1983 Girls basketball was held in four classes with the following number of schools participating per class: A-31; B-61; C-128; D-142. In Class A, the schools were divided into six districts with the district champion qualifying for the state tournament. A point system was used to select the two additional qualifiers. Wild card qualifiers were: Lincoln Southeast and Grand Island In Class B, the schools were divided into eight districts with the district winner qualifying for the state tournament. In Classes C and D, the schools were divided into sixteen districts with the district champions advancing to a two-team playoff and the playoff winner qualifying for the state tournament. Attendance was 37,106.

1984 Basketball was staged in six classes for both boys and girls in 1983-84 and, for the first time, the state basketball tournament included both boys and girls during the same weekend. The boys and girls teams in Classes C2, D1, and D2 competed in the state tournament March 1-2-3, 1984, in Lincoln. The finals were played, six in one day, at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Attendance was 39,588. Classes A, B, and C1 competed the following week, March 7-8-9. The finals again were at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Attendance was 72,224. In Class A, schools were divided into six districts with the district champion qualifying for the state tournament. A point system was used to select two additional qualifiers. In Class B, there were eight districts and the district tournament championship qualifiers for the state tournament. For the other four classes, there were 16 districts and two-team playoffs to determine the eight qualifiers in each class for the state tourney. Boys and girls games were scheduled within each district.

1985 Girls basketball had six classes in 1984-85. Class A had six districts, and the champions qualified for the state tournament. Two teams were also chosen by a wild card point system: Lincoln East and Millard South Class B was divided into eight districts. The other classes had sixteen subdistricts and eight district finals. Each class qualified eight teams to the state tournament which was held February 28, March 1-2, 1985. Attendance was 37,953.

1987 Girls basketball had six classes in 1986-87. Each class qualified eight teams for the State Tournament which was held March 5-6-7, 1987. Class A was divided into six districts with the district champions and two wild card teams selected by a point system qualifying them for the State Tournament. The two wild card teams were Omaha Marian and Millard North. Class B was divided into eight districts with the champion from each district qualifying for the State Tournament. Classes C1, C2, D1, and D2 were divided into sixteen subdistricts and eight district finals. The winners of the district finals in each class advanced to the State Tournament. Attendance was 44, 297.

1988 Girls basketball had six classes in 1987-88. Each class qualified eight teams for the State Tournament which was held March 3-4-5, 1988. Class A was divided into six districts with the district champions and two wild card team selected by a point system qualifying them for the State Tournament. The two wild card teams were North Platte and Lincoln Southeast. Class B was divided into eight districts with the champion from each district qualifying for the State Tournament. 1997 Girls basketball had six classes in 1996-97. Each class qualified eight teams for the State Tournament which was held March 6-7-8, 1997. Classes A and B were divided into six districts with the district champions and two wild card teams selected on the basis of a point system qualifying for the State Tournament. Lincoln Southeast and Norfolk were the wild card teams for Class A; Elkhorn and Alliance were the Class B wild card teams. Classes C1, C2, D1, and D2 were divided into sixteen subdistricts and eight district finals. The winners of the district finals in each class advanced to the State Tournament. Attendance was 53,644.
