting at was how you believe the world around you operates is how you interpret the things that happen to you everyday, a bit like the old ‘glass half full’ saying that floats around.

It turns out, people who believe they live in a friendly universe are looking for opportunity at every turn.

People who believe they live in an unfriendly universe look to be persecuted. They live in fear, and fear is the enemy of just about everything healthy.

There are many studies showing how health is massively affected by fear or stress. None of them are positive. Many news directors have made a choice that is understandable in our capitalistic system. They want to attract as many people as they can to get the most money for the commercials that run within their broadcasts.

As many a young reporter is told from day one, “if it bleeds, it leads,” meaning the bigger the tragedy the better the story it will make. At least there is a simple answer to this one. If it’s making you angry or your gut churn to watch the lead story, turn it off!

There is a fine line between a good and a bad shopping experience, between one that leaves you happy and one that leaves you mad, between one that has you reaching for your wallet and one that keeps your wallet in your bag.

For me, this fine line all comes down to the shop assis-tant. This week I had picked out a couple of items at a store and was waiting in front of the counter to be served. With the clothes in my hands, I was obviously ready to make a purchase but I was being ignored.

There was a shop assistant behind the counter, who I am positive had seen me standing there, chatting to the other shop assistant, who had just clocked on, about their week-end. I stood waiting for five minutes (seriously, I timed it), as they chatted about how hot that guy was and how much fun they had, before finally I was acknowledged.

I was expecting a “sorry to keep you waiting, how can I help?” but instead I got a rude “are you right?” in a tone that suggested I was interrupting the world’s most impor-tant conversation. I politely replied with “no, actually I am waiting to be served. Is this where I pay?”.

The girl grabbed the clothes from my hand with a huff and struck up the conversation with her friend as I stood by fuming. Is it wrong of me to expect to have the full attention of the shop assistant?

After collecting my purchase I still thanked the assistant for her service (she didn’t reply and may have even given me a dirty look, I’m not sure) and solemnly vowed to never visit that store again – imagine if the owners knew.

As a nation we are getting fatter and the most recent data coming from the Australian Bureau of Statistics is quite frightening.

These show that in 2011-12 (the latest information analysed), some 70% of males aged 18 years and over were overweight or obese, with 56% of females also fall-ing into this category.

Being overweight or obese increases the risk of suffer-ing from a range of health conditions, including coronary heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, some cancers, knee and hip problems, and sleep apnoea.

Only a few years ago, the total annual cost of obesity to Australia, including health system costs, loss of produc-tivity costs and carers' costs, was estimated at around $58 billion. And as more and more of us fall into the obese category, that figure is also going to rise.

The problem is not only in adults but more and more children are being diagnosed as being obese. Overweight and obesity in children is a major health concern. Studies have shown that once children become obese they are more likely to stay obese into adulthood.

The history of rock ‘n’ roll is littered with musical prodigies, charismatic storytellers, oblivion-seeking omnivores and odds-defying survivors whose contributions to the soundtracks of our lives have attained for them—or at least their work—a measure of immortality. Rarely, though, do all of these traits come together in the form of a single person, as they do in the case of legendary saxophone player Bobby Keys. Touring since the age of 15, Texan Bobby Keys has played with them all. From Dion's 'The Wanderer' to the solo records of three Beatles, Joe Cocker, The Who, Clapton, The Faces, Nillson and Lynyrd Skynyrd to name a star studded few. He has also toured with a band called the Rolling Stones since 1970, and it is in between shows with the Stones as they travel about the Southern Hemisphere that we get to witness Bobby and his band The Suffering Bastards stomping it out.

what's on

You’d think that when Ben Chasny from the swirling psych outfit Six Organs of Admittance teamed up with Donovan Quinn from psych-folkers Skygreen Leopards, the result would be something approaching the equivalent of a sonic lava lamp.

However, on ‘Voices in a Rented Room’, the pair are relying less on the kaleidoscopic miasma that typifies both the Organs and the Leopards and more on straight-up folk. The instrumentation is predominantly acoustic and mostly skeletal – highlighting the way in which both Chasny and Quinn can fill a song with just the barest elements – a guitar, piano, and some loose harmonies. Standouts here include the Big Star-esque ‘Sometimes You Crash and the introspec-tive ‘Your Girlfriend Might Be A Cop’.

