Issue No. 2 21 December 2012

Did you know? To move from IBU Cup to World Cup, an athlete must record one result in a Trimester which is less than 15% behind the average of the first 3 placegetters in an IBU Cup race. International Happenings IBU World Cup results have been amazingly diverse so far. While World Champion Martin Fourcade (FRA) has continued to be in the mix of those on the podium, it has taken until the Pursuit race in WC No 3 in Pokljuka (SLO) for Emil Hegle Svendsen (NOR) to make it to the podium. Jakov Fak from Slovakia has taken a step up with 3 podium finishes this Trimester, while Anton Shipulin (RUS) has experienced the highs (3rd in WC No 1 Pursuit Ostersund SWE) and the lows (81st in Sprint in WC No 3).

For the women, Mriram Gossner (GER) finally reached all the potential she had been showing for the past two seasons and despite missing 5 in the Pursuit at WC No 3, was still so fast on her skis that she won anyway. Gossner, who attended the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games as a XC Skier, shows the importance of being able to ski fast as a Biathlete and continuing to race hard no matter what your shooting performance might be. Tora Berger (NOR), after dominating in Ostersund and Hochfilzen, seemed to tire for WC No 3 and did not have a podium finish until the mass start.

The WC Circuit now takes a well-earner break over Christmas and all the action will be back again on January 3 when WC No 4 kicks off in Oberhof (GER) on January 5.

Cameron Morton and D a n i e l Wa l k e r l e a v e Australia...

Cam Morton and Daniel Walker recently left AUS to join their fellow NSW team mates in Europe. They will head straight to Ridnaun in Italy where Cameron will race IBU Cup No 3 and Daniel will begin his acclimatization from AUS heat to European snow. For the rest of the season, Cameron is set to race IBU Cups with Dyllan Harmer and Lucy Glanville, while Daniel will be competing in World J u n i o r s a n d E u r o p e a n Championships.

Amelia McGuiness Snowsports Development Fund

The Amelia McGuiness Australian Snowsports Development Foundation is recognised and commended throughout the snowsports community for its contribution and support of up-and-coming athletes. The Foundation was estbalished, in honour of Amelia McGuiness, a gifted and talented athlete and student, who tragically died in a skiing accident on the slopes at the Perisher Resort, whilst there to participate in the NSW Interschools Snowsports Championships in 2009. The AMASDF is dedicated to providing practical support (for equipment, training and resources - not cash grants) to up-and-coming winter snowsports athletes from the age of 10 to 19 years old, across all snowsports disciplines including disabled snowsports. The AMASDF is supported by the Australian Sports Federation (ASF) through the Australian Sport Incentive Program, which enables donations of $2 or more to the ASF/AMASDF to be tax deductable. In 2012, NSW Biathletes have once again been the recipients of grants from the Amelia McGuiness Foundation, this year including Lucy Glanville, Damon Morton, Hamish Roberts and Sabrina Howell. Christmas activities in Sveg...

It's not all hard work and no fun for the NSW Biathlon boys in Sveg. The boys built a gingerbread house during an inside training session when the weather plunged to -23 degrees.

NSW Cross Country biathlete chosen for development camp...

Sabrina Howell has been selected to attend an IBU Development Camp in Obertilliach, Austria. Sabrina will be one of over 100 international athletes who will attend the week long camp and receive expert tuition on shooting and racing from expert IBU coaches. After the camp, Sabrina will be racing in a number of Regional Biathlon races in Austria and Italy before heading to Canada to join NSW Cross Country team mates Matthew Bull and Meg Watkins for some further training and racing under the guidance of the Sovereign Lake Nordic Ski Club in BC, Canada.

And so Trimester 1 finishes...

IBU Trimester 1 is now finished with some very solid and promising results from all NSW biathletes currently in Europe. All athletes competing for AUS - Alex Almoukov, Dyllan Harmer, Cam Morton and Lucy Glanville achieved World Championship qualifying results and all qualified to continue racing in Trimester 2. And of course, Alex Almoukov's history making Pursuit qualification was the highlight of the Trimester. Trimester 2 begins in early January with the WC Team at Oberhof (GER) and the IBU Cup Team at Otepaa (EST) while the NSW boys will be in Sweden will commence their Alpen Cup
