INTRODUCTION
The format of this newsletter is temporary as our usual format is
contained in Ken’s computer which is winging its way to
Australia. In fact everything is upside down this month as you
know. Hopefully April will see big improvements.
Denia U3A held its AGM on the 27th February when we said
goodbye to Ken Yendell, our President of two years and
welcomed our new President, Terence Walker. During his term as
President, Ken's wife, Sylvana acted as secretary and between
them and the Committee they rejuvenated the club by introducing
new groups and many wonderful events.
Terry will have some big shoes to fill but he and his new
Committee intend to make Denia U3A bigger and better than ever.
Unfortunately he could not have taken over at a worse time. His
first announcement was to cancel all future events, including the
Easter lunch and coffee mornings, until further notice. We were
looking forward to a fun and event packed year but it is no longer
our decision to make.

GROUP NEWS
Group Leaders Lunch
Denia U3A showed its appreciation for the support and
enthusiasm given by its Group Leaders by hosting a lunch for
them at DeniArros. Over thirty Leaders attended and enjoyed the
good food and wine.
The Groups represented the sporty outdoor activities including
fishing, pétanque, walking and many more as well as the indoor
sedentary, thought provoking, card games, chess, backgammon
and literary groups. No competitiveness, just a great lunch.
New President Terence Walker thanked the groups for giving
Denia such a wide variety of interests and looked forward to the
year ahead.

Backgammon
The February tournament for the prestigious BUMA cup was won
by Colin Hall, being presented with the trophy and a vintage
bottle of wine by Group Leader Dave.
Cycling Group
Sadly Barbara Doms has resigned as the Damsel Cycling Group
Leader.
As a result, Terence Walker, Group Leader of Intermediate
Cycling has amalgamated the two groups to make “Cycling
Group!” If you would like to join just email
[email protected]. I am sure the cycling skills of both
groups will be taken into account so all members can enjoy the
weekend rides.
Easy Walking Group
The Easy Walkers meet on the third Wednesday of every month
for an average six kilometre walk followed by restaurant lunch!
(They deserve it).
If you would like to join them please contact Group Leader
Richard Towler on [email protected]
THE PÉTANQUE GROUP
The Petanca group meets every Tuesday morning at Bassetes
Park, Las Marinas. Registration starts at 10am , and play from
10.30am. The maximum number of players we can accommodate
is 40, So it’s important to arrive as early as possible. On
occasions we have visitors who want to have a game. However,
U3A members will always take priority. Over the past couple of
months we've had all sorts of weather to contend with . Beautiful
sunshine, normal spring days and, of course, the horrendous
storm. There was no play the week of the storm but other than
that we have been playing every week with strong competition for
the winners’ wine. Joined by some partners, 44 of us enjoyed a
fabulous post Christmas lunch at DeniArroz.
We had some lovely pics from Pétanque but due to editor error
they were deleted. Very sorry. It will not happen again.
RACQUETBALL
Racquetball is played every week and needs more members. If
you need to get fit then this is the group to join. Contact Group
Leader Bernhardt Lowes by emailing, [email protected]
NEW GROUP
PLAY AND POETRY READING
Dénia U3A used to have a very active drama group but sadly it
petered out. As we have very good theatre groups in Javea and
Olivia there is no need for another one but many of us enjoy
reading plays and poetry without having to make it a
‘performance’. The new group will meet initially in someone’s
house and we welcome new members, favourite plays and choice
of poems. Day still undecided, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday
morning depending on majority preference, starting at 10.00.
We cannot do it without members so if you would like to join
please email the editor on [email protected]
THE QUIZ GROUP HAS MOVED…….
And for your first question: where is the best venue to hold a
quiz? The answer is, of course, Cafe Soles! We had a super
meal there while racking our brains to answer Liz’s table quiz of
anagrams of famous actresses and actors.
You don’t need to be Brain of Britain, it’s all just good fun. Come
alone or get a table of friends together and join us for our next
Quiz Nite and dinner on Friday 27 March. Contact Richard
u3adeniaquiz.com to put your name on the list. Tables are limited
and you don’t want to miss out!
THE DINING CLUB
The Dining Club held its February dinner at the newly opened
Senyoret Restaurant in Dénia, (opposite medical centre). A lovely
menu, very good house wine and a wonderful evening.
Happy evening at Senyoret.
THE TRAVEL GROUP
TRAVEL TRIPS - SENSIBLE PRECAUTIONS
Following the example of the Committee in cancelling all future
events, the Travel Group has postponed the day trip to Elche on
the 26 March until the threat of the Coronavirus has passed.
Given the age of our members and the rapid spread of the
disease, it would be unthinkable to place the health of our
members at risk. We will keep our next trip to the Bioparc in
Valencia on 5 June under review.

EVENTS
Farewell to Ken
The Committee hosted a farewell lunch to Ken at Basta restaurant
in the Marina. Poignant but lots of fun and laughter
FUTURE EVENTS
We cannot give future events as we don’t know when everything
in Denia will be open again and the lockdown lifted. However,
after the initial panic buying the supermarkets this morning were
business as usual. Meat, fish and vegetables. No shortage. The
President and Committee are always concerned for the welfare of
members so any problems about getting food, medicine or
anything else please ask us.
Of course if there was a food shortage we would all get slim but
sadly with no exercise and the profusion of wine in the
supermarkets we might be in a sorry state. Never mind. It’s all for
the cause. Stay in and stay well. Ed.

If we try to help, we must make sure we are actually helping. The
following is from the Ayuntamiento (City Council)
From Ayuntameinto:
Faced with the health alert situation, social associations working in the city, in coordination with the CIty Council of Dénia, are organizing a special device to help the most vulnerable people (who must limit exits to a minimum to the street) on day to day issues such as shopping or getting medication.
We advise that any solidarity action of this kind be channeled through entities to ensure the adoption of appropriate measures to prevent infections. If you want help, contact the