From Danish director Nicholas Winding Refn, who gave us the uncompromising Pusher trilogy and the brilliant bio-pic Bronson, comes this stylish and tense drama that offers more than a few surprising moments. Ryan Gossling (Blue Valentine, The Ides of March) stars as an unnamed wheelman-for-hire who, by day makes a living as a movie stuntman.

Refn presents the action in a meandering, dream-like, almost Lynchian way.

It is a truism of modern cinema that both Denzel Washington and Mark Whalberg know their way around an action flick – something that is proved, once again in ‘2 Guns’.

DEA agent Robert Trench (Washington), takes advantage of gunman Michael Stigman's (Whalberg) idea to rob a bank to bust him and a mob boss. However, it proves too successful with much more money seized than anticipated with Trench's forces not stopping the getaway. Complicating things still more, Stigman turns out to be a Naval Intelligence agent who shoots Trench and takes the money.

The debacle suddenly finds Trench and Stigman in a bloody web of corruption.

One, along with the likes of Don Walker and Paul Kelly, is widely regarded as one of the most evocative song-writers Australia has ever

produced. The other, who, as guitarist with Midnight Oil, was the architect of some of the most powerful Oz rock ever committed to tape. So, you know that when Neil Murray and Jim Moginie get together, the result will be something very special indeed.

The pair will be swinging by Newcastle next month for their ‘One Of Those Tunes’ show which Murray, the author of the uplifting classic ‘My Island Home’ said would be an intimate retelling of both his and Moginie’s careers although, ever humble, he added that he wasn’t sure how much he would bring to the party.

“The show is basically us doing a lot of tracks from both our back catalogues, but not necessarily the ones you might expect,” he said.

“Although, I’m not really sure how much I add to Jim’s stuff, but he adds a hell of a lot to mine – I’m just a hack guitarist, Jim’s the real muso."

Given that the pair became friends in the mid-80s when Murray’s pioneering outfit

Stephen BiSSet

MusiC

The Warumpi band opened for the Oils on their legendary ‘Blackfella Whitefella’ tour and have collaborated often ever since, (the pair first collaborated in the studio on the Warumpi Band’s original version of the classic ‘My Island Home’, with Jim on keyboards. Jim has contributed as producer and musician on most of Neil’s albums), Murray said that a fair amount of intuitiveness had built up between the two.

“It is very intuitive between us – we almost don’t have to verbalise anything,” he said.

“Jim just has a fantastic grasp of where I want to go with my music and this comes across really well on stage.”

For Murray, who with the Warumpi band, is regarded as one of the pioneers and great champions of indigenous music remains philosophical about the influence he has had on the Aussie music landscape.

“I really don’t think about it in terms of influence, I just think of my career in terms of what I’m doing now – I just want to continue to produce music that is vital. I mean the Warumpi Band definitely blazed a trail and it’s nice that people think that way about my work, but I certainly don’t dwell on it.

“To be frank, the greatest award that I’ve been given is having a young Aboriginal man come up to me and tell me that if it wasn’t for my music, he wouldn’t be alive. You just can’t beat that recognition.”

Hands up in the air

They may’ve been a little quiet since their 2009 acoustic album ‘Dancing in the Storm’ but Melbourne-born pop-rockers Boom Crash Opera are

certainly making up for lost time. With a compilation, ‘The Best Things’

and a four-album box-set ‘Rattle It Out’ currently doing their thing, the band are about to embark on a national tour that will see them swing by Bimbadgen for a bill of Oz rock legends including Jimmy Barnes, The Angels and Ian Moss. Front-man Dale Ryder told TE that the band were literally ‘champing at the bit’ to get back out on the road.

“It’s great to be getting out there again,” he said. “We played a couple of warm-up shows in Adelaide and they went really well and the Day on the Green shows are just the icing on the cake for us.”

