‘I think this year was very productive. It was a great learning experience and we made real progress especially with our changes to the ERIC reporting being accepted by HSCIC and our ongoing work with the EU to develop a healthcare waste qualification. I also had a good time at the last conference – very interesting learning from other countries about how they manage waste. It certainly gives some perspective to us.’ Sustainability Manager 2gether NHS Foundation Trust

The NPAG is a part of the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust
First, I should like to wish you all a very happy and peaceful
New Year from all at NPAG.
Next, if I may, I should like to quote from the Shropshire
Health Visitor Manager and Professional Lead who is a mem-
ber of the NPAG Health Visiting and School Health Services
Network. This is an extract from an email I received shortly
before Christmas:
‘Hi John,
Many thanks … for such an enjoyable and informative meet-
ing yesterday, it was really worth taking the day out to at-
tend. I felt that all the presentations provided valuable
knowledge and generated much thought surrounding current
service delivery issues and this will all be very useful. Looking
forward to the next meeting…’
It is always gratifying to know that NPAG and our services
continue to hit the right spot. We are committed to continu-
ous improvement and with that in view are lining up a num-
ber of new developments for 2017. There will be more about
these in the next NPAG News.
In March, we will again be running a joint event with our Op-
erating Theatres and Decontamination groups in Coventry –
more information from Gemma. Later in the year, in Septem-
ber, our Annual Clinical Engineering Conference takes place.
This event gets bigger each year and we will be bringing you
more information over the next few weeks.
Best wishes for 2017.

Join Now! Waste Management BVG 2017
www.npag.org.uk
The NPAG Waste Management BVG is a unique group enabling NHS waste managers to meet and share new
ideas, evaluate tenders, discuss common problems, measure service providers performance, provide cost effec-
tive solutions, be creative and innovative in service design and generally network with others involved in the
complex area of waste management. The group has been running for a number of years and has consequently
developed a rich and multifarious membership which is continuously evolving. Throughout 2016 the group has
seen its profile raised considerably via its continued work helping with the development of the European Waste
Management Project (EUHCWM) culminating in a very well-received shared conference in November attended
by over 70 healthcare waste management professionals from across Europe. Additionally, the group have had
excellent interaction with NHS Digital (formerly HSCIC) regarding refinements and improvements to the annual
ERIC waste data collection system.
“This is a meeting I always look forward to, and always gain something from, even if it is just a boost
from the moral support received by other group members”
Waste and Sustainability Officer Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
Meeting agendas are driven by members needs and requirements and themes throughout 2017 will include:
Continued assistance with the development and introduction of the English part of the EUHCWM training course in conjunction with the EU lead.
Continued collaboration with the NHS Confederation EU lead to discuss post-Brexit waste management issues.
Continued development of the relationship with CIWM.
Evolving community waste disposal issues, including community tenders.
Introduction of offensive waste streams in all healthcare environments.
New waste technologies and their effectiveness in both addressing waste and cost issues.
Development of working relationships between infection control and waste management.
Environment Agency updates and discussion of the impacts and solutions.
Why join? Our Chair says: “This last year surely highlights the importance of the NPAG waste group and demonstrates what can be
achieved through close partnership working. We have seen its culmination in the end-of-year conference held
in conjunction with the EUHCWM project and attended by our colleagues from across Europe. Also, by provid-
ing formal suggestions to NHS Digital in how to improve the efficiency and relevance of the ERIC waste data
recording system the Group has managed to successfully influence thinking and has had its suggestions ac-
cepted as the model for next year’s returns – proof that membership can actually reap positive, practical, ben-
efits. I hope that such successes will continue and that the group’s profile will further advance, develop, thrive
and help make all our professional lives just that little bit easier through the support of colleagues and
peers.”
The Group have agreed to run four meetings again across 2017 with the first taking place in Birmingham on 2
February 2017 followed by 3 further meetings in the same location.

Culture Change Event Success!
Page 3 www.npag.org.uk
At NPAG we are passionate about continuous improve-
ment.
As part of NPAG’s ongoing patient experience programme
NPAG held a one day conference aimed at everyone who
works in the NHS. The December event was very well re-
ceived and we have been passed some excellent feedback
that we’d love to share with you.
The day gave delegates the opportunity to learn from case
studies across a range of different subject areas in
healthcare.
Our business partner Sheila Fisher of Impact Training gave
us a great start with a reminder of the importance of putting the customer first and the need to ensure we have
the right organisational culture and behaviours to effect that.
We heard from speakers in the areas of Health and Safety,
Estates Management and Sustainability, some of whom have
won national awards for their work, on the ways they have
addressed, implemented and, crucially are sustaining improve-
ments in culture and behaviour in their respective organisa-
tions.
The day concluded with a fascinating case study from Newcas-
tle Hospitals where our partners Alturos have been undertak-
ing a (free) culture assessment with the Trust’s ‘Green Cham-
pions.’
Alturos are able to offer one further free culture assessment to a trust and if you are interested in exploring this
possibility please contact Marie in the first instance.
Look out for details of our ongoing Customer Care programme here and on our website.
Here’s just some of the initial event feedback we have received:
“All the speakers were great & really enthusiastic about their areas & change & innovation as a whole. Really
interesting & useful day. Lots of ideas gained from other trusts /speakers & through networking time. Great
to hear about teams implementing change & the challenges they've faced.”
Lead Pharmacist Operations, Western Sussex NHS Hospitals Foundation Trust
“I thoroughly enjoyed the day which was very useful and informative.”
Associate Director Facilities, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde

