2 NSW Falls Prevention Network Forum

NSW FALLS PREVENTION NETWORKThe NSW Falls Prevention Network has existed since 1993.

Purpose The purpose of the NSW Falls Prevention Network is to:

1. Support networking of people and organisations working to prevent falls and harm from falls among older people in NSW (for example, health professionals, government, community and residential aged care providers, non-government organisations and researchers).

2. Support sharing of falls prevention resources and initiatives developed by Network members and exploration of opportunities to undertake collaborative projects and/or combine resources in joint initiatives.

3. Support access to and dissemination of information on local and international falls prevention research findings, policy and practice initiatives, tools and resources.

4. Support the communication and implementation of the NSW Ministry of Health Falls Prevention Policy through Network activities.

5. Ensure the Network remains valued, respected and responsive to the needs of current and potential members and key stakeholders.

6. Promote prevention of falls among older people as a key health issue.

Goals• Contribute towards falls prevention and reduction in the incidence of preventable falls injuries among

older people across New South Wales.• Support consultation, cooperation and liaison between services, facilities and all key stakeholders.• Support key falls prevention priorities for NSW and provide information and resources to support

strategies for implementation. • Promote and disseminate research activities in relation to falls injury prevention.

Plenary Presentations at this forum will be filmed and a DVD produced. This will be distributed following the forum, and you will be notified by the NSW Falls Prevention Network website and email list.

PLENARY SPEAKER ABSTRACTS AND BIOGRAPHIESPLENARY SESSION 1Pam Albany Guest Lecture - this lecture honours the late Pam Albany, a passionate advocate for accident and injury prevention in her various work roles. She was the key facilitator for promoting evidence-based practice through the NSW Falls Policy and NSW Falls Prevention Program and Network.

The 2016 Pam Albany Guest Lecturer is Professor Cathie Sherrington, NHMRC Senior Research Fellow, The George Institute for Global HealthExercise for falls prevention: evidence update and implementation challengesPrevious meta-analyses have found that exercise can prevent falls in older people. This presentation will present a recently updated analysis that aimed to test whether this effect is still present when new trials are added and to explore whether certain characteristics of the trial design, sample or intervention are associated with greater fall prevention effects. The poor participation of older adults in exercise programs likely to prevent falls and strategies to address this will also be discussed.

Professor Cathie Sherrington is a Professorial Research Fellow and NHMRC Senior Research Fellow at the George Institute for Global Health and Sydney Medical School, The University of Sydney. She leads the 18-person Ageing and Disability Research Group within the Institute’s Musculoskeletal Division. Her research focuses on falls prevention and exercise interventions in older people and those with disability. She has published 160 journal articles, has received over $15 million in competitive grant funding and was one of the initiators of PEDro: the Physiotherapy Evidence Database. Prior to completing a PhD and Masters of Public Heath, Cathie was a physiotherapist in aged care and rehabilitation settings.

Professor Stephen Lord, NHMRC Senior Principal Research Fellow, Falls, Balance and Injury Research Centre, Neuroscience Research Australia Falls Prevention research update – medications for fall prevention, vitamin D – friend or foe, gait adaptability and systematic review evidence for step training as a fall prevention strategy

This presentation will review recent studies on fall risk factors and fall prevention. Topics from recent studies and reviews that will be discussed will include:

• summaries of two recent randomised controlled trials that have examined the efficacy of medications for reducing fall risk in fail older people and people with Parkinson’s disease

• an update on the evidence for the role of vitamin D in fall prevention

• description of a new test of gait adaptability that measures ability to avoid everyday falls

• a summary of a recent systematic review of the effectiveness of voluntary and reactive step training interventions for preventing falls

• best-bet interventions for preventing falls based on randomised controlled trials; an update of systematic review evidence.

Professor Stephen Lord is a NHMRC Senior Principal Research Fellow in the Falls, Balance and Injury Research Centre at Neuroscience Research Australia. He has published over 300 papers in the areas of applied physiology, instability, falls and fractures in older people and is acknowledged as a leading international researcher in his field. His research follows two main themes: the identification of physiological risk factors for falls and the development and evaluation of falls prevention strategies. A key aspect of this research has been the design, implementation and evaluation of exercise programs for the general population of older people as well as for those identified as being at increased risk of falls, i.e. people with Parkinson’s disease, stroke, dementia and frailty. His methodology and approach to fall-risk assessment has been adopted by many researchers and clinicians across the world and he is actively engaged in initiatives aimed at implementing falls prevention evidence into policy and practice.

PLENARY SESSION 2Dr Lara Harvey, NHMRC Early Career Research Fellow, Falls, Balance and Injury Research Centre, NeuRAFall related injury in people with dementiaPeople with dementia have higher hospitalisation rates than those of similar age without dementia, and injury (predominantly fall-related injury) is the most common cause of hospitalisation for people with dementia. Despite this relatively little is known about the hospitalisation experience of people with dementia who sustain a fall. This presentation will explore the impact of dementia on the pattern, clinical care, health outcomes and economic costs of older people who are hospitalised for a fall-related injury.

Dr Lara Harvey is a NHMRC Early Career Research Fellow in the Falls, Balance and Injury Research Centre at NeuRA. Lara is an injury epidemiologist and her research areas of interest include population-based trends in injury and the evaluation of population-based policies and regulations/legislation. Lara’s current focus is on exploring the influence of dementia on hospitalisations and health outcomes for people who have sustained a fall-related injury.

Professor Susan Kurrle, Geriatrician, Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital and Curran Chair in Health Care of Older People, Faculty of Medicine, University of Sydney. Dementia Collaborative Research ProjectsThe NHMRC Cognitive Decline Partnership Centre is a 5 year, $25 million collaborative project between consumers, aged care providers, clinicians, and researchers. Its major objectives are implementation of current knowledge and synthesis and dissemination of research related to cognitive and related functional decline. This presentation outlines the work of the Partnership Centre with particular emphasis on work related to falls and functional decline.

Professor Susan Kurrle is a Geriatrician at Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital in Northern Sydney and Batemans Bay Hospital in Southern NSW, and she holds the Curran Chair in Health Care of Older People in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Sydney. She has had a long interest and involvement in practice and research in prevention of falls and fall-related injuries, in the use of exercise to improve fitness and prevent frailty, and in dementia. She leads the NHMRC Cognitive Decline Partnership Centre which has a number of projects addressing functional decline and falls in dementia.
