NATIONAL HIV TESTING DAY
Saturday, June 27
HIV, human immunodeficiency virus, is the virus that can lead
to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, or AIDS. There is no
cure for HIV—it is a life-long infection.
The U.S. Preventative Task Force recommends routine HIV
testing for adolescents and adults, ages 15-65, and all pregnant
women. The Catholic Church advocates early HIV testing with
universal access for all people living with HIV, not just to
medicines, but to full life with dignity, free from discrimination
and stigma.
Why test? Research has shown that early testing and early treatment with
anti-HIV medications can lower the number of new infections
in a community.
Although the number of new infections in the U.S. has
remained relatively stable for nearly 20 years, 48% of new
infections occur in the South with a disproportionate number of
African American males and Latinos (both men and women)
being affected.
Georgia is ranked 5th in the nation for people newly diagnosed
with HIV. Nearly 2/3 of people infected live in Metro Atlanta.
Grady Memorial Health System, which primarily serves
residents of Fulton and DeKalb counties, released 2 year data
from their routine HIV testing program, Focus HIV, in March
2015. Nearly 50% of persons newly diagnosed with HIV in the
ER also have AIDS. 1% of ER patients tested positive for
HIV—an average of 2-3 new infections every day.
Outbreaks of HIV infections are also occurring in historically
low risk areas for HIV because of injection drug use. As of
May 2015, 160 individuals were diagnosed with HIV in
southeastern Indiana in a community of 4,200 persons.
Many health departments and community clinics are offering
free HIV tests during June. Go to http://gettested.cdc.gov and
enter your zip code to find a convenient location near you.
Do your part—know the facts and pledge to be part of an AIDS
-free generation! Learn the basics about HIV
(http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/basics/transmission.html) and how to
prevent it (http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/basics/prevention.html).

VOLUNTEERS FOR ENGLISH CLASSES NEEDED
Starting in July Make a big impact in someone's life! Help adults learn to speak
English by serving one morning or evening each week in
Chamblee. The students are friendly, interesting and grateful
for the time volunteers offer. The students attend two classes a

with the lead instructor for the first hour, in one large group.
Then they are divided into smaller groups, based on their ability

hours. During this time, our goal is for the students to speak as
much as possible.
Classes are offered Monday, Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday

FAITH FORMATION TEAM
Faith Formation at IHM has a unique name: G.I.F.T. (Growing In Faith Together)
As our new season approaches we have immediate openings for individuals desiring
to be part of bringing the G.I.F.T. of faith to the lives of fellow parishioners and
themselves. Become a part of this fast growing community. Most positions require
no previous experience and offer the compensation of satisfaction, knowledge, and
an opportunity to serve that pays for a lifetime.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
By nature of our Baptism, we are all called to share our gifts with the Church. We
are looking for adults and high school teens who are interested in assisting on
Saturdays and Sundays sessions. It takes many people, working together in many
ways, for the parish religious education program to work well. Your volunteer
commitment might be long-term or one-time, but everyone's participation is
valuable. Here are brief descriptions of volunteer roles you might consider:
Catechists (individuals willing the share their faith with children, youth,
adults.) NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! Responsible for planning, teaching
and managing a class of children for a weekly period of 1.5 hours. Use several
kinds of interactive methods, including lecture, discussion, text, activities, film
and video, games, worksheets, etc. Training materials provided along with a
sense of belonging and well being when you share your faith with others.
Requires Safe Environment Training and Background Check.
Children K-6th sessions as well as adults are held on Saturdays (2:00-3:30
p.m.) and Sundays (10:15-11:15 a.m.)
Middle School Group (6th-8th) meet on Wednesdays from 7:00-8:30 p.m.
High School Group (9th-12th) meet on Sundays 3:00-4:30p.m.
We are also seeking individuals who speak Spanish to work with our young
children and adults. Which age group would you like to work with?
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) We are seeking active
practicing Catholics that are willing to share their journey of faith with
individuals wishing to find out more about the Catholic way of life. RCIA group
meets on Sunday mornings from 10:15a.m. - 11:30 a.m. August through May.
Please consider being a part of a sponsor pool.
ALSO, we have a RCIA inquiry session on Wednesday, June 24. Are you thinking about becoming Catholic or returning to the Church? Or perhaps
you're just curious about why we do some of the things we do, or what the
Church really teaches on certain subjects. We have a small faith community that
will meet monthly this summer to help you explore these questions. Join us in
the lower level of the church from 7:30-9:00 p.m. You do not have to register,
simply come and explore the basics of Catholic faith in a friendly, informal
setting. Contact Drew Denton ([email protected]) for more information.

POSITION VACANCY
G.I.F.T. - FAITH FORMATION AT IHM
7 IHMATLANTA.ORG 7
FORMACION EN LA FE
Elija una de las siguientes actividades para
seguir reflexionando sobre las lecturas del
domingo:
ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK
Choose one of the following activities as a
way to further reflect on the Sunday
readings:
Jesus told the sea to “quiet” and “be
still,” and it was. What storms do you
need Jesus to calm for you?
Have a family discussion about major
storms that have occurred in the United
States, and their locations. Find a time to
pray together. Pray for those affected by
major storms.
Read today’s Gospel, Mark 4:35-41, with
your family. Talk about how you would
have felt if you were with Jesus and the
disciples during the storm. Make a poster
for your refrigerator. On the poster, draw
a boat and have each person in the family
write his or her name on the boat. At the
bottom of the poster, put this caption:
“Where two or three are gathered
together, there am I in their midst.”

STEWARDSHIP
SPACE FOR ADS
June 21: Start your own endowment fund to benefit your favorite parish ministry Starting your own fund to benefit the parish is a wonderful way for you to memorialize or honor a loved one. It
only takes $5,000 to start this fund and when the fund grows to $25,000 distributions will be made to the parish in
the name of your loved one. Some people start a fund and then add $5,000 a year to it and others start a fund and
friends and relatives add to it due to their love of the person being honored and their love of the parish. If you
would like more information about creating a personal endowment please visit our website: www.cfnga.org.

TRUST GOD WITH THE FULLNESS OF LIFE Learning to grow in trustfulness of God is a big-picture process as well as one that touches the little details
of our lives. Place yourself in God’s caring embrace each day; end the day by offering prayers of
gratitude and petition, by asking for forgiveness, and relying on God’s mercy. Doing so daily builds a
foundation of trust in moments of sunlight and in times of darkness.

Te amo, aunque me olvides o me rechaces.
Te amo aunque no me ames.
