Dear friends,During a recent discussion about our new Early Memory Loss program, I was asked what we do to helppeople before they get to that “stage”. My response – “everything we do here helps people to prolongtheir independence and postpones signs of decline.” I have attended countless presentations by physicians and other experts in the aging field since I have been here at the Senior Center. They allencourage socialization, mental stimulation, healthy lifestyles, but, without exception, exercise makes thebiggest difference as we age.

Exercise is the best thing you can do for cognitive and physical health. Improving circulation – gettingyour blood flowing – is good for the heart and the brain. We provide opportunities here at the Center forevery level of ability. I try to stress with new members, you work to your level of ability – in whateverclass or activity you enjoy. We are so fortunate to have a variety of options from jazzercise, Pilates andyoga to the fitness center and the therapeutic pool.

Genevieve Gore was instrumental in providing a pool when the Center was built in 1996. She said shehoped for a “place to renew relationships and forge new friendships, a refuge where mind as well as bodyis nourished.” I think that is one of the most wonderful things about the Center. It has evolved into morethan just a place to exercise. It is a wonderful place where people gather and truly care for and supportone another.

Even if you don’t typically come to the Center to exercise, I encourage you to take the long way to theparking lot or enjoy the spacious hallways and lobby area to add more steps to your day.

I wish you all a very Happy and Healthy New Year.

“There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as thougheverything is a miracle.” ~Albert Einstein

ATTenTIon MeMberS: Are you a senior with aspare room in your home? Could you use extraincome? Consider renting out a room to anothersenior! The decline of affordable housing optionsfor seniors leaves many of them looking for roomsto rent. Renting out a spare room provides you withincome and your tenant with affordable housing. Itcan make good financial sense. You may advertise Rooms for Rent on our bulletinboard located near the kitchen. Or advertise if youneed a room to rent. Leave your advertisement atthe Reception Desk for it to be posted. The NSC is making this available as a resource tomembers. The NSC bears no responsibility for anyrental arrangement.

A POD (Pay onDeath) form can be completed at your bank to letthem know who you would like to inherit a bankaccount. A TOD (Transfer on Death) is similar butapplies to investment accounts. Both are simple tomake and happen outside probate.

gIVIng MATTerSYou may have seen Fred Sears pieces in the SundayNews Journal entitled “Giving Matters”. He hasbeen writing about the benefits of planned giving, agift through a bequest or designating a non-profit asa beneficiary of an account, and contributing to anon-profit through an endowment fund. The Newark Senior Center has an endowment fundat the Delaware Community Foundation. For morethan a decade, members of our community havecontributed directly to the endowment fund helpingto build the principal. This endowment helps us tofund unmet capital needs as well as serve as a rainyday fund for operating expenses. Contributions ofthis nature have helped us to expand and maintainthis wonderful facility. The endowment also helpsus to keep fees as affordable as possible for membersand provide a food service program far below theactual cost. Contributions can be made directly to the endowment fund in the form of cash / check, gifts ofappreciated stock or as part of an estate plan. Pleasecontact Carla Grygiel at 737-2336 x15 or DaveFleming, Delaware Community Foundation at 571-8004 for more information. Thank you for considering a gift to our endowmentfund. Individuals who contribute to the endowmentbecome part of our Legacy Society, recognizing theimportance of gifts that secure the future of theCenter.

WHy SHouLD I Pre-regISTer? - Often, in thenewsletter, you will be asked to register at theReception Desk. It is important that you do so forseveral reasons.1. We sometimes cancel a class/trip due to low registration. If you are interested and do not signup, you might miss out on a class/trip that you areinterested in.2. If a class is cancelled and you are not registered,we can’t call you to notify you of the cancellation. Then you come to the Center and are disappointedthat you have made the trip for a cancelled class. 3. Instructors will often ask us for a number of registrations. This helps them to prepare for theclass and make the appropriate number of handouts.4. Room assignments might be able to be adjusted toaccommodate a smaller or larger group, but this toodepends on the number of registrations. Please help us to help you and register at the

Reception Desk for the classes and programs you are interested in. Thank you!

FITNESS CENTER CORNERJanuary! You know what that means…it’s time to make some resolutions! Here are a few tips tomake them stick!• The most important one of all: WrITe THeM DoWn. You’re more likely to keep them if you canrefer back to them.• be specific: make your resolutions clear and measurable (I’m going to exercise for 30 minutes, 5 daysa week).• Post it: put the copy in writing in multiple places so you can be visually reminded often.• Make an action plan: elaborate on exactly how you are going to achieve your goal.• Make a timeline: give yourself little dates for which you will have achieved something by, be sure togive yourself adequate time.• Share your goals with someone: they can help motivate you and possibly even modify something intheir lives to make reaching your goals easier (example: if you gave up sweets that person might stopoffering you them).
