The Presidential Address

All the best for BrisbaneIN FEBRUARY, WE PUT in some good performances for the AMA Postal Relays, which include both track and field events. Rotary was very helpful in allowing track relays as part of their Saturday afternoon program in February. The results for the NSW Throws Pentathlon Championships on February 27 were also used for Postal Relay entries, as mentioned in some detail below. In all, we submitted 48 entries (including 19 track relays), up from 38 last year, with 10 performances better than the previous ‘best-on-record’ mark. Lots of NSW records were set also. Given the level of interest in relays, I hope that we achieve some great results in the track relays at the Nationals in Brisbane.

On February 27, we held the Throws Pentathlon Championships at Campbelltown. The results and further information are elsewhere in this edition of The Waratah. One special feature of the day was that the new 56lb weight that the club has purchased was broken in (probably about 200 throws, counting warm-ups). This monster

implement did create a lot of interest and we will be including a 56lb event in the Dunbar Series of winter throws this year. The details of the Dunbar Series will be circulated soon, but there will be opportunities in May and June for throwers to sharpen their skills prior to the World Championships in Sacramento.

I trust that many members will be heading to Brisbane for the 2011 AMA National Championships. Many of you are seasoned campaigners and some of you are making your debut at Nationals this year. I wish everyone every success that they hope for. I trust that the preparation you have put in will pay off.

Valmai Loomes is the Team Manager for Brisbane. On the basis of a very successful event in Perth last year, we will be organising a Team NSW get-together on Saturday night during the Nationals.I hope that many will attend and make this a convivial event.

THE ALWAYS BUSY M50 group provided a nail-biter finish in the throws pentathlon, with Peter Reed (3108 points) edging out field pentathlon champion and NSW record holder Voitek Klimiuk by just six points. Voitek Klimiuk by just six points. Voitek KlimiukRobert Hanbury-Brown, these days a more frequent member of the 3000-point club, wasn’t far behind in third on 3044 points.Only five points separated Gavin Murray(3229 points) and Geoff Crumpton (3224 points) in the M55s.

At her first attempt, newcomer Rebecca Nicol, daughter of Greg Nicol and sister of Melissa Bonser, won gold in both the W30 throws pentathlon and 56lb event (full results can be found on the NSWMA website).

56LB RECORD FESTNSWMA’s acquisition of a 56lb weight proved a hit bonus event at the 2011 Throws Pentathlon titles at Campbelltown on February 27, producing some tight comps, several sore backs, an Australian record and seven NSW records.l Sharon Kingston (W35) improved her own State record of 1.52m to 1.55m. l Lisa Mumberson and Melissa Bonser(W40) swapped the lead – and the State record – several times before Melissa snatched the win with her final throw of 3.71m. Lisa had set the previous record of 3.23m in 2009. l In the W45s, Gabi Watts’ 3.59m bettered Adriana van Bockel’s NSW record of 2.75m, set in 2001.l In the W50s, Wendy Hord set a NSW record, her first, throwing 3.23m to better Adriana van Bockel’s 2.98m, set in 2003.l In the M30 age group, Warren Jonesbroke the Australian and NSW record of 5.41m, set by Anatoly Kirievsky in 2010, with a final throw of 5.82m.l Stuart Gyngell (M45) added more than 2 metres to Lajos Joni’s 2004 mark of 7.05m with a throw of 9.14m.l Noel Donohoe (M70) added 5cm to his own State record of 4.18m in round two, then added another centimetre to that, finishing with 4.24m.

FOURTH WORLD RECORD FOR KEITHKeith Bateman added to his M55 mile, 3000m and 5000m world records when he destroyed the world 10,000m record at the NSW Open championships at SOPAC on March 26. Keith’s time of 31:51.86 improved the 2006 mark of Britain’s Michael Hager (32m 27.7s) by a massive 35 seconds.

Several more NSW records tumbled in the 10,00m at the titles.l Rosemary Roediger smashed the State W55 record of 46:05.77, stopping the clock at 40:34.32.l Nancy Newsome’s 38:11.24 surpassed the 25-year-old mark W45 record of Norma Ducker (39.22.0).l Don Mathewson set his second NSW record of 2011 when he lopped half a minute from Adolf Blonner’s 10-year-old mark in clocking 38:22.60.l Belinda Martin took a chunk off the 15-year-old W35 NSW record of 37.27.0, running 35:29.85. Angela Williamswas also faster than the previous mark, finishing in 36:57.45.

Belinda joined NSWMA only recently, but is cutting a swathe through the record books already. A day after her 10,000m record, she took three seconds off the Australian 1500m record with a time of 4:26.15. And on March 5 in Melbourne, Belinda’s 16.12.12 5000m broke the 17-year-old AR by 14 seconds.

