Australia’s Top End is renowned for its balmy tropical climate, blazing sunsets and vibrant multicultural lifestyle. With Darwin having been identified by publisher Lonely Planet as one of the Top Ten Cities in the world to visit, the region also encompasses World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park, the cascading waterfalls of Litchfield National Park, and the majestic Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) National Park.

Over 3,900 rooms across a range of hotels, resorts and wilderness retreats, coupled with state-of-the-art sophisticated conference facilities, make Darwin and the Top End an ideal destination for Business Events. A variety of boutique meeting venues, off-site outdoor dining options for social events, and proximity to some of Australia’s most

pristine wilderness areas enhance the appeal. Extensive domestic and international aviation networks ensure easy access, whether for conferences, exhibitions, meetings, incentives or product launches.

The Top End offers pre and post touring activities like nowhere else. Options include scenic flights along the coastline or over national parks, sport fishing, harbour cruising, discovering Darwin’s WWII heritage, multi-cultural markets, movies under the stars, four-wheel driving off-road adventures, or amazing interactive cultural and wildlife experiences - all adding ‘wow factor’ to your next event.

DAY ONE

Arrive in Darwin in the tropical ‘Top End’ of the Northern Territory. Overnight at a luxury villa-style resort set on a lush tropical lagoon, amongst tropical beachside gardens. Enjoy a leisurely afternoon by the lagoon, before indulging in a luxury spa treatment. Alternatively, take an escorted walking tour of Darwin with a local Indigenous guide. A visit to the famous Mindil Beach Sunset Markets offers more than 250 stalls with exotic food tastes, an amazing array of handmade craft, crocodile products, indigenous art and unique jewellery. An exclusive dining area set aside for your group provides views of a breathtaking tropical NT sunset over water.

DAY TWO

Start the day with a scenic flight over the pristine Kakadu National Park wilderness. A chauffeured 4WD transfer then takes you to one of the Territory’s renowned wilderness lodges, where you will stay for the evening. A fascinating rock art excursion en-route before arrival at the lodge, where you will experience the abundant wildlife of the seasonal floodplain including crocodiles, buffalo and hundreds of species of birds.

For the more active, there are quad-biking, hiking or fishing adventures. For those wishing to relax and wind down, there are cooking classes or just lazing by the infinity pool. Dinner is a degustation feast featuring Territory specialties such as prime beef and the renowned Barramundi fish, with special exotic bush-tucker touches.

DAY THREE

The day starts with a spectacular sunrise wetlands cruise on the calm waters of the nearby ‘billabong’, followed by a gourmet breakfast. An escorted walk to the edge of the wetlands enables you to sample a ‘bush tucker’ morning tea and gain insights into an ancient culture, accompanied by your Indigenous guide.

Back in Darwin, a light lunch is served at a special location overlooking the sparkling waters of the Arafura Sea. Before you head home, take time to browse through Darwin’s high-end boutiques where a range of unique, luxury goods including pearls and designer crocodile-skin accessories can be considered for gifts and mementos.

Optional activities in the Top End include extended exploration of the rich culture and pristine wilderness of Kakadu and Lichfield National Parks, staying in a unique hotel shaped like a crocodile and enjoying a night-time cruise of the world-renowned Yellow Water Billabong.

central australia incentive itinerary

DAY ONE

Arrive at Alice Springs in the heart of Australia’s Outback. Visit one of the many local galleries renowned for their Aboriginal art and enjoy lunch with the artists, who will provide unique insights into their 50,000 year old Indigenous culture. Afternoon activities can include quad bike touring around a cattle station, or playing eighteen holes on one of Australia’s leading desert golf courses. Dinner is an outdoor barbecue at the foot of the spectacular Eastern MacDonnell Ranges. Interactive entertainment includes preparing Australian damper bread and billy tea on the camp-fire, a cattleman’s demonstration and perhaps some energetic line-dancing.