Ryder said the band, who were respon-sible for such classics as ‘Onion Skin’, ‘Hands Up In the Air’ and ‘Her Charity’, were undergoing a bit of a renaissance

Stephen BiSSet

Music

at the moment, but it was more about having fun than putting their nose to the rock and roll grindstone. “Yeah, well we played some Day on the Green shows last year that went really well and after that we were sitting around listening to the songs and we realised that there was plenty of life in Boom Crash Opera, yet,” he said. “There’s a lot less pressure this time around – it’s more about having fun, I mean we’re under no illusions of conquer-ing the world, we just want to get out there and have a good time.”

Aside from an inherent ability to write songs with more hooks than Rex Hunt’s tacklebox, Boom Crash Opera were also no slouches in the live arena, earning a repu-tation as one of the most energetic bands on the circuit. Ryder said that there was no need to get match-fit for the upcoming shows as all the energy he needed was contained within the songs.

“It really in the songs – I just can’t help but to jump around and such when playing them,” he said. “Peter [Farnan, guitarist] is just so good at injecting that energy into the music and there’s a certain bombastic attitude about our music that makes it really quite easy to give it your all.”

Screen legend Kevin Costner ups the ante as a dying Secret Service agent trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter is offered an experimental drug that could save his life in exchange for one last assignment.

Directed by McG (‘Termi-nator Salva-tion’, ‘Charlie’s Angels’), expect plenty of thrills in this one.

The thrills are set to continue with this edge-of-your-seat action fest. Liam Nee-son stars as a US air marshall who springs into action during a transatlantic flight af-ter receiving a series of text messages that put his fellow passangers lives at risk un-less the airline transfers $150 million into an offshore account.

Terror at 50,000 feet.

Directed by Joel and Ethan Cohen (‘The Big Lebowski’, ‘Fargo’) and starring Justin Timberlake, Carey Mulligan and John Goodman, ‘In-side Lleywn Davis’ follows a week in the life of a young folk singer as he navigates the Greenwich Village folk scene of 1961.

Guitar in tow, huddled against the unforgiving New York winter, he is struggling to make it as a musician against seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

It is the most basic of human desires that sees aging booze-hound, Woody Grant (Bruce Dern), travel from in Montana to Nebraska, with his son David (Will Forte), the pursuit of the good life. Oh, and $1 million.

Like director, Alexander Payne’s last feature film, 'The Descend-ants', 'Nebraska' is an exploration of family. The complexities and dynamics come to light through subtle and clever dialogue that, like the performances, never feels forced. The black and white cinematography by'Phedon Papamichael, is utterly stunning – corn fields and interstates never looked so good. Forte proves he’s good for more than just skits on Saturday Night Live and shares some truly tender scenes Dern as David tries to get closer to his hardened dad, while the Oscar nominated, June Squibb is hilarious as the matriarch, Kate. The film does sometimes move at about the same pace as an octogenarian from America’s Midwest, but if you can put up with the slow tempo, a beautiful payoff awaits.

While its predecessor was an exercise in tension, showing that Aussies could make genre pics along with the best of them, this latest instalment comes of as a pale imitation.

Much of the unrelenting savageness of the original has been superseded with an almost comic tone, reminiscent of the later ‘Nightmare on Elm Street Films’.

Director Greg McLean steers a very similar path, plot-wise this time around with everyone’s favourite psychopathic bushman Mick Taylor (John Jarratt) cutting a swathe through a slew of unwitting victims. The body-count may be higher in this one, but there is an overarching sense of style over substance.

However, there are some moments that truly work – most nota-bly a scene in which Taylor terrorises an English backpacker with a disturbing Australian history quiz that also involves fingers and a grinder. Ouch. Jarratt brings the same level of over the top menace to the role, but the film is further marred by perhaps one of the most unsatisfying endings in recent memory.

After a conditioning of dance music from a young age it's no wonder that Jon-T has developed into the young and creative electronic musician he is today. Combining the full bodied tunes of the modern music scene and enjoyable classics with the energetic element of traditional live music, Jon-T uses various drumming and DJ gear to produce a unique music experi-ence perfectly suited for any situation. His repertoire spreads from the meaty club genres such as dubstep, house and hip hop to chill-out genres such as R&B, and nu-soul.

