nPL par o hGraph FlagshpNPL is part o the Graphene Flagship consortium that has been unded hala billion euros by the European Commission to develop the potential ographene along with related materials or applications in computing,batteries and sensors.
The Graphene Flagship project aimsto develop new materials that willrevolutionise diverse industries. It willbe coordinated by theoretical physicistJari Kinaret at Chalmers University oTechnology in Gothenburg, Sweden.
NPLs role in the project is twoold.Firstly, it will demonstrate moreaccurate and easy-to-use quantumstandards based on graphene andother low-dimensional materials, andsecondly it will develop and improvethe measurement methods that willhelp bring graphene technologies tomarket.

Rag o mldowScientists rom NPLs Temperature and Humidity Group have helped CEA(Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission o France) measure high
temperature reerence standards in one o their research urnaces, which areused in studies to help minimise the risk o nuclear accidents through betterplant design and the improved understanding o stages involved in severereactor accidents.
NPL is involved in a collaborative research project called High temperaturemeasurement or industrial applications (HiTeMS), which is unded by theEuropean Metrology Research Programme (EMRP). As part o this larger project,NPL and the National Measurement Institutes o France (LNE-Cnam) and Turkey(UME) helped CEA measure high temperature reerence standards in one o theirresearch urnaces. NPLs Dave Lowe, who worked on the project, said:
Having their own xed points will allow CEA to calibrate their temperature
measurement equipment in situ, giving them greatly reduced uncertainties
and improved knowledge or designing saety systems.

How la s our klogram?Periodically the UKs national mass standard, along with those o about40 other countries, is sent back to the Bureau International desPoids et Mesures (BIPM) or re-verication.
As part o this exercise the BIPM cleans the kilograms using a process known asnettoyage-lavage (cleaning and washing). This involves manually rubbing the
weight with an alcohol-soaked chamois leather, ollowed by washing in a jet osteam. The process is eective in removing the organic contamination that buildsup on all mass standards, but relies on the skill o the operator and has proved tobe difcult to replicate by other users at various National Measurement Institutes.NPL, in collaboration with BIPM, has developed a novel technique or the cleaningo primary mass standards which promises to be at least as eective as thenettoyage-lavage technique, but much more reproducible. The research currentlyunder way at NPL investigating the cleaning o primary mass standards orms parto a European project NewKILOto develop a practical means o disseminating theredened kilogram.

David Willetts, Minister o State or Universities and Science, has announced a25 million investment in a new Advanced Metrology Laboratory at NPL.
The Minister announced the new investment in a speechat the Policy Exchange think tank in London, where hediscussed how the UK could become world leaders ineight uture technologies and the role o government inpromoting and nancially supporting these industries.
In the speech, David Willets said: I can today announce weare providing an extra 25 million to build a state-o-the-
art laboratory or cutting-edge measurement research.
The creation o advanced acilities at the National
Physical Laboratory in Teddington will allow scientists
there to undertake leading-edge research in key
nano and quantum metrology (measurement science)
programmes. This investment in measurement sciencewill extend the UKs capabilities and build upon NPLsworld-leading expertise in the areas o high-accuracy opticalclocks and graphene characterisation. It will also acilitateinteraction between NPL and industry, universities and othercollaborators to help support growth in the UK throughcutting-edge technological development and application.

This new investment represents one o the most signicant made by NPL in recenttimes. The new mobile system will be based on Dierential Absorption Lidar (DIAL),which can provide rapid, accurate measurements o emissions up to 1 km awayrom industrial plants. State-o-the-art inrared and ultraviolet light technologyenables the system to pinpoint the source o emissions and visually representthem as a 3D map.

As well as taking the lead in these eight projects, NPL was successul as a partnerin a urther 14 projects. This means that, out o a total o 31 unded EMRP projects,NPL has a position in 22 o them - demonstrating the leading internationalstatus o NPL in European metrology, as well as the high value placed on NPLscontribution by other National Measurement Institutes across Europe. Richard Brown has been awarded the Doctor o Science (DSc) degree o ImperialCollege London in The Application o Measurement Science to EnvironmentalAnalytical Chemistry or Air Quality Studies.
This is only the ourth non-honorary DSc awarded by Imperial College since gainingindependence rom the University o London in 2007; the rst to be awarded in theNatural Sciences and the rst not to be awarded to an Imperial College academic;and is exceptional in being awarded to a recipient under 40 years o age. The Great British Innovation Vote
was won by Alan Turings UniversalMachine. Following the SecondWorld War Turing worked at NPL,where he revisited the idea o auniversal machine, as proposedin his 1936 paper On computablenumbers, and devised one o the rstpractical designs or a stored-programcomputer, called the Automatic Computing Engine or Pilot ACE (also shortlisted).There were a number o other innovations connected to NPL, including: TonyHoares Quicksort algorithm, Donald Davies invention o packet switching, LouisEssens rst accurate atomic clock and Robert Watson-Watts Radar.
