4 Kankerworm Kill: Redux Loss of leaves weakens trees making them suscep- ble to deadly pathogens. Trees can use backup re- serves to produce new leaves, but over several sea- sons are unable to recover and die. Older trees are parcularly suscepble. ~ Two methods of reducing the worms are inseccide Bt & manual tree banding. Bt is less preferred, having known impacts on all buerflies/moths. Banding is not an eradicaon but a control method, keeping moth/worm numbers in normal ranges & part of the food web controlled by predators. It’s not advisable to apply tanglefoot directly to the tree; it drips/stains and is hard to apply consistently. A flat firm band is best to smear it on & keep it in place. Best pracce: put up bands in fall when convenient, (about chest/head height); add tanglefoot when 90% of leaves have fallen from canopies – post Thanksgiving/early December (otherwise they get stuck and make a bridge for moths to cross over bands). Tanglefoot is harder to spread in the cold; loosen by placing a bucket/tube of it in warm water bath if needed. Bands should be checked & new tanglefoot applied if old fills up with moths; bands should come off by late April/early May when no more moth/worm ac- vity (worms crawl up too) is evident. Bands leſt longer harm the underlying tree and can lead to weakening or infecon/death. Edison Johnson Pool & Rec Center (500 W Murray): Fall Play More Schedule is out! ` Hawaiian Luau ! Abby is our neighborhood farmer. She sells her fresh produce on Tuesdays from 5:30 - 7pm @2707 Shenendoah.

Are your products organic? All the treatments and methods I use in growing are organic.

Do you use any GMO seeds/seedlings/products? I farm GMO – free – and use organic seeds wherever possible.”

Where is your farm? “I'm at Flower Street Farm (@lazy turtle farm)3318 Arthur Minnis Road in Hillsborough.

What is its history/former organic status? It is owned by former farmers, from whom I lease, that employed similar practices and treatments as I do.

How long have you farmed there? This is my first year at FSF, and as a one-woman farmer! This farm gave me a really good feeling – the owners are great, supportive and there is lots of good infrastructure to help me, such as a tiller, irrigation systems, deer fencing, and oth-er things.

Did you train/study to be a farmer? Yes, I earned a Certification in Sustainable Agriculture from Central Carolina Community College. Before that I was in an apprentice program with Calypso Farm – near Fairbanks, Alaska! Altogether, I’ve had four years of experience.

Easy Herbs for Insomnia

FALL 2014

When I can’t sleep I reach for a two herb combo that usually settles me right down. Lemon balm Melissa off-cianalis and skullcap Scutellaria laterifolora are two cooling nervines that are easily grown. Lemon balm has a mild sedative action and can be used for fevers. Skull-cap is stronger, although it is still mild enough to be tak-en as a tonic for the nervous system on a daily basis, and can be used for anxiety, tension, muscle twitching and over excitability. To make a delicious bedtime tea pour 16oz of boiling water over 1tbs of each dried herb. Give a stir and steep until cool enough to drink. Strain your infusion and take 1 cup with 1tsp of honey if you like. Question please to: [email protected]. Jon E. Walker, L. Ac.

Veggies in the Storm

By Mollie Moses (to be sung to the tune of Riders on the Storm)

Veggies in the storm Veggies in the storm, Out of the soil they're born Into a bag they're thrown. The rain is pouring down Thunder is the only sound, Veggies in the storm.

There's a turnip in the road. Its roots are flat like it's been hoed. From a basket it had fell, Wash it long and cook it well, If you eat it for its taste It will not go to waste - Turnip on the road.

The storm is rolling out again Veggies all are wet with rain, There are flowers in a can Onions spread out like a fan, Collards, cabbage and tomatoes, Leeks and lettuce and potatoes, Storm is rolling out again