At the age of 12 when a guitar was placed in his hands, it wasn’t hard to tell that Ben Travis was destined to be a performer. After years of playing in bands, duos and trios fine tuning his performance skills it was time to take the leap and play the way he has always loved. Stripped back and AcousticBy The age of 20 Ben had already performed with high profile artists such as The Screaming Jets, Anastasia, Chirs Issakk, James Rayne, Kid Courages and Grinspoon. Performed at venues such as The Newcastle and Sydney Entertain-ment Centres, recorded an EP and toured Malaysia with his band. Now at the age of 23 all of those experiences as well as seven years fronting local cover band Sundays Record shine through - from Chuck Berry to Katy Perry and anywhere in between.

Here’s a quick notice to all working musicians. If you are not Bruce Springsteen or a member of the E Street band then, chances are,

you’re doing it wrong. What Springsteen accomplishes onstage, evidenced perfectly at the second of his Hope Estate shows, transcends the typical rock and roll show paradigm and takes it to a place that is truly inspiring and dare I say it, life-affirming.

Opening the three-and-a-half-hour-set with a rousing rendition of Eric Burdon and War’s ‘Spill the Wine’ (perfect for the winery crowd) Springsteen and his formidable retinue of players known as the E Street Band held the crowd in the palm of their hand with a set-list of clas-sics and more obscure cuts that pleased Springsteen dilatants and die-hards alike. All of the tracks you would expect were here – ‘Dancing in the Dark’, ‘Born in the USA, ‘Born to Run’ et al (albeit in

encores), but songs like ‘Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)’ and 4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy) from his ‘The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle’ album, were the icing on the cake.

So, what about the band? Well, without any word of hyperbole, the E Street Band are the best band on the planet. Hands down. In any other outfit, four guitarists might be seen as overkill, however when those guitarists in question are Spring-steen, Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, Steven “Little Steven” Van Zandt and Nils Lofgren, all is forgiven. Also, mention must be made of the brilliantly brassy horn section, led by Jake Clem-ons – the nephew of legendary E Street Band sax wrangler Clarence Clemons, who rival the iconic Muscle Shoals horn section, and the metronomic talents of drummer Max Weinberg.

While the aforementioned ‘Sandy’ and ‘Rosalita’ were standouts in this reviewer’s humble opinion, Tom Morello threatened to steal the show with a highly impassioned rendition of ‘The

Ghost of Tom Joad’ that culminated in a cacophony of guitar trickery from the former Rage member that sounded more like a DJ than guitarist.

While the majority of the set was a literal rock and roll masterclass, Springsteen closed the show with a second encore with two moving solo performances of ‘I Wish I Were Blind’ and ‘Thunder Road’ and with that, an awestruck silence wafted over the crowd.

The set-list: Spill the Wine, My Love Will Not Let You Down, Death to My Hometown, Seeds, Out in the Street, Rosalita (Come Out Tonight), High Hopes, Just Like Fire Would, Johnny 99, Heaven's Wall, Brilliant Disguise, Human Touch, I'm Goin' Down, Pay Me My Money Down, Shackled and Drawn, Radio Nowhere, The Rising, The Ghost of Tom Joad, Badlands Encore: 4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy), Born in the U.S.A., Born to Run, Ramrod, Dancing in the Dark, Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out, Rockin' All Over the World, Encore 2: I Wish I Were Blind, Thunder Road.

Kamahl WestsNeW lambtoN WeD, march 12

Nature boy returns

A fter 50 years in the business, the legendary Kamahl finds himself at a crossroads. He has just released

what he describes as his best album yet in his 3-disc set ‘Heart and Soul’ (a best-of album that also features his inspirational rendition of the ‘Gettysburg Address’), however it seems the machinations of promotion are slower than he expected. Speaking to TE, the iconic baritone said it was a case of history repeating.

“In 1970, I found myself between a rock and a hard place – I had some records out but was receiving no airplay at all,” he explained.

