Dear Friends,I am sure you have all been reading the newspaper and learned that we came very close to losing 5% of our State funding. For us, this cut would result in a reduction of $22,000 in revenue. The budget at the NSC is made up of manysources of revenue: memberships, fees for various activities, rental income, food service income, fundraisers, grants anddonations.

Just to give you a sense of how hard we work around here to make $22,000, the flea markets require hundreds of hoursof staff and volunteer time for an entire month, literally tons of donated “stuff” from the community, and we make aprofit of about $22,000. We have tried to keep our fees affordable, and they have remained unchanged for several years. We have individuals inour community who live on very limited resources but thanks to fundraising efforts and volunteers, we are able to offermany programs free of charge included with the $30 per year (just 58 cents per week) membership fee. Operatingexpenses are the equivalent of approximately $450 per year per member.

Certainly, we all know that there are individuals in our community that have more resources than others. Each year during our annual appeal, we ask our members for help to make ends meet. Donations from members of our community have helped to make the NSC such a wonderful Center.

If you are able, I am asking you to think about becoming a reoccurring donor of the Center. Please know that your donations to the Center are tax deductible. Ultimately, I would like to grow our “rainy day fund” at the DelawareCommunity Foundation so that we can deal with any reductions from the state. Jessica Feinberg, our DevelopmentDirector and I are available to discuss giving options. A donation can be as simple as sending a monthly check or settingup an automatic payment from your back account. It is also possible to contribute directly to our fund at theCommunity Foundation.

We are so grateful for your generous support each year. We are determined to prepare for the financial challenges thatwe will face next year without impacting the programs and services that we have come to appreciate here at the NSC.

WHY SHouLD I Pre-reGISTer? - Often, in thenewsletter, you will be asked to register at theReception Desk. It is important that you do so forseveral reasons.1. We sometimes cancel a class/trip due to low registration. If you are interested and do not signup, you might miss out on a class/trip that you areinterested in.2. If a class is cancelled and you are not registered,we can’t call you to notify you of the cancellation. Then you come to the Center and are disappointedthat you have made the trip for a cancelled class. 3. Instructors will often ask us for a number of registrations. This helps them to prepare for theclass and make the appropriate number of handouts.4. Room assignments might be able to be adjusted toaccommodate a smaller or larger group, but this toodepends on the number of registrations. ~Thank you!

Community News FITNESS CENTER CORNERThis month the fitness center is talking about preventing falls and driver safety. Falls: The idea ofexercising might lead to fear of falling, it is a greatway to help prevent falls. What can you do to prevent falls and to extend your ability to safelydrive? Exercising is a great way to help preventfalls. Gentle exercises such as walking, aquaticexercise and tai chi reduce the risk of falls byimproving strength, balance, coordination andflexibility. If you are concerned about beginningan exercise program, talk to your doctor. He orshe may suggest a monitored program or referyou to a physical therapist. Driving: Aging doesnot automatically equal total loss of driving ability. There are many things you can do to continue driving safely, including modifying yourcar, the way you drive, and understanding andrectifying physical issues that may interfere withdriving. It is a good idea to have hearing and eyesight checked annually, take an educational courseon driving and talk to your doctor about any concerns you may have about driving.

~ Contributed by Marci Mantegna, fitness Center SiteManager, Cardiokinetics

Did You Know…The cost to our members for a bus ride to theCenter is $1 per ride. The cost to the Center toprovide the ride is @$10 per ride. The cost forDART to provide a paratransit ride is over $35 perride. The paratransit service is often most appro-priate for seniors.

Are THere AnY VALID reASonS To beLIeVe?PArT 2Wednesdays, July 29th – September 2nd 1:00pm – 3:00pmPresenter: Dr. Gerald CulleyTraditional faith is not in fashion these days. Themedia are filled with skepticism toward the Bible. We hear that a book compiled many centuries agomust be riddled with myth, legend, folktale, and outright fiction. To think that it’s a reliable source ofhistory is naïve, and to make it the basis of a personal religious faith is pure folly. This is the 21stcentury: an age of practical politics, personal computing, and social networking! But did you know…A hard look at this ancient book reveals that it is historically accurate, archaeologically supported, andscientifically sound! We will continue our exploration of these paths in asecond six-week series, with further topics, beginningWednesday, July 29, 1-3 pm. Attendance in the spring session is not requiredand the material in this course will be differentthan the material presented in that session.About the Presenter: Dr. Gerald Culley holds a PhDin Classics (with historical emphasis) from theUniversity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill andtaught at the University of Delaware since 1970.
