Youth Services has always been an extremely active and fun Avenue of Service (AOS). Led by the enthusiastic and highly capable Dianne Day, this AOS supports Rotaract students at the University of California San Diego. Rotaract students from UCSD & USD assist our club in many ways especially with the various hands on projects we have conducted throughout the year including Operation Camp Pendleton, the Family Justice Center and Rotarians at Work Day. at Preuss School UCSD. The Sister Schools program creates an opportunity for goodwill and better understanding as Interact students at Preuss engage in learning via Skype calls with students in India and Afghanistan. High School students are really excited to not only make new friends but better understand cultural differences.

Krishna Arora, Joel Candib, President-Elect Ron Kohl, Interact District Chair Marty Rosenstein, MD and President Brett Morey recently held an Informational Meeting for Interact Club at University City High School on May 28th. More than 60 students crowded into Mr. Compagnone’s room as four Interact Advisors joined in the discussion. 4 WAY TEST

For Rotary, The Four-Way Test is the cornerstone of all action. It has been for years, and it will be in the future. Of the things we think, say or do

As Rotarians, we should have The Four-Way Test in mind in every decision we make, all day long. Our utmost responsi-bility is to Speak The Truth, to Be Fair, to Build Goodwill and Better Friendships, and to do our very best in all situations.

4 Way Test was developed in 1932 by

Herbert J. Taylor.

---- 1 ---- Is it the TRUTH?

---- 2 ----Is it FAIR to all concerned?

---- 3 ----

Will it build GOODWILL and

better FRIENDSHIPS?

---- 4 ----Will it be BENEFICIAL

to all concerned?

Dennis Bucko, Rotarian of the Day, cosmetic surgeon to the stars and non-stars, sculptor of faces and plaster, shared a mindful poem about friends, non-friends, and blessings. Dennis changed hats to literally became a harmonica player. Blues on a Friday morning with riffs on trains and jokes about frogs had me wondering if I was still in a club and reaching for a drink. We were tapping and clapping in the stands. Marty Rosenstein thinks Dennis learnt his art in prison. My question is how Marty knows so much about prison.

We had our first Twitter guest (name?), Brett’s guest was a proselytizer for signs (www.believeinsigns.com). Your reporter thought he was a scientist! Our fine fine-master filled the frog with high-fives and low-fives for prizes in Gymnastics, beer refrigerators, and kids going potty. We cover the spectrum of life at the Most Dynamic Rotary Club in the World. To set an example, our President Morey gave a couple of fives for stories about FB, wrecked cars, and a graduating son. San Luis Obispo college will be Moreyfied.

A line-up of club stars reminded us about the myriad range of activities our club brings. Payments of $40 for Promote Demote on June 20th to Laara Gervais please. Be there early for our Beer Festival. The tables

are decorated with children’s books to sublimininally (phonetic reproduction of Linda Andrews’ novel word) remind us to bring them in next week. Jacquie and the crew handed out the quarterly fried chicken at the VA. Fary requested diapers and canned food for military families. Brett clarified diapers for babies. Babies in the military?? Recruiting starts young.

Four food trucks you won’t want to miss at the Beer Festival: SuperCube Barbecube, King Cream Ice Cream, Two for the Road lobsters and crab cakes, Crepes Bonaparte (leftover from the Napoleonic wars).

President Brett forgot the word for “flyers”, which escaped him by perhaps flying away? Our President has his hands full of wrecked cars and star members.Pam Russell shared that 3% of Rotarians in Paul Harris club represent 35% of Rotary contributions. Paul Harris idea started in District 5340 – the most Dynamic District in the World!!

It’s true! Osama bin Laden was found by CIA agents giving polio vaccinations. The US Government no longer practises this, terrorists need to know, and we continue with the push to eradicated polio.

Our speaker Gabe Selak gave the history of the

military in San Diego. Join now to get 15% off and Tom Hum’s book for free. Go see the Pacific Powerhouse exhibit, on through Jan 4, 2015 at either Balboa Park or nine satellite locations at partner sites. Gabe showed a fabulous map from 1650 by Sanson showing California as an island. Queen Califia was the prize, a fictionalized story documentad by a 1533 book. Hernan Fernando Cortes (Sea of Cortez?) led the search, accompanied by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who named the spot he found San Miguel, after the Saint Day for St Michael, which was closest. A second explorer came later, found the spot again, didn’t see a name sign, and San Didicus happened to be the have the closest to that fateful moment. The Presidio fort was established, fell into disuse, was bought by George Marston, whose rehabilitation of the site brought prehistoric dirt from the San Diego River on top of the Presidio historic site. What a trip with fabulous stories of battles, Governors, forts, treaties ships, explorers, and famous sites in San Diego County! He could talk forever, he says, and I wish we had the time.

President Brett had an appropriate joke plucked out of a field of inappropriateness. The video Best Gift Ever for an overexcited graduate was priceless.

SCHERFSandra’s higher education began at UC Berke-ley in the early 60’s when it was the best of times and the worst of times. Oh, the tales she could tell…some other time.

Additional education at SDSU, the Universidad de Cervantes, Guadalajara, Jalisco, and, most importantly, and by far the most challenging, the School of Life where she aspires to an advanced degree.

She taught Spanish and French full-time at the secondary level for 36 years and overlapped 17 of those years concurrently teaching part-time at the university level. At the high school level she specialized in working with Honors programs and the exceptionally gifted, and at the university level she trained pre-service and in-service teachers on the latest and greatest methodologies in language acquisition.

After such a massively challenging career, even though she’s been retired now for 12 years, she’s almost able to sleep through most nights and her doctors tell her she should be back on solid foods any time now. Young Rotarians can probably bare-ly imagine the changes in education that she en-

dured. Why, back in the olden days, ladies in the teaching profession were only permitted to wear dresses, skirts and blouses, never pants.

Her career was so rich as a teacher, not financially of course, but in experiences, that once upon a time, she was even honored on the South Lawn of the White House as a Distinguished Teacher by the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars. There was even a time when her views and opinions on some major educational issues were highly valued and sought after by some pret-ty important people so she got to serve on some very high level foreign language Boards locally, statewide, and nationally. You might even say that at her height of 6 feet tall, she was a teacher of considerable stature. And, unexpectedly, she’s also a published author of a number of books in her field, with scintillating titles such as Higher Level Competencies for French 11-12.

She really wanted to be a spy but it didn’t work out. Ask her about it.

One of her hobbies is reading about brain re-search. She has a pretty good reason why that she will only share with qualified Rotarians. O