“Out of sheer desperation, I found myself in Melbourne on a miserable October afternoon and I looked out the window and across the road was a BP Service Station, I decided to make a call and I ended up doing an album called ‘Peace on Earth’, of quasi-Christmas songs that was sold exclusively through BP.

“I ended up selling 135,000 albums and I gave all the royalties - $49,000 – to

the charity Freedom From Hunger. “As we speak I am in a similar predicament - I have this fantastic album out but nobody knows about it so I will be also be selling the album through Rotary to support their fantastic ‘End Polio Now’ campaign."

Kamahl, who after arriving in Adelaide from Malaysia in 1953, became a household name with more than 30 albums under his belt (as well as Order of Australia, Father of the Year and Centenary Medal nods) added that while he felt blessed to still be singing after all these years, he remained philosophical about his icon status.

“My voice has nothing to do with me – beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” he said.

“I remember going back to Malaysia to visit my mother when she was alive and she said “Okay son, if you want to sing the white man’s music let’s here some”, so I sang her [Nat King Cole’s] ‘Nature Boy’, and she said “oh doesn’t that hurt your voice, singing like that?

“But, it’s just unbelievable that I’m still able to do this, to be accepted. It’s the highest possible reward."

Many people choose to invest in property because it is a great tactic to build wealth and secure their futures financially. However, too many investors are failing to maximise the returns on their properties because they skip some of the fundamentals, according to First National Real Estate Lake Macquarie Principal, Troy Duncan.

“If you’re looking for strategies to get the most out of your rental property, there are some key things you should be prepared to do," Troy said. “The first is to hire a professional property manager, particularly if you don’t have time to study and stay up to date with the legis-lation that governs your state. The pace of change in a landlord’s obligations can be overwhelming and the consequences of mistakes can be devastating.”

Managing your own rental property can be a difficult task, especially if you have a large portfolio. Even if you want to manage a property nearby to where you live, it can lift a considerable weight to hire a property manager for properties

you have that are farther afield. “The second most important thing is to review your rent. It may be years since you last reviewed the price you’re charging for your rental property and the market can change quite often. Fluctuations in vacancy rates and median rents can all impact on how much you can charge for your property, and you may end up charging too little," said Troy.

Reviewing rent on a regular basis helps assure a rental property is properly positioned to meet the market. Investors should compare their rental properties with other similar rentals, or obtain a rent appraisal from an agent.

surfest

I nternationals and Aussies shared the podium at Surfest on Sunday as three weeks of surfing action came to a head at Merewether Beach.

Port Macquarie rider, Matt Banting took home the Mark Richards trophy, claiming victory over veteran Nathan Hedge after a high-scoring Burton Toyota Pro final.

Ten minutes into the final Banting posted an impressive 9.33 ride to take the lead, before backing it up with another score in the 9-point-range to eventually claim the title with a score of 18.36 over Hedge’s 14.57 effort.

Banting, who claimed his first ASP 6-star Qualifying Series win at the Hurley Australian Open of Surfing in Manly in 2012, said he was already picturing himself on the podium after his first ride.

“After I posted that first nine, I started to get excited and picture myself on the podium already, but I had to tell myself to settle down and get back to basics and take it just like any other heat,” he said.

“It’s hard to treat it like any other heat, but you have to try.

“I got third in the US Open last year but this feels way better.”

In the Hunter Ports Women’s Classic, Malia Manuel took the title over fellow Hawaiian rider, Alessa Quizon.

Coming off a third placing in the ASP 6-star Hurley Australian Open of Surf-ing in Manly earlier this month, Manuel

said she was glad to take it all the way in Newcastle.

“I didn’t come to Surfest last year and I’m so glad I came back this year,” she said. “I got second last time I was here so I know how it feel to be the bridesmaid and it feels really good to step up.

Despite her runner-up placing, Quizon

said she was excited to be one of two Hawaiian girls in the final. “The Hawai-ian girls are ripping,” she said. “It’s usually the Australian girls winning all the events so it’s good to have the Hawai-ians stepping up and representing.”

The event brought upsets for many of surfing’s big names.