STOP PRESS!

MOST OF US ARE FAMILIAR with MOST OF US ARE FAMILIAR with MOST OF US ARE FAMILIARthe saying “Monkey see, monkey do”, a phrase often used to imply imitation with lack of understanding. In technical sports such as some events in athletics, imitation of experts is a crucial part of learning.

One of the first things a coach must learn to do is to correctly demonstrate positions and actions so the athlete can copy them. This is easier for coaches who have themselves been accomplished athletes, more challenging for those who were not. Alan Launder, one of Australia’s most respected pole vault and javelin coaches, was a left-handed cricketer who had to learn to demonstrate throws positions right-handed to suit the majority of athletes.

Another principle coaches are often taught to pass on to their athletes is “Don’t watch the other competitors”, the notion being that watching others performing the action differently or incorrectly might somehow “mess with the athlete’s head” and distract them from their “own game”. What follows is a possible explanation for this.

MIRROR NEURONESMirror neurones are a class of brain cells proposed to exist as a result of research on monkeys starting in the 1980s. Electrodes placed in a monkey’s brain indicated similar neurone activity when the monkey saw a person pick up a piece of food, as well as when the monkey picked up the food. Due to the similarity of monkey and human brains, it was suggested that mirror neurones might be found in humans too.

Although it’s not generally possible to study human brains in the same fashion, brain-imaging experiments using functional magnetic resonance imaging, (fMRI) have shown that a portion of the brain is active when a person performs an action and also when a person sees another individual performing an action. Some studies on patients with epilepsy using electrodes also indicated the presence of mirror-type neurones.

The possible existence of mirror neurones is thought to give an anatomical/physiological basis to the

practice of learning by imitation. It could well be that the same portions of the brain are triggered by watching someone perform an event or action as by doing it.

Now if we watch someone performing an event or action incorrectly or significantly differently to what we might do or have practised, different neurone patterns could be triggered that might overlap with or disrupt our own previously laid-down patterns. Renowned German coach Klaus Bartonietz recounts a story about world champion javelin thrower Mirela Manjani of Greece, who threw poorly in a competition leading up to the world titles, many metres below her best. When asked what had happened, she replied, “I watched the Russian girl throwing and it fouled up my technique”. Her explanation seems to fit with the notion of mirror neurones.

The moral of the story? Find coaches who can correctly demonstrate positions and actions, watch people who do things correctly, avoid watching people who are unskilled and/or doing the action very differently, especially during competition.

Mark Johnston looks at mirror neurones and why watching other athletes might harm your own performance.

Cracking Country championshipsTWO STATE RECORDS were bettered and one equalled at the annual Country Championships at Glendale on January 21-22. At Country, events are contested in 10-year age groups.

AMA Winter Throws champion and multiple NSW record-holder Ron Simcockmultiple NSW record-holder Ron Simcockmultiple NSW record-holder(M75) improved his own M75 hammer mark to 38.41m and added 5cm to the high jump record, leaping 1.25m – a height that would have seen him ranked 15th in the world in 2010. Ron also won all the other throws.

Also high jumping well was Judy Brown, who equalled the W60 State record (0.95m) she co-holds for the third time. Judy, who recently won her 500th medal in Masters competition, promised she’d try to hold the record outright at the Police Games this month and was successful in her quest. Judy, always busy at the championships, took home medals from the sprints, jumps, throws and walk.

A welcome sight was the return to competition of Mary Thomas, who won the W65 javelin, discus and shot.

Christine Shaw (W50) had a good championships, winning the 100m, 200m, all the jumps, the shot and javelin.

Sprint queen Gianna MogentaleSprint queen Gianna MogentaleSprint queen (W45), having a quiet season by her standards, won the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and triple jump. A strong headwind in the majority of the sprints during the championships foiled any chance of quick times.

Janie Carter (W40), after medalling in the 400m, high and long jumps, was dominant in the throws, taking the shot, discus, javelin and hammer.

Cristine Suffolk (W40) took out the Cristine Suffolk (W40) took out the Cristine Suffolk800m/1500m double.

In the M40s, Edward van der Jagtclaimed the high jump/long jump double, while throws champ Stuart Gyngell took Stuart Gyngell took Stuart Gyngellthe shot put, discus and hammer.

In the M50s, Todd Devery won the 100m, Todd Devery won the 100m, Todd Devery200m, 400m, 400m hurdles, long jump and finished second in the 800m and high jump.