Launching! Security Network 2017
www.npag.org.uk
Following a successful Inaugural Meeting in Novem-
ber, NPAG have recognised the clear demand for a
national Network for those engaged in NHS Security.
The NHS employs more than 1.5 million people,
putting it in the top five of the world’s largest work-
forces. Ensuring effective security within such a large
and diverse service is no small task. This network will
bring together NHS security specialists to understand
and overcome issues. It will allow shared learning and
training across organisations, pulling together a dis-
parate community and gaining valuable insights from
suppliers and experts.
Effective security demands strong partnerships within
organisations and with partner agencies and we will
be exploring how to create the right culture for better
security.
The Forward Agenda
The ongoing agenda will be driven by members but we
anticipate the new NPAG Network will enable mem-
bers to look at:
The national Security Picture and the impact on
healthcare
Operating in a new environment after the NHS
Protect transition
Security staff working in collaboration with the
Clinician
Cyber Security
Creating a ‘security culture’
Conflict resolution
Police liaison
Legislative and guidance updates
Sharing new initiatives, good practice & problem
solving

How Network Attendance Could Help You:
Discussion around the National security climate
and the way that impacts on the NHS
Provide further opportunities for mutual profes-
sional support between members
Greater understanding of the cultural / behav-
ioural impacts on security
Identification of cost savings
Why Join? Our Facilitator Says:
“Our aim is to actively encourage the sharing of
good practice, supporting members and forming
a strong network of likeminded individuals who
can all benefit from being members of the Securi-
ty Network. The face to face meetings will allow
members to expand their professional network,
meet colleagues from across the NHS and obtain
ongoing advice and support when they require it.
Members will have an open door to seek advice
on, or discuss, their own local issues in complete
confidence.”
The first meeting of the 2017 round will take place on
the 23rd February in Central London

Launching March 2017 membership of this group would be of considerable benefit to anyone interested in using
IT Systems to safely connect to patients - either directly through medical equipment and tele-medicine, or indi-
rectly through patient related applications.
The aim of the group is to encourage best practice by discussions, talks from leaders and specialists in the field
(you choose the topics) and developing our own project leadership skills.
Whether you are an IT manager, a Program / Project Manager or a Clinical Engineering Specialist who works with
the IT team, this group is for you.
We want to help you develop better relationships and IT/clinical vocabulary with your colleagues wherever IT
Systems and Clinical Systems come together. This could be in any setting - acute, community, private healthcare
and so on.
The first meeting of the 2017 round is scheduled to take place on Wednesday 29th March in London with an ex-cellent programme arranged including Linda Whalley, Director of Strategy, NHS Digital looking at the ‘Strategic overview of requirements and plans over the next 5 years’ and her colleague providing an excellent presentation on Cyber Security & CareCert. NPAG are keen to work with like-minded bodies and, in the area of
Travel Planning, we have established links with Act TravelWise via
our Car Parking and Travel Planning Network.
Individuals' travel behaviour is shifting and adapting in response to
changes in their own circumstances, their communities, the econo-
my and technology.
Practitioners in the travel and transport sector have the opportunity to help shape these changes in order to best
address people's needs whilst favouring sustainable modes.
The Act TravelWise Annual Conference is taking place in January. It will address a range of questions such as:
What is the future role of the car in the smart city?
How can workplaces, hospitals and universities best adapt to future travel needs and encourage a step-
change in travel behaviour?
How can we best work with LEPs and use capital funding to encourage walking and cycling?
How can we bring the benefits of the 'new sharing economy' to smaller towns and rural areas?
What is the future role of 'leaner' local authorities in behaviour change?
How can local authorities and transport operators work together to improve air quality and minimise the
negative impacts of HGV freight movements?
What are the expected impacts, both positive and negative, of new transport technologies?
How can we improve quality of life by discouraging excessive travel?
How should policy makers support social, economic and environmental sustainability when responding to
changes in technology and lifestyles?
The Act TravelWise Annual Conference & AGM is on Tuesday 17 January 2017 as a full-day event at the Macdon-
ald Burlington Hotel opposite New Street rail station in central Birmingham.
To book a place registration is now open via Eventbrite.