Banting defeated Brazilian Adriano De Souza in the second semi-final, last year’s Burton Toyota Pro winner, Joel Parkinson bowed out early after finishing third in his heat on Friday while five-time women’s world champion, Stephanie Gilmore failed to progress with a third placing at Merewether on Thursday.

Banting holds his nerve

T he Knights’ 34-14 win over Canberra in a trial in Tamworth last Saturday night raised some interesting options for coach Wayne Bennett in the wake

of Jarrod Mullen’s hamstring injury.Mullen will not need surgery after scans

showed his injury was not as bad as initially feared. But he will still miss between 12-16 weeks of football.

Darius Boyd spent time at five-eighth on Saturday night with Dane Gagai filling in at fullback, while the return of captain Kurt Gidley will have the Knights mentor breathing easier after the loss of his main playmaker.

New recruit Michael Dobson replaced Tyrone Roberts at halfback for the second half

in Tamworth and would provide plenty of experience if called upon for the season opener against Penrith on March 8. Akuila Uate was also tried at fullback for the final 20 minutes with Gagai moving back to the centres.

The only sour note to come out of the trial for the Knights was a suspected broken hand to forward Zane Tetevano. Hooker Adam Clyds-dale suffered a slight medial ligament strain during training a day prior to the match and was ruled out, but should recover to be considered for selection against Penrith.

In lower grade trials, Mounties defeated the Knights 50-16 in NSW Cup with Newcastle getting home narrowly over Canberra 30-28 in under 20s.

In SG Ball, Parramatta beat Newcastle 36-16 and in the Harold Matthews Cup, the Knights defeated the Eels 16-10.

F ennell Bay powerlifter Cameron McKenzie admits he didn’t give himself much chance of being named Lake Macquarie Sport-

sperson of the Year.“It was one of the most humbling expe-

riences of my life, being up on stage,” McKenzie said.

“There were athletes nominated that had represented Australia in sports much higher-profile than mine.”

He was also in awe of some of the previ-ous winners of the award, such as Paul Harragon and Nathan Outteridge.

Mayor of Lake Macquarie, Cr Jodie Harrison, presented McKenzie with his award and said Lake Macquarie City has a high number of exceptional sportspeople, as well as volunteers and administration staff who ensure these sports are available to the community.

“I would like to congratulate all of the nominees and winners for doing a tremendous job representing our City in their respective fields,” Cr Harrison said.

Last year, McKenzie won a gold medal at both the Australian Raw Powerlifting Championships and Pacific Invitational and will be heading to Johannesburg, South Africa for the World Powerlifting Championships in September.

He is also the only powerlifter in Australia to lift at the Arnold Classic Powerlifting Championships in the United States.

J ets coach Clayton Zane has given his side a pass mark despite the 2-0 loss to Sydney FC at Hunter

Stadium last Saturday.“I wasn’t unhappy with that

performance. I thought it was solid, but missing the icing on the cake,” Zane said.

“We lacked a little bit of imagi-nation. I’ll go back and look at the tape. We need to do a bit of work, especially with our front four players, on how we can start to unlock teams.

“We kept pressure on them but the pressure didn’t turn into chances”.

The Jets had appeared to be slightly on top in a scoreless first half, with James Virgili’s strong shot in the 23rd minute not far away from the far post.

The home side almost took the lead early in the second half

with Adam Taggart combining with Ruben Zadkovich near the box. The Jets captain’s well-directed shot forced Sydney goalkeeper Vedran Janjetovic into a hurried save.

But a header in the 60th minute from Sydney’s Sasa Ognenovski’s and an Alessan-dro Del Piero penalty in the 73rd minute ensured another home loss for Newcastle.

The Jets are four points outside the top six with seven games left and face a tough challenge this weekend against the West-ern Sydney Wanderers at Pirtek Stadium at 5pm on Sunday.

The Jets' National Youth League team took advantage of the first-half send off of Sydney captain Jacob Tratt to record a 7-1 thrashing in Wollongong. Newcastle led 1-0 when Tratt was given a red card in the 38th minute for bringing down Kale Bradbery in the area and scored twice more before halftime.