Wollongong strongman Peter Reed was dominant in the M50 throws, taking gold in the shot, discus and hammer.

Stuart Hayward took the M60 200m, 400m and 800m titles and landed a silver in the 100m.

NSWMA welcomes all country athletes to compete at both the State titles at Blacktown on April 9-10 and for NSW at the annual AMA championships, this year to be held in Brisbane from April 21-24.

DON’S PARTYNSWMA Athlete of the Year in 2010, Don Mathewson, had a best 1500m time of 4:54.21 in 2010, which saw him ranked No 1 in the world in the M65 age group. Nearly a year later, and with the 2011 world titles in Sacramento on the horizon, Don lowered his PB to 4:52.86 at SOPAC on February 19, setting a new NSW record in the process.

RELAY RECORDS TUMBLE AS RUNNERS MAKE THE MOST OF THE POSTSeveral NSW records entered the books as a result of the annual AMA Postal Relays in February, the nationwide competition in which NSW’s results have grown stronger each year.l In the W45s, a team of Julie Forster, Gianna Mogentale, Lynda Douglass and Annette Mead set a new State record of 52.8, bettering the old mark of 56.28, set in 2009.l In the W55 age group, Jill Taylor, Kerrie Jones, Nancy Lloyd and Jill Senior set an inaugural 4 x 100m record of 1:21.3 on February 12 at Chatswood. The following Saturday, Rosemary Roediger, Nancy Lloyd, Jill Senior and Joanne Cowan set an inaugural 4 x 400m NSW record, clocking 5:53.4. l In the M70s, Nick Bastas, Ron Wills, Jack Sturzaker and David Chantrill bettered the David Chantrill bettered the David Chantrill4 x 100m time of 1:05.20 – set by Charles Hobden, Richard Hughes, Morris David and Brian Hamilton in 2009 – by two-tenths of a second, running 1:05.00 at Chatswood on February 12. On the 19th, Fred Daniels joined Nick, Ron and David to set an inaugural 4 x 400m NSW record of 5:30.9. On February 26, John Spinney joined Nick, Ron and David to set John Spinney joined Nick, Ron and David to set John Spinneyan inaugural 4 x 800m NSW record, clocking 13:32.3.

RYDE: LIKE THE WINDWith the lightest member of the team weighing in at a solid 83 kilos – the all-Ryde quartet of Voitek Klimiuk, Robert Hanbury-Brown, Simon Butler-White and Andrew Atkinson-Howatt (enough with the hyphenated surnames already!) bettered the State 4 x 800m record (set by Andrew, Robert, Les Gonye and Daryl Ellis at 12:29.22 in 2010), clocking 11:54.3 at the Postal Relays at Chastwood on February 26. The foursome ascribed their record-breaking run to “putting in several minutes of training” – and not eating any pies during the race.

JO GETS FASTER... THEN VERY FAST INDEEDJoanne Cowan (W55) bettered her own State 10km record, set last November, by nine seconds in clocking 45:04 at the Striders’monthly race in 40C heat at Homebush on February 5. Jo then demolished that time at Manly on March 5 with a great time of 42:11. The NSW W55 record for the 10,000m on the track is 46:05 – ripe for the claiming, Jo.

WALK THIS WAYLynette Smith set her second State walks record since moving into the W40 age group last December when she broke the NSW State 3000m record at SOPAC on February 3. Her time of 16:50.63 improved Suzanne Brown’s 18:01.75, set in October 2009. Lynette broke Suzanne’s 1500m walk record at Blacktown on January 5, clocking 8:00.4.

DISCUS INFERNOLynette Smith added 30cm to the 12-year-old NSW W40 discus record held by Heike Forth at Blacktown on February 26, throwing 37.46m. The throw brought Lyn’s fourth State record this year: in the discus, 1500m and 3000m walks, and field pentathlon.

3000M RECORD TAKES NANCY’S FANCYNancy Newsome (W45) took a hefty 40 seconds off Margaret Beardslee’s 3000m state record at SOPAC on February 26, running 10:35.99.

TWO TOP TENS Brendan Davies (M30) improved his State 10km record from 34:22 to 33:57 at Manly on March 5. Brendan also holds the half marathon and marathon records. In the same race, just four seconds back, Paul McLarnon (M40) was bettering Stuart Paterson’s 12-year-old record of 34:08, running 34:01. Paul also holds the NSW M40 half marathon record.

HIGH THEREJudy Brown (W60) added 1cm to her State high jump record, leaping 0.96m at the annual Police Games at Blacktown on March 12. At the Lake Macquarie Masters Games on March 19, Judy improved her own 1500m walk record, clocking 11:00.7.