DAY TWO

An early morning hot air balloon flight over the desert landscape greets the sunrise and is followed by a champagne breakfast. The Western MacDonnell Ranges landmark, Simpsons Gap, is the location for an outback-style lunch created by an Indigenous chef, followed by a cultural guided walk through the National Park. The ‘on stage’ setting of the Cultural Precinct theatre is where the evening’s dinner is sited, with the banquet complemented by an impressive performance from an Indigenous children’s drumming group.

DAY THREE

Fly to Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) and see how these spectacular rock formations emphasise the vastness of this amazing landscape. Check in to your award-winning eco-sensitive resort. Activity options can include an adrenaline-filled Harley Davidson bike ride around the perimeter of Uluru or participate in a dot-painting workshop. A gentle ride on desert camels along a beautiful dune trail sets the scene for an amazing dinner finale, under a canopy of stars and surrounded by the desert landscape. The resident ‘star-talker’ shares contemporary and traditional tales about the constellations above.

DAY FOUR

Wake up to the desert sunrise with a cultural guided base walk around Uluru, followed by breakfast. Prior to departure, enjoy some relaxing poolside time or get off the beaten track with specialised off-road four-wheel drive touring experience.

While in Central Australia, why not include a night at Kings Canyon, which can include a delicious degustation dinner under the stars and an exhilarating helicopter ride around this amazing natural wonder.

To ensure this is the unforgettable trip of a lifetime, complete your itinerary with a journey on the world-renowned Ghan railway, travelling in luxury through the Red Centre all the way up to the Top End of the Northern Territory. With sweeping views of Australia’s Outback where deep red earth meets cobalt blue skies, you’ll see the inspiration for thousands of years of Aboriginal art and have the opportunity to ‘taste destinations ‘ through a series of off-train tours along the way.

The NTCB is already something of a leader in the CSR arena and has set the benchmark to which many other Business Events destinations aspire. The bureau itself ‘walks the CSR talk’ and has identified organisations in the Northern Territory for potential CSR engagement.

The NT traditionally incorporates a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) concept and theme on its stand at AIME.

For 2014, an interactive display will be set up by Larrakia Nation, an organisation which provides bespoke Aboriginal cultural products and experiences. As the official representative of the traditional landowners of Darwin, Larrakia Nation works in the areas of homeless support, community services, aged care, health, cross-cultural training and environmental management and also seeks to develop economic opportunities which create jobs for Larrakia people.

The Larrakia Nation Art Centre can arrange workshops where delegates engage with Aboriginal artists in creating hands-on collaborative canvases. Pop-up art exhibitions, presentations on bush tucker and bush medicine and the provision of culturally-designed conference bags, plaques and awards can also be arranged. ‘Welcome to Country’ presentations include an opportunity for guests to actively take part in the welcome ceremony.

Conference and incentive planners can access the NTCB website for further information on the range of NT CSR organisations. To learn more about staging spectacular NT events whilst also creating a better tomorrow, visit the ‘Plan Your Event’ section at www.ntconventions.com

the northern territory convention bureau (ntcb) believes passionately in how corporate social responsibility (csr) initiatives can enhance business events. CSR engagement can make a real difference by bringing about positive change and leaving a lasting legacy. It provides participants with an unforgettable opportunity to engage with the local NT community, learn more about Australia’s ancient culture and make a strong connection with the land and its people. Activities range from volunteering time and effort for hands-on activity, assisting with fundraising and financial support or providing ‘in-kind’ assistance. It can be as simple as donating unwanted exhibitor items or delegate satchels, holding a charity auction of local artwork, inviting cultural performances or purchasing conference merchandise or gifts from not-for-profit community organisations

CORPORATE SOCIAL

RESPONSIBILITY

Bindi – Alice Springs

Bindi is an Alice Springs-based cross-cultural organisation which provides employment opportunities for adults with disabilities. During the Alice Stampede ’13 famil, ‘Stampeders’ donned protective clothing and with paintbrushes in hand, helped paint a mobile van which is soon to be used by Bindi. Another group gave the front entrance pathway a bright new coat of colour whilst a third group returned the flagpole to its sparkling white brilliance, proving within a little more than an hour, that many hands can, indeed, make light work.

ULURU ‘When BMW China chose to take its seventh ‘Destination X’ drive experience offshore for the first time, it found that Australia’s contrasting landscapes fitted the bill perfectly. The Vice President of BMW China said Uluru was the highlight of the entire trip, and Voyages Ayers Rock Resort did such a wonderful and professional job.’

Steven Wang, Managing Director New Asia Pacific Travel

DARWIN Destination appeal can play a significant role in Business Events. The Australian Airports Association (AAA) held its annual conference in Darwin in late 2013, with organisers indicating that the destination’s “pulling power” strongly contributed to the success of their conference:

‘The AAA delegate numbers in Darwin far exceeded our expectations. Darwin proved to be a major drawcard for delegates, many of whom brought partners and children. We had the largest ever number of delegates stay for the full four days of the conference and Darwin provided us with the opportunity to hold unique social events. The Beach BBQ for 250 delegates at Mindil Markets was incredibly special and a delegate highlight. Our experience in Darwin was really something special. The casual environment helped our delegates to wind down and forget their cares back in the ‘real world’ which meant they could focus on the conference sessions, exhibition and networking.’

Caroline Wilkie, CEO Australian Airports Association (AAA)

HEALTH SECTOR FAMILIARISATION TOUR 2013This annual tour offers event organisers from the Health industry the opportunity to connect with leading health practitioners on a dedicated health industry educational program to Central Australia and the Top End of the Northern Territory:

‘The wonderful can-do attitude and passion from supplier products certainly adds to the appeal of hosting meetings in the NT. NT is a unique experience that all Australians should see. In Alice Springs, a growing emphasis on arts, culture and an independent spirit quietly pervades everything. I loved the Beanie Festival as an accessible event that seems to sum up Alice and the trip to the Purple House was inspiring. The visit to Darwin with its emphasis on health really helped cement the decision to bring our event to Darwin. Darwin has the conferencing facilities along with the chance for wonderful experiences for delegates and partners. Not only is it a tourist destination but the unique health and scientific education opportunities available make it easy to recommend and promote.’

Denby Collinge, Conference Manager Conference Magic

‘The opportunity to hear from potential speakers, particularly the Royal Flying Doctor Service and Purple House, was wonderful as they are the kinds of people we would love to use at an event but rarely get to hear from. It was really inspiring to see the great work they are doing and the opportunity to introduce them or the other great speakers to our delegates would be fantastic.’

Lisa Robey, Manager Marketing and Health Promotion AML Alliance

ALICE SPRINGS ‘I would definitely recommend Alice Springs as a destination for a conference group. The flight schedules allow people from all over Australia to arrive within 2.5 hours from most capital cities and Qantas provides an excellent and timely service. The destination is unique in that many people have never visited Alice Springs so they have little or no expectations prior to arriving and I’m sure they depart with a new appreciation for Central Australia.’

Erin Vistarini, Account Manager Destination Group of Companies

ALICE STAMPEDE 2013 – MEGA

FAMILIARISATION TOURThis four day mega familiarisation event showcased everything Alice has to offer for a group of 20 VIP Conference and Incentive planners:

‘There is absolutely nothing in the world like ‘A Town like Alice’. Add in the amazing Northern Territory Convention Bureau and Alice Springs Convention Centre teams, a mix of old and new friends, fabulous weather, great experiences, and a slice of camel (or was it kangaroo?), and you have the perfect recipe for your next incentive or conference programme. Very impressed with the wide range of venues for activities and dinners. Good range of accommodation, excellent conference facilities and good local speakers. I had not really experienced Australia until I visited Alice Springs.’
